We live in town but back onto a river on a small urban lot.  Our lawn areas are small, intended to be places to sit lounge.  The rest is perennial gardens, shrubs and some very old, very large sugar maples, an amazing black walnut,  and some younger oaks. It has been very dry, but river levels are still ok. Until last year I had not thought of getting a pump and using river water, just followed the alternate days watering schedule and things stayed ok.  But duh, it makes no sense to water with treated water when we have lovely, untreated river water.  And I could water any day I wanted .  I realise that this involves getting a pump and some sort of way to power it.  Fossil fuel generator is out (noise, pollution) maybe an electric pump?  But then again, we are starting time of use billing here soon.  If I think about it long enough it will be fall and the rain will come again (fingers crossed) and I will have to put on my list of things to get done before spring.

The robins and cardinals love it when I water, as do the insects which they are prowling after. 

I'm thinking if we were bashing Obama, we would be left alone.

Speaking of Sunflower(s) and good things, this year I put out Sunflower seeds for the birds...I've only recently gotten into bird feeding, up until this year, only Nyger seed for the Goldfinches and Pine Siskins, and Hummingbird feeders and Mitt Witts.  So I put out the Sunflower seeds and coincidently, it must have been an "eruption year" for Evening Grosbeaks.  My backyard was loaded with them and they are such an exotic looking bird for my parts and without feeding them, I don't think I had ever noticed them before.   For awhile, my cats coexisted, but they adapted as some of the seeds fell to the ground and the birds followed, so I had to eventually remove my feeder.  They are such a beautiful bird.

One of the birds I rescued from my cat and subsequently gave to a friend who rescues and releases all kinds of birds and raptors.  The one I gave her did not survive (she administered antibiotics).  She said cat bites are the absolute worst, infection wise.  After that, I just took down the feeder.  I could hardly stand the worrying I did with that sweet bird.

On another topic - I am having a really hard time with hot flashes.  Scared to take the over counter stuff as it might interfere with my tamoxifen, etc.

I am waking up at least 4 times a night dripping wet with sweat.  It is absolutely disgusting and is totally interrupting my sleep patterns.

Any ideas?

When I do run the sprinkler out back I love to watch the birds dance and wiggle. Bluejays

like to do it from tree branches. Cardinals like to boogie in the grass along with the mocking birds.

jancie, my hot flashes under Tamoxifen made me think I had died and gone to Hell to make sure it stayed hot enough down there.

There is uncertainty as to whether black cohosh a) works and b) can be used because it may be estrogenic. Go to the NCCAM web site. Most cancer docs will say no to black cohosh but, as with so many things cancer, only because it doesn't make sense - not because it has actually been found to be bad.

Other than that, nothing worked for me except standing by a cool fan. It was a terrible sufferance.

That is the nicest thing I can say about hot flashes - and Tamoxifen.

Jancie - I welcome every hot flush - it shows the Aromasin is working - try to keep that in mind.

Wow - I actually slept in until 7!!! I should tryhaving a day off more often.

We had a terrible drought here and then we had lots of floods, so hold on to that thought.

Kay - you are right, often the nicest people get banned after a campaign against them - it's not fair.

That Archie Bunker, just too too funny!

What I want to know is this, this thread is not on the active thread lists even though it is certainly very active, so a person would have to seek it out to find out what was being discussed. So I presume that there are some people out there who do not approve of like minded people getting together to share recipes, opinions, fears, good times. Seems to me that is rather small minded. If the reporter comes here and is offended perhaps she should keep her thin skin elsewhere. She had to look to find us in the first place. Just MY opinion.
