"Old" is a relative term.  I know 2 women that went to Africa when they were in their 90's.  One rode an elephant!!!!!!!

Btw have you heard Obama's speech today . When he went off teleprompter he was not eloquent at all.  One thing you have to give to Bill Clinton, he was a smooth talker. Obama was stuttering and hmming and pausing all through the questions.

Oh Rosemary, we are beyond that with her ... we've x'd her off our best friend list!  She is too skinny, we have to tell her to go eat some bacon and some cake, maybe even with ice cream! 

I am so wanting to buy a new hat.  When we went skiing, my daughter and I left our hats on the couch and were playing ping pong at the Lodge.  We left without them and the next day when we went to the Lodge to find them, they were gone and noone turned them in to the office.  Rat snacks!

it is concurrent w Specifically when you speak of "government" stimulus you are really referring to the taxpayer stimulus. So if the taxpayer is in effect bailing out the entire private sector what will the payoff to the taxpayer when the economy turns around? Obviously lower unemployment but rest assured when the turnaround does happen the focus will once again change to "profit before all else" and the same old slogans and spin about creating wealth for all will reappear.

The fact is that the statistics clearly show that only a very small percentage of the population only gets richer and richer whereas the majority of the taxpayers DO NOT see any substantive long term benefits. We are seeing the proof of this statement right now. The premise of profit first is only sustained by the uber-rich and the uber-greedy, but because these two cohorts carry huge influence it has legs and manipulates our politicians/leaders. Remember outsourcing anyone...how has that worked out.

We are at a crossroads. If the taxpayer (middle class) is overwhelmingly paying the tab so the private sector can once again prosper/profit we must change from a short term, profit first, prospective to a sustainable profit prospective where greed is mitigated and contained. This is more in line with the European model of life...which stresses balance. Since we are seeing Europeans retiring earlier, with more money, and working less hours why are going down a different path...because North Americans are driven to consume from the moment of birth.

This is a bigger issue than just an economic stimulus package.

Summer, I think most of us here do understand the US constitution. We had to know it to get into high school. While there are many Americans who have long forgotten, or did not bother to learn it in the first place, I think most of us here were good students of history, or we would not have continued our passion for politics. I never had a history or government class that I did not ace, so I think I know how the US government works. However, that does not excuse me for voting for Jimmy Carter. He sold me on the same bill of goods that Obama is not selling. He promised us that his government projects would be our salvation. When we are young, we believe what weare told, as we age we have our experience to learn from. Well, those of us who lived through the Carter years remember how well he kept his promises. So excuse us for being skeptical.

You also blame Bush for the current deficit, after stating that the Prez does not run the country. I think you have been drinking the Obama koolaid up there. Obama is painting a very bleak picture because he knows he has no clue what he is doing, and if things get worse, he can continue to blame it on Bush. Since TRoosevelt, the sign in the oval office reads "the Buck stops here". That is why the president is blamed for everything, even though Congress holds the purse. He can veto anything he wants.

Bush has had more to deal with than any president in a long time. We had a terrorist attack that brought our economy back from possible disaster with his optimism and take charge attitute. WE have had a succession of weather disasters, which were all his fault as we know. And he has had a liberal press who has not given him any good press. They have twisted everything he has done. I agree that his biggest mistake was allowing the Congress to spend too much, but since the dems have been in power they have doubled the deficit and it is the dems who blocked Bush's and McCain's attempts to reign in Fannie and Freddie, which is how we got into this financial mess. Our economy sinking is strictly because of the housing market. The housing market fell simply because banks were forced, by Carter intitiatives that were grown under Clinton, to give homes to people who could not afford them. Fannie and Freddie were the gov. entities that funneled all this money. They were run and "owned" by dems. I still remember being turned down for a Fannie Mae loan in 1981 because we were white and had jobs. Interest rates were 15%. If we had been considered "low income" we would have been eligible. But since we both had worked our way through college, paid off our loans, saved for a down payment, and were both employed, we could not get a low interest loan. So I am really pissed that all these other people who are in debt, and have no jobs were able to get a loan! Now those of us who have always acted responsibly are paying for all those who worked the system.

Sorry if it offends you Summer, that we are not giving Barry a chance. He has not done or said anything that gives us any faith. He has no record of leadership because he has never led anything. He did not do anything for the people of Chicago or Illinois. The city and state are in dire staits because of all the spending by a liberal democratic government. All Barry knows is how to spend. Last week, when he said the government would be the answer, it scared the daylights out of me. Name ONE government program that works well. There is so much waste it is laughable. The government will spend $10 for  a 10 cent pencil. The last thing we need is bigger governement. Barry's sounds like he is leading us to socialism. I know that is very popular in other countries. They want us to be as miserable as they are. Well, I hate socialism!

Barry Hussein Obama is an arrogant crook, and in time all the kool aid drinkers will realize they made a big mistake by believing all this hope and change bull. I just hope he will not change our country into a socialist country that will never be the land of opportunity that our ancestors dreamed of and were able to come here and make a good life.  I am scared to death that Barry is going to kill the America dream and turn us into another country full of people who are totally dependent on the governement for everything.

I hope that he is a successful president. But it order to be, he will have to not do most of what he has promised. I do not thing the guy is smart enough to realize that. He is a typical bureaucrat. God help us all.

First of all, Obama wanted a stimulus package to sign on January 20, 2008!  Talk about "boondoggle" Rosemary!

I think China's just about too scared to lend us anymore money.  Hmmmm...wonder why....

Many of us baby boomers have sacrificed DEARLY, I would like to repeat that.  Man of us baby boomers have sacrificed DEARLY (now I'll finish the sentence) to put our children through the best schools so they would have opportunities that we didn't have.  And now we want them to make the same amount of money that a person who digs a ditch?  Don't thinks so.  We had no government help putting our children through school because we made too much money...HAHAHAHAHAHA...I didn't work outside the home (yeah, my choice..my priority..not priority to all women and that's okay) and on my dh's salary we made too much money?  That was the biggest joke ever!  And we got no Affirmative Action. 

So, now my children will have to pay for the sins of the government who has screwed up this entire economy...I blame them more than I blame Wall Street....I won't rant again about Freddie and Fannie.

I wished I had seen the interview of Barney...don't know if it was on GMA or one of those shows...Barney blamed the prez for the oversight of  the first $300 billion...the anchor said that Barney was on the committee (is it the financial committee?) and asked him if he was POWERLESS...Barney jumped up and said no, he wasn't powerless....that was only a clip and I didn't see the rest.  Sure wish I could find it on YouTube.  President Bush will be blamed for every thing that has happened.  Vivre has already named them all.

I hope Obama CAN help get this great country out of this mess.  If I wished him to fail I wouldn't love this country.  But, we'll sit back and wait, Summer.  Some of us just disagree with spending all this money and not really know exactly what it's going for..bicycle trails, museums....

The population of the U.S. is approximately 306, 000,000 so who will be working these 300, 000,000 jobs? And what kinds of jobs are they? If they are green jobs, who will be qualified for them? If people who are currently unemployed are not qualified for the green/infrastructure jobs, wll they be trained for them? Will people have to move in order to work these jobs? Will people who are currently "on the system" or on disability be required to work appropriate jobs in order to maintain their dole? 300,000,000 jobs is a lot of jobs, who will be in charge of these massive projects? Will the people in charge be like the current CEO'S, overpaid by salary and benefits?

Sorry, my mistake.  It's 3 million jobs, not 300 mil.  I was thinking of 3.5 and just put in zero's instead.  Shouldn't type before coffee.

They used to say "It's economy , stupid". When Clinton left he had a good luck to do so BEFORE  the bubble burst in 2001. Some of it was 9/11 but also there was Sillicon Valley , it was a HUGE bubble of dotcoms. Now Bush has a bad luck of leaving AFTER the bubble burst.  Another 6-9 months and that would have been on Obama's head.

Economic cycles are usually 7-8 years, Of course this time it looks pretty bad with all of things going wrong. And when we are tin the middle of the storm, it's scary. There will be a lot of books written about this analyzing it to death.

I do agree that we need a stimulus package but not sure what the longtime price will be for that. My daughter was participating in some  psych research in college where they studied instant vs. delayed gratification. They would offer you $10 today vs $100 in a year, a lot of people wanted $10 upfront. I wonder whether the stimulus package will be these $10. Perhaps if we can live through the pain and let the economy work it out , we would be better off in the long run. But on the other hand it is all scary and I want my $10 today.
