She didn't say that PP provided mammograms.
-
This is what I do not understand. How can some say that they do not support universal health care on one hand, and not support PP on the other? How can you pass judgement on those who choose abortion (whether you believe it to be moral or not) and not want to support those children afterwards? It doesn't make sense to me.
If we are not willing to support those who make bad judgements OR those who find themselves in needy situations through no fault of their own....why do we bother living in societies in the first place? Isn't that why tribes, towns, cities and nations were formed? To better life for ALL. To support ALL.
-
Do they really? This I didn't know.
-
Does Planned Parenthood offer referrals for mammos if a breast exam says it's necessary? If the answer is yes, then Ms Richards did NOT lie, because she did not say that PP provided mammos, she said PP provided access to mammos.
There is no indication that Ms Richards does not understand the services provided by her organization, or that she lied.

http://www.plannedparenthood.org/ppsi/free-mammograms-pap-smears-17602.htm
Planned Parenthood of Southeast Iowa provides free mammograms. I'm sure there are more locations that do, also,
Thanks for the heads-up, hillck!

I found this comment on theblaze.com:
"... Why should I pay for anyone’s healthcare unless it comes out of my insurance premiums. If you want a breast exam, then pay for it. You have no right to my money or the doctors labor. If it’s so important then shell out your own cash."
And if you don't have money? I guess you just get sick and die. Sucks to be you.
-
"Healthcare access" does not mean that any one place does everything right on site.
PP functions like a PCP. Your family doctor does not do CTs or XRays - your onc does not do PETs - but you cannot access those services without them. Same thing. PP does the necessary referrals at the least and quite often can also provide the funds to pay for it or find a reduced cost provider. That is providing 'access'.
I simply don't see any lie here that needs defending. Their clients will lose their 'access' to mammograms unless they can afford to go to a private doctor/hospital to get those services. Or find another program that does the same thing. But as mentioned elsewhere ... defunding Title X would have done away with the other avenues also.
-
Just now getting caught up on this thread ...
A shout out to Gracie .. OMG .. I would have passed out if it was my son!!

Edited: Cindy ... you're most welcome here! Jump right in!!

PP does provide mammos through their referral of the BCCS program. They pay for the mammogram if it comes back normal. If the mammogram is abnormal and cancer is fund, medicaid through title X monies then covers it through the Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening Program.
-
Thanks, Bren!
-
So I guess we can all agree that Ms Richards actually DID know what she was talking about, and that she DID NOT lie! Okay, time for lunch!
-
Cindy ... I have to check into that. It may be affected through PP. The BCCS program is funded through the CDC as a federal program. Each state is given so much of the pie to spend on their local programs. Access to BCCS can be obtained through local health clinics (non-profits) and local county and state health departments.
You can go to any free clinic or health department in Virginia and request an examination by either the doctor or NP. If a lump is found or there is suspicion of cancer, the doctor or NP will refer you to your local breast clinic for a mammogram. This is part of the Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening program. However, if you are referred for a mammogram under this program, you must also have a cervical exam at the clinic or health department. If cancer is found on mammogram, state medicaid kicks in to cover the cost of your treatment ... for however long you are in treatment or if your financial situation changes.
This program saved my life as I am self-employed and did not have insurance when I found a lump in my breast. I swallowed my pride and went to a free clinic to have it checked. I was immediately fast-tracked into the BCCS program so I could get a mammogram ASAP. Because cancer was found, state medicaid kicked in to cover the costs of my treatment. Medicaid costs work on a sliding scale if you are in treatment, depending on your income.
Hope this helps.

I do not have the list of all of them, but some Planned Parenthoods do provide mammograms, clinical breast exams and other breast health services, so I do not see how Ms. Richards is being disengenuous in any way. Komen gives funds to Planned Parenthood for those services, and they also receive funds from the Breast and Cervical Cancer Program.
-
Grace boys! aren't they fun? certainly does provide evidence of what science has already determined---looking at things long term, being able to make good decisions, simply does not develop as a skill until you are in your twenties.
I agree that if PP pays for the mammogram which is provided at another facility, they are a provider.
As for Enjoyful's quote, really is there anything to add but:
"are there no prisons? . . . are there no workhouses?"

Title X funding information.
Over the past 40 years, Title X family planning clinics have played a critical role in ensuring access to a broad range of family planning and related preventive health services for millions of low-income or uninsured individuals and others. In addition to contraceptive services and related counseling, Title X-supported clinics provide a number of related preventive health services such as: patient education and counseling; breast and pelvic examinations; breast and cervical cancer screening according to nationally recognized standards of care; sexually transmitted disease (STD) and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) prevention education, counseling, testing and referral; and pregnancy diagnosis and counseling. By law, Title X funds may not be used in programs where abortion is a method of family planning.

PP does not use Title X funds to pay for their abortion services. Please get your facts straight JB.

Online gifts to Planned Parenthood have surged by 500 percent since Republicans passed a budget amendment stripping the group of its federal funding.
NARAL Pro-Choice America’s email activist list grew by 1,000 subscribers per day at the height of the budget debate.
I wonder if the same thing is happening to NPR and PBS? According to my local PBS radio station (in Buffalo), over 300,000 (and growing) have indicated their support for public broadcasting of quality programs. -
Let me get this straight. JB, you're saying that PP uses taxpayer money to pay for abortion services, but classifies them as something else so that they don't violate the law? And that their auditors have missed this for all these years?
What information do you have that the rest of us don't?
-
Hi JB...
Could you provide us with information to back up your statement? I think we'd all be interested to see it.... Thanks!
JB wrote:
PP doesn't deliver abortion services as a method of family planning. They justify it as mental health services or some other bull@#$% technicality.
-
I see JB cannot provide the info requested and is now trying to divert and deflect. JB what you said is your opinion and doesn't amount to a hill of beans.
-
JB .. you have your facts wrong .. doesn't matter how much you spout your rhetoric .. it's still wrong. So step back from me and leave me alone.

All very mysterious, JB. If you do have proof, meaning something other than a story that somebody posted on an extremist right website, you should contact the HHS OIG and report your findings. If it isn't true, however....
Oh good grief, what an idiot that PP director is (if that story is indeed true)! There's certainly no need to demonize the anti-abortion crowd; the worst of them do it all by themselves.
-
yes, JB, if you have secret information that PP is doing such things you really ought to report it. Dating back to the Civil War Times, there are provisions in the US code that allow whistleblowers to collect a percentage of the recovery where a whistleblower leads the government to fraud. Just think of the free health clinic you could start to replace PP!
Or just hush.....
-
Hmmm....looks like that was Linda Meek, director of Reproductive Services? I don't believe that's a PP facility. She's still an idiot.
-
Well I find a story but as far as I can determine it's not about Planned Parenthood. It's about the director of Reproductive Services abortion center:
I don't see this place listed under the Oklahoma branches of Planned Parenthood:
http://www.plannedparenthood.org/health-center/findCenter.asp?s=OK&p=0&o=1&c=0
Either way I'll agree that it was a horrible thing to do, but I fail to see what that has to do with the current conversation. I will admit there are idiots on both sides of the issue.
-
Well I guess JB wouldn't get a very good mark on her homework.
-
Oh I get it! Some people will say anything to make their point. S-T-R-E-T-C-H the truth so it sounds good. To the gullible it usually makes perfect sense.
Going to put on my aluminum cap.....so many conspiracy theories and not enough Preparation H.
-
JB
Would you please give us information on how PP and Reproductive services are related? Thank you.
-
You're welcome Cindy .. just as an FYI .. Bill Clinton signed the BCCS program into law while he was in office.
