Thanks, suz.  i think we are finished with the bad stuff.  Now the crews just need to go through and repair all the roads that are torn up because of water undercutting them, or road crews purposely tearing them up to divert the raging water.

I hope everyone back east stays safe, indoors and warm....9" is a lot of snow for NC...NM....hope you get to snuggle all day tomorrow.....weather forecast predicts snow for Denver on Friday...we'll see...the snow in the mountains has stopped....my kids had a great time skiing....my 12 year old skied till the lifts closed each day.....3 days in a row...she is a pretty good little skier....and she doesn't mind skiing by herself....the other day when I went up I took to the mountains for the night, I stopped at the ski area...I saw DD at 3:45 and said she didn't have time to do another run and she looked at me, pointed to the lift line and said there was time and off she went.....I'm going to have to make an effort to take her skiing a few times this year....the best local place is only an hour away if traffic isn't bad!!!!

State offices are closed tomorrow in anticipation of the weather, as is the local school system. State police have "please do not travel" messages out for tomorrow.  I've already called my freind to say we're not going tomorrow.  We were going to make a combination of jab-in-the-butt and girls day out tomorrow.  We'll just do it later in the week.  So unless there is a miracle between now and 7 am, no driving for this girl.  With 50 mph wind gusts predicted, I'm assuming I'll lose power at some point, and have all those arrangements made and ready to go.  Maybe being ready means it won't happen!

To all my East coast friends, stay warm and safe.  I was watching the weather channel and it sure looks nasty.  They are in Philadelphia, Boston, Mass, VA.  Some of the areas look really bad and being from Buffalo, that's saying something  LOL.  Seriously, be careful, snow has a sneaky way of getting really bad, really fast.  I see all the US AIR flights are cancelled.  It's a Christmas gift that DH is home this week, not traveling to DE for business.  He can take me to chemo in the AM.

Meece:  How is the flooding?  Glad you had a safe journey and holiday.

Maureen, I live in Batavia N.Y., and was invited to vacation in N.Carolina.  Western N.Y. has all clear, down to pavement, streets and Carolina is getting a taste of our weather.  I'm glad I stayed put.  Lvtwoqlt, you experienced yesterday what we do here, leaving early due to weather, i hope you don't get more than 6 inches, I know from having lived in Va. for 11 years, it can just bury a city, since Buffalo and surounding areas have a ton of plows, salt trucks and the like.  We are due for a heat wave, 40 degrees, later this week.  Karen

DS & DIL are in Indianapolis and were supposed to fly home this afternoon.  he had me watching the internet for changes in thier flight.  About an hour prior to the flight, they delayed it.  They didn't actually cancel the flight until two hours late.  They tried to get another flight, any flight west with no luck.  The next available that they were able to book was tomorrow night at 8:00.  Hopefully the weather will clear and they will make that flight.

The weather has been dry all day and the next storm not due until Wednesday.  We got just less than 1/2 inch in this storm, so we are doing alright.  We are jsut about at 7.5" for the rain season.  About 1" over our normal average annual rainfall.

Looking forward to an improving new year.  Looks like I will be heading to hawaii in a few weeks to be with DS as he has a procedure done to his heart.

Suzette, I will let him know about your offer for a meal in the Lansing area. The snow stopped in my area early Sunday morning but then the high winds started up so now we have drifting snow. Saturday my son and I couldn't get my car or his truck up to the top of the driveway so we parked half way up. Yesterday when the temps got barely above freezing and the snow was starting to melt slightly we had to move cars around so my husband could leave this morning since his car was at the top of the driveway. If we couldn't get his car out the other option was for me to drive him to his truck 50 miles away this morning. After we got the cars moved the temps dropped, my sister called from TN and said she wasn't coming home until today and could I go walk her dog. We left and went to her house 5 miles away and walked her dogs, by the time we got back home the driveway had frozen back over and my hubby could get his car half way up the driveway.  He left at 7:00 am this morning and he just called me and some of the roads had drifting snow that had turned to ice. Glad I'm not driving.

Wow!  That sounds like quite an ordeal, Sheila!  I guess I can handle the heat we have here.  At least you don't get stuck in your driveway because of an increase in temps, or slide off a road, or lose visibilty.  (That's doesn't mean you won't hear me complain when it hits 110.)

Makes me glad that I don't have a driveway on a hill, Sheila!  The blizzard is hear, full force, with lots of wind and blowing, very fine but very heavy snow.  Got to get out and get the first shoveling done before it melts enough to start freezing.  Going to be an interesting day!

When I bought the house (23 years ago) I didn't think about getting in and out of the driveway. The name of my street is Hilltop Street and I have the highest house on my end of the street. I have a 6 ft high bank at the front of my property to the street and my house is on a small knoll above the bank. The driveway is cut through the bank to the side of the house, about 100 ft long. It is just a gravel drive so we can't really scrape it to get rid of the snow and since it has a bank on both sides, the snow drifts into the driveway. It would take a tremendous amount of ice melt to get the driveway cleared.  I don't have troubles getting up the driveway except when it snows and we normally get 1 or 2 heavy snow falls every couple of years that keep me out of the drive.  Today is cold and windy, the sun is shining just hope more of the snow melts.

WoW, the weather is sure frightful.

Karen, Batavia receives a lot more snow than our area...hell Cheektowaga gets more snow than we do.  I'm on the north side of east amherst, very close to lockport (7miles) so when Northern Erie Co. gets snow, we're sure to get the brunt of that snow.

Meece: Here's hoping your relatives get in safe and sound.  My DH travels A LOT for business so I'm very sensitive to airport issues. He's spent his share of nights in an airport. I remember we had a really bad ice storm in 2008 (I think) and called him on the cell to get to a hotel ASAP cause he wasn't getting home. Turns out he drove from Georgia cause he couldn't get a flight in here for days!! Spend most of my time on the computer, did he take off, did he land etc...?

NativeMainer: Storm sounds like a doozy, here's hoping you keep power. We lost power one year for 7 days and invested in a generator the following year. The fireplace saved us from really freezing and it took us 3 months after the storm to get the generator.

Shelia,  your home sounds beautiful!!  If you only have to worry once or twice a year, I'd be okay with that.  Sounds like your truck has 4-wheel drive (good thing for snow, bad for ice) Here's hoping for melting snow.

Maureen the truck I was referring to was my husbands home away from home, his Peterbuilt semi. He is a long haul trucker, gone for a week at a time. I drive a 2002 Ford Focus and he drives a 98 Ford Crown Victoria. My focus goes pretty good in the snow, I have found that if I back up the driveway I can go better but try to get my husband to believe that is another thing.

Tonight we have temps in the 20's but the sky is clear. My hubby made it up to Northwestern Ohio.

I get confused wtih the all the state abbreviations you ladies use - I must Google a simple USA/Canada map with the states and abbreviations and have it handy.

Been hot and humid lately but we have a storm today with high winds - not as bad as they predicted here but I have a DD away at a music festival in a small tent and they were predicting 50 miles/hr winds in that region - hope it is less than they predicted there too.  Fine again tomorrow and until after New Years day - yay.

Just had a phone call from DD at the music festival - wind is bad and their two gazebos have been blown down but her tent is holding up well.  She was unwell when she left on Sunday and strep throat was going around her work and I was worried she could have been getting that but although she is very croaky she is feeling ok, just a cold with a bit of laryngitis it seems. Yelling at the music and talking non stop with friends is probably not helping either - can relax a bit now.

I hate wind too - all that static electricity in the air puts me on edge.  Storm and the wind has gone completely here - nice day predicted tomorrow.    Hope the storm is not too bad Meece.

They are expecting more flooding, but it could be focused south of me.  I hope.  But like I said, we have pumps in place righ now to prevent the build up of rain water in the streets right now.  We should be ready just in case.

Power never even bumped, for which I am thankful.  Today the temp is 14 with a good brisk wind, wind chills under zero.  Gonna be a cold one.  Now as long as power doesn't go out today, I'll be in good shape, got freinds coming over for dinner.

It's 11:15 am here and we're up to 21 degrees.  Tomorrow it is supposed to be above freezing and up to 47 degrees by Friday.  Woo Hoo!  Maybe some of the ice on my road and in the driveway will melt!

suzwes--if you sprinkle salt--plain old table salt--over the ice you want to melt today or early tomorrow you'll be surprised how much will melt even when the temp isn't above freezing, just as long as the sun is out!

I wish I could NM, the driveway is very long and the parking are very large and caked thickly with ice (DH put salt on some of it) but the darn sun is so far south that it doesn't reach the area of the driveway where we need it most (where we park!).  That's IF the sun comes out, in fact now that I think of it, we haven't had a sunny day in quite a while.  I know #itch, #itch, #itch!  Thanks for the tip though.

I sure wish I did.  Should have thought about that when we decided where to build the house!!!  On the other hand, the front of the house with all of the windows faces south and my old kitty and doggy love to lay in the sun in front of the windows (when we actually have winter sun!).

I have a new term (at least new to me) that was used on the weather report by a meteorologist today.  We are to be aware of "Road Ponding" not flooding, ponding.  Geesh!

Heat wave tomorrow.  Might go up to 30, 47 the day after, can summer be on its way.  It truly helps to be sarcastic if you live in WNY.  Karen
