Rosemary - more smiles, you and Katherine Hepburn.

Gorgeous SUNNY day here, whew, what a relief after the unseasonalable heat.

Hope any friends in CO are not near the fire, and those in the UK are staying dry.  Strange world....

Sadly, this is very true in Seattle these days. It's about 59 degrees right now.  I'd gladly take some of the heat from some of you-maybe make it so we all have a nice average temp-maybe about 80?

It has been gloomy weekend. It is so hard to want to do anything when it's so dreary out! I'm thinking we have a few more days till the tropical storm in the gulf has passed us by. I sure could use some sunny days even if their hot!

Asking for advice from the puppy folks...

We just got back from a weekend vacation.

The neighbor was taking care of our dogs.

7 month old foster puppy came out of her crate but would not go outside or back in the crate.

    She was trembling, growling etc.

She has met the neighbor before and seemed ok with him.

He spent a good deal of time trying to catch her and so left her out inside the house.

She ripped up a photo album, peed/pooped in house, chewed on the dining room chair etc.

I had not idea she would behave this way.

When he called me on vaca he was out of breath and I told him to try sitting with the other dogs and some peanut butter and see if she would come to him.  No go.

    Any ideas for the future?

    Thanks.

Ang I don't have any advice to offer but this is what happened to me this morning with my pooch.

Well the week started off rotten. Almost killed Lilah with a friend's lame brained idea. Gave her a bone on Saturday, even boiled it. She ate all the bone marrow which made her very sick and thickened her blood to the point that this morning at 5 she was cold and unresponsive. Rushed her to the Vet Hospital and they revived her. Thought for sure she was a gonner. She's still there on IV but at least she was wagging her tail and recognized me at 8:30 this morning. I will NEVER deviate her diet again even when well intentioned advice is given. Her glucose level was 0 and here temp was 34. YUP she was at death's door.  Goes to show.......stick to what we know!  Be it diet or cancer treatment.  The vet said bone marrow is too fatty.  He highly recommends against it, be it a large dog or a 4 pounder like my Lilah.

Gives new meaning to that old childrern's song with the phrase "nick nack pattywhack give the dog a bone?

Bluester you never, ever give a dog a cooked bone.................

bones and if you feed your dog meat should always be raw..............

raw bones are excellent for the pooch...........

Does the fat content change when you boil it?

Be careful Shokk.  So far a free bone has cost me $1200.  My vet said no bone marrow.   She didn't even know I had boiled it.

actually the whole chemistry of the bone changes.......emzynes, the protein itself, the marrow .......

but according the my kidlet it softens the bone where it makes it much easier for the dog to be able to splinter it and can cause problems in his/her digestive track even a piece of bone could cause a hole in their tummies..........

I always thought the marrow was good for a dog. I also heard raw was okay but not cooked. The bones can splinter when cooked. It's funny because you see them in the store with something on them to make them taste good. I always thought they were cooked, but maybe not.

I will add we never give any bones to out 2 dogs, but they do get raw hamberger meat when we bring it home!

Could be true but she didn't eat any of the bone, just the marrow.  Anyhow her blood test showed 2/3's of the vial was so fatty when the twirled it around that it turned white.  No more bone marrow for that little pooch.

blue we had something very similar happen a few years back. Keep a close eye on what's going on at the vet. We didn't and got a call a few hours later he had died. Our personal vet felt the  emergence hospital had given to many pain killers to quickly. That is why no bones for your dogs. Good luck!Frown

Kira, we transferred her over to our regular vet who is continuing the same IV and keeping a close eye on her.  He has a list of what she has received.  He told me if I need to give her a treat in the future, give her doggy biscuits because they are low in fat.   Same advice, no bones, or marrow.

    Wow blue~

That sounds similar to the mistake I made a couple weeks ago.

Mind you, I worked at a vet office all through high school.

We had mealybugs on our tomato plants.

The neighbor said to put used coffee grounds all along the base of the plants.

Well, I did and a couple hours later realized that foster puppy was acting like a total whack.

Looked outside and all the coffee grounds had been eaten?

Our puppy was sitting still but her eyes were zooming around in her head.

Called my vet who said "You know, coffee can kill a dog.  Did you not learn anything when you worked here?"

OK, I was in high school.

She said I could induce vomiting but I was not sure how long it had been since ingested.

Told me to keep a close eye and take her to ER if needed.

She bounced around the room for a couple of hours then started to go to sleep.

My daughter thought she was dying but she was obviously getting tired.

    Next day seemed fine.

Hugs to you and your pooch.

Blue, what a scare....glad your four-legged one is on the mend.

Growing up, I think we occasionally gave our dogs fake bones, and all they ever did was bury them. They ATE flea collars and cushions and never seemed to suffer medical consequences. Some dogs are indestructible. One of our German Shepherds actually swallowed a tennis ball once and expelled it in the car on the way to the vet's.

Ang, coffee and chocolates are poison for dogs.  Glad I'm not a dog...I'd be dead!

    LOL Athena.

Here's a pic of my baby with the IV hookup as we transferred her to my reg. vet.  Don't look at my third boob.  LOL!

Oh dear Blue - how awful.

On the bone thing - have NEVER given bones to dogs - only milk bone dog biscuits - did break down once and give previous dog a "greenie" supposed to be wonderful - he nearly strangled on it and required a vet's intervention - then I googled and found there were many complaints about these supposedly healthy treats - I think boring old "milk bones" have been around forever for a reason.

That said, we had a pair of labs who ate everything - doors, desks, shoes, socks you name it they ingested it and managed to live to 15 and 14 years respectively.

My dad's dogs wsere the same.  They ate everything in sight.  Outside dogs.  You guys should have seen me this morning.  I was climbing the stairs 3 at a time to put on a bra and shorts.  For me that's a great feat.  Ray couldn't believe his eyes.  We'll be laughing about this in a few days!

So much to catch up on - just read 4 pages of posts in this thread.

Glad to hear the tests were "boring"

Blue - sorry your pooch had to go to the vet.  Yep, a free bone cost you a ton of money.  Never knew you couldn't boil bones but then again I don't give my dogs bones because they end up fighting one another.  One will hide her bone and then try to steal the other dog's bone.

Sunflowers - I recently took up sewing and I am loving it.  I sewed one dress using cotton and then a long summer dress using a Island Batik Rayon that I just love.  I prefer to sew with Rayon or a raw type silk even though the fabrics are expensive, I like the feel of a good silky rayon and it is easy to sew as cotton.

I went to the sewing store - bought a pattern and then went to my favorite fabric store and bought material for two dresses.  $82 later I walked out of the store.

Just got back from Florida and had a wonderful time with dh's family and my two cousins that were also there.  We all spent time together on the beach, etc.  I am hoping that dh will want to retire in Florida in the Santa Rosa Beach area.

I missed the lobotomy stuff - guess I will have to search and try to figure out what happened while I was away but would love to get a PM directing me to somewhere specific!

I was on dh's laptop for a couple of minutes here and there every couple of days while in Florida - can't believe the difference in how the site looks between his laptop and my desktop.  I hate the look from my desktop!  I even downloaded google chrome as that is the browser on the laptop and that even made it worse so I don't know what the difference is between his computer and my computer but it is frustrating as heck!  I have a totally white background whereas he has the soft blues and grays.  Active topics fit the entire page on his computer whereas I only see three columns on my desktop.

    Has anyone heard from Scoot?

I don't get it - I've always given bones to my dogs - both raw and cooked, but usually raw and NEVER EVER chicken bones.  The dogs would chew on 'em for hours and then go bury 'em.  They never had any health problems as a result of bones.  But it really sucks that your baby got sick.  No more bones for him!!!!

When I was growing up, we had a dog(dauchshund/chihuahua mix) that ate EVERYTHING. Plastic butter tubs, crayons, entire bones, you name it. If it wasn't up high, he found it and ate it. Nothing ever bothered him(though he had some interesting poops) until the thing that killed him at 14-he got into the garbage and ate the rind from an acorn squash.

Blue-I'm so sorry your baby is sick.

Blue-----So sad about Lilah, is Virgil handling this episode all right or is he wanting extra attention in this emergency?

Years ago we had a Lab/Coyote mix that enjoyed apples {NO NOT APPLE},ice cream and most table scraps, and she was always SKINNY,ribs showing, etc.  One Thanksgiving she ate all the turkey meat left on the bones and then the bones, she cleaned out the roasting pan!  Camping she ate a 5lb ham,and once got a 2lb box of See's candy from under Christmas tree, without putting any other packages in a mess.  She was a really good dog and miss her.  Animal tales are so much fun and so much misery!!!!!!

Hoping everyone has a good week----------------kad2kar

Jancie - I'm lurking! Finally got our horses out here from OK and my daughter's from PA so things have been a tad busy. The trip out from OK was a hoot - passed through a town called Toad Suck, Arkansas. I am not making that up.

OK was miserably hot and dry, so dry. I hope they don't have a repeat of last year's drought conditions.

Blue - so sorry about your little baby! Was the bone supposed to be a folk or natural remedy for something?

Sorry Scoot, should have put this in the alt section!  hahhaahhaha!!!

Virg has been sleeping since we got back.  I think he was up with her all night because when I came down at 5 a.m., he was terribly excited and running around, instead of that "get lost, leave me alone, it's too early in the morning" look.  Actually, I never get up that early in the morning unless I'm having brain surgery or sumthin.  Might be he woke me up telepathically.  I am in tune, you know.  hahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!
