Athena weather, that's what we're having. It's a little "cool" but lovely, just lovely. Refreshing.
Great article on HuffPo about how Willard's advisors are rushing to change tactics - as "the economy" isn't working - and that's a little too bad cuz that's the only "thing" the ticket ( esp. the veep) had "going" for it.
I PROMISE PROMISE not to chuckle - but darn, Karma sometimes does give a kick in the boot to those who most deserve it. Nate Silver has GREAT numbers from all the swing states - ESP. Medicare in FLA...almost makes me wanna go out & buy some oranges...but not great for my keep the glucose low food intake ;-)
-
Eggplant:
Ok, do you have to squeegy out the moisture or not???? Mark Bittman says "not necessary" but I can hear so many friends saying "ya gotta or it's too bitter" - it's a plentiful crop around here now.
News: not ONE of my 6 ( yes, I planted a lot thinking I'd give extra to the Food Bank nearby) zucchini plants produced a fruit! Lotsa flowers, bees, and dusty moldy like stuff on all the leaves... so much for my green thumbs. ;(
-
So...about eggplant: The bigger the eggplant, the more bitter it can become, hence salting it first. I only buy baby eggplant(s) and dice them (big dice), mince some garlic into olive oil and sprinkle over the eggplant, then add salt and pepper and oregano, and roast in a 375 oven for 1/2 hour.
Sun -- Sometimes zucchini sex needs a helping hand! Gotta figure out the male and female flowers first, though! The bees obviously had better things to do
.Oh yes, I quite like being unseen.......
-
Ooooohhhh...Linda, I didn't think of that - after AnnNYC a long time ago posted pics of the "male" and "female" squach blossoms a few years ago, I went out with a Q-Tip, and Played Gregor Mendel with my gourds & pumpkins - it was SUCH fun. Didn't think to do that with the zukes...
I also wonder wht all that terrible dusty stuff was on all the HUGE leaves - well, too late for this year.
Next year - I have seeds for purple tomaltios ( sp?) and of course, more sun golds...
-
Thanks for all of the eggplant suggestions...it sounds like I'm not using enough oil as I definitely cut it smallish, salt and soak and also use small fruits. Trying to cut the calories, otherwise I would use the breadcrumb suggesiton.
Pinks are going blue and reds are going pink...open mouth insert foot trend.

Some people are such a hoot! Methinks some are getting very nervous.
Slice eggplants and bbq them, then season with garlic, salt, oregano, olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Zucchini the same.
-
CLC ... you are exactly right. This is a friendship thread and politics is only one of many subjects we yak about. And we want to keep it that way. We do not want to be redefined as anybody's competition re political views or to get pulled into senseless arguments merely because somebody else started another thread. We just want to be allowed to discuss amongst ourselves whatever anybody feels like discussing at the moment.
I have never eaten eggplant. And I am in total shock that anybody could have 6 zucchini plants and not be overrun by the darn things. I was never so lucky
Blue knows how to make fritters from the flowers though if I recall correctly. -

I know, honestly, I was expecting to be the Bountiful Gardener, giving to senior centers, food banks, and ZILCH. Nada. None. Now, if ya wanna talk about prolific - lets talk about Jerusalem artichokes, sometimes called sun chokes. I could NOT get rid of them. Dug down about 3 feet, they are ALL back, with their children, grandchildren, and many generations to come. After the first frost, I will dig up tubers, make soup, saute, give away...and they'll STILL be multifold more next year.
Farmer said way he got rid of them, was to cut down before they grow tall, so can't send "food" down into the tubers to multiply. Nope, that didn't work the year before either...they DO have lovely small sunflower
like flowers on the tops of their 7 foot tall shoots, though. -
Bittman is right, as long as the eggplant is fresh and not too huge. I never do the salting business.
-
Yorkie .. I like not being on the Active list. Our friends know how to find us.

I'm good with it too Bin. Just thought I'd throw the idea out there.

Note to anybody who is lurking though ... we aren't hiding because we don't like new friends. if you come in peace we will be delighted to have you join us!
This gardening season was so weird and unpredictable. We're disappointed that the potatoes were a big flop. Yet the tomatoes did reasonably well and the green peppers are going crazy now at this late date.
-
Dear Lurkers,
By come in peace, we mean check your facts before posting. There are three good fact check sites. For the really weird and upsetting stuff that you may have gotten through an email, check Snopes http://www.snopes.com/
For standard political nonsense or what appears to make sense, use FactCheck.org http://www.factcheck.org/
For checking up on the veracity of individuals and campaign promises, use PolitiFact http://www.politifact.com/ This site has the award called Pants On Fire for the really big political lies and liars. It also gives an update on Obama's campaign promises showing how many he's kept, and how many he has not.
If you do not check your facts and post something that is misleading or false, you will be ignored and we will start trading recipes for brussels sprouts.

YES! Empty Nest Syndrome!

Blue, Oh my, how beautiful! I had to jump in - that dress is gorgeous, the shoes devine and your daughter is so beautiful!
I've been lurking but haven't commented in ages because it's hard to keep up with everything that goes on here and I get behind and then I don't want to it to look like I'm ignoring something important that's happened so I just stay quiet and read when I can. I just wanted you all to know that I do look in and I smile over the conversations I see here.

River Rat no worries. Jump in whenever you want!

Went to my niece's soccer game this afternoon, and saw my first person wearing a lymphedema sleeve, other than me. I don't even wear mine all the time-I just wear it proactively when I fly. I don't have lymphedema and I don't want it. I went up to her and said, "Excuse me-are you a breast cancer survivor?" She said, "Yes-how did you know?" I told her about my sleeve and glove. She said I was the first person that didn't think she was a burn patient. She had 28 lymph nodes removed-I've only had 4 removed. It was nice to talk to someone who knew exactly what I was talking about.
Eggplant-there used to be a Chinese restaurant around here that made a sauteed eggplant with garlic and red chilies that was to die for. Unfortunately, the restaurant is no longer. I suppose I could try making it myself but I don't think it would be the same. My mouth is watering just thinking about it.
Blue-the dress and shoes are gorgeous.
Welcome River Rat!

Blue...your daughter is beautiful!

Blue, everything looks lovely, especially your daughter! Congrats
-
Blue, Your daughter is beautiful and her dress is perfect.
River Rat, It's good to see you again.
-
Blue, BEAUTIFUL dress and shoes! And you will be a BEAUTIFUL mother-of-the-bride, too!
RiverRat, it is so nice to see you! Jump in whenever you want ... sometimes it takes me so long to type when I'm on the iPad that the topic has moved on and my post goes *thud* -- but that's OK. We're all friends here, and you always have interesting things to say.
Lymphedema ... hm. As you all know, I had a BMX and immediate DIEP a year ago. My (2x) BC side was my left side -- no problems there. HOWEVER, my right noob (toob, really -- tummy boob) is somewhat swollen and it remains swollen under my arm. Could be because I'm chubby, could be because of fluid retention. I am seeing a lymphedema therapist once a week (now backing off to once every other week) to see if we can make the swelling go down. We were joking the other day that I am such a medical oddball (remember the hallucinations with dilaudid after my surgery -- visits from Ricky Nelson, my late mother and Jackie Kennedy in the ICU?) that of course I would have lymphedema in the noob where I didn't have lymph nodes removed (or even touched). We don't think it is true lymphedema, but ... of course, I wouldn't have *real* lymphedema. I have to have *oddball* lymphedema!

blue ... your daughter and that dress look fantastic!! Looking forward to some wedding pictures.
Santorum wants a theocracy IMO. That requires obedience. Smart people get sassy and keep wanting to color outside the lines.
RiverRat ... I can't keep up half the time either. I second the just pop in and speak up and don't worry about it idea.
