No Meece we aren't making fun of you, we're translating your rain amounts to potential snow amounts!  The default conversion is 1 inch of rain = 3 inches of snow.  Of course, dry powdery snow has more snow per rain inch, and heavy wet snow can be nearly one to one, but who wants to let facts interfere with our fun?

Let's see, 0.06 inch of rain would give me 0.18 inch of snow.  Barely a dusting.  It's sunny right now, but we're supposed to get 1-2 inches later today.  For Meece that would be 0.33 to 0.66 inches of rain!

NM, that's why when we get even an inch of rain in the winter (which we often do) I tell myself   that where I grew up (eastern Washington) I'ld be shoveling it.

suzwes - awwww your DGD is so cute in her cold winter gear.  She does look a little perplexed -maybe she is wondering how she will walk in all that bulky clothing.  What do people do about taking babies out in that sort of weather?

Over here most of the North Island has had rain or heavy drizzle for 3 days now and no let up for another few days it seems - hoping it will be fine by Christmas.  Two of our neighbouring regions had been declared in drought and things were pretty dry for us too - think that will be lifted after this rain.  Still quite warm though as the weather is from the North or North East.

Finished work for the year yesterday - wohoo - holidays!!!  School goes back Feb 3 I think.

Joni - I work in a primary school (children aged 5-13 y/o) and this is our long summer holiday which is why it will be a bit strange to you.  We have 4 x 10 week terms starting early Feb and we have just finished for the summer holidays.  We have two weeks between each of the terms and 6 weeks now.  All of my girls will be at university next year and they don't start til 1 March and finish mid Nov.  They have two semesters with three two weeks breaks scattered through the year.  How long are your summer holidays? and your school terms or do you call them semesters at the lower levels?

It rained all through the morning and out at the graveside.  We have driven about 4 hours and it just now became dry weather.  We are still over 3 hours away from home and there we are supposed to have storms through Wednesday.

We drove home from Utah in a light rain until DH said I could take over.  Then it turned into a downpour.  Especially when we hit a mountain pass where the snowplows have popped the reflectors off the road, and the lines were near non-existant.  After tweo hours of white-knuckly driving we made it home.  I checked my rain guage and we got a record rain for today, 1.02"  Sometime between Friday morning and this morning there was an additional .20".

    So glad to be home.

It's called quarters here in Medford, OR, Rae,  & the kids are out from mid-June to around Sept 6 or so depending on when Labor Day falls. But it varies throughout the states & within the states sometimes. Personally, I wish school was year-round with a break every now and then, but no one tell DD I said that!

Here in Maine we have a "school year" for K thu 12, starts in September usually, occasionally in late August, depending on when Labor Day falls, and ends in June.  The exact end date depends on how many snow days we have (days school is canceled due to weather).  I forget the number of days the kids have to be in school each school year.  There is a break during the holidays, usually a week or two, various holidays off.  The universities have Fall, Spring and Summer Semesters.  The Fall and Spring semesters are the primary "school year."  Fall Semester startes in August or September and runs through December, ending shortly before Christmas.  "Christmas Break" also called "Semester Break" is anywhere from just before Christmas to just after the New Year to a month long.  Spring Semester starts sometime in January and runs through May.  Primary Commencement is in May.  Summer term runs from May through August and has fewer classes offered. We also have Spring Break-- a week off in March.  My campus also has a "Winter Break" which is a week off in February.

Currently 9 degrees outside.  Nice and brisk.  Clear at the moment.  Gotta check the weather geusser's report and see if the Nor'Easter they were getting work up about last week is actually going to materialize tomorrow as predicted.  Should be interesting.

Hi All,  I'm from the norther suburbs of Buffalo New York.  We have a balmy 22 degrees, more snow on the way (only 1-2 inches) with a wind chill of 11. HIgh temp today may reach high 20's. This is usually normal weather in Jan/Feb. I think it's snowed everyday in December.  I'm glad we live north of the city, southtowns already have several feet of snow. Just watching the European snow storm, the weather looks crazy.  I keep thinking when the crocus start to poke through the snow, I'll be finished with my treatment:)  Need to finish wrapping and cookies, Merry Xmas all:)  Stay warm and dry.

Hi Lindenbeach girl!!  Welcome to the site. I'm relatively new too (Nov 10) so I need to watch number of posts per day.  FYI,  there is a rule you can only post 5 times a day when new, so I'm careful with my allotment.  There is a Private Message which has unlimited use if you reach your allotment feel free to PM me.  I know Ontario got a lot of snow, I was watching the mess on the 400 (or 401?) where they airlifted stranded motorists.  Where is global warming when you need it LOL??  I've seen quite a few people from the surrounding area, we should plan to meet sometime (in the summer).  Talk soon

We have had an additional 1.1" of rain since we went to sleep last night, and it is pouring right now.  Our anual rainfall, as I have mentioned before is maybe 6-7".  Our year starts at the end of June.  So far my little electronic rain guage has us at 4.09"

Our school starts around the first week of August.  We have two weeks off at Christmas and one week off at Easter.  Since we rarely have one snow day, school is out by the end of May.

whoops the picture turned out a little large. No oinly is it cold outside I have been freezing inside. Where are the hot flashes A week till Christmas and I am sad this year. My DDs are doing most of my shopping. Not because I am any worse but because my DH has had a heart attack and spent 10 days in the hospital. I am grateful that he is still with us but he is so frail. When we get morbid we place bets who will go first (we also have a 17 1/2 year old cat). All in all we are luckiy though. Retired, in our own home. looked after by family and the health services. Many have it a lot worse. Seasons greetings to everybody. May you celebrate your holidays with good cheer.

Season's greetings to you Marybell.  Your picture makes me shiver.  Our home is 70 degrees right now, but my toes are cold and that makes me cold all over.  we have had another 1.3" since my last post.  We headed to church and our street looked a bit flooded, but when we came home 2 of the 3 ways to get to our street have been closed by the city and the houses at the corner have water going past the sidewalks.  I was nervous about driving through the "flood", our location just isn't cut out for this.  My new rain total: 5.39".

Meece I heard on the news this morning that CA was getting lots of rain.  do you live in an area that you have to worry about mudslides?

23 degrees, grey and gloomy, got that "snow is coming" smell that I love so much!  Remains to be see if we get dumped on or just another typical winter snowfall.

I hadn't thought of mudslides with all the rain on the west coast--I hope you don't have to worry about that, Meece!

My home is not in a direct mudslide area, but the catch basins which are required in each new housing and construction area are all filled, and the streets are backing up.  I might have mentioned that the water is up on the lawns just a couple of houses away.  We are slightly up hill and I doubt it will affect us other than not being able to drive through.  OUr back yard, still unlandscaped is a muddy mess.  We saw a new overpass they are building nearby which has been undercut by the runoff and it may cause serious problems in the completion of the project.

As of this moment we have have 4.75 inches of rain since Friday morning.  So much for the La Nina effect.  Our total rainfall this season is 6.22".  That is our normal for the entire year, and we still have 7 months to go.

I need to go replace a panel in my greenhouse but I don't want to get soggy.  What to do,what to do.

When we were coming through the pass Saturday night the snow plows were out scooping mud and rocks off the highway.

Up to 25 degrees, still cloudy and gloomy, no snow yet.  I've gotten to the "start already" stage.  I can't imagine snowplows clearing mud--that must be a sight to see!

immarybell - when I saw your picture I laughed - it just said it all.  I am in summer with temps of 75 during the day and 66 overnight and the humidity is high.  Have had rain or heavy drizzle for the last 6 days now but the skies have finally cleared today with more rain/heavy drizzle forecast for Wed, Thurs and Fri.  Fingers crossed it will clear for Christmas day.  Sorry to hear your DH is struggling after his heart attack but I love your sense of humour about whether you, he or the cat will go first - humour keeps us going I reckon.

Meece -  heck, you need rain but did it all have to come at once???!!!! glad to hear you are home safe, hope it is short lived, doesn't cause too much damage and that your house remains safe.  We have had about 5.4 inches in the last week but we are used to around 50 inches per year so not unusual for us.

NM - has it started yet?? you sound like me - I can smell rain coming and it is such a relief when it finally hits.  Gosh, are you required to teach all three semesters?  You don't get much time off then.  NZ is small and all schools whether private or state are subject to the same school requirements, holidays etc so it seems strange to me that across USA there are different rules for different regions.  Our unis have a summer semester but it runs for only about 6 weeks from middle of Nov to just before Christmas. It is for students wanting to catch up on prerequisite courses or redoing missed papers - quite intensive I believe.  Received today an 'offer of study' email from the uni my youngest DD is going to next year so now there is only accommodation to sort out and she's all set, phew.

On the news I saw that our city got 6+" this storm.  We are supposed to have a short break tonight.  They are giving out sandbags today.  I had such a tough time trying to get home today.  They are so many streets closed.
