I have been buried in work for the past month so haven't been able to read or post much. I hope everyone had good holidays.

I was listening to the radio today and they were talking about the gas tax and the need to raise it. They made it sound like they needed to increase it because the price of gas has gone down. Isn't gas taxed per gallon - not on the dollar amount? People are just continuing to drive less and if they add more taxes - people will drive even less. This is the first year that I have seen people in my neighborhood riding their bicycles in 14 inches of snow!! They were also talking about the price of gasoline going back up to 3.00 dollars a gallon by summer. Do you think they will blame B.O. for that?

Shirley - what are the bad green gas foods?

    Ijl,

I like the way you say your CURRENTLY for Obama.  I guess that could change without notice?

My son has a theory about Obama's presidency which is:  everyone is soooo in love with the guy that people will have such trust they'll go out and spend away and thus all will be well with the recession. My reply wasn't so hopeful.  It doesn't work that way if you lose your job, but what the heck.

If gas prices go up this summer, somehow the dems will still be blaming Bush though he did everything he could to relax the holdups to drilling.  If we don't drill, we get what we deserve. We elected these guys who fall in line with their party leaders, and higher taxes at the pump, and higher prices is what we deserve.

We need to be "PRO" our President and our country, and loyal to our allies, within reason.

(That doesn't mean you have to buy plates or coins or....!!)

That doesn't mean that we cannot or should not question his or Congressional actions.

I started my career in Washington at NSA, and I can assure you that they are not wiretapping you or me. Now some people..... Seriously, ordinary citizens are not targeted; people "of interest" could be.

    Y'all have a nice day, y'hear?

    Rosemary,

You are right , I am CURRENTLY pro-Obama.I wasn't that thrilled with McCain to vegin with. I feel that it is sometimes better to have an actual Democrat in the White House who will be reaching to Republicans than have a RINO like McCain who would be pandering to the left.

Of all the dum azz things libs blame Bush for, starting a war so his oil buddies could make money is the most dum azz conspiracy theory of them all. The profit margin of oil companies is lower than most businesses. In fact the government makes more money taxing a gallon of gas, in most states, than the oil companies make on a gallon. Bush must really be a Godguy if he has been able to perform all those "miracles" he is attributed to. He caused a hurricane, a sunami, spies on us, causes the implosion of the twin towers and even manages to create the illusion that it was an airplane. How in the world will the ONE manage to fill such big shoes? All the smucks who voted for this idiot will soon find out what the people in Illinois know: the only thing certain about an Ilinois politician is that they are all crooked to the core and have conspired to protect each other. That is how they keep power. Rats do not squel on rats. Blago finally got caught and he may soon expose all the rest. The state is in dire straits because of the unthethered actions of democrats. Obama is every bit as guilty as the rest of the Chicago thugs. HE is protected by his fellow thugs and an adoring press who manipulated his rise to the throne. America has already gone into a sink after the empty promises of the do nothing demwit congress. When they have all the power, heaven help us. We will not longer have Godguy as president. We will have a puppet who has no idea what to do except read a teleprompter. Just as in Illinois, there will be so much infighting among the demwits that nothing will get done. Oblablah will have to referee, but since he has never organized or managed anything except collecting voters for acorn, he will fall flat on his face. Palin in 2012!!

Why aren't libs complaining that a dum azz blond like Cameron Diaz can make 3 million for spending a few hours reading lines for a cartoon like Shrek, but a business should not be able to make a profit? Let's point fingers at the way we are ripped off by Hollywood. Talk about a business that is a milking machine.

    Vivre,

Bush has made a lot of mistakes and not sending enough troops to Iraq was one bug one. And I still can't believe he pardoned a coyote but not border patrol agents. He is a good guy though and as much as he is disliked now, it's quite possible that the history will judge him differently 10 years from now.

As far as Obama goes I know that he came from Chicago and had to play their game and I am sure he is no boyscout. BUT just because he was striving for power and played the game right it does not mean he cannot be good for this country. So far he made a lot of good moves that I approve. Granted he is just starting so the worst may yet to come but for now I don't see anything that make me scream in frustration. So I am giving him a benefit of a doubt.

Besides if you don't like Democrats , wouldn't you want them to fight all the time so they will be too busy to inflict real damage? Wink I think there is going to be a lot of power struggle between him and Reid/Polosi that will keep it interesting.

All I gotta say is GOD HELP US!

Who's Godsgirl anyway.  Why just now show up and go straight to me cuz I said I'M SCARED OF THE DEMS...Pelosi and Barney are idiots.

I get so amused at all the "theories" out there about PRESIDENT Bush.  He is still PRESIDENT.  However, I think he's letting PE Obama have the presidency (almost) because PRESIDENT Bush has class and he wants PE Obama to KNOW ALL that is going on.  PRESIDENT Bush loves this country and wants the best..soooooo...PE Obama has center stage.  So, please dems, don't ask where PRESIDENT Bush is.  He's letting you guys gloat.

And, VIVRE, You are so right...darn that Bushguy....he can perform miracles by starting all kinds of things..storms...gas prices to rise...OH, BUT THE DEMS HAVE FORGOTTEN..I HAVEN'T..remember when PRESIDENT Bush lifted the oil ban..the gas prices started dropping IMMEDIATELY.  Go back, dems, and do some research.  Perhaps you'll remember.  I think we republicans need to get on the band wagon AGAIN about DRILL HERE, DRILL NOW!

Raising the gas tax in this economy is plum stupid.  I actually think the dems would like to see the gasoline reach at least $4.00 a gallon again so everyone would drive EVEN less.  What idiots!

First of all, I'm impressed that Cameron Diaz can read.  I can hardly go see a movie anymore without seeing the witless on the big screen who made those ridiculous tirades for Obama on utube.  I want to know who the writers were who wrote those tirades for them.

When I was in LA, I had the opportunity for talk with some young people who all voted for Obama.  So I took a shot and said well he was too old to be running.  I hit the nail on the head for them.  They have their doubts about Obama, but couldn't vote for such an old man.  One of them signed up to join the Navy.  My next question was doesn't it bother you that Obama has no experience with wars, but McCain has?    His age trumped all.  Issues weren't at the top of their thoughts.  Had a younger person ran, who knows what the outcome would have been?

Ilj, And I think that Obama will be pandering to his party more so then reaching out to republicans. We'll see soon enough.  It will be tested at the get go.  I hear that they have this fantastic $$$ number in mind to spend on projects to get the economy running.  No thought to how it all gets paid for.  I think it's another outrage that we won't know how our money is being spent because the bill supposedly will be on Obama's desk on the 20th for his signature.  I'm looking forward to the debate.

suzfive, what I remember watching cuz I get so stupid angry every time I hear more green gas stuff..heck..I probably put out green gases..LOL..Anyway, it's beef cuz the cows live long and I suppose fart a lot Surprised, Cheese cuz I guess it comes from milk, any foods that have to be flown because of the airplanes giving off those farts, chicken's not so bad..heck I can't remember all..and when food is dumped in the landfill...gas again..I wonder about beans that make one gassy?  So, whatever you buy from a farmer near you is probably fine cuz it doesn't take an airplane to get it to you..however, you do have to drive USUALLY to get your foods from a farmer so you are probably emitting those farts too.  (By the way, "fart" is not a bad word...it's part of our bodily function..well, I probably should have used the word "gas" but didn't want everyone to get confused between gas and green gas).

I'm just kinda tired of hearing what all PRESIDENT Bush has accomplished in his eight years of SERVICE (according to the demwits).  Yawn

    Rosemary,

As scary as the price tag for stimulus package sounds, the alternative is worse. A lot of respected economists who normally believe that the government should stay away from business say that there is no other choice now. I forgot who said it but we have a patient in ICU and cannot worry about possible SE of a drug that will save his life.

As far as McCain , he was NOT a true conservative. Remember him reaching to Hillary to work out on something(I forgot what) and standing on a stage together like best buddies , he did pander to the left A LOT. That's why a number of conservative journalists and talk radio hosts had such trouble supporting him. If Romney were to win a nomination, I might have felt differently. He probably would have been the best man for this job of cleaning up economy mess.

The economist do not know what to do either.  However, on the other side, many have said let the economy work itself out.  What's right and what's wrong?  I don't know, but I sure hope these billions, possibly trillion, dollars do a miracle.  I don't trust any of their solutions.  The repubs will probably be fighting this new stimulus package all the way.  I sure hope the repubs don't let bull$hit be added on..like...a child's museum...yada yada.  People are getting fed up!

Godsgal, if Shirley scares you, then we all here should scare you.  I dont know your age, but I remember very well when Jimmy Carter was president how high the gas prices went.  I can assure you, he had no investments in the oil companies.  The middle east controls the gas prices, and incase you have had you HEAD under a ROCK for the past 2 years, you would know that the gas prices double and trippled ALL OVER THE WORLD, but I guess George controlled that too huh?  I guess if he can make a hurricane hit where ever he commands, raising gas prices GLOBALLY is nothing for him to do.

Godsgal, perhaps you should consider changing your screen name.  I am sure that no "gal" of God would instigate a fight.  I KNOW that God is not happy with His "gal" for doing it either.  Just a thought........

ijl, I guess I would have more faith in oblahblah if he did not cut his teeth on the Chicago politcal machine, and if he at least a little experience, in ANYTHING. He is  just a big talker. Blago was smooth talker too. He was able to outspend his GOP rival, by millions and convinced people he was going to fight for them. Ha! What a crock that was. He presided over a state that had a high gnp and put it into the basement. Schools are underfunded but he promised a million dollars to a south side church that burned, convincing people it had historic value because MLK once spoke there! No one batted an eye. If Obama was such a great community organizer then tell what he has done for Chicago school kids? More young Americans died in Chicago this year than in all of Iraq. There is so much corruption on the Chicago public schools, the money never makes it to the students. Now they want to pay the students for getting good grades! What happened to personal responsibility. The downstate kids do not get paid for their A's. Illinois continues to tax and spend it residents. Businesses continue to move out to less taxed states. The democrats in power in DC will do the same. They will drive a stake into the heart of our bleeding economy and finish the job. I have no faith in this guy. I am scared to death of him and his cronies. Just as it took us decades to recover from the asinine tax and spend policies of Carter, we will have to do it again. The only time the government works is when there are checks and balances. When one party has all the pursestrings we get problems. My major criticism of Bush is that he did not reign in Congress. The reason we had a descent economy with Clinton was because they all had to compromise. The dems now have carte blanche. Hide your money under the mattress!

    Shirley,

How can the repubs fight the new stimulus package if they cut off debate?  That can happen easily.  I don't like hearing the package will be on his desk on the 20th.  It means there will be no debate and we're left with not knowing anything about those earmarks that will be in the package.  How many people out of work are capable of fixing roads, bridges, and the like?  Where's the oversight?  I'm keeping my C-SPAN on just to see if there is a debate.

The headline in the WSJ today is "Obama Eyes $300 Billion Tax Cut - Huge Breaks for Business, Individuals Are Aimed at Winning GOP Support for Stimulus"

"The largest piece of the overall tax relief would involve cuts for people who pay income taxes or who claim the earned income credit. It would serve as a down payment on the "Making Work Pay" proposal Mr. Obama outlined during the election campaign, providing a credit to offset Social Security and Medicare payroll taxes of $500 for individuals or $1000 for families"

"On the campaign trail, Mr.Obama said he would phase out a similar tax credit proposal at around $200,000 per household, but aides said they haven't settled on an income cap for the latest proposal".

The business part of the plan would give tax breaks to companies that had losses in 2008 and 2009 to reduce taxes retroactive five years. It would also give tax incentives to companies that hire workers or reverse lay offs.

Apparently this is part of the 700 to 800 billion figure. Guess he won't be raising taxes on businesses after all - at least not until the economy recovers.

As for the green gas stuff - that is fine during the growing season - what are we supposed to do in the winter? Guess I could learn to can.

    vivre,

I understand your concern completely. But there are precedences for "change". Gorbachev came up Communist Party ranks and was a  strong party man BUT you know what happened : he presided over the beginning of the end of the Communsit Party rule.

This is a long shot of course but not an impossible one. Especially  now that he inculded 300 Billion dollars tax cuts in his stimilus package. I just heard Larry Kudlow quitre a a conservative and skeptical guy over at CNBC saying that he felt a thrill down his spine when he heard about this tax cut plans. So I chose to be optimistic.

BTW, How many people out of work are capable of fixing roads, bridges, and the like?

It's not just people performing the manual labor, this is the equipment company like Caterpillar, computer comanies that provide support for design and manufacturing, mechanical and civil engineers, etc, etc

Where are you all hearing this info on what is in the package?  I want to read it for myself.  Is it at some gov't agency site?  If the WSJ has a write up about it, then we should have the entire package to read.

    Sherri,

I keep hearing different things coming from Obama's people or whoever speaks for him.  He won't be interfering with Bush's tax cuts right now.  Will they let them expire in 2011?  Or is it 2010?  I can't remember when they expire.  If they expire that will be the tax hike.

I don't know what is happening with Burris.  I'm listening to C-SPAN and not much is going on today in the Senate.  They aren't showing it.
