OBAMA's "statement" (quite frightening)...
"I will stand with them (muslims) should the political winds shift in an ugly direction."
(The quote comes from page 261 of the paperback edition of "The Audacity of Hope.)
(Edited for typo.)
-
Mary, that is going to become a classic! Just leave it to "Man on Dog!"
-
Based on the turmoil that Obama has caused in the Middle East...if he "stands with them"...we're in deep trouble.
-
^^^ LOL Shock and Awe was/is turmoil. I guess every country has their "Glenn Becks" and "Rush Limbaughs" to inspire small protests here and there.
HL - that reminds me of the rationing stamps my mother had kept from WWII - kind of cool to see those. My mother was a big fan of FDR, btw, and Adelaide Stevens. She was in nursing school (in Canada) during the depression, but my parents decided to move to the US during the war, "for more opportunities." One of my father's first jobs in California was to design a tower with telemetry. He found out after the fact it was used to set off the first hydrogen bomb. We have bombs. My Canadian relatives have Universal Healthcare. Pretty clear. Sorry for the ramblings.....
-
CLC - LOVED LOVED LOVED the letter - wish it would go viral - hoping my sending it to my entire email list might help.
Well, well, I have a new name for Alexandria's latest book: "Heidi Teaches the Tealiban to Yodel: rightyho, righty ho."
AWESOMELY amazing, how lonely some people must be, wish they could create a Friendship Thread which they'd be welcome on, after all we are all so aware of the "Don't Like, Don't Read" approach which really does make it so peaceful around here.
Watched what the wonder Calvin Trillin calls the "Sabbath morning gasbags" on TV - and lo theo they tried, they sure couldn't shake the US Ambassador to the United Nations. WOW - Susan Rice is so wise, wonderful, TOUGH, TOUGH, quick with incredibly good information, looking forward to Secretary of State Dr. Rise in next Obama Administration,
-
Speaking of rambling and the dust bowl and so on: I have a Rose of Sharon bush which has been blooming continuously since mid-July. Whenever I look at it, I think of The Grapes of Wrath. Do you know why?
My DH has grown 6 brussels sprouts plants, which are now huge. But, it takes so, so long for the tiny BS buds to start growing in the crotch of the leaves. Maybe by mid-November we'll have some baby sprouts!
-
No problem, we'll just start our own thread so you girls can practice the "Don't Like, Don't Read" approach. K?
-
Kam, I, too, still have a book of ration stamps from my mother. She loved FDR, and I grew up learning of all the good he did here at home and abroad -- in the days when we could actually learn things instead of being taught to pass a test. Roosevelt, for all his faults (and he had many, as do we all) truly did save the world.
Mary, my response is, "Yep. And there is a reason for that, thank God!"
L -
lindasa...my dh also has a bunch of brussel sprouts coming! YEAH! I love brussel sprouts, too.

sunflowers...yeah, the letter is pretty awesome!
I have officially entered the room with blocked windows. Not too many shadows, though, because of all of the open ones that blow in so much wonderful fresh air... thank you all!

-
CLC, I'm so happy you can hang out here on the weekends! I read fhe letter a few days ago and it was WONDERFUL! He did a version without the swear words (there really aren't that many) for his dad, and it is still powerful. What he said!
L -
HL...no there aren't that many swear words...but they are quite fun!
-
Some people don't know how to read!
I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.
This statement is a rewording of a passage from page 261 of The Audacity of Hope, in which Barack Obama spoke of the importance of not allowing inflamed public opinion to result in innocent members of immigrant groups being stripped of their rights, denied their due as American citizens, or placed into confinement, as was done with Japanese-Americans during World War II. The original contains no specific mention of "Muslims":
In the wake of 9/11, my meetings with Arab and Pakistani Americans, for example, have a more urgent quality, for the stories of detentions and FBI questioning and hard stares from neighbors have shaken their sense of security and belonging. They have been reminded that the history of immigration in this country has a dark underbelly; they need specific reassurances that their citizenship really means something, that America has learned the right lessons from the Japanese internments during World War II, and that I will stand with them should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.

Thanks Blue, I LOVED both President Obama's books. He, as David Maraniss says, really has the heart and soul of a writer. So honored he is our President. Don't have to worry about this President not understanding the meaning of "nuance" - but then, he is SO, SO, SO wise. I've got good friends still living and working in DC, who sometimes joke, that THIS President is playing "chess" and we're still stuck learning "checkers."
-
keep chuckling - wanna take bets anyone on when our posts start getting "reported" - tee, hee....I know I shouldn't be amused by stooooopidity, but sometimes I succumb...
Off to enjoy this GLORIOUS New England FalL Day.
Peace to all.....

My 97 year old father who lived through the depression with few resources asked me to mend a pair of his trousers which likely are 30 years old or more and well beyond repair. Today I was able to find a replacement pair almost exactly the same. Universal health care has helped him reach that magnificent age and continues to provide excellent care for him.
He really likes field tomatoes at this time of year.
-
Hugs going out to Lassie's 97 years young dad, and hoping he gets to try Sun Gold tomatoes next year, if he hasn't tried them yet. My favorites - just SO yummy, especially when you pick them off the vine, slightly warmed by the sun.
-
Yes, Sungolds...I just picked a handful myself. So sweet. I was determined to have a tomato garden this year, despite chemo, sometimes propping myself up against the house between digging holes. My all time favorite are Black Krims, but they are so iffy around here...too short of a growing season and not very prolific.
-
lindasa, I know the Rose of Sharon link to THE GRAPES OF WRATH! That was the name of the daughter, but they said it as Rosasharn (or something similar in the dialect.)
I'm sure the report post button has shorted out by now.
Lassie, how cool to still have your Dad at such an old age (him, not you!!) I miss both my parents...
Speaking of veggies, I'm going to roast up a huge pan of them this afternoon. No brussel sprouts in the mix, though. But eggplant, fennel, garlic, onion, red bell peppers, carrots, zucchini, mushrooms, kalmata olives and cherry tomatoes. With olive oil, salt and pepper. Eat it over quinoa tonight, then cold with hummus on a tortilla for lunches. The prep work is long, but so worth the effort!!
-
Anne - I just roasted vegetables for lunch I still haven't found the secret of roasting eggplants though....I salt them, let them sit for 1/2 hour, rinse, then roast at 375 for 20-30 minutes, with olive oil. I try to hold down the oil to 1-2 tsp. They turn out chewy and strange. Any advice?? Don't want to use too much oil. Roasting kalamatas...that sounds interesting.
-
Good Afternoon Everyone!
I'm having a good day ... been busy working. I see we have new people posting on this thread. I just don't understand it.
I've posted in the past that I don't have anyone set to ignore, but I'm going to have to change that.
This thread isn't just about politics ... it's about friendships and support for each other that has been in place for years now.
I'm glad the others are going to go away and start their own thread on conservative politics. More power to them and I hope they can develop the close loving friendships we have with each other.
Now ... off to work the ignore button.
hugs,
Bren

If it be so desired.........anyone can start a thread of their own...........singing the praises of Romney.(if they can find anything to praise), and also praise.........the Glenn Becks of the world, and the Rush's, if there are anyone else as rude, opioniated, and unpatriotic as they are..........for this reason.......................People who publically insult, degrade, or humiliate the President of the United States, regardless of their "party" just show how unamerican they are................what does the rest of the world think of people from a country who can't even respect their own President....................so who is to blame for the hatred of our government................try starting with the very people who get of TV, and Radio, and spread their hatred for all to hear......................I rest my case............good luck with your new thread..............just for the record...............I didn't like it when they did it to President Bush either...............there is something to be said for dignity................but what can you expect when we have our own "congressmen" saying..................OUR MAIN GOAL IS TO MAKE HIM A 1 TERM PRESIDENT.....................like Kennedy....the other side never expected him to win either..............and we know why that was too............I just hope and pray the same fate that happened to Kennedy, does not happen to Obama.....why the man wants the job is beyone me.........his dedication and love for America is not appreciated by so many........I wish him luck, and a safe journey through the next 4 years.
Four more years...........four more years..........we need the compassion of Obama,...............my mother always said you catch more flies with honey, the vinegar...........................and this is not political................it is the truth..............
-
Haaaaaleeeeelooooooya... took a peek at the Active Thread to see if anyone has posted anything about "More than 5 years on a AI" - one of my interests - and found a new "thread" about Coservative Politics - Haaaalllleeeeeeeeloooooooya - NOW maybe it can be peaceful here again...
PLEASE, or puhleeeeez don't anyone feel they have to go and Defend the President of the United States, or anyone else who has a heart, and SOUL, and cares about making sure everyone has access to quality healthcare. Please....remember "Don't Like, Don't Read" - and if you do read - PLEASE do not comment here or there.
Of course, if I went there it would just be a list of "This post is suppressed because you are ignoring" anyhow...but please, don't take anything said to heart - some of you have, ah, read, as a "guest" a long time ago some of the political "observations" on another website, so you know what you're "missing" anyhow...BE GLAD, Celebrate....please don't be drawn into a "gotcha" game - so much more important things to do in the world, like watch the leaves turn colours,
listen to the crickets remind us the Autumn Solstice is almost here, and REJOICE, REJOICE in the "Friendship" of this thread, which sometimes discusses "politics" as it is SO vital we keep Obamacare for all of us.This is SUCH GOOD NEWS!
-
I'm glad they have their own special little place, and hope it permanently diverts their attention away from here, BUT, how come "they" are visible on Active Topics and this thread remains invisible? Is it time to move Blue's thread back to Active status? That seems only fair since the other side is now there. Or do y'all want to remain mainly unseen? I can see the advantages, just doesn't seem kosher.
-
Anne -- YES! Her name in the book was actually Rose of Sharon (quite biblical) but it did get shortened to RosaSharon.
Steinbeck truly captured the dust bowl/depression and its ghastly but oh-so-real effects on so many, many people. My parents lived through it, and even though they were comparatively well off, they were the ultimate reduce/re-use/recycle people, habits which stayed with them, and everybody else, the rest of their lives.
-
And, all, PLEASE let Sunflowers' post be the last we say on that topic. The less said the better. it is not a discussion -- it is poison bait. Stay here. Do.not.go.there. Nothing to see. Move along.
Safeway also had raspberries on sale for $1.99/6 oz container. I stocked up, because all my nice big gallon bags of raspberries, blackberries and blueberries went to mush when I was without power after the derecho.
Have to restock. But they are very nice ones!L
ETA: Unseen, Yorkie. Those who want to be here know we are here, lurking or active.
-
I can understand Yorkie's feelings...but I am concerned. I didn't think everyone here was liberal, though clearly many are. I would hate to see the new thread be allowed to define this thread. I thought this thread was so much more than a political narrative. I am relatively new, and don't want to push into this, but that is my gut feeling. That new thread has nothing to do with this one, and isn't in the same class, imho...
-
To keep the eggplant from being too mushy, sprinkle it lightly with some sort of breadcrumbs or flour or whatever you like after putting a drizzle of oil and garlic (because garlic is the essential ingredient to me). Then bake it.
-
Eggplant, in my opinion, needs a fair bit of oil. I cut it in boat/sticks about an inch thick. Then I put it in a bowl and toss it with salt, pepper, squeezed garlic, olive oil and a splash of balsamic, turn it around and around to get well coated, then on a baking tray and in a hot oven till nicely browned.
-
We have many new friends who have found us so I agree that staying unseen has not hurt us.
Riley ... are you unpacked yet?
Bren ... hope you enjoyed your shopping trip!
-
Terrorism is alive and well.
On another note: I don't envy Romney, although his handlers are doing a bad job. They think the old Bush-Rove tricks of lying and lying until people believe you are telling the truth still works. It does for many people, but not for the media, which is of average intelligence.
