Scoot - I just purchased a Kindle Fire - you convinced me. I'm really excited. It has what I want and I really like the layout. My flip phone AND my Kindle Fire are both arriving tomorrow. Yey!

I can't even see bats on television.....I do like ostriches, flamingos and cranes are adorable.

Ok, I'm weird.  While they make me nervous, I am intrigued by bats.  Don't want to be too close - afraid of rabies - but they are such interesting creatures.  They have been maligned by Hollywood and horror writers.  They are highly social, creating complex social structures, and they are wonderful mothers.  I bought my daughter a book about bats when she was around 10 - she was crazy about them.

  I also like birds, found that they're much more intelligent than people give them credit for, but everyone likes birds.  As a public defender, I had to put in a word for bats.

Romney doesn't have foot-in-mouth disease - his foot resides in his esohpagus. I think the man has to get around on his hands at this stage.

Otherwise, this campaign season is horribly boring. My take: because the republicans have been campaigning against the black man ever since he came to office, so the only difference now is that most of the anti-Obama rhetoric is coming from Romney and not from Boehner and McConnell. It's been a four year campaign. Barack will win, but the GOP war of attrition is costing the country every day.

Don't come to central Tx if you are afraid of bats. At sunset, millions of Mexican free tail bats pour out from under the Congress Ave bridge in Austin. Closer to me, one of the bridges in Round Rock produces the same phenomenon.



I have to confess, the sight at sunset is just amazing. I drive down now and then and wait for them to emerge.



Of course the bats are super important to agriculture as they fly out at night to eat insects.

yorkiemon, Good thoughts for you with the dentist. I get to see mine next week for the permanent one to be placed, and 2 others he wants to drill the old fillings out and fill. Have I said how much I hate dentists before!!!

I like bats, too. It's neat to sit out in the back yard at sunset and listen to them squeaking as they dive-bomb the bugs. I've been to Carlsbad Caverns twice - I like caves, too, but the big draw was sitting in the amphitheater at the cave entrance at sunset and watch them come swirling out for the night. Camera flashes strictly prohibited as they could foul up the bats' sonar. You can also see raccoons and even snakes gather on the hill opposite the amphitheater. The guides say they're hoping a bat gets confused and bumbles close enough for them to reach out and snatch a meal.

And they can eat their weight in bugs every night, so thumbs up for bats. You can build bat houses near a source of water for them to nest in as their natural habitat is disappearing. The houses have thin slots open only at the bottom and with a small dowel rod at the top for them to perch on. Their feet are naturally in the closed, or grasping position, which is how they can sleep and not fall. They have to consciously relax their feet to let go, which is the opposite of most animals, although I'm not sure about birds, which bats aren't. 

Each year at the end of July there is some sort of migration of bats in this area. And each year the stupid one finds its way into my house. Last night was this year's event. Now that I no longer have a cat to deal with the situation, I turn off the lights and hide in a room with the door shut and towels around the edges of the door. By morning the bat is gone. How it got in and how it got out are beyond me. On night two (tonight) I am a bit leery that the darned thing is still somewhere in the house. Bats belong outside. Those of you who love bats are more than welcome to this one. And next year's too.

Went further on my ride today - came home the long way and racked up 8.4km. I'll do that for the rest of the week. I even made it all the way up the difficult street near home.

Having a day off tomorrow to go and see my onc and get my eyes tested. Also having lunch with a friend from the Aussie BC boards.

Steve called me today - doesn't sound like he's having a nice time - there are a couple of blokes on the trip who are a pain. He said the tides aren't right for them to fish - high tide morning and evening and they can't get up the beach.

Meanwhile, I'm enjoying my daily Lean Cuisine and glass of wine and having the whole bed to myself

I thought that politics weren't allowed to be discussed on this site.  There have been a number of posts here lately that are blatantly political.  Have the rules changed?

There are other appropriate places to discuss politics, even another site with lots of breast cancer survivors, but the moderators on this site have repeatedly asked that politics, especially outside the context of topics that directly impact our physical and mental health not be discussed here. 

Since there has been no response from the moderators to several posters who made pretty sweeping statements about all members of certain political parties, I was wondering if there had been a change in the rules here.

This is a public site, not a private club.  To make such statements about the motives and integrity of a significant percentage of the women who participate on this site invites a scathing response.   I wanted to clarify if the policy had changed, or if the moderators had just not yet noticed the posts, before someone not familiar with the history on this thread who saw the posts responded and received a suspension of her posting privileges if not a banning as a result.
