covertanjou, it's a good thing you didn't watch! Just an interesting tidbit about how many fans the Habs have.....I've only gone to one game and guess who was there? Viggo Mortenson (Aragorn from Lord of the Rings).....had a jersey on and everything. Weird huh?

Enjoyful -- Are you intentionally mis-spelling our Cdn Olympic hockey hero Sidney Crosby's name for a reason? IMWTK

Back to the oil business, folks:Update House Republicans are planning "legislation aimed at expanding domestic oil production in response to high gasoline prices," but CNN Money provides a reminder that more drilling won't drive prices noticeably lower:
According to a 2009 study from the government's Energy Information Administration, opening up waters that are currently closed to drilling off the East Coast, West Coast and the west coast of Florida would yield an extra 500,000 barrels a day by 2030.
The world currently consumes 89 million barrels a day, and by then would likely be using over 100 million barrels.
After OPEC got done adjusting its production to reflect the increased American output, gas prices might drop a whopping 3 cents a gallon.

Alpal, thanks. Hope someone tries something, whatever, to get this under control.
Interesting article I found in my NYT digest.

From a recent McClatchy-Marist poll [emphasis added]:
36% of U.S. residents think the volatility in the Middle East is at fault while 34% say U.S. oil companies are the culprits. 11% hold President Obama and the Democrats responsible, and 7% find fault with Congressional Republicans. Three percent of Americans blame state and local taxes, and one in ten -- 10% -- are unsure.
…
“There's plenty of blame to go around for high fuel prices in the minds of Americans,” says Dr. Lee M. Miringoff, Director of the Marist College Institute for Public Opinion. “Although this is an issue that hits close to home, right now it isn't being laid at President Obama's doorstep.”

Lindasa: That's what goes with being President. You get the "Cheers" but you also get the "Jeers" too when problems occur.

Shirley, is this what you were referring to when you said "As far as the "Canada" thing....I'll believe it when I see it."
"Canada is the single largest foreign supplier of energy to the United States--providing 20% of U.S. oil imports and 18% of U.S. natural gas imports. Recognition of the commercial viability of Canada's oil sands in Alberta has raised Canada's proven petroleum reserves to 170 billion barrels, making it the world's second-largest holder of reserves after Saudi Arabia. Canada and the United States operate an integrated electricity grid which meets jointly developed reliability standards and provide all of each other's electricity imports. Canada is a major supplier of electricity (mostly clean and renewable hydroelectric power) to New England, New York, the Upper Midwest, the Pacific Northwest, and California. Canadian uranium helps fuel U.S. nuclear power plants."
-
At some point we will have to reduce consumption. China and India have greatly increased their demand for oil and are willing to pay for it. The US uses 22% of the world's oil and produces 11%. We can not double oil oil production at least in the short term. We only have 2% of the world's oil reserves. These figures are according to the Secretary of Energy, whose name escapes me. (Oh I do so love chemo brain and Femara{sarcasm}).
If we drill and use up our reserves, then where will we be? I will be looking into solar energy at least to heat our garage, this summer, and I believe that small windmills for home use are on the horizon. (That is what I have heard, nothing to back me up on that one. You can now get LED bulbs for home use if you don't like CFLs. I will be getting a car with better gas mileage this summer. There is a lot we can do. I live in the country so I can't take public transportation but I can grow veggies and save on fuel to get to the store. There are a lot of things we should do to save energy and reduce our reliance on fossil fuel.
-
rosemary, it's very nice that you can afford to do all those things. Not everyone can. Including me. We just sold one of our cars. We don't need two cars so we kept the most reliable.
-
Oh Shirley
I cannot afford to do all that. When I make my last car payment next month we will pay off some medical bills and then in a couple of months buy what will be my last car as I will retire in about 7 or 8 years. I am looking into solar but unless we can recoup the price fairly soon we will not do it. LED bulbs are $35 dollars each so I use cfl's. A windmill would be great,I really want one but have not seen ones that are small enough. My point is we can all do something.Veggie seeds are cheap and you don't need much land(I grew veggies on 1/8 acre in town. Even turning down the heat or turning off lights helps.
But since this is America and Americans don't want to do without what we really need is new sources of enegry and the money to fund research. Maybe that should come from a new tax on oil because Obama is right people don't conserve unless they think energy is too expensive.
We can not meet our own energy needs and will not be able to unless something changes.
-
Oops. meant Linda. Sorry, I have CRS also.
-
Well, that's a relief. LOL
-
My husband bought a used Mercedes diesel and converted it to run off veggie oil. We get used oil for free from a local restaurant. So, he drives for free, and the conversion kit and oil filtering unit have been paid for off his savings. Many days he rides his bike to work.
I figure I'll be driving his car this summer, as my commute is about 35 miles. Even with getting 27 mpg, I'd do better with the veggie-mobile.
Solar power is NOT cheap to set up. We did this last year when the local energy company was giving hefty rebates. Our big solar array cost $68K. Who can afford that? Even with the $35K rebate, we paid the rest, then got a third of that balance back on our taxes. It's great to see our power bill at zero most months (sunny ones!) but it's not like we can tap into our array to use what power we generate. It all goes to the grid, and our consumption of power is balanced against our production.
I imagine the same would hold for home wind power, though I can't say for sure.
Living in the mountains as I do is not condusive to public transportation and most gardening. So we'll try to consume less
-
Wow!
What a great idea your hubby had. I didn't even know it was possible to run a car on veggie oil.
And solar power!!! You two are way ahead of the average in terms of doing your part for the environment.
So if your consumption of power was 1,000 kw per year and you generated 1,200 kw in a year, would you be reimbursed for the extra 200 kw? Or do they just rebate you for the amount consumed and the value of the extra 200 kw goes to the grid?
The price will drop (I hope) when more people sign on, Right now, it is very high. How many years to payback do you think?
-
I don't know how much more we can cut back. I don't keep the house too warm in the winter or too cool in the summer...unless I'm cleaning and I'm sweating my butt off. I don't flush the toilet everytime when...well...I pee unless I know company's coming. It drives me nuts to see lights on when they're not needed..so lights off here. My DH and I don't drive that much unless we go to Charlotte. There's only so much one can cut back on.

To all the hockey fans: Congrats to the US women's hockey team. They beat the Canadian Team today. As a side note, I can't imagine why anyone would dislike Syd the Kid! He's amazing, respectful, a good sport and from my hometown (not sure the last part counts but thought I'd throw it in)
Insurance., I couldn't agree more. We have to have insurance for everything but then we never want to make a small claim on anything because our premiums will skyrocket. Some of it is such a scam.
PS: Go Habs!

I just watched Anderson Cooper and he was interviewing the Donald about the birther issue. What a load of crap! I was embarrassed for the Donald. He just kept repeating the same rhetoric I've read on line. It sure makes him look stupid. If he runs for the republicans, they can kiss their endeavours good-bye!
GO HABS!

The Donald's responses to AC's questions were straight out of a done-on-the-cheap B movie.
GO HABS!

A few sad things about the Donald
1) he is seemingly nuts with the birther issue
2) his hair makes him look like a caricature. Is that the best branding he could come up with? Jeesh!
3) he'll never know what it's like to be a Habs fan! Now that's really sad!
I could likely list ten things but I don't want to infringe on Letterman's nightly ritual.
Blue: crazier things have happened! They tried to run Palin for VP and look where that got them. Mmmmm, Palin and the Donald on the ticket. Now that would be a Hoot! I'd have to PVR all the late night comics and if laughter is the best medicine, I'm sure we'd have a cure!
One week to go before our own election and it looks like the NDP is blocking the BLOQ. -
Ohhhh pickle - Sid the Kid is polite, respectful, intelligent, articulate, a great player, and A PENGUIN. I can't like any Penguin!
GO HABS!

GO LIGHTNING!!!!

Donald's doing it on purpose to discredit Republicans and drive independent voters to the other side. Why else would he do it? Other than being a nut, that is.

CNN reports on their own investigation of the birther non-issue:
CNN investigation: Obama 'birther' claims have no merit

E, I think you are spot on. The bad hair Donald is trying to fracture and discredit the Reps. Stinks but whatever. There really aren't any Rep. candidates worth a plugged nickel anyway. Alfred E Neuman is looking pretty good about now or maybe the Easter Bunny.
