Vivre, remember even Obama was sworn in as Barack Hussein Obama. I find nothing wrong with his name. Obviously he did and so did the MSM. But now it's okay?
If anyone read anything about him they'd have know he went to Muslim schools when he was younger. There's even more info if only one reads.
I think he's rushing things along like closng Gitmo when no one has any idea what they're going to do with these men known as terrorists. People seem to forget this is not the "normal" enemy we would think of fighting. These men hate our way of life. They hate our religion, alternative lifestyles, our capitalistic way of governing, our freedoms...everything about us. I feel like some of the things he's signing is to appease some of his "followers." Like he's keeping his promises. Instead he's making a mess of things without thinking first. We'll just hold onto our hat and see where things lead.

I want to post a link about AlaskaDeb. It's on Gina's website. She is saying that it wasn't the cancer that took Deb. You can read the rest.

Shirley I LOVE that.........thanks for sharing.............Shokk

Misty the Lab and I have been out on the sheet of glass that is our street. She thinks bounding over the crust great fun!
The snow and ice remind me our Alaska Deb and how sad I am. I have tried not to think about the malpractice.......it is so discouraging and scary. Thank you, Shirley, for the link to that then-hopeful article....and aloha!
Vivre, Pittsburgh is actually a lovely town, with lively neighborhoods, a beautful downtown filled with stately buildings and college campuses and old mansions, including the Frick Estate.
Re Gitmo, why not free them into Communist Cuba? Surely everyone would be happy???
DH cracked up watching my tape of Blago on The View. Elisabeth wasn't there, so the rest of them were all cutesy-pie, with Blago patting Joy's knee.
Anyone notice how all the TV ads are tying into "Yes, we can", and Hope and Change? MSM and CNN running ads of their unparalleled coverage of the campaign and inauguration? Maybe it will all be inspirational to those so new to volunteerism and community service!
Nice to see new names and faces~~~where HAVE you been?

Shirley...that You Tube is awesome...now if only, well you get my drift!

I absolutely do not mind. Indeed, I think your statement could be misread and might not reflect your views but could stir up some trouble you never intended. Please just keep my name out of it, though.
Thank you for sharing your views with me, I appreciate your openness.

I hate to say this because it stirs people up but I am anti-abortion...in saying that I don't want to see anyone's rights taken away who is pro-abortion...I guess what I am saying I feel abortion is wrong but if you feel it is right then I support your right to have an abortion. Partial birth abortion in my mind is murder.
What I meant when I said "now if only...well you get my drift", I meant if only the abortion issue could be more along conservative lines...because when abortion occurs I really do have to wonder what that child would have grown up to be...and I realize that may sound dumb to some who are pro abortion but it is what I feel when a baby's life is taken.
It just occurred to me that some may have read something into my statement other than what I meant. And I get why you are asking. For your peace of mind, I am not that crass. But thanks for asking before making a big deal out of it. Would you mind if I posted this p.m. as an edit to my statement on the board?

Hi. I was wondering what you meant when you thanked Shirley for posting the You Tube link:

On Gitmo closing in a year, to me that is a no brainer, it probably would have happened anyway. There is time to figure out what to do with the remaining prisoners, making the closing date a year in advance was a smooth move on BO'S part, politics at its finest! Give the people what they want, make it look as though something is happening, hit the ground running! Very smooth move. But as I said, no doubt in my mind the Reps would have done the same.
The stim package, I hope the Reps keep tearing it apart, give Pelosi another reason for another face lift, literally and figuratively!

Did anybody else hear that the stimulus/aka new debt package includes building a water park in Florida? Talk about pork! Why would the feds build/fund that?
-
Rocky what's wrong with a water park in Florida?............I mean heaven knows they need more water............it's not like they have enough water parks and beaches there..........the poor Floridans really, really, really need a new water park.......now see........this is why Republicans are such mean spirited heartless windbags..........and are all ugly (well except for the women)........they question the necessity of things like water parks..........jeez.............Shokk

Well, it looks like Obama economic team does plan to do some "right" things too. They appear getting close to creating a "bad bank" to absorb toxic assets from the banks. It is similar to what was done for S&L crisis in 80s with RT (Resolution Trust). They tried to do this with TARP money in the fall but could not determine the price of bad assets i.e. is it 30c on a dollar of 50c . Apparently they are getting close to establishing this value now. Once the government "bad bank" will get the toxic assets frmo the private banks, they will be in better shape to lend money out. Menawhile the "bad bank' will hold the assets till the economy improves and sell them later.
The market was waiting for this for sometime so hopefully it will start going up. It is more important that the bailout package in my opinion.
Meanwhile the tech companies earnings continue beating expectations with their earnings without any stimilus,

What do you girls think about Phil Berg's lawsuit - regarding the birth cert issue?
-
i'm curious to know what happened to working across the isle? the dems won't even listen to any suggestions the repubs make re the stimulus package. my, isn't that bipartisan. they have been completely closed out. this is the danger of a congress and white house being controlled by the same party. there is NO BALANCE OF POWER!
-
Well, I haven't seen the lawsuit but I think this is a waste of taxpayer money! This kind of wastefulness gets me so mad... like when Ken Starr went after Bill "where's my pants?" Clinton.
His mother was a US citizen .. he was born from her, naturally, not adopted, etc. I don't care if he was born in Timbuktu .. he is automatically a citizen in my book. If I was travelling abroad and living abroad for a time, and got pg, I think my kids are entitled to automatically be citizens.
But I think they have shown the birth cert .. the birth announcement in the Hawaiian newspaper and he went to a school in Hawaii that only allows native born state citizens (as opposed to native "ethnic" Hawaiians).
-
I think the creation of something similar to the Resolution Trust is a great idea. This way the crisis can be sorted out as to what is salvageable and what is not. It worked well for multi-family-housing communities that were in the same crisis back in the day.
-
I agree with Rock on the birth certificate issue...but even if you are born abroad of American parents it does not make you an automatic American citizen. My daughter was born in Germany and we had to file paperwork with the state department in order for her to be considered an American citizen.
-
I thought the birth certificate issue was dead. No? I never understood it anyway. A citizen of the USA gives birth anywhere in the world, and that baby can choose which country he/she wants to be a citizen of at age 18. They are presumed to be a citizen here because the mother is a citizen, unless the child doesn't want to be. Meanwhile there is no proof that Obama was born outside the USA anyway. It's all just innuendo. Unless someone knows something different, by being at his birth in Africa, which is doubtful, it's all a big nothing.
-
I don't have an opinion one way or the other...I was just curious about what you girls thought about it. Although...just fyi...the tax payers aren't funding this. It's all through private donations. The one thing I thought was weird is that his stepmother said he was born in Kenya, his sister said he was born at one hosp in Hawaii and BO said he was born at a different hosp in Hawaii...huh?
-
maria,
There is no balance of power now as the white hose and congress are controlled by Democrats. Personally I think that we should strive to have a balance, I wouldn't want to have all republican congress and white house either.. Checks and balances appeal to me.
-
Obama is now trying to sell the stimulus package. Sorry, but it is full of pork that doesn't create jobs. Too many billions will be spent foolishly again. They threw in every pork project that didn't get voted on in the last Congress.
These Senators and Congress people are not working for us, or our country by doing this. It is highly doubtful that as it's written today, with such large pork projects, it will create 3-4 million jobs as promised. More money will be needed as they again have to say ooops. No ooops this time, take the time and do it right.
I'm writing my Senators which doesn't do much because they already agree that this package could be the biggest boondoogle known to mankind.
-
Maria the Dems have no intentions of reaching across the isle........remember that was McCains deal........I don't ever recall "reaching across the isle" as being on Obama's platform............and if we Republicans don't wise up and quite trying to placate the Dems we are going to lose our conservative base........we need to stand up and not take this crap anymore and stop apologizing for being who we are........we are Republicans and many of us are Conservatives..........I don't want any of my Representatives reaching across any isle........my values and where my country leans has nothing to do with what is on the left side of that dang isle...........(sorry Maria but if I hear that "reaching across the isle" one more time I am going to have to stick a fork in my forehead to take the pain away from my ears")

The one thing I can promise about the stimulus package. Some people will get very rich. During the S&L crisis, the Resolution Trust took over the toxic loans, then after a while sold them. A friend of mind, was buying up loans from them at 3 cents on the dollar. He dealt with the ones in Houston. Most all the loans were either secured or were by companies that had real estate. He then negotiated with the original debtors to clear their property for anywhere from 20 to 50 percent of value. He then took the balance of the bad debt and turned them over to new collection companies that sprang up solely to harass the debtors that was left and shared on a 50/50 basis. In a little over 6 months, he made over 10 million dollars. Before Gary got into that business, he was a gold broker, he sold bars and coins and had a ton of Political clients, that dealt in cash for gold. That is how he was able to become an approved RTC buyer.
So believe me when I say, this share the wealth stimulus plan will make a very few well placed people very rich.
-
Mr. Spouse you are right.(I bet you don't hear that from Mrs. Spouse too much.....ha).......anyway when Obama is talking about share the wealth stimuli's package that is just a code to our congress people that yeah they will share the wealth among themselves........they get to live by their own personal rules in the capital hill bubble and then they get to make the rules the rest of us in the country live by.............and for some reason its us that gets scr**ed............Shokk
-
This is too huge a project for haste. There are real projects and there are ways outside of government hiring, to create jobs. It's done by lowering taxes and business will figure it out how to use it, or if we don't trust them, give a tax incentive to those who hire. It's an easy fix that creates jobs everywhere.
If the democrats will allow input from the repubs, and be willing to really look at the projects, where will jobs be created and how many, and get rid of the unnecessary junk, they just might be able to kick start us, but only with tax incentives to business. It won't happen without them.
-
Why don't they wait on the economic stimulus package and see if the "toxic bank" works first. I agree with you IBC - a few will get very rich from this.
Our governor is talking about how important it is for us to get some of this "stimulus" money. Then our local paper exposed how people are scamming the system. Wisconsin is a progressive state (and we have the high taxes to prove it!). The state will pay for childcare for those who are coming off welfare (this is a great idea really) BUT some people are playing the system. You need three people to pull this scam off. Person A for example says they have five children and is employing person B to take care of them while Person A works for Person C. However, Person A really doesn't have five children, doesn't really work for Person C and does not employ Person B. Come to find out the state has been paying Person B over $38,000 a year for "taking care" of non-existant children. Persons A and B split the "take" with a little for Person C whose only role in this is initially to provide a check so Person A can "prove" they have a job. The paper uncovered people working for non-existant businesses! The state says they do not have the manpower to check up on everyone. In the above case Person A worked for a lawncare service - billed for 48 hours a week - worked holidays and all winter and it was all second-shift!
Then the City of Milwaukee passed an ordinance in November requiring businesses to pay all employees sick days. Well guess what - businesses are leaving Milwaukee right and left. Then they raised business property taxes - the joke around here now is the last business to leave Milwaukee turn out the lights.
My dh is an economics professor and according to him the economy will recover without a "stimulus". The "toxic bank" is a good idea because it will allow the banks to clear their books and lend again - which is a big reason why the economy is nosediving. I e-mailed my congressman yesterday - he and I are on the same page though. My senators are another story - both Dems. I am hoping Feingold will try to get rid of the pork - I was happy he did not vote for Treasury secretary Tax Cheat Geithner.
My fear is PBO is such a smooth talker that he will tell you one thing and turn around and do another and the only thing anyone will remember is what he said - not what he does! He signed all those orders this past week to placate the Obamabots. Whether Gitmo is closed in a year remains to be seen. Where is he going to put these people? The MSM is FINALLY reporting that many who were released have gone back to their old ways.
Sherri - I hope that the Republicans get some backbone and vote NO too! Doubt it will happen - think some of them have drank the Kool-Aid - really think PBO would be a good salesman - probably could talk anyone into buying anything. You can tell he is not sure if this is the right thing to do - that is why he wants the republicans to sign on - so that the Dems won't be to blame when it fails. I would be happy if they could just get rid of every thing in that bill that is not either a tax break or something that would actually employ people.

Vivre, you asked about BHO's Arab interview, read my new favorite columnist ...
President Barack Obama is being praised for choosing an Arabic TV network for his first formal television interview: the Dubai-based, Saudi-owned Al-Arabiya news channel. I think we can all appreciate the thinking behind such bold outreach, given that the media at home has chortled to the world that our new guy's unusual background, in sort of Zen-fashion, has befuddled the radical Islamic movement.
The subtext of our satisfaction has been that Obama - African-American, son of a Muslim father, erstwhile resident of Muslim Indochina, with Hussein as his middle name - makes it far harder for the Arab Islamic world to typecast America unfairly as the Great Satan than would be true in the case of an evangelical, Texas-drawling, hard-core conservative Chief Executive like good ‘ole boy George Bush.
True enough, no doubt.
But triangulation is a touchy art and it takes the genius of a Dick Morris cum soulless Bill Clinton to pull off such disingenuousness. In less experienced hands it can be explosive and turn on its user. And Obama will soon learn the dangerous game he is playing. Consider:
1) When abroad it is not wise to criticize your own country and praise the antithetical world view of another - especially if yours is a democratic republic and the alternative is a theocratic monarchy that has a less than liberal record on human rights, treatment of women and homosexuals, and tolerance for religious plurality.
But here's what Obama said:... All too often the United States starts by dictating...in the past on some of these issues...and we don't always know all the factors that are involved. So let's listen...Well, here's what I think is important. Look at the proposal that was put forth by King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia...I might not agree with every aspect of the proposal, but it took great courage...to put forward something that is as significant as that. I think that there are ideas across the region of how we might pursue peace.
The end, if unintended, result is that the Saudi King comes across as courageous, while the U.S. President and State Department (e.g., "the United States") are portrayed as dictatorial-like ("dictating") in the region.
2) An unspoken rule of American statesmanship is not to be overtly partisan abroad. And in Obama's case it is high time to arrest the campaign mode, cease the implied "Bush did it" (which ipso facto has a short shelf life), and begin dealing with the world as it is, rather than the world you feel was unfairly presented to you by someone more blameworthy in the past. But again consider:
But if you look at the track record, as you say, America was not born as a colonial power, and that the same respect and partnership that America had with the Muslim world as recently as 20 or 30 years ago, there's no reason why we can't restore that. And that I think is going to be an important task... And so what we want to do is to listen, set aside some of the preconceptions that have existed and have built up over the last several years. And I think if we do that, then there's a possibility at least of achieving some breakthroughs... but I think that what you'll see is somebody who is listening, who is respectful, and who is trying to promote the interests not just of the United States, but also ordinary people who right now are suffering from poverty and a lack of opportunity. I want to make sure that I'm speaking to them, as well.
Perhaps. But once again, the impression comes across as ‘past America bad'/‘present and future America good.' (Even the senior George Bush learned that lesson at home with his serial "kinder, gentler nation" [e.g., kinder than what?]). And nothing is offered here (other than our lack of a colonial past) about the actual impressive record: amazing American good will in saving Kuwait, objecting to the Kuwaiti deportations of thousands of Palestinians, speaking out against Russia on behalf of the Chechens, trying to save the Somalis, bombing a Christian European Serbia to save the Kosovar and Bosnian Muslims, helping the Afghans against the Soviets, removing the Taliban and Saddam Hussein and trying to invest a $1 trillion in fostering democracy in their places, billions in disease relief for black (and often Muslim) Africa, timely help to the Muslim victims of the tsunami, and liberal immigration laws that welcome in millions of Arabs and/or Muslims. I could go on but you get the picture left out that America, far better than China, Russia, or Europe, has been quite friendly to the Muslim world.
Instead the supposition is that somehow the culpability is largely ours - and therefore ours to rectify. In fact, the widespread hatred in the Islamic world, manifested, and sometime applauded, on September 11, was largely a result of the failures of indigenous autocracy - whether in the past Pan-Arabist, Baathist, theocratic and Islamic, Nasserite, or pro-Soviet statism.

This is for you Sherri:
-
The whole idea of rebuilding the good will of the United States in the Muslim world after the Bush disaster irritates the H^ll out of me. I still say the second worst act of radical Muslim terrorism ever, was the assassination of a family member of a former President, a former Attorney General, and the man who would have been President in just a few months of his death. Robert Kennedy was killed by a Palestinian because of US policy in the mid east. He was killed on US soil. This was in 1968, Bush was still a college kid at the time. The US embassy was invaded (the same as invading US soil) and the staff taken hostage in 1978. Carter was president and he had just betrayed the the pro American leader of that country so the radical fundamentalist could gain power. Carter was a man that not only would bend over to pick up the soap in front of anybody that hated the US abroad, he would provide the soap. There is also that nasty fact that the planning and initial implementation of 9/11 was under Clinton. This even though Arafat spent so much time in the Lincoln bedroom that he had to pay property taxes in DC.
So let President Hussain Obama kiss up to the muslin world, we can tell by history how much they respect what they see as weakness.
-
I think some of the Arab nations will see it as a peacemaking attempt but I don't think we needed to do this!! We have helped them and continue to be their main source of income (China is on our heels, though). Who else is dumb enough to pump $700,000,000,000 into their economy by buying oil? Did they fight for themselves and get rid of Saddam? Are they concerned about Iran and Afghanistan and doing their part for their Muslim brothers? Did they help us when Kuwait was invaded?
I do wish we could leave them alone, stop getting involved in their politics and stop buying their oil. I do not wish foreign aid to help them. I think they should spend their money on building their infrastructure ... why should we spend our money to re-build Iraq? They have billions and billions here in NY that they are not spending because we are paying to secure their nation.
Maybe, Americans had the word DUMMY on their forehead but it needs to wiped off, and then not put the word SAP on it .. cuz that's what it looks like to me!
-
Mr Spouse,
I usually agree with you but not on the Resolution Trust issue. I beleive you that some people got rich fast and exploited some of it. But it did do its job as far as the banks bailout. The banks moved on and the economy kept churning. I have more problems with the stimilus package full of pork projects.
So now I am in agreement with you only 99% of the time
-
So, do you guys think that the Kennedy Dynasty is done? That people have finally seen them for what they are? I am hoping that Princess Caroline realizes that you can't just be "entitled" ... that once you open your mouth, your words need to make sense. What's so funny to hear from some Dems is that "well she had no experience" .. and I go, "um, didn't you vote for the community leader/Senator who voted "present" ???
-
Saw on the fox news website
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has launched an online petition to express outrage at conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh for saying he wanted President Obama to "fail."
Wow they are really afraid of him now, aren't they ? And what happened to the freedom of speech.? I don't know why but the liberals have really tough time with this concept.
