SAS, I love you. You are one kickass woman!!

Here we go again... radiation machine was broke on Friday so when I came in today I asked one of the techs if they had a chance to replace the light bulb in the machine. She looked at me like I was crazy while the other tech smiled and I mentioned.. machine was broke... light bulb. Anyway, she didn't seem in the best of spirits, but shit I'm the one dragging my ass in there each day to be zapped.
Then as I'm lying on the table, one of the techs mentions that my stickers need to be replaced and the area cleaned. I said, "No problem." The the same tech who didn't get the joke asks me if I'm sure I don't want the tattoos. I told her no that I don't want them. Then I was pissed that she even asked me and I said, "I didn't want them before and I still don't want them." WTF is it her business about my decision of NOT getting tattoos. I'm sure it would make things easier for them, but I don't care about their ease... I care about me.
Since she was aiming that machine at me, I felt like I couldn't go off on her. Who knows, maybe she would have zapped my face instead of my boob.
-
Give 'em hell, Rocky! I think people in these offices are stunned when we don't follow like sheep and when we make our own decisions about our treatment. How many zaps do you have left? I bought Aloe gel and kept it in the fridge. I would take a gob of it and a cotton ball in an empty pill bottle with me to radiation and apply it in the dressing room after a zap. Ahhhhh, cool booby! I often wondered what they would think if I passed out and they found it in my bag. "Why does this woman have a bottle of snot in her purse?"
Thinking about you every day! NIPS UP...CARRY ON!

Hi Rohanna! At first I thought I was getting 27 or 28 regular and 9 boosts, but when I mentioned to my new doc that I thought 5 boosts was the "going rate" he said okay.. let's do 5. He said the first RO was being more aggressive when she set up the plan, but that 5 would be fine. It's strange how easy and quick they'll make a change. Going with the current plan, I will have 15 regular plus 5 more. I'm still a long way off :-(.
I bought Miaderm and just like you, I bring it to the office and right after I'm zapped I put the lotion on. I'm starting to feel a little stingy towards my back. When did you start rads? How many have you done so far? Did you have to do any chemo besides Herceptin?
P.S . Love the picture of your daughter and the kitty.
RED HOT RADIATED NIPS... CARRY ON!

Yucky!! Don't you ladies know we are on this forum to CHEER people up? How dare you complain about your problems with bc. Go on Dr. Phil's show and make him crazy. I want to be cheered up! I am going to see if alt.nuts has some happy posts.
You want to REALLY hear some crap? I was seeing this weirdo (cheapo) therapist after I got PTST from surviving a cerebral aneurysm and I needed some tranquilizers to calm down the mess in what was left of my brain. "I" was really giving her therapy cause she got upset by everything it seems and then a year later after my aneurysm, I was diagnosed with bc and went to see her for my weekly visit. When I told her I missed the earlier week due to being diagnosed with bc, she got really, really upset! She ran from me to her desk and said she could NOT ever talk to me about cancer and she felt I did not need any more therapy. I asked her "what about my scripts for the PTST and she said she would continue to give me all the RXs I needed for that but I could NOT come back to see her now that I had bc!!
Creeps! I was scared silly and thought she knew I was going to "pass on" or something or had known many others who did. I also had a beloved relative who told me to "put my finances in order " so my family would know how to handle them when my time came! I thought "crap" is ANYONE going to believe I can survive this bc?? I was so angry!
THEN, I found bc.org and realized a LOT of women were surviving this demon from Hell inspite of what the crazies in my life were making me think! That was NINE years ago and I, thankfully, am still here to make as many people miserable as I can! I no longer live in the same city so I can't go by that "therapist from LALA land" and let her see I am still around. I don't know what my future will be with bc but I know giving up is not an option. So ladies bitch all you want, as far as I am concerned. It's that kind of spirit that keeps us surviving, imo. As long as we can gripe and complain about bc, it means we are still alive to do it so enjoy every minute you can! Have a good evening.

Yo, Rocky! I started rads the last week of June and finished the first week of August 2010. I'm still peeling once in a while. I got zapped 36 times, 8 of which were boosts. They were on the left side so now I get to worry about all the heart stuff. Crap! My onc wanted to wait and see about chemo because my margins were so clear. I haven't heard a word about it since. I'm taking Arimidex and don't have terrible SE's. I'm just down this week with yet another round of diverticulitis. That got a lot worse after treatment. ???
Medigal, where did that therapist get her license? Out of the back of a comic book? Did she even have a license? What a ditz!
schatzi, I'm sending you a picture!
-
schatzi, this is your Bean. (as in Mr.) Think how hard you'll kick it's ass. I'm Team Schatzi all the way!

rohanna: I think Donald Duck would have been a better therapist! The reason I went to her was I researched her on the internet and would you believe she was from a family of very special therapists! Her father even had papers written and published. She should never have gone into therapy! But I have always wondered if her irrational attitude was because maybe "she" had or had had bc or knew a loved one who did not survive it. She could have found a way to let me know tho without scaring me the way she ran from me! But she did have a license and was in my insurance network. I have never gone to another therapist since! I just get any meds I need from my primary doctor!
-
Just found out my DD at boarding school probably has whooping cough but the school won't release her to go home until my MO okays it. Until then she's stuck in isolation on a hard health center bed without anyone to talk to. Damn cancer. I just want to be able to be a normal parent.
-
Lulu, I'm so sorry to hear about your daughter. I hope she gets to come home and heals soon.
I'm going to be off for a few days, Ladies. Having another diverticulitis attack and this one's a bear. Till then, NIPS UP!

Rohanna, heal well.
Leah

rohanna, feel better soon!

Ro -thanks for the kind words and Bean------what a great visual------it will definitely get me through some rough spots. We need to have a talk about diverticulitis. I had a colon resection b/c of it. Learned too much too late.that was in 2001. Perhaps I should think about doing a topic on it. So, much that happens to us can lead to d-tic. Biggy can be pain meds that lead to constipation. Disruption of normal bowel flora caused by so many things i.e. so many antibx's that kill the good flora changing >>evacuation. I just wrote a long note to someone on the same topic maybe I can get her to send it back and I can edit out their names --that might work. I'll see what I can do.
Medigal-------that therapist needs a therapist
Rocky ditto to Leah's missive heal well and hope they can keep the light on
LULU unbelievable, first the idiot nurse, then the school woman. Squash for brains. First what about HIPPA rules. My guess , she's talking to everyone. With the kids there -----probably scaring the hell out of them b/c they haven't a clue what all this means.
-
I, for one, would really appreciate anything you can tell us re d-tic, Sheila. As you know, I now have a stoma as a result of d-tic and I don't have any idea how to avoid a recurrence once I have it reversed in March/April.
After Googling for awhile today, my head is awash with all the different theories as to cause etc,.
I never had constipation until I took pain killers, in 2008, for the Arthritis my GP said I had instead of the bone mets I really did have. While I was in hospital for stoma, I read an old Readers Digest article which said that Ibuprofen caused bowel perforation in people with d-tic.............and then another one on google today, saying that aspirin and NSAIDS can do the same thing!
Today, I read not to eat nuts, corn, seeds, fruit skins and many other things to avoid a re-run of d-tic, and then another link pops up to say all of the above is a load of rubbish.
My stoma nurse told me at my last visit that it is quite likely I will have a stoma re-run after this one is reversed as I will still have d-tic.
I am very confused to say the least at this point. Any help would be gratefully appreciated, Sheila, thank you.
Sheila.

AH been posting in a couple of places b/c I forgot who I was going to get info for. It will likely be spread over several posts.
definitions first. Diverticulosis-------condintion of----where small pouches form off the colon wall. This can start in the 3-4 th decade of life. Most people have them by the 7-8th decade. They may never cause a problem, and only be known about because a colonoscopy was done. These pouches are analogous to the bubbles formed on inner tubes when to much air pressure is put in the tire. In the case of the colon the pouches form b/c of too much pressure on the colon wall created by constipation.
Diverticulum(many)/ diverticula(single) is the name given to these pouches.
Diverticulitis is the word used to describe inflamation of one or many of these pouches. signs and symptoms. Pain, generally left sided, can be low middle and even low middle right. It depends on where the diverticula is inflamed. So, a low middle right one, can wrongly be assumed to be related to female organs .History of frequent constipation with severe pushing to evacuate stools. Outcome in time, one or more of these diverticula can rupture. This allows leakage of bacteria of the colon into the sterile abdomen. Another symptom can be what's called pencil thin stools. That means the stools start to become thinner and thinner over time. This is present in longstanding diverticulosis b/c the wall of the left colon starts to thinken to try and help push out the hard stool. Thus the channel that the stool goes through is narrowed and the stools become less and less bulky. There also can be bleeding b/c the blood vessels in this area are broken b/c of the pressure. This blood will be red b/c it is an active bleed. Versus blood coming from the stomach will be black b/c it's mixed with acid.
People that have diverticulitis may often have hemorrhoids too.
Diagnosis: by colonoscopy in a non acute situation. In the acute situation where a rupture is suspected a Cat scan is diagnostic treatment of choice. A scope done in the acute situation can cause further harm if the rupture was large. In fact if a rupture has occurred a scope generally won't be attempted for at least six weeks after healing is allowed to occur.
Management in the least acute situation to the most severe:
1. nothing by mouth until pain is gone and Oral antibx's> then advanced to clear liquids> something like Ensure or Boost
2.Next level the same as #1 except IV antibiotics. >the advance the same as with liquids
3.Next level same as #2 with surgery and possibly a colostomy that is reversible in several months. Food is not reintroduced until colostomy shows evidence of working
4. same as #3 except colostomy is permanent.

This was a post to someone else re: hemorrhoids, But all the concepts appy to the prevention of diverticulosis which leads to diverticulitis. For us the great offenders for causing both are PAIN MEDS, poor fiber diets, poor hydration, and alcohol. AND all the chemicals they give us that cause constipation.
Post hemorrhoidectomy:
it's truly a pain in the butt. I'm sure they gave him a ring to sit on.. Docs are different as to when they tell them to increase the fiber in their diet. The point of which is to allow for bulkier stools. When bulkier stools pass, they naturally dilate the anus. This helps to keep scar tissue from tightening the anal opening. At first he will not be happy. But there are several things that can help. The body has a natural time that it wants to evacuate in the morning. The key here is to never deny that urge. So, always allow time in the morning for this to happen. So, you need to factor in always getting up early enough to allow sufficient time to respond to the urge. Drinking a warm glass of water at least 8 oz's can help. For some it may have to be 2-3 glasses. Lemon added to the water helps some. Some swear by coffee. But hydration along with the fiber is a must. Too much fiber without proper hydration will lead to a dry constipated stool.
Backing up for a moment-----the large colon has several functions. One is related to the absorption of some nutrients, but that is not cogent to this conversation-------so I will bypass it.
The colon stores stool and reabsorbs water. Stool exits the small intestine on the right side lower quadrant. at that point it is the consistency of sand. It then travels up the right side across the top part of the abdomen , then goes down the left side, The last portion of the large colon is called the sigmoid colon. It generally has a shape that could be described as a "s". In truth, it's shaped differently to a degree in each of us. As the stool moves along this path more water is absorbed from it. By the time it reaches the sigmoid colon it becomes formed.
If the core body lacks enough water, it draws more fluid out of the stool. In this case then the stool that reaches the last part of the colon will be very dry-------constipated------hard. The muscles of the colon wall have a very hard time pushing it forward. If this occurs the stool in the rectal vault-the portion just above the anus becomes very hard and difficult to pass. and painful. They look like little hard rocks. In pushing this hard stool out, the pressure causes the blood vessels to dilate. These dilated blood vessels are called hemorrhoids.
They are analogous to varicose veins of the legs or esophageal varices of the esophagus, or aneurysms. The point being when blood vessels in the body are put under too much pressure in the body , they will dilate. Eventually they will burst and bleeding will occur. The larger the blood vessel when it bursts the greater the bleeding.
The needs of the body for fluids are dependent on climate to a great degree. Each individual has a different need. Your doc and reading will describe range. 8-12 oz glasses a day. But again each body is different. Plus there may be other conditions that can influence how much you can drink i.e heart and kidney disease.
Using two supplements can work to your advantage and also promote health of the rest of the body. Omega 3 OIL either Flaxseed or fish. Buy a good brand from a healthfood store. Some brands should never be exposed to heat and need refrigeration. I would never buy off the super market shelf. The second is superdohilous -it has acidopilous and multiple other strains of normal colon bacteria. The quality again is based on where you buy it. Of course discuss this with your doc.
SO the plan to train the colon:
1.In the morning allow enough time to take a proper poop. That may mean adding ten to 15 minutes to your morning routine.
2 Immediately upon awakening drink the warm water 8 -16 oz's. That will begin the process that gets the trained colon to be prepared to function within a short time. Continue with usual routine shower / shave etc. As soon as the colon signals it's ready to go. Don't delay -go. If you delay the body starts to reabsorb that water from the stool at the end colon---constipation.
3. Keep the colon healthy by eating between 25-35 grams of fiber a day-average 30gms.The amount needed is being changed by science in these last few years, so don't be surprised when you read different numbers. General Mills Fiber One has the highest cereal fiber content in the smallest amont of food . I swear they stole my phrase taste like cardboard. "No longer tastes like cardboard". Definitely has improved over last few years. If you started off each day with a 1/3 bowl you can meet a 1/3 if the days requirements. The average American only gets 12-13 gms of fiber a day.
4 Drink enough fluids otherwise you will become constipated. 8-12 glasses a day.
5 Consider adding omega 3 (flax or fish) and acidophilous to diet(more that what yogurt offers)
6 Be aware of the things that alter bowel function------PAIN meds, alcohol, antibiotics, other prescription meds. Dehydration on weekend outside work days. illness.
This covers the basics, great topic eh?

RO and Aussie sheila. Hope this all helps.
Aussie your reading on the drugs is true. MY nemesis was Celebrex. It had a black box warning in the Pysicians Desk Reference not to be used with anyone with a history of ulcers, diverticulosis, diverticulitis, has been known to cause spontaneous gastric rupture. I took Celebrex in 2001 and ended up with a colon resection. I avoided the colostomy by having the offending portion out. In the diverticulosis section I had # 2.--- we then waited six weeks and did and elective colon resection.
As far as Nsaids look at the package insert for any drug. It will be the same as the PDR. If it advises that it should not be taken under the same circumstances as the Cox 2 inhibitors>Celebrex, mefoxicam etc. Don't do it. Ask your pharmacist to look the drug up in the PDR.
All Narcotic pain meds cause constipation.
As far as food , there is so much controversy on this, it's a quagmire. So, I'll offer no comment on it . Sorry, it's that controversial. I won't even comment on what I do.
Never heard the word stoma rerun. She may be referring to a colonoscopy.
Should probably make a topic thread out of this material. Constipation for cancer patients is a huge issue. I'd have to have your permissions to C&P to a new thread.

Apple sweetie, Senna has been used for years as a stool softner. Please, be the first to post on the poop thread LOL
Just C& P your question over
OOPs we are here.

Ro and Aussie, I just took names out for the new thread. There's quite a few suggestions already. Punning encouraged LOL

I came here to complain and then laughed when I read "Why does this woman have a bottle of snot in her purse?" Then I read about diverticulosus. Good to know. Thanks for the new thread. Needed that after surgery. Dumb docs didn't get me clued in and I had rocks for poop. Those pain meds did me in. Now I can't remember what the heck I as going to complain about. Hahahaha.
-
H&C I so get it we do this all the time-------usually this thread isn't as technical as I made it. That's why I made a topic thread. Too many questions that related to pooping. '
Go back even further and you will find lots of stuff to make you laugh

Breast cancer and shit... sure they're related :-).

I just have to say that I love this topic!
"Breast cancer and shit... sure they're related :-)."
"Why does this woman have a bottle of snot in her purse?"
I also forgot what I was going to complain about. That's a great thing!
Oh! and constipation...my nemesis!

So, there I was feeling good yesterday and thinking... well my hair is starting to grow back and it's salt and pepper looking, so maybe I should use the Clariol #2 (washes out in 28 washes) that I used to use before BC.
Well, stupid me didn't realize that I still had too much scalp showing. Now I'm missing my salt and pepper :-(. I washed my sorry little 1" worth of hair about 20+ times this evening and it's still a very light brown/red haze. So much for washes out in 28. I'm cheezed. Here I was thinking I'm gonna do something nice for myself and now I will probably have to get a haircut sooner to cut this color off as it's probably going to look silly with the grey and black growing back. Here's to hoping I can laugh about this one in a few days!
-
Maybe they have a hair dye remover like the one for clothes?
-
I found an even better remover... I buzzed the crap off! :-). I figure it's better to have a G.I. Jane for a month and I don't have to look at my mistake anymore. Also, since that first inch was chemo grow out... perhaps it wasn't all that healthy anyway. Okay, now I'm just rationalizing :-).
Here's to making ourselves crazy (as if we don't have enough to go nuts over)!
NIPS UP! TAKING CHARGE!
-
Rocky you were on the cutting edge of the new style LOL's. My son was describing restaurants in St Pete. One he described as great food , but it's really new age , he'd be considered to preppy going in there LOL's again b/c he was always on the cutting edge of style. Whats that make me @ 61. I just had to laugh b/c he used to be a trend setter. I just asked him as a young neighbor was passing one day with a mohawk and a pink underlay---PLEASE<PLEASE don't ever come home that way. When it was "IN" for the guys to have frosted hair. I gave in and said -----"okay, but it's going to be done right" off to the hairdressers. I agree with your buzz that first bit of hair isn't as nice. So, now you'll probably get lots of dumb questions, like are you back on tx's--------duh.......

Hey Constipation is rocking almost a 1000 hits in 3 days. Thank you medical establishment for creating another moving problem.
-
I saw 3 women at a pampered chef party the other night who I havent seen in about 3 years. So when the hostess introduced me one of them says "Yeah I remember you but your hair was different." OK. My hair is different it use to be red/auburn & curly, and now it's brown (some gray so I color it) and straight. Just how it came back. So I just comment back. "Well this is what I got after chemo." They she goes on to tell me that noooo. Hair grows back gray and curly after chemo and I don't know what I'm talking about and how come mine is now stick straight. She really went off the deep end. I was caught off guard as I haven't had this kind of shi++ in a while. I finally said. "Oh Really?", nodded to the other ladies and walked off. Geeze I just wanted to stuff those orange cheese puffs up her nose, She didn't have chemo, just blah, blah, blahing at me. Orange cheese puffs up her nose and a bright red tomato in her mouth. If she suffocated I would of told her to eat the tomato
