Hollyann, can you just copy the page so you don't have to tear your book?  You are so sweet and kind to everyone and you know we appreciate you.

EWB I have the log cabin pattern for a quilt but it does look hard to me but of course I am new at it.  I need to get back to work on my first quilted wall hanging.  Have been too busy trying to learn to crochet and I have a feeling it just isn't coming.  I love to knit though.

What kind of stuff does the oblong knigy knitter make?  I have seen them at hobby lobby and they don't cost very much.  If I remember right they are a bright colored plastic and each size makes different stuff.

My next project for myself is a copper colored hat, I just love the thread and will post a pic when it gets done.  (as if I don't post a picture of everything!lol)

    Good night all.

C- the trick with the doilies is to crochet tighter than with the big hooks. if you crochet too loose with the steel hooks, you don't get as much definition with the small thread as you do with the yarns. Unfortunately I have always crocheted tight so it wasn't much of a transition for me. And about starting to quilt. I would start with a small project (wall hanging or table runner) and look for magazines with easy quilt techinques. One magazine I like is 'Quick Quilts' I think it comes out about 8 or 10 times a year. There are quite a few easy quilt ideas that are easy to do and quick to complete from the table runners/wall hangings to full size quilts.

I learned to crochet from my left handed mother who learned from her right handed mother. I sat opposite of her and what ever she did with her left hand I copied with my right hand. She uses the same crochet directions that I use but she just crochets from right to left and I crochet from left to right.

The log cabin quilt pattern isn't really that hard you just have to make sure that you get your colors in the right place and put them together in the right order. My quilt guild had a one day workshop on the 'quickest quick step quilt' several months ago and that was a quilt as you go, all done on the machine. The first one took longer but once you got the idea down it is very quick. The overall design is a random design, no precise piecing or quilting, and it is reversible. I made one in 2 or 3 evenings for a co-worker whose wife was expecting a baby and he was really impressed with the quilt he showed it around the office. Here is the link to the quickest quick step patten. The local quilt/sewing machine shop lady brought the patterns to our workshop and offered them for sale at the price on this site. http://batiks.com/cgi-bin/Store/store.cgi?cart_id=5716855.15005.s0&product=cotton_dreams_patterns&productid=Quickest_Quick_Step_Pattern&sales=0&lastmenu=submenu-5300.html

Thank all of you ladies for the great tips! You all are very helpful! Do any of you work with the fancy yarns like fun furs.  I crocheted a great scarf and did not realize that it was in the basket of laundry. Yep, I washed it and it is matted now. I am wondering if anyone knows how to unmat it??

    Lefty,

If you can work with the long Knifty Knitter, the round ones will be a cinch. I have made loads of hats to match my crocheted scarves.  I have to watch myself with any of them to keep from dropping a stitch. I have gotten lots of compliments on my scarves and hats.  I have the oblong yellow knifty knitter. After I finish my niece's afghan, I will attempt a scarf using it.

    EWB & Lv2qult,

Thanks for the ideas. I am thinking of handpiecing the quilt. I may have to break down and use the machine. It depends on my hands.  I like the idea of the Quick Quilts. I really do not feel comfortable taking on a large full size quilt for my first attempt.

I am looking forward to trying it this winter. I am hoping that I will have made enough scarves and hats to last a lifetime. LOL!

     Spar,

The round knifty knitters make great hats, cowls for the winter, hoods, etc. The large ones can even make skirts for the younger set. My niece loves the cowls and the skirts. The oblong ones will make scarves. I am not sure of what else they make. There are lots of patterns out there. I think the smallest round ones will make things like cell phone holders.

    Lucy,

You are a dear! You are so generous and compassionate. I have read lots of your posts. I crocheted a couple of the open mesh shopping bags and a couple of purses, not sure that anyone else would like them but I find them useful.

If I can figure out the easiest way to get pix with my webcam, I will post some pix of my crafts.

Thansk again to all of you ladies!

C, would love to see the mesh shopping bags and purses.  Did you make the afghan on the oblong knifty knitter?  Does it come out oblong?

Hope all has a good night.

Shelia I got the neck coolers today, thank you so much.  My SIL really likes his, he works at a petroleum plant that is hot inside.  You did a good job.

I promise that hand sewing (or even machine sewing) a quilt does not have to be hard. Just need to be realistic w/ the pattern you choose. I had my 1st grade brownies hand sewing pieces together as they made 2 quilts to be donated. I will try to find the picture I took of them.

C- I also have issues w/ my hands and have found hand sewing not a problem. I do a few pieces and then rest...great for sitting in the afternoon, waiting for dr appointments, TV in the evening.

Sheila is right- many quilting guildes and quilting shops offer workshops and classes. It is well worth attending one--you learn a lot about quilting in general and loads of tips/tricks and often go home w/names and #s to call if you run into a snag.

I was fortunate enough that my grandmother set me down at her treadle sewing maching when I was going into the 4th grade and I sewed together scraps to make a rag doll and clothes for it. I was active in the 4-H sewing club from 6th-9th grade and won several ribbons for my clothing projects. I would say that I started getting interested in quilting about 15 yrs ago but did help my grandmother before then with some of her quilting projects. My mom and sis-in-law became active in the Hickory quilt guild about 10 yrs ago and when my husband started driving long haul truck I found the Hudson guild and really got more involved with quilting. For me I started my hand quilting with 'cheater cloth' wall hangings. They are pre-printed panels (45x36) that I sandwiched with my backing and batting, basted together under my mom's guidance and started hand quilting. You can tell on my first one, my stitches wern't even where I started but as I went along, my stitches became nice and even. Then as I finished them I bind them with a pocket to put a curtain rod in to hang them in my office. The one I have finished hand quilting but need the binding, is made from paper-pieced blocks for Easter. The blocks were machine pieced but the all the quilting is by hand and the binding will be done on the machine. I am currently working on vintage Dresden Plate blocks given to me by my sister-in-law that was sewn together with crochet cotton thread. I am re-sewing them by hand and pulling out the crochet cotton. After I get them re-sewn, I am going to applique them on some 1940's white feed sack fabric and then quilt it using cotton batting and white feedsack on the back to make it as original as I possibly can. I keep a quilting bag with my pocket book and take it with me when I am going to doctor's appointments or any place I will have a wait. Pulling it out makes the time go faster while I am waiting.

    Spar2,

I made the mesh shopping bags, purses and afghans all by crocheting. The only thing that I have made so far with the knifty knitters are hats on the round ones. I am still trying to figure out what to make with the oblong one. I will try to get pix posted.

    lov2quilt,

Thank you so much for the info. I am looking forward to trying some quilting this winter.

Right now, I have tons of yarn and requests for afghans, purses, scarves, and hats to fill.  All from family! LOL I am hoping to get enough scraps to make some squares for the hugaghans (sp?).

    Love2quilt,

My sister sews a lot and loves her treadle machine. She moved away 40 yrs ago when she married and we are not as close as I would like. She tats, crochets, and sews. Unfortunately, I didn't have the Home Ec classes that she had. I opted for college prep courses. They came in handy, but I think I missed out on a lot by having to teach myself.

I have some vintage hand pieced quilt "blocks"  that I have wanted to piece together to make a small lap quilt. I do not know the pattern names. One set is, I think a flower pattern. the pieces are octagonals that are pieced together with one color inside for the center and then outer layers like petals? maybe. Anyway, the "blocks are all irregular shapes due to the octagonal pieces. I have about 20? i think. I have one vintage quilt that I am trying to restore. I restored two other quilts that had holes or worn out sections. Then I have a few very simple blocks that are square in shape.Unfortunately, the fat quarters that I bought are a more modern pattern and are not "in keeping" with the vintage look of the "blocks" that I have. I need to take one with me and do some more shopping I guess. But I want "a plan of attack" first.

I used to haunt flea markets, yard sales, and estate sales for anything that looked like an interesting project to finish. Now I finally have the time to do something with them. I really need to do something since my house has become a cluttered mess. LOL I am truly ashamed to have someone come in my house. Disability doesn't help. I keep saying, "one day...." LOL

Have you seen this bra purse:

    http://www.sewing.org/html/bra_purse.html

Suggestions are fill with potpourri (? spelling).   I am thinking a tote bag, using several pieced together.

C - the block you described with the octogons is called 'grandmothers flower garden'. Those can be appliqued onto muslin blocks and put into the quilt. By putting it on the muslin, you won't lose the design of the 'flower' if put on a printed fabric block. Muslin is either bleached (white) or unbleached (natural color) and not that expensive to purchase. The other blocks that you are restoring, when you go to the fabric store ask about the reproduction 1930's - 1940's fabric section. Those prints are designs from the 1930-1940's some of them were feedsack designs. By using the prints from the reproduction section, you should find something that will keep the project 'look' original.

About home ec classes, one teacher I had in High School, I knew more about sewing than she did.

    Nancy,

I love those purses but it looks like you would need HUGE bras! LOL

    Sheila,

Thanks so much for all of the information about quilting! I thought that pattern was called flower garden or something like that.  I will have toa sk my niece about the fabric. She works for Joanne Fabrics.  She found me some nice fabrics for some 1880's praire outfits that I was making.

Did I tell y'all I love costuming, too. I have all kinds of costumes!

    Lucy,

I think we could work out some kind of deal. I would need to know what type of purse you might want. I am still trying to figure out how to get a picture on my computer so that I can post it.  Maybe we can get together sometime and compare notes since we are just a few hours apart.

    Arnie,

    Love that wreath!

    Happy crafting to all,

    Connie

Hi ladies.  I had a bad night last night and stumbled on this thread in the Spiritual forum and spent most of the night reading from the beginning.  You are all so talented and inspiring.  The crafts are simply fabulous.

I am quite frustrated right now.  I've been working on a crochet baby afghan and got through one skein and half the blanket and started on the new skein and even though the colors match, the first skein was fuzzy and soft and the new skein has a silk, shiny texture.  I bought these at the same store at the same time and they both have the same lot number.  I'm so frustrated that all that work has been wasted and now I have to start over.  :)

    Lucy,

What colors do you like? I have one started in yellows and oranges, a variegated yarn. That one I should be able to finish up quickly. But if you have a different color in mind that is OK. Like alot of us, I have all kinds of yarn in many colors.

This is the start of what I call a sorry shawl or scarf.  It is for Cherneski.  Each color represents a different mood or feeling and I also owe her an apology.  When it is finished it will have a lot more colors added.

Have missed you all so much, keep on crafting ladies.

Glad to see you back SPAR. I have been working on my art bras. The guidlines I set up stated that they were to be finished and taken to the wig bank by Sept 1 so I could get the order of the show layed out but neither of mine are finished yet Embarassed. I am hoping to get them finished by next week, I can always work on them Labor day while I am home from work.

What do they do with the art bras?  Is there a contest at the wig band?  For some reason I thought they were just for fun at pinkstock 2009.  I do so want to get to go in 2010.  Are all those wonderful bras going to be in a show?  I have so many projects going at the same time that I feel overwhelmed, my daughter keeps telling me to slow down and just do one thing at a time but sometimes the mood is for knitting, sometimes quilting, sometimes making jewelry so that is hard to do.  Also have been reading a lot.

lvtwoqlt, I am so thankful to be back, you all  were so missed. Will we get to see pictures of your art bras?  I think I would like to try to make one.  A real sleazy one.  LOL

Hopeing to see more wood art by arnie2two when she is feeling better.  I am missing alwayshope very much.  Wish she would pop in with a hello.

My grandson ended up loving his pillow, he thought it was so cool.

Hollyann, missing you, what do you have going on now?  Did you see that baby blanket on the other craft site?  I though of you when I saw that,  I just love my doves, I smile everytime I walk past and see them.

Well, have got to get busy as DH will be expecting a roast, potates, carrots and all the trimmings. will be back later.

    Everyone have a great day.
