    Before 1921, it was pretty difficult to "sneak" into this country.  People came by ship, and were not allowed off the ship (or off the island in the case of Ellis Island) until they "proved" that they were healthy, had enough money to start a life here, and had a place to stay (frequently with a relative).  Now if many of those immigrants told the officials some tall tales, that is minor in comparison to what happens today.

    It was not easy to forge documents the way that computers can today.  Anyone who wanted to come to this country for economic opportunity didn't have access to cars or other motorized vehicles to travel large distances overland easily.

    We didn't have planeloads of people coming and going on an hourly basis in every medium sized or larger city in this country to help newcomers blend into the crowd.  We didn't have tourist visas or work visas that expired leaving would be immigrants here without papers.  If they qualified to come, they qualified to stay because the trip back to where they came from was considered dangerous.

    Pregnant women certainly didn't intentionally embark on a trip to this country that could take months hoping to give birth to an anchor baby who would then be the hook that would let the rest of the family stay too.  They were too concerned about having mother and baby survive the birth to knowingly risk having it happen at sea or on foot in the middle of the desert.

    Anyway, folks, I see a cardiologist tomorrow for what could be news of a THIRD comorbidity. If I don't get to report how it goes, you will know why - and we will all be left wondering, but why?

    There is huge injustice going on. BCO is in a position to at least address it in a small way. Meanwhile, a majority is left feeling unsafe and vulnerable. It has gotten to where I cringe whenever someone posts a picture of themselves and their families. People have been stalked on this site after being involved in the liberal end of things (and for other reasons too, no doubt). I took out my city of residence. I just don't feel safe revealing any identifying information.

    My father came over in the very early 1900's and his ship did not come through New York.  He landed in the South and stayed there all his life.  From what I know he did have certain processing he had to go through and a certain amount of money and proof that he either had a sponsor here or a way to make a living.  Just seemed like not just anyone at that time could hop on a ship and become a US citizen.  He never had any education so could not read or write but as long as he could learn the language and show he had a way to make a living, he was allowed to become a citizen.  Everything seemed to be on the up and up in those days and rules were followed.  That's all I would like to see now.  Some control over what is going on with the immigrants flooding into our country.   Sorry some people are taking this the wrong way.  No one wants to harm any one.  Just set up some controls and restrictions so that people can once again become citizens the "right" way.

    Athena-I totally agree with you on your speculation about the deletions. When certain people get all foamy, the deletions start to happen. It may or may not be anyone who actually posts on this thread .And you're absolutely right-it's the liberal posters that are getting deleted. Are people so insecure in their political beliefs that they have to delete others who don't agree with them?

    Athena:  I do hope everything goes well for you with the cardiology problem.  I can see no reason why you would be banned.  I have asked for Melissa's help in stopping these problems for us and banning innocent people is not my idea of resolving the problem.  I care deeply about the ladies of this group, including you, and enjoy so much sharing my posts with you.  However, if Melissa allows the troublemakers to keep disturbing our thread, I feel I will no longer want to be a part of this much longer.  I will find another discussion group where I can be free to have different discussions with people and not have to be concerned about my posts or the posts of my friends being deleted and banned.  I am tired of losing my friends to bullies who have nothing better to do than hound this thread.  The deleter is probably one of our own using another ID to hide behind.  Well guess where I am going to be posting next and you get a bag of peanuts if you can figure our "my" new ID.  Medigal may have to give up the ghost and assume another ID on a new thread but not in bco.  I do hope they will welcome me there as you all have made me feel so welcome and happy here!  Has anyone ever heard of one of the names of the Seven Dwarfs called "Sneaky"?  If not, there should be.  It would go well with whomever the deleter is.  Good night ladies.  Tomorrow will tell us what is to be.

    Medigal, I think a better name would be "Sleezy" for those deleters. I've never felt the need to report anyone for any reason. I thought that was one of "our" rules. If you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen.

    On a brighter note, I spent the day at the doctor's offices today. My surgeon said see ya in a year. The mamogram people said see ya in a year. My onc evidently likes me more so he still wants his copay in 6 months.  All in all it was a good day.

    BarbaraA, so glad to hear things are looking up. Keeping the good wishes flowing your and your brother's way.

    Hmmm. If I got to pick what I wanted to see gone from the Constitution, it would have to be that crazy line in the 2nd amendment about a 'well regulated militia."

    Play this game. Go back up to one of the illegal means illegal rants, and substitute "guns" for "illegals"--wow, it's all the same!! My hatred for guns and their hatred for some people.

    The 14th has been grossly taken advantage of. I am very confident that it will be repealed. We are working very hard to pressure our reps to vote in favor of a repeal.

    Laura - do you have any statistics to indicate how many people come to the US solely to have children who will become American citizens? How could those people be separated from those who go to the US for economic opportunities that, at least in part, are possible because of the many employers who ignore immigration status?

    Are you expecting the whole 14 amendment to be repeal or just parts of it? If just parts, which ones? and what would replace those? For example, if you or your children have a child in the US would they no longer be automatically eligible for US citizenship? Who would decide which parents are going to be allowed to have children who become citizens?

    Re. Cdn citizenship language requirements:

    The citizenship knowledge test and your interaction with CIC (Citizenship and Immigration) staff will be used to assess if you have an adequate ability to communicate in either English or French. CIC staff will observe

    your ability to understand basic spoken statements and questions, and

    your ability to communicate basic information or respond to questions.

    For example, as part of your interaction with departmental staff or as part of your written test or your interview with a citizenship judge, you will be expected to:

    answer simple questions on familiar topics, using short sentences;

    show that you know enough words for basic everyday communication;

    tell a simple story about everyday activities;

    speak about something you did in the past (or will do in the future);

    give simple everyday instructions and directions; and

    express satisfaction or dissatisfaction.

    Edit:  I forgot to mention that although there are these language requirements, Canada does promote multiculturalism.  See http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/multiculturalism/citizenship.asp if you're interested in more info.  Probably not...

    Some people have facts. Other people have report this post. There is an old saying," When you can't dazzle them with brilliance baffle them with bs." Apparently now the last part of that saying is "Report this post". There are many people at all points of the political spectrum whom I respect for their ability to carry on a good political discussion ...and then there are people who report posts because they disagree with them. Freedom of Speech is a tool to be used in the free exchange of ideas.

    Thanks for the big smile I have on my face right now Annette! She and my mom would enjoy each other! I'm glad that there are some people on here that are not right wing reactionaries! I try to be openminded but immigration is a complicated subject with real people involved - escaping tyrrany or unsafe living conditions (like in Mexico) much like our forefathers and ancestors - why can't we understand why they come here............,

    Had my post against hate speech deleted in the last thread, so thought maybe the "report this post" police would hit my anti-racism/xenophobic immigration post, but I was pleased to see they left that alone.  I still think they need to change the programming so that the names are public on who reported a post and caused it to be deleted, especially when nothing about the post violated any rules.  I don't know what 3monstmamma posted, but I would really like to know what rule it violated.  If the MO holds true, it didn't violate any rule, she just had an opinion that differed from the speech police.

    Athena, I truly hope you get good news today, it really sounds like you have had more than your share of stuff to deal with lately.

    Barbara, I hope your brother continues to improve.

    More snow expected here today, getting very tired of it.  It's probably warmer in Alberta!

    {{{ATHENA}}}} Good luck today!

    Thanks for the good wishes. Bro is doing better according to the nurse. I will head over at 10 and check it out. Of course, this morning I get a call from the hospital financial office. He is basically indigent (lives with Mom) so I told them that. She said he would be eligible for a program that will cover the bill because he makes less than $500 per week. She also assured me that I would not be responsible (nor would my mother...right...she is on Social Security retirement only) for the bill. I knew that but enjoyed hearing her say that. So the upshot is, my bro will be in the ICU for 6 days, on a unit for another 5 and will owe zero. I know some people have been denied service but I have not experienced that personally.

    The problem is that those without insurance who have no means to pay are covered by various social programs.  Those of us with poor insurance would be left owing thousands and no means to pay after paying for our mortgages, gas, food, etc.  I am still paying on an MRI I had in 2009.  Took all of our savings and my husband's 401k to pay off my medical debt from diagnosis and treatment and the first few years followup care.  Too many of us fall betweent the cracks of our medical system.  Emergency rooms are not required to give you screening mammograms and basic oncology care, and even if they did, I would still be billed and getting collection calls.

    I am very happy though that your brother is being taken care of, and that you will not be financially impacted.

    The USA and CANADA are the only developed nations who STILL grant birthright citizenship to children of illegal aliens.

    Australia repealed 2007
    New Zealand repealed 2006
    Ireland repealed 2005
    France repealed 1993
    India repealed 1987
    United Kingdom repealed 1983
    Portugal repealed 1981

    No European countries offer birthright citizenship. Japan doesn't and neither does Korea. Just the US and Canada. Everybody else who did have it at one time repealed it because they realized the staggering burden it created for their countries.
