Tell Sunflowers that she is expected to report back to duty on 8/9 at exactly 0.01 HRS unless she's been decommissioned, which would be a travesty!

Scoot - I just purchased a Kindle Fire - you convinced me. I'm really excited. It has what I want and I really like the layout. My flip phone AND my Kindle Fire are both arriving tomorrow. Yey!

I can't even see bats on television.....I do like ostriches, flamingos and cranes are adorable.

Blue: I loved "The Glass Menagerie" - the old version.

Yes, and let's not forget "A Streetcar Named Desire".  Great performances by Brando and Vivien.

ETA - If we start talking movies this thread will fly.  I'm a movie buff!

Ok, I'm weird.  While they make me nervous, I am intrigued by bats.  Don't want to be too close - afraid of rabies - but they are such interesting creatures.  They have been maligned by Hollywood and horror writers.  They are highly social, creating complex social structures, and they are wonderful mothers.  I bought my daughter a book about bats when she was around 10 - she was crazy about them.

I also like birds, found that they're much more intelligent than people give them credit for, but everyone likes birds.  As a public defender, I had to put in a word for bats.

They are also amongst our closest relatives, I believe (shudder at the thought).

Romney doesn't have foot-in-mouth disease - his foot resides in his esohpagus. I think the man has to get around on his hands at this stage.

Otherwise, this campaign season is horribly boring. My take: because the republicans have been campaigning against the black man ever since he came to office, so the only difference now is that most of the anti-Obama rhetoric is coming from Romney and not from Boehner and McConnell. It's been a four year campaign. Barack will win, but the GOP war of attrition is costing the country every day.

He suggested that Israeli "culture" contributed to the country's success - in a way that prompted an angry retort from Abbas, who said Romney made it sound as though Israeli culture was superior to Palestinian culture.

Thus, he offended TWO heads of government in one trip. Way to go, Mitt!

I honestly think this time he was just sucking up to Netanyahu - I don't think he meant to insult the Palestinians, but Mitt is kind of tone deaf. If I wanted to suck up to the Israelis (and "Bibi" specifically), I think I would have gone a different route. I think any conscientious American should know that alluding to "culture" as part of a nation's success is, shall we say, fraught with historically bad precedents.

Clueless twit. As I said earlier. Lacking in empathy. Mitt just can't put himself in other people's shoes, whereas Churchill and FDR could.

Don't come to central Tx if you are afraid of bats. At sunset, millions of Mexican free tail bats pour out from under the Congress Ave bridge in Austin. Closer to me, one of the bridges in Round Rock produces the same phenomenon.

I have to confess, the sight at sunset is just amazing. I drive down now and then and wait for them to emerge.

Of course the bats are super important to agriculture as they fly out at night to eat insects.

I love bats, but then I love almost all animals. Would adopt and take care of every one of them if it was possible. Just put food out for the bunnies, squirrels and birds. Smile

Now to the grim stuff. My turn at the dentist is coming up tomorrow, UGH. I'll be getting a partial crown. Cry I too had a sadistic dentist as a child.

Dentists' offices should be renamed Torture Chambers! I was told they set aside 2 hours for me. YIKES!

I'll let you know how it goes. Good luck with your upcoming ordeal Kira!

Oh Blue - how I do love the movies - dh and I used to go every weekend when we were first married and I mean every weekend - I also used to love the CBC channel in Montreal in the 60s because they played old movies at midnight every Friday and Saturday - that's when I watched lots of movies from England.  I am particularly fond of Godfathers 1 and 2 - 3 wasn't as good but better than most movies that people flock to.  I love ALL Hitchcock movies and one of my favourites was Marnie.  Breakfast at Tiffany's was on last week and I spent a few hours watching it for the umpteenth time.  I could go on and on and on....but I won't.

I like bats, too. It's neat to sit out in the back yard at sunset and listen to them squeaking as they dive-bomb the bugs. I've been to Carlsbad Caverns twice - I like caves, too, but the big draw was sitting in the amphitheater at the cave entrance at sunset and watch them come swirling out for the night. Camera flashes strictly prohibited as they could foul up the bats' sonar. You can also see raccoons and even snakes gather on the hill opposite the amphitheater. The guides say they're hoping a bat gets confused and bumbles close enough for them to reach out and snatch a meal.

And they can eat their weight in bugs every night, so thumbs up for bats. You can build bat houses near a source of water for them to nest in as their natural habitat is disappearing. The houses have thin slots open only at the bottom and with a small dowel rod at the top for them to perch on. Their feet are naturally in the closed, or grasping position, which is how they can sleep and not fall. They have to consciously relax their feet to let go, which is the opposite of most animals, although I'm not sure about birds, which bats aren't.

Several bridges here in central TX have an unusual slotted design underneath. The bats love it. There is also a cave to the west with many more thousands of bats.

Sometimes hawks hang out on the lamp posts on I35 and try to grab themselves a bat or two for dinner. Ewww

Each year at the end of July there is some sort of migration of bats in this area. And each year the stupid one finds its way into my house. Last night was this year's event. Now that I no longer have a cat to deal with the situation, I turn off the lights and hide in a room with the door shut and towels around the edges of the door. By morning the bat is gone. How it got in and how it got out are beyond me. On night two (tonight) I am a bit leery that the darned thing is still somewhere in the house. Bats belong outside. Those of you who love bats are more than welcome to this one. And next year's too.

I find bats fascinating creatures.   I love to watch them from afar, but lassie, I agree with you about having one in your house.  Bats do carry rabies and the few cases that we've had in the US in the past 50 or so years have been from bats.  One case in Texas a few years ago, I believe.  Still, they are incredibly important to the environment, and there's a lot of concern about them in the northeast dying from white nose syndrome, i think it's called.

Yorkie - good luck at the dentist.  The anticipation is the worse.

Athena - if you think about Romney's remarks, they are not only insulting to Palestinians.  He's basically saying:  Jews are good at making money, which has been the stereotype of Jews for hundreds of years.  A rabbi in Israel pointed that out yesterday.

Went further on my ride today - came home the long way and racked up 8.4km. I'll do that for the rest of the week. I even made it all the way up the difficult street near home.

Having a day off tomorrow to go and see my onc and get my eyes tested. Also having lunch with a friend from the Aussie BC boards.

Steve called me today - doesn't sound like he's having a nice time - there are a couple of blokes on the trip who are a pain. He said the tides aren't right for them to fish - high tide morning and evening and they can't get up the beach.

Meanwhile, I'm enjoying my daily Lean Cuisine and glass of wine and having the whole bed to myself :)

Hello ladies Smile  Sorry I've been gone so long but in the last 5 days I put in 25+ hours of overtime.  I'm over stressed and over tired and fairly sick of sitting in front of a computer, as that was what I was doing all of that time.  In fact, that's pretty much what I do every stinkin' day....  I want to retire!!!

I didn't read all the missed pages, but did notice that Sunflowers is still missingCry.  I sure hope she comes back when the suspension is over.

Susie, we've had some pretty extreme tides up here as well.  I heard that some ferry runs are cancelled today because the tides were too much.  It's not stopping my hubby from fishing, though, and he just called me to let me know that he caught a salmon this morning - guess what we're having for dinner!!!  Smile

I'm hoping that Democrats get out and vote.  They aren't fired up this year like they were 4 years ago, and though I (personally) believe there are more Dems around - we are a fairly laid back bunch.  Republicans are anything but laid back, so they'll be out in droves.  Even though they don't like Mittens, they'll still vote for him because he's not Obama.

Oh yeah, and I loved seeing all the bats in Austin.  What a cool sight that was.  I'm not afraid of bats, I like watching them flit through the air gathering up insects.  I love birds.  Crows are a real favorite of mine, even though one hit me in the head the other day.  There's a path by the water where I love to walk.  It turns out that some people have started to feed their apple cores (and other such things) to the crows along there.  I guess he (or she) was angry that I didn't offer it anything! Laughing

I thought that politics weren't allowed to be discussed on this site.  There have been a number of posts here lately that are blatantly political.  Have the rules changed?

There are other appropriate places to discuss politics, even another site with lots of breast cancer survivors, but the moderators on this site have repeatedly asked that politics, especially outside the context of topics that directly impact our physical and mental health not be discussed here.

Since there has been no response from the moderators to several posters who made pretty sweeping statements about all members of certain political parties, I was wondering if there had been a change in the rules here.

This is a public site, not a private club.  To make such statements about the motives and integrity of a significant percentage of the women who participate on this site invites a scathing response.   I wanted to clarify if the policy had changed, or if the moderators had just not yet noticed the posts, before someone not familiar with the history on this thread who saw the posts responded and received a suspension of her posting privileges if not a banning as a result.

He actually fishes in Puget Sound before they head up the river(s).  We'll probably weber a filet, though my favorite of the moment is poached, I think my hubby prefers it grilled on the weber with a little smoke added.

    PatMom,

No one is responding so there is nothing to get one's knickers in a twist.  People sometimes just need to vent.  No one has to agree or disagree.
