Athena - I'm going to meet up with ChrissyB and Steve and I are taking her for lunch to a small winery that has a fab restaurant. Their wines are really nice and not available in outlets, so we will probably buy some while we're there. Of course we wil have to spend some time with the baby
Really looking forward to meeting Chrissy and giving her a big hug. -
Bummer - time to get ready for work
-
Glad that you are meeting with Chrissy - she seems like such a great person!
-
Congratulations on boring, Mary. May all future tests be equally without excitement.

-
Sunflowers, congrats and to happy sewing. I sew, quite a bit and my daughter has picked up the habot from me, although she is much better at it than I am.
My latest creation, my first "mastectomy dress"

If you need anything that can be done web-wise, I would be happy to help. I think my daughter also picked up good tricks from youtube videos.
-
Momine - you look great - love the dress. My mother was a professional dressmaker, so I learned to sew at a very early age. When I didn't work, I made a lot of the kids stuff, but no time for that now. I have a Bernina but it doesn't see the light of day very often. I was working on a quilt while I was off work but it's been abandoned again.
-
Thanks, but that means you really know how to do this. I mostly improvise, and only make it work because I am dogged (and have a slight perfectionist streak). I made TONS of dresses for my kid when she was little. I didn't like those big, poufy polyester jobs they had in the shops, so I would buy some cute calico and a bit of cotton lace and set to work. It was way cheaper too, and the things I made myself could go in the wash and had stuff lke covered seams.
-
YAY for boring Mary!
Momine, lovely. I used to sew a LOT. LOved it and miss it but my limitations are what they are.
Athena and Sunflowers.........I smell something, and it really stinks!
Susie, Enjoy the new grandchild. I live for mine!!!!!!!!!
-
WOW, momine, YOU and your dress are fantastic! Look at those perfect details, the way the straps fit, that is so much more than I'm even imagining right now! I'd be afraid to touch fabric that looks as much like silk as your dress does. WOW. Just WOW!
I'm playing with muslin, the cheapest plainest fabric I could find - even using different colors on the bobbin, and thread holder, so I can keep checking the tension....baby steps...
-
Your dress looks absolutely beautiful - good job. I used to do lovely appliques for the kids. I was just thinking - I made our son a lovely appliqued fleecy top when he was little. I'm sure I kept it - I should look for it and send it to him for Alexander or better still maybe give it to Annie for Nicholas seeing I don't trust my DIL.
-
I made 2 outfits with the raw silk. Not very hard to work with.
-
Blue - just pm'd you so we don't get banned...tee, hee....
-
Sun - I thought Caryn's post was exactly right and said so.
-
LOL - we were all posting virtually at the same time.
I've got nothing to do today as I handed my work over yesterday in case I was still sick - we're finishing at 12 to go for a team building Yum Cha and 10 pin bowling afternoon. I wish I could still bowl - I could have shown them a move or 2 - my knees won't do it now, but I did have a lane record once - 256. I'll just hang around for a while and sneak off home early.
-
susieQ - ain't it amazing someone only on bco for about 3 months, could "know" so much? Me think da Blue has the answer...
off to sew....
-
Different names, same putrid odor.

there is evil under the sun....on the back of a very physically ill woman.

I used to work at a fabric store and used to sew quite a bit. I made a lot of clothes for my daughter when she was little. I pretty much stopped when I went back to work. I still have my machine. It's pretty basic-it's not a serger, which it seems like is the "must have" type of machine these days.

Sun, you will get the hang in no time. It looks harder than it is. I like the raw silk, because it is relatively cheap, and I wash it before sewing. That way I have a washable silk dress for the summer.
-
Hurray for boring
I made 3 receiving blankets for the baby due in January. And half a pair of shorts and have to put everything away because the kids are comin over.
Is it Patty or Matty or Natty? I am so confused. The claws really came out.

I like coming here and reading everyone's boring news. Other than posting a rare comment on an innocuous thread, I've mostly been staying home. That's figuratively speaking.
Literally, Mr. otter and I have been driving all over the countryside. My M.I.L. crashed into a wall in her bathroom last month, which brought another hospital stay to make sure there wasn't a brain bleed that caused, or was caused by, the fall. The docs didn't find anything. We took her to her PCP, who ordered a followup CT scan and told us it showed evidence of brain injury. He set her up for a consult with a neurologist ("Why wasn't there a neurology consult while she was in the hospital???", otter wonders)... but the referral appt isn't until July!
So, we came back home and are waiting for that appt to find out why one side of M.I.L.'s mouth is droopy and she slurs her words when she's tired. We went back to visit her again this month, and to take care of our granddaughter while her mommy worked 18/7 finishing end-of-season projects. We just got home 2 days ago. Today we got a call that M.I.L. was back in the hospital, having developed weakness on one side, likely due to a mild stroke (my words). They think this is recent; I think not. I think there have been signs of weakness on her that side ever since the fall 4 weeks ago, but I'm not a doctor and I don't even play one on TV. We're heading back there tomorrow. In case anybody's wondering, "there" is Tulsa -- a 13-hour drive.
<sigh> But, we were supposed to be going to the North Country on Saturday for previously arranged events on behalf of my blood relatives. That will have to wait (most of it). [comments deleted]
I looked it up. Apparently, John Lennon wrote in the lyrics for one of his songs, "Life is what happens to you when you're busy making other plans." Yes.

[ETA: I deleted some stuff that I wrote because I was really frustrated about something but now I'm feeling better.]

Go to "Commemorating our loved ones" everyone - if you are so inclined. I posted about someone special there. One with two litties....

(((otter)))
-
Momine, I hope to have your figure one day....cancer took it away from me, then stress. You look lovely. Very European.
-
Hey susieQ~
Please say "Hi" to ChrissyB from me.
We have been "tea pals" as I have been trying to find her good teas here in Virginia to send her way...
Not as much fun as the wine, I know.

-
Hi Ang - yes I will give her your regards - I hope we hit it off - she is SO special.
-
Thanks Athena. I am only thin because I got rid of the cancer. My mother and I both had weight gain as a cancer symptom. Once the cancer started shrinking so did I. We shall see how long it lasts. Even cancer-free, I was normally 5-10 pounds heavier than I am now.
-
Beautiful dress Momine - looks like silk to me (I'm a silk fan - almost everything I make is silk). Next on the list are a couple shirts for my husband. I just bought 15 yards of silk broadcloth, so have enough to either make him 5 shirts or maybe 3 for him and something for me....
I also do a lot of dye work, so generally make stuff up in white and then dye it to the color(s) I want.I wish I could be thin like you....
-
Gumby, that sounds wonderful, silk broadcloath. Happy sewing!
Again, I am thin thanks to the cancer treatment and a low-carb diet. I was not always this slender.
-
gumby
I just bought paint for cloth in several colors, and several HUGE white men's tee shirts - to paint and cut up, and hopefully sew into, well, something. Think it will be quite a while b4 I venture into silk, but so lovely to think about....
