Positive Obama thread

I'm trying to catch up on the last few pages--wow. Lots of good "meat" in the comments! It's hard to remember what I read a few pages back, so if I miss congratulating anyone for their posts--all have been spot on, and I have been laughing so hard I can hardly read!! In fact, my little gray and white kitty is a little angry at me for disturbing her sleep on my lap!! And now I am writing, which means I put her down, but she won't take no for an answer, and is on the top of the back of the chair waiting for me to finish!
Felicia, thanks for sharing the Neuvo California laugh. We in California would really like to separate Northern and Southern CA into two states--south is historically red, and the upper half has always been blue--and on the Central Coast, mucho liberal--far left as we can get without falling into the ocean!
Nicki--love the pics you post. Keep it up. You make the thread much more colorful!
LA & Flyfans--you write spot on to those who come to ply their Repubican rant. Thanks.
Amy--my hubby's birthday is in 44, so I'm thinking that you might be right--44 may be a lucky number for the next 4 years, and of course, 4 more after that--see 44!!!!
And to all others on this positive thread--what a breath of fresh air--I love coming here and visiting with all of you.
Jaybird--since I'm on the west coast, I most likely will not have the funds to go to the inauguration, so visiting on line at that time--I'd be open to joining in. It will be another historic moment or moments to remember and cherish! See you then!
Isn't it nice to go to the news stations, and see the "first........" of everything Obama does? I feel like there is a blank canvas of this country, and we can paint it the way it should be, not how it's been for the last 8 years. It's all so new and fresh, intelligent and wise! Hurrah for brains--will be glad when the dunce leaves office. Can't come soon enough!
And Amy, I am taking your advice. Won't be visiting the repub thread--hoping they'll get "bored" with no one to argue with, and maybe fade into the black hole somewhere.
-
Fresh intelligent and wise--- what a refreshing change-- definitely the change we needed.
-
Just testing my new signature.
-
blaest, I think the viciousness of the diehard conservatives comes from and is fueled by Limbaugh, Hannity and their ilk, who apparently haven't let up on their hate speak one iota. Maybe events will eventually marginalize these people, and their audience will shrink. We can only hope.
All I know is that I truly am very hopeful for the first time in a long time. I have despised the right turn taken by our Country and the ignorance displayed by so many on the right. I have always considered myself an independent, and a centered, moderate but I got to tell you that I am incredibly happy right now with Obama and what it means for our country. And I am very happy with his pick for Chief of Staff. It bodes very well for a continued strong Israeli stance, which was the one thing that Obama really worried me about.
-
blaest- Obama is a uniter, he doesn't race bait, or class bait, or religion bait (though he rarely mentions atheists). Obama doesn't go to places and say, "you're the most patriotic people in America" he's inclusive. Obama didn't choose a racist for a running mate--- all positives. I'm just sorry that negative PR had you worried about Obama and Israel, because I think that PR is where the fears came from.
-
Felicia,
That was funny. But I'm from Alabama. Can I come too.LOL. We Obama supporters are down here trying not to rub it in but it's darn hard.

Bush Not Done Endangering Earth Just Yet
In the next few weeks, the Bush administration is expected to relax environmental-protection rules on power plants near national parks, uranium mining near the Grand Canyon and more mountaintop-removal coal mining in Appalachia.
So it seems the 1.2 million jobs lost this year and the 16 trillion dollars lost in the market is not enough for the Bush legacy.
Bush's pardon list should be a good one, i wonder if he will figure out how to pro-rate it for Rumsfeld and Cheney.
The end of the Bush reign is near, but not near enough for me.
-
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
OBAMA!! Sorry Ladies but this behavior from me could go on for a while as I am still on cloud 9!!! I apologize in advance.
YIPEEEEEEEEEEEE!!
Tracey
-
Laura: I know he's wreaking havoc with the environmentalists. What a shame. I heard he wants wolves off the endangered species list as well. So sad. Yep, the pardones ought to be good. ALl the presidents give them, but I'm sure there will be a couple of familiar names on GW's list.
-
I can't believe I'm saying this, but so far so good for the job Bush is doing trying for a smooth transition. Clinton didn't impress upon his staff the importance of this, or if he did, they didn't listen well. I hope Bush's outward statements match what he's doing behind the scenes.
-
Amy - I agree that Bush is being quite transparent and pro-active with the transition. He seemed much more genuine when he spoke of what a historic moment Obama's election was than McCain did. I also think W can't wait to get the hell out of dodge...lol!
I read something weird yesterday - I hope today's meeting between Bush and Obama is more "grown up" than the first time they met:
Four years ago, Obama and other newly elected members of the Senate were invited to the White House for a breakfast meeting with Bush, who pulled the young Chicagoan aside."Obama!" Bush exclaimed, according to Obama's account of the meeting in his second memoir, "The Audacity of Hope." "Come here and meet Laura. Laura, you remember Obama. We saw him on TV during election night. Beautiful family. And that wife of yours - that's one impressive lady."
The two men shook hands and then, according to Obama, Bush turned to an aide, "who squirted a big dollop of hand sanitizer in the president's hand."
Bush then offered some to Obama, who recalled: "Not wanting to seem unhygienic, I took a squirt."
-
Donna what is one weird story? Does Bush do that with every hand he shakes?
-
Amy - I don't know if he does it after every hand he shakes. I certainly hope that is the case, and I know lots of people who sanitize frequently (I am one of them..lol) but most people are more discreet, I would think. As a politician, you would think he'd have raw hands if he sanitized after every single shake!
-
Good Morning!!!
Another happy day in Obama Victory Land...I am not gloating, I am just happy for *everybody* because I think it's good for everybody.
Luv Emmanuel...he and Obama look like they've really got a good thing goin!!!
This is just word of mouth, I haven't even googled it yet, but last night I heard my husband and father-in-law guffawing over the fact that Sarah Palin thought Africa was a country, not a continent. How on earth could this happen in this day & age?!!!!
-
Dj- That gesture could easily have been taken the wrong way, particularly if it happened/happens with foreign dignitaries.
Linora-everytime I see your hand I think of Poe and the Raven "quoth the raven never more.... lenoreeeeee....' Yup- Newsweek reports at least one McCain high ranking campaign staffer told the reporter about Africa/knows-less-than-a-third-grader gaffe.

The Civil War ended when General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appottomax (sp?) to General U. S. Grant. Many northerners called for the death or at least imprisonment of Lee and his generals. The great Abe Lincoln said no - he wanted the general and his men granted respect and so the soldiers saluted General Lee as he and his men walked up to the courthouse. That gesture spoke volumes about the type of gracious man A. Lincoln was. I feel our new president is operating in the same way - no mean spirtness toward McCain, Palin or their campain staff.
I say we follow Obama's lead. We don't have the need to keep chewing sour grapes. What we really need to do is reach out to those who are still fretting in fear - if they will take the olive branch that is being extended it's a first step toward building our country back up. We all must work together - and it's going to take all of us to do it. We cannot sit back and expect one man no matter how great he may be to hoist us back up by himself. We have to do it - block by block, neighborhood by neighborhood, community by community, ctiy by city, state by state - it's a huge job but one we can do - damnit, we're Americans, we've done it before and we can do it again.
John F. Kennedy said those most inspiring words at his inauguration "ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country" - probably more true today than it was then.
".....with malice toward none" let's get this party started!
-
My thought? Do you know that feeling when you give two weeks notice? That's what GW's probably thinking! "I'm outta here"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am impressed however, with the manner in which Pres. Bush is making a concerted effort to make sure the new admin has all the info and help they need.

When we arrived in Jamaica last week, in the long car ride from Montego Bay to Bluefields, we heard a reggae song called Barack Obama. On the radio all we would hear about is the US election.
The people who worked as our staff in the villa asked many questions, and we had a few great conversations about politics. We drove through such poor areas of this beautiful country. I learned about healthcare, and education, and it made me think so differentely about the state of things in the US.
The night of the election, when Barack won, it was all over the radio and tv in Jamaica. The people were in the streets and very happy. They kept saying, "If he can, then we can"
We got in late last night after the hurricaine/tropical storm pounded the island. I'm so happy to be back home. I stayed up till 3am watching the speeches, and catching up on all that I had missed.
I have a million back pages to catch up on-- but I just wanted to share.
-
Good morning Obama Ladies!
Tracey..no apologies needed on your enthusiasm!!! I think we all have some of that going on! :-) I finally seen my friend on Sat. night who we watched the debates together. We opened up a bottle of champagne in honor of Barack rocking the vote!!!!
Laura...I agree with you. The end of W can not come soon enough! He is on his way out..but he still has the power right now.
There's going to be a lot of things to watch within the next few months. I'm behind Barack all the way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
g
-
Beth- We ,missed celebrating with you. I love hearing about Obama's win is spreading hope throughout the world.
Tracey-the enthusiasm is contageous.
I hope Bush doesn't try to ram too many enviromentally or socially harmful policies. I bet he'd get higher poll numbers if he went out being more bipartisan than he did his previous 46 months.
Palin alert- she's supposedly doing an interview with Matt Lauer-- ugh, aren't those 15 minutes over yet? I predict it will be divisive, sarcastic, blaming the media and/or democrats, "cute" (ala Tina Fey), partisan, and out of touch with reality (perhaps offering barack advice on energy). She seems to fancy herself an energy expert, when drill baby drill and alaskan oil doesn't make one an expert.
-
Amy...I head about that interview too. I think you're right on target with what to expect..or should we say "not expect" from her. I am just so glad she is back in Alaska. And really, why are they still interviewing her! If nothing else, it is entertaining to see how uninformed she is and what a giant farce she was/is.
-
Her 15 minutes of fame have elapsed....
-
I just heard a clip from the interview where she calls the McCain campaign staff that blabbed about her ignorance..... "jerks..." the commentator remarked it sounds like she's running in 2012 (from her defense of herself). Maybe some people like that kind of talk, but I find it low brow and base.
-
Linora and Tracey, love your joy! It's perfectly OK to express your happiness on this thread. That's what it's here for.
Beth, welcome back. What a fun time to be in Jamaica. It's so exciting that Obama is inspiring people around the world. I just heard an Irish song about O'Bama being Irish. Funny. They prounounce his first name, Bay-rack.
I think Bush has had that two-week notice 'tude for all of 2008. Remember the Olympics?
-
I've tried having a respectful conversation on the other thread but given how hateful some of them are it is almost impossible to do so. I'mnot even a Democrat, but an Independent. But I too am, for the first time in a long time, very optimistic about our country and finally where it is heading.
-
I think it is all hilarious. I love that Palin is coming back and saying "It was McCain's election that was lost"'; not her's. I think she and Todd will have a reality show where it is explained how abstinence only doesn't work, how to shoot wolves from a helicopter, how to spend as much money as possible on Gucci shoes for kids and jackets that look like 80's Michael Jackson's, and maybe how to cook a moose.
I will give McCain kudos for his graciousness during the concession speech (though not during the campaign). I think the analogies of Bush wanting to be out of there and fast are on target. I mean what further could he do to mess up this country besides push "the button"?
I am, seriously, for the first time in my life, excited for the future of our children, our country and our world. It's a huge job to inherit, but I trust Obama (with the advisors he is never too pompous unlike others to talk with) can do it. The most exciting part of this entire election was watching our youth get so impassioned, watching our international friends cheer us on and having senior citizens I was driving to the polls in lively debates about why change is good and influence stance conservatives into recognizing we all deserve rights and a new vision. I literally saw 70 and 80 year old people who grew up hating blacks learn that we are equal and that race didn't mean diddly squat. I would have driven them to register and vote anyway and kept my mouth shut (I should pierce my tongue, I have so many holes), but it was exciting to see that we can learn to get past our prejudices even as we're older and to educate ourselves to help provide a dynamic future for our society.
What didn't feel good was California's Proposition 8 (we don't even live there but sent money against it) and especially Arkansas voting against gay adoptions/foster homes. I am in the field and it absolutely sucks that there are willing, happy healthy potential families with two mommies or two daddies but don't fit the Arkansas defininition out there for kiddos in need. The US did great electing a president but we still have a lot to do as far as equal rights go and for taking care of children in need. Think about when biracial marriages were illegal. We can't stop the fight. To be honest, I've been sort of disappointed that Obama hasn't taken a harder stand on this with his "civil union" beliefs, but I know he had to sort of be careful in order to be elected. I was disappointed in his not defending Muslimism too, but it was an election and there are so many prejudiced people. Deep in my heart, I believe he knows how important this issues are and that he will ultimately make the best decisions possible to represent us all (after he solves world peace, flies to Venus, and cures cancer, LOL).

I was disappointed in his not defending Muslimism too
Actually he did, unless my memory is playing tricks on me. I saw a Larry King retrospective look back and he had Obama on his show months ago, or maybe a year ago, and Obama mentioned the Muslim thing, if I recall, and how it was a slur against all of the good muslims everywhere, or some such thing.
-
That is great. I wanted to see him say whether or not he was Muslim didn't matter. I hope we get to the point where it doesn't matter what our religions, our sexual orientation, our gender, or our race is. It should be all about character and integrity. We made one milestone and I hope the others are addressed during my lifetime.

Blaest,
Give it up on the other thread. Your'e baiting them and pissing them off. You won't convince them of anything--their minds are made up (funny, they accuse us of everything we accuse them of.)
Hang out here if you wish and talk policy and transition with us "wonks." Over there, you're stirring up a hornet's nest--which I think is your intent, no? It's just more divisive.
I'll be interested to see how this transition goes with the Bust admin. As I recall, when Bush met with Clinton, he didn't want to hear a word of what Clinton thought was important. ANd it took Clinto forever to name his own transition team. Something tells me that even with his own agenda, Obama has learned from mistakes of the past and will move forward with care and quickness. I like a leader who can listen and learn, and then decide, as the situations dictate.

Watch it again and again, WE answer the doubt with Barack Obama's Victory Speech
http://elections.nytimes.com/2008/results/president/speeches/obama-victory-speech.html#
Regardless, of the wingers that can not get on board with change we will prevail and with the MANDATE that President Obama has won.
It is now his to lose, before it is their's to win.
