One more thing - is anyone else disturbed by McCain's physical appearance as of late?  I know he is aging and none of us age gracefully, but his left eye barely stays open.  What is up with that?

Given his history of 4 bouts with melanoma, including malignant melanoma, coupled with his infamous bad temper and inability to keep facts straight (Sunni vs. Shia, to name one example) -- the only ingredient that makes this recipe even more scary to me is that Sarah Palin and her "first dude" will be tapped to take over when McCain is either dead or finally deemed mentally incompetent!

DJD, I did notice changes in McCain's appearance. We've seen the pictures of how the presidency ages people and McCain can't afford to age any and still be competent. That's part of the reason I;ve been so strongly opposed to Palin's selection/punt. Did you see her interviewed by Katie Couric? She's not honest enough to admit what she doesn't know and I find her frightening.

In the last week, McCain has changed his mind 8 times!  I heard that on one of the news shows yesterday.  Sounds like he is running in a panic mode to me.

I liked what Obama said, and it appears that McCain once again tried to hit below the belt instead of them going at this together.

Im hoping the debates go on as scheduled and wish they would change the topic to the economy.

Regarding his health - I too have noticed and he doesnt look well.  Im seeing lots of tremors!

This business of blaming individual borrowers, even in part, for the financial mess is a ridiculous dodge.  Anyone who's ever gotten a mortgage through a reputable company knows that you have to disclose pretty much every detail about your financial history and supply records, from bank statements to pay stubs.  All the information you give is easy to verify through credit companies.  The only way you could lie and get away with it is if the lender is looking the other way.  People who got the variable loans may have figured, and may have been told by the broker, that they could refinance if the payments got too high.  But if you fall behind at all, or were under-qualified to begin with, then you're never going to qualify for a harder-to-get fixed rate.  In the past, it was the lenders' responsibility to determine a person's credit risk, not the borrowers'.

So has McCain single-handedly saved Wall Street yet?  I think he's in danger of looking like a political drama queen with these impulsive, extreme moves.  It sounds like his campaign staff is constantly scrambling to do his latest bidding.  Is that how he's going to run his administration?  Meanwhile, Obama is remaining calm, focused and steady.

I agree Amy that all these little lies (and some big ones), including the one McCain told to Letterman, make their overall honesty suspect.  But they don't seem to care if they get caught out.  Maybe they figure that the people they're appealing to don't watch or read the news.

I saw clips from Palin's Couric interview and ditz is the only word that comes to mind.  I noticed they're finally bringing out that tape of her being blessed by the Kenyan "exorcist" in Wasilla.  I guess since the McCain folks are resurrecting Rev. Wright, it was time to showcase Palin's wacky religious connections.  This guy makes Wright look like Billy Graham.

    Davis still with lobbying firm

Either Rick Davis is lying to McCain or

Davis and McCain are lying to the American people.

Rick Davis, John McCain's campaign manager, has remained the treasurer and a corporate director of his lobbying firm this year, despite repeated statements by campaign officials that he had ended his relationship with the firm in 2006,according to corporate records.

laura, davis owns a financial state in his firm too, even though he's on a leave of absence, so he profits from any money taken in. Do you think McCain is blissfully unaware or lying or senile?

Someone suggested if McCain really doesn't want to debate friday, how about let the VP candidates debate instead. That would be a hoot!

McCain supposedly suspended his campaign, including campaign ads. In fact he has political talking points that he mistakenly send to the press all about it. Sarah Palin is due in PA today -- I guess she didn't get the message yet.

Just what people were predicting . . . that the McPain campaign would try to use the financial crisis to weasel out of the VP debate:

CNN's Dana Bash reports that McCain officials are "trying to negotiate with the Obama campaign and the presidential debate commission" to change next Thursday's planned vice presidential debate into a McCain-Obama affair. The VP debate would be postponed to another date.

"That is what they are proposing," Bash reported. "[McCain officials] understand very well that both the Obama campaign and the debate commission have no intention of delaying Friday's debate, but...if there is no bailout deal by Friday, McCain has no plan to go to debate.

A one-on-one with Lehrer sounds great to me!

Oh, McCain will debate. He'll show up and be petulant and say he should be in DC solving this crisis and vote (hmmm, easy for him to pick this easy target for voting, after his dismal voting record for our veterans!) but he's debating because he has no choice; that his opponent didn't see fit to suspend the campaign. Etc etc etc.

McCain is still desperately trying to get out of formal debates and into town halls. He suggested putting off the VP debate Thursday and have him and Obama debate somewhere then.

Barak just better not back off. He was right on target when he said a president should be able to multi-task, and he can do both the debate/campaign as well as help Congress if they need him there.

The Repugs are being so ridiculous about all this. Methinks they are scared...

Let McCain cancel the debate and give Obama the whole time--- free advertising. Sure the repugs want to move the VP debate-- or cancel it, Ms Palin is not ready for prime time.

suz -ole miss has spent 5m and a year and a half getting ready for the debate, it is going on whether mccain is there or not. my guess is he will show. public opinion is the debate should proceed.

amy - mccain's davis problem is not going away, either davis lied to mccain or the both of them are lying to the American people. enter timmons, mccain's appointed transition leader, he has been a lobbyist forever (77 years old) and worked at getting john lennon deported for nixon in the seventies.

donna - painful palin interview, just painful. clearly in way over her head.

this bailout thing is such a mess, frankly i think taxpayers should sent every elected and appointed official home and off to bed with no dinner. we deserve better.

what, taxpayers have to spend 700m bailing out wall street but we can't afford a healthcare plan?

just nuts...i am pissed...can you tell? lolLaughing

looking forward to hearing obama speak tomorrow evening!

sorry--I pop in and out of here and only read bits and pieces...so, forgive me if I repeat or gloss over someone's comments...don't mean to.

This election has turned so totally around for me--initially, I had my "players" lined up and was really excited about what was coming------ooopsss! lots of blindsides and double-whammies.......

so, now, on to the current playing field   This fence sitter has fallen to the Obama side (I want big cyber huggggsssss from Amy!!!)...

I did listen to Pres B's speech and all I got from it was if "this initiative" is passed--it will be easier for people to get loans for housing, small businesses........somebody help me--I thought that was what initially caused the problems......the easy credit and then, the economy not keeping up...we must get 40+ solicitations a month to switch our credit card or apply for a new one...Either I misunderstood what was said or I missed something...

I read a newspaer article by some economist, written long ago, and I blew it off--so can't quote any who/where/when, but the gist of the article then was that the US was on its way to becoming the newest third world country--damn, I can see that happening--probably not in my lifetime, but my grandkids might need to learn some basic survival skills.

sorry, I rambled off basic topic of thread....so, GO  OBAMA!!!!!!

I honestly had not heard of this man before this election and when I heard his name, I thought, who could this be?  a fraud of some sort???? and he is BLACK????  back-the-truck-up!!!!

I caught his visit to  Germany, and decided if those in other lands thought so highly of him, to the point of adoration, I had a responsibility to hear what this guy has to say.  which i did for several weeks.  Conclusion - Barack Obama is a good person, as good as you will find in politics today, who can stand tall and proud, reestablish a sense of self-respect, hope, excitement and a sense of achievement in the U.S. again.

Peaceful intellectual exchanges between great minds and great powers (rather than preemptive strikes) would  be a nice change. Espcially for all the kids.  Only for the kids.  How dare these warmongers steal away entire childhoods over matters that can be settled in a conference room.

Lynne- I'm so glad to hear from you. I think Obama being popular in europe is a great thing, that's how we build coalitions and come together for the greater good of the world. I believe that keeps us safer as a country as well.

Nic- Imagine if Obama's preacher had prayed over him to keep the witches away- the repugs would be out in droves scaring voters from him, blaming him.

Sarah, Sarah, Sarah- Dealing with foreign entities in terms of negotiating deals she reminded us that russia flies planes over Alaska and she says this with such frightening confidence. If McCain was 10 years younger and healthier this wouldn't be quite so frightening,

So, McCain said he would suspend his campaign and go to Washington to "help" solve the financial crisis.  Following that statement he:

    1.  Continued to campaign

    2.  Met with that rich lady - I am too lazy to look up her name)

    3.  Didn't go to Washington

    4.  Lied to David Letterman (HUGE mistake!)

Then, Congress announced that they were on the verge of reaching a bipartisan deal.  So what does McCain do?

    1.  Goes to Washington

    2.  Stages a photo op with W

    3.  Derails the agreement

Desperate, dishonest, bad for the country, putting presidential aspirations before country.  Yeah - that's what I want in a leader.  NOT!

Counting down to the debate...I will laugh my a$$ off if McCain is a no-show.

shokk....You have asked me a good question, and I will try to answer you as honestly as I can.

First of all, let me restate that I am a Catholic who believes that life begins at conception, and that no one has the right to end that life.....The only time an "abortion" is tolerated is when a pregnancy is terminated as the result of a necessary medical treatment.....That is official Church teaching.

For years I the pro-life issue has been my litmus test for every vote I made.....Nothing else about the candidate mattered to me.....Just his/her position on abortion.....

After a while, I knew I did not like many of those I had voted for...Indeed, eight years of the Bush administration did it fo rme.....I simply cannot vote Republican this time.....

There are many pro-life Democrats....There is actually a website.......We hate it that the Democratic Party is known for it's pro-choice.....To me, it's a choice of whether or not to allow a child to be born or to kill him/her.....No baby should have to pay for an adult's mistakes or situation with his or her life...The child is innocent, and bears no blame for anything....

Abortion is often a painful, horrible procedure.....Limbs are counted.....and the very thought of plulnging a pair of scissors in to the scull of an infant being born is so repugnant that I cannot imagine a doctor...pledged to "do no harm" performing such a task.

I do not see that the Republican Party has really done much to stem the tide of abortions.... Abortion has become a "normal" part of American life...a shameful part, but nonetheless a fact.

I am sure I have not fully answered your question...How can I, a pro-life Catholic, vote for a pro-choice candidate?.....I can only say that I am just plain tired of the way things have been going.....I'm not smart enough to know how to fix things, but I know we cannot reasonably tolerate another four years of Bush/McCain.

Another reason I am not voting for McCain is that I believe he is too old....and he has had Cancer four times......And it scares me to death that Sarah Palin has a more than even chance  of becoming  President if McCain is elected in November....Choosing Palin as a running mate was a real deal breaker for me.....There is something about her that makes me very uncomfortable....And we share some values....We are both pro-live and against gun-control.  The idea of her becoming President simply chills my blood.....

I just turned sixty-five.....I still work (just three five-hour days a week), and am very busy with family, church and my job.....However, I don not have the energy and staying  power I did when I was younger..... McCain is in his seventies.....I just can't see it.....

This has been a really hard decision for me.....I am breaking with my own personal tradition of voting for only pro-life candidates....Last time I caved in and voted for Bush, and was not happy with myself....I was, and am, furious at his precipitation of an unneccesary war.

Sorry to be so long...and rambling.....I think I am still working all of this out in my mind....

Hard to keep up with developments, but now McCain's saying he will participate in the debate after all.  Apparently Obama legally can't go ahead and do a one-on-one thing because of fairness restrictions, so if McCain doesn't show up, all that time and money spent preparing for the debate will have been wasted.

I said it before, but what a drama queen this guy is!  It's all about John McCain and his need to play hero.  He's just a fly in the ointment cause he don't know squat about finance, hasn't been in the Senate since April, and isn't on any of the relevant committees.  I'd be pissed too if I were Barney Frank (I loved Frank's remark that McCain reminded him of Andy Kaufmann doing his Mighty Mouse routine--"here I am to save the day!").  Like most of us, I'm in the dark about high finance, but I sure as hell don't trust McCain to get it right.

I'm amazed at how many conservative pundits are turning against McCain.  Palin seems to be galvinizing them.  Hearing her try to speak is bad enough, when you see her words on paper, it's even more frighteningly hilarious.  At least that infamous YouTubed beauty pagaent contestant had the excuse of being young.  I thought Katie Couric's comments about the interview were way too kind.  She complimented Palin for her pluckiness, like it was a virtue to be over-confident and clueless.

Lynne, yes, I think Obama is a good man.  Maybe his relative youth is really his best asset.  He's not quite so worn down and cynical.  He still believes in the process and makes us believe in it too.  His detractors poo-poo the inspirational side of his appeal, but how can we go forward if we don't believe in what we're doing?

Nicki, I did notice when I was watching McCain yesterday the thing with his drooping eye.  Maybe he's just really tired.  Playing hero is hard on an old guy, you know.

There's going to be an Obama fund-raising rally in my neighborhood tomorrow.  Can't wait to buy some homebaked cookies for the cause!

    ladysuz -

I think the McCain campaign asked the Republicans to come up with a different proposal at the 11th hour just so McCain could somehow be seen as having "solved" a crisis.  So, yes, I think it is fair to say McCain "derailed" the process for political expediency.  He has nothing left to lose.

He's behaving erratically and that should scare the bejeezus out of anyone considering giving him their vote.

OMG, nicki, I thought it was spelled aphasia, but yes I've noticed it.

Traitor Leiberman is singing McCain's praises on MSNBC. What a weasel.

DJ- when McCain lies it's being a maverick-- don't you know that LOL. If I never hear the term maverick again it will be way too soon for me.

Ok folks---  we are having a contest-- predict how many times McCain will say FRIEND or MY FRIENDS during the debate. The winner gets---------------hopefully an Obama presidency with  either Hillary clinton as secretary of state or senate majority leader (I know-- I've softened a bit on the Clintons).

My prediction is 12. I might be playing a drinking game with this, only the drinks will be a tiny tiny sip due to not wanting to be drunk.

Not sure what station I'll watch the debates on, probably PBS or CNN because McCain looks REALLY OLD on HDTV then I'll do ABC commentary followed by MSNBC to hear what Rachel has to say.

OMG BREAKING NEWS Palin misspoke when she said she never met with the head of a foreign government-- while on layover in iceland she met the preside of the superpower and major world playuer. Iceland

    Wow,

Some great comments here, and welcome to those who have joined us! Your comments are very astute!

Okay, Amy, I'll play your game. Let's see, how many times will McC use "friends, my friends" during the debate? I will guess 24 times. I just know he will reach this number, or maybe even surpass it.

I have a few comments, so hopefully I won't be hijacking the thread!!

The Republican party is trying to OUST Lieberman (or at least get him to leave) because they consider him a "traitor" to his politics and don't trust him. Karma does come around to bite you in the butt every time!! Where will he go next? Back to the democrats with his tail between his legs?? IMHO: Just rewards.

Regarding the mortgage issue and underqualified people: I'd like to share an article that was in our local paper several weeks ago. A young, Mexican couple (both of whom worked in the fields every day and earned $500. per week were "dreaming" of owning a house one day while living in low income apt w/2 children. They saw an open house sign and decided to look at what they wanted to buy SOME DAY! The realtor encouraged them to apply for a loan to buy the house, by coming to her office and she would submit the loan application. The house cost $700,000.+ and they told her over and over again that they didn't make enough money to buy the house. "Don't worry" she said. "I've got all types of loans and I'm sure the broker will find the right one for you." She sent in the papers, low and behold, they qualified for the loan. They decided to buy the house with another couple and split the costs. Well, of course, they couldn't make the first payment--they only had $1500.--the realtor said, that's okay she would take care of the rest as she wanted to help them. HUH? So, for 5 months the payments went this way, with the realtor kicking in $3,000. every month. Finally, the families could not continue to make the payments, and the house was foreclosed on them. Now, they had no place to live, and only $1500. towards another place. In addition, they lost their low income housing, and were put on a waiting list (2 years of waiting) for another apartment.

It turns out that the realtor made a huge bundle off of the house, even with foreclosure. It turned out that she was doing this all over the county with houses she had obtained and quickly turned around in sale, foreclosure, sale, foreclosure--on and on--preying on the poor and those with little experience in buying a home. Even though she "gave" them $3K every month, she walked away with over $60+K on just that one home after 5 months. She was getting rich, very rich off this scheme. What she did is, submit loan papers for the couple that listed their income at over $100K per year. No proof or documentation was attached. Didn't need it evidently (the reason why escapes me now). So, the mortgage broker approved the loan--with no $$ down. I'm sure it was an ARM, not fixed. This is the tadpole in the large pond. But the bigger fish feed on the small ones--and so on up the ladder--until we have these huge mortgage companies that are willing to gamble taxpayers' dollars on whether a family can afford to stay in a house they gave them a mortgage to. And we want to bail these large companies out?

I say, fire the CEOs and all the other C whatevers from these companies--clean out the top and start over--and NO, I repeat NO, golden parachutes or wonderful severance packages. We, the taxpayers should not have to pay for their greed. What goes around, comes around. Of course I don't a depression--but don't threaten the American people that we won't be able to buy a car, gas, food, housing; if we don't have this bailout--Bushy went too far on that one. He was always a loser, and will always be a loser. It's too bad it is taking the american people of this great nation so long to realize it. The wake up call should have been 4 years ago--the alarm went off, and the american people turned it to snooze and went back to sleep. It will take years to recover from this. I am really sad that this Administration has almost single-handedly destroyed our reputation, or economy, and our fight for justice and peace for the world. We are as bad, if not "badder" than the terrorists we are fighting against. It just breaks my heart and I am really disallusioned by this. I hope we can recover, and I believe that Obama is the candidate who has the ability to restore our great nation and make it even better than it was or is.

Finally, it was either CNN or MSNBC that reported yesterday that Senator Obama has spent more time in the Senate in the past 18 months than Senator McCain. I mean, like many, many days and votes more! So, keep that in mind every time you hear the Republicans chastise Obama for never being in the Senate since he began his campaign for the White House--here's to great success and a new era in our country and in our history.

    Go Obama!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, almost forgot, keep seeing bumper stickers that say: I'm a white woman and I'm voting for Obama. Also: I'm an old, white woman and I'm voting for Obama. I get a chuckle every time I see these, and the elderly women driving on the highway (and they appear to be in their 70s+).

Can't wait for the debate--I think McCain will lose this one, and Palin will lose next week.

    Maire,

I am sorry to say I am beginning to understand that some Republicans....not the rank and file, but the leaders.....are indeed using the abortion issue to get us to vote for them....After years of waiting for them to actually DO something about this horrible killing of babies, I have decided that nothing is going to happen....

Catholics, as a rule, understand that it is our Christian duty to care for everyone, and the Democratic Party does seem to embrace some of those ideals.  OTOH, I can never seem to be able to get the idea of caring for the sick, homeless, uninsured, missunderstood, etc.  to mesh with feeling it is Ok to end the life of a child....unborn (or partially so) or not, a child is a child.....I have a lot of trouble bringing tose ideas together.

As Catholics we are always to exercise an Optoin for the Poor....the Sick, the Homeless, the Uninsured, and I believe the unborn, who are so defenseless and innocent.

Having said all of this, I am still voting for Obama, as I believe he is the best choice for our country.  I am actually working as a staff member in our county's headquarters.  I just cannot abide the thought of McCain/Palin.....It scares me to death.

One of the things I love about this forum, and this country, is that we are free to respectully disagree with one another....and disagreeing on important issues does not mean we cannot admire and respect one another.

    Maire,

I'm sorry if my comment about the bumper stickers offended you. I guess I should have explained my thought process completely. On some blogs people are stating that the black people are voting for Obama because he has black skin. Well, I think these bumper stickers are making a political statement and pointing out that not just blacks are voting for Obama. My dh and mother are also driving down that highway with Obama stickers on their respective autos.

For me, abortion is a personal choice to be made by the pregnant individual. It should not be a concern of the government to say it is legal or illegal. We as individuals are able to make our choice, and as some might believe will be judged after they die by their maker.

Right now, the economy and ending the Iraqi war are 2 very important reasons for deciding who I will vote for in November.

Again, I apologize if I offended you. It was not my intention and I am sorry.
