The rain that we were supposed to get beginning Tuesday never showed up.  Another storm is supposed to come in the next 30 hours.  I guess we'll see.  I hope the weekend isn't rainy.

Up to 10 degrees at 9:30 this morning and some nice sunshine.  We're supposed to get to 34 degrees.  Yippee!  I think we're going to miss the big midwest storm tomorrow - it's supposed to stay south of us.  Again, Yippee!

In Northern Virginia they are predicting 12 inches of snow on Saturday!!!!!!!!!!  We have had about 8-10 iches of snow so far.  I am sick of it - my poor sister has to do the back-breaking shoveling.

As for skunks, I guess they're really pretty in pictures taken from a GREAT distance!

Kathleen, we had about 3 inches and they say between 12 and 25 inches are coming, depending on the drift of the storm.   Thank goodness I am in an apartment and can watch the comedy show when the snow removal crew arrives.

Time to get ready to go see my new grand daughter who arrived via emergency C section early this morning.   My first grand babe.  I am grandma, hear me roar !!!!!

in Va you are getting the snow, they are predicting ice here, we are too close to the front dividing the frigid temps from the cool temps.

congrats Nancy on the grandbaby, right now I am 'adopted' grandmother to two children who's father spent more time during high school at my house with my son than he did at his father's house.

We got 7 inches last week and now they're calling for one to two feet. It sure is pretty but I'm a wimp when it comes to driving in the stuff. As long as it doesn't keep me from getting on that plane next week to spend some time with my little Valentine. Nothing will ever be the same now that you are a grandmother, Nancy! This is my grandson, 18 months. He lives in Boston. Way too far away . . .

Nancy, congratulations on the new grandbaby.  Anna, your grandson is adorable.  It is wonderful to be a Grandma.  I have three lovely grands - they're 4,2 and 18 months.  Sooo fun.

I'm so sorry for you ladies who don't typically get much snow, seems like you all have been pounded this year.  We usually have quite a bit of snow and we haven't had much at all (knock wood) - I'm sure it's being saved for us so we can be pounded with snow in March and April.

Stay warm and shoveled out or if you're Sheila, stay salted - hope the ice isn't so bad it knocks the power out!

Congrats, Nancy.  I hope Mommy and Baby are doing well.  Adorable boy, Anna!

DH has a grandson but SD rarely lets us see him, only if she wants something.  They only live 15 miles away.  So we don't really have Grandkids to enjoy.  DS and DIL have been trying more than a year with no luck.  I wish I had a grandbaby to cuddle and spoil.  DH and I volunteer at the church nursery so I can get my "fix".

I went to the grocery store last night ... OMG, by the sheer number of people and the lines, you would think we are going to be snowed in for weeks.  Almost no bread or eggs.  When we had that last 12-18 inches earlier roads got plowed and salted ... everyting was fine.  I understand that Virginia is out of money for snow removal.  I say get a loan and keep the salt coming!  I say "enough already."

Anna ... what a cutie patootie your grandson is - he looks to be a happy baby!

Nancy ... I know earlier  you said you were from Pittsburgh.  I lived in Pittsburgh twice.  Both times it was for career opportunities.  Loved it; however, the first time I drove to Pittsburgh, you know that tunnel inside of the mountain you go through to get to Pittsburgh?  When I came out the other side it was snowing - great big fat flakes of snow.  It was April 15!  I distinctly remember thinking this was not a good omen!

The second time I went to Pittsburgh they had just had one hellacious snow storm.

If it weren't for the cold - I'd retire there.

mumayan--I was just thinking the same thing.  I live in a "snow belt" section of the state, and still don't really have all that much snow.  I'm actually getting a bit worried--I don't want to be dealing with major snow storms all spring!

7 degrees, just enough breeze to make the smoke from the chimneys lean a bit.  Gonna be a good day to hang out laundry!

kathleen, Pittsburgh is my home town, born there, moved when I was 10, then back again when I was 17.  I lived in the same house for 36 years, with DH and our only son.  After that many years, many friends had passed, as well as DH,  or went away to other cities, so it was time for me to gather myself up and move closer to our son.   It was a good move and now we welcome baby Olivia, my first grand babe, born yesterday at 4:15 am.

The late season snows are no fun at all.  How many Easter Sundays were cold, snowy, and no way could one wear that outfit. I will be hunkering down for a day or two as the snow begins later and they say will just keep on and on.   It is very cloudy now and I expect not to see the sun shining in the windows for a while.   Hugs for all, keep warm, Nancy

I came home from work yesterday and worked a couple of hours in the yard.  Gettign thingd ready for Spring.  I had some plants that the tops die during the winter but I leave them on to protact from frost.  With the chance of frost waning, I trimmed all of the brown off them. Today is garbage pick up day and I wanted to top of the garbage can so I won't fill it up over the weekend.  or at least I can fill it up again then.

The rain is supposed to arrive this morning.

I agree, Kathleen, there was quite a party atmosphere at the grocery store last night. I live in Leesburg, and we are saturated with supermarkets, but taking my elderly father grocery shopping yesterday I noticed all the parking lots were full and there were no carts at the Harris Teeter he likes. And this was at 5 p.m. We joked about it and wondered if it could all be a conspiracy; since there are too many stores and none of them are ever full, maybe they got together and bribed the weather forecasters to get us all to come in? Unfortunately, it looks like that's not the case; the snow has already hit southern Virginia and is on its way . . .

I am actually kind of excited. My hubs gave me a new sewing machine and I am planning to play play play for the next few days. I'm a quilter and have two wedding quilts to make for this summer. Let's hope the power stays on. Our little dog is only 8 inches tall. She's starting to get used to doing her business in a little shoveled patch I keep free for her right outside our back door, but she told me it's getting old.

Congratulations, Nancy! What a pretty name! You are so lucky to be close to your son and his family. I sure hope we get the snow out of here by the 13th so I can get on my flight to visit my daughter and her family.

Anna, What type of machine did you get?  I really want to get back to sewing.  I have been doing alterations for my future DIL, She's one of those sickening thin girls (like I was many, many years ago).  Clothes seen to hang on her, so I work at giving them some shape.

I got up this morning to 3+ inches of snow and since 5:45 the snow has turned to sleet/freezing rain. I did manage to slide into work (1/2 mile drive) but I don't know how long I am going to stay. The weather is not going to get any better as the day goes on according to which weatherman you trust Wink. We are at the bottom edge of the snow that Nancy, Anna, and kathleen are expecting.

Anna, I am jealous about the new machine. I got a new portable 3 yrs ago for Christmas. I am working on a Bible cover for my Father's birthday on the 17th. I made a sample out of upholstery scraps for my Bible to test my pattern and when I showed it at church the woman over the craft bazaar wants me to make some for that project. She even gave me some upholstery scraps in a solid brown brushed twill and a cheetah print (for outside pockets). I think I have enough fabric to make 4 or 5. The main expense will be the zippers.

I never thought about making my own!  That's cool.  I bought a Husqvarna machine a couple of years ago with my tax return.  I love it.  I actually have 8 machines around. Two antique Singers, my grandmother's white, DH's aunts and three modern ones which I have nearly worn out, and the one I use.  I have a hard time getting rid of them, they are like members of the family!

I got a Pfaff Quilters Expression 4.0. I love Pfaffs. My old machine is a Pfaff Tiptronic 6270 that had a short, but they don't make that machine anymore. Boy, did I love that machine. I took it to Wilson's in Hagerstown and they fiddled with it and said that Pfaff no longer made the parts, so it "had no future." I could have traded it in and gotten a little off the new machine, but I decided to keep it. The funny thing is that their fiddling seems to have fixed it, so I now have two machines! One without a future, of course. But still, a member of the family!

Hmmmmm, I wish clothes would just "hang" on me!

Getting back to the weather: my new owner's class on the new Pfaff is next Tuesday. Hagerstown is 50 miles from here. I sure hope I get to go!

Sure would love to see a picture of your bible covers, Sheila.

I have two Singer Featherlights and another old Singer from my mom. I got my daughter hooked on sewing by buying her a Featherlight to put in her bookbindery. She wanted it for show but it turned into a treasured workhorse.

    Isn't playing with fabric awesome?

My mom still sews on a treadle singer (or is it a White?) machine. She swears by that machine. She also has a Singer Featherweight that she takes to quilter classes. I think she also has the cabinet machine that belonged to her mother-in-law and another cabinet machine that was her mother's she uses that one for button holes (she isn't sewing machine poor). I learned to sew when I was in the 2nd or 3rd grade. I spent several weeks that summer with my grandparents and my grandmother set me at her treadle singer machine sewing together rag dolls and clothes for it. My machine isn't anything fancy, just a portable Kenmore, the one I had before was an older cabinet machine I got at a yard sale for 20.

The Bible cover I am making, I looked at the one my dad has carried for several years (the handles are falling apart) to get the style (handles up each side opposite spine and pockets on both sides running length of Bible), measured the one my husband has (handle on the spine pocket on one side running across front), used those measurements to cut main body, and guessed on the handle length and pocket depth, had a long zipper at my house, and sewed my first one up out of the upholstery scraps - no out of pocket expense, to see if it fit my Bible. It did fit, but if it didnt' I could adjust my measurements and construction (added decobond interfacing on cover and spine pieces for stability) for the next one and then cut into the nice faux suede my sister had at her house (she used to work at West Point Stevens in the sample room and has a nice fabric stash and a variety of zippers). I actually have my dad's finished but can't wait to start with the other fabrics.

Well, if you look at the weather I reported this entire week then I can just say ditto!  same ol' same ol' and I'm not complaining as it makes travel so much easier.

I am very envious of the sewing talent on this thread.  I can't even correctly sew a button on anything.  Cooking is not my specialty either, in fact, I think I got a C in home ec when I was in middle school.  Now I must admit I'm a heck of a nurse, a decent wife and a terrific Grandma but that's it for my talentLaughing

Suzette, be proud of what you can do, I can't stand the sight of a needle or blood. As you can tell, I grew up in a sewing/craft talented family. The thing is my great-grandmother like you could barely sew on a button but her daughter (my grandmother) looked at a picture and made a dress without a pattern when she was in her teens (so the story goes). My sister makes bridal and prom gowns and tells the girls to look at the bridal books and pick out elements that they like from the pictures (bodice, sleeve, skirt, back) and she pulls together a very individual designed gown for these girls. I also worked in the upholstery factory for about 10 yrs sewing upholstery covers for several major furniture companies. When sewing there, I would get pieces and figure out how they needed to go together without written instructions. I used some of that knowledge (sewing cushions) to make the Bible covers.

I knew Featherlight didn't sound right! Featherweight!

My grandmother was a knitter and crocheter; my mother was trained as a milliner and she could sew anything. I went to school in Germany and we had to sew and cook in Home Ec. I hated it and hated anything to do with sewing. Then my daughter came along and I made her some little dresses and liked that. Remember the blizzard of '96? That's when I started quilting. I had just received my first Pfaff and had taken some quilting books out of the library. We lived way out on a dirt road and I was snowed in for a whole week. Still live on a dirt road, but no longer way out. We don't see plows here. My poor hubby rides an ATV with a plow attached and does our long driveway. He does the neighbor's as well. She's alone. One shouldn't have to worry about these things in Virginia. I thought we lived in The South!

Yes I do quilt as well. I usually do wall hangings, not large quilt size quilts. The wall hangings are quicker to do an satisify my need for quick results. Although my local quilt guild did a year long 'mystery' quilt challenge (2008). We were given instructions on fabrics and amounts to gather in chapter one, Chapter 2 started with the cutting instructions for each fabric, chapter 3 started the sewing instructions, and so on and so forth. We didn't know what the final quilt top would look like until we finished it at the end of the year. The top itself was full size but I used stash fabrics (extra amounts than required) and was able to create several borders of various widths to make it large enough to hang over the top of my queen size bed. I usually hand quilt but it took me so long to get it pieced, I want it done quickly and I don't have the space for a quilt frame for something that large, I am allowing a member of the guild to machine quilt it for me, I just haven't gotten it to her yet. I used some colors that I don't normally pick (greens) that went along with my focus fabric (purple and pink paisley with green accent) and it is a very colorful quilt.

It's so nice that quilting is still an art passed down or still being learned in todays world.  Such a part of everyone's heritage.  I treasure the quilts my Great Grandmothers made!  I have a couple I want to take in and have fixed and preserved.

I do love to quilt but I prefer the hand quilting to the machine quilting for my wall hangings. I have some vintage hankies that belonged to my great-aunt and I am planning on hand appliqueing them into a wall hanging.

I learned to sew at a very early age.  I made my first outfit to wear to school in 1st or 2nd grade.

I made two wedding dresses for DIL.  Long story.  That was fun.  The wedding was 1940s themed.
