Im glad I missed the picture.  I think it would have frazzled my nerves a bit today.

I dont know what I want regarding the bailout.  I feel as if these big corporations are toying with me.  I feel like Wall Street is toying with me.  And Im wondering if I have been scared for nothing.

Thats it - I cant say no more - without putting my foot in my mouth.

warren buffett says bail out is necessary for the average american. suze orman says it should have been passed today. it seems to go beyond wall street and is having a profound negative effect on credit markets that effect the companies that many americans work for.

i am far from happy about the economy in need of taxpayer support, but from the white house down it appeared to be a done deal.

rep.roy blunt, r-mo. - thought he had the support of 12 more votes than he did, and a speech stood in the way.

the republican party has lost any hope of gaining the white house in november

Remember, folks, we're dealing with POLITICIANS here. I bet you if you did an analysis of who voted against it, you'd find that folks on both sides of the aisle who are up for re-election this term did what their constituents wanted to save their political hides. America first my butt; they did what would help them keep their seats...

Ladysuz, I like your plan.  Seems reasonable to me.  The current bill does't have enough protections for ordinary folks and too much protection for executives.  Don't know if they can turn it around, given the powerful financial lobbyists and the flood of calls and emails from both sides decrying it.  Progressive economists want a stimulus package to go along with a more modest bailout, one that would create jobs through public works and keep people in their houses.  Whatever they do, I think they should deal with the immediate bank crisis first (if it's real), then take their time to get the long-term picture right.  Enough with these 3 page memos!

Ann, good links.  Hope they help the undecideds.

    Happy Rosh Hashanah!

Justana, I called Palin "the vagina' because I truly believe McCain picked her for her vagina rather than her brain and I think that's an insult to women and feminism to have a token woman who is as unqualified as Palin. I stand by that comment, which I would have never said about a qualified woman.,

LauraP, while I do not disagree with the picture, I worry that if we resort to funny pictures those who posted the pic of Obama shining Palin's shoes won't be able to see the difference between political satire and racism. Afterall, they elected Bush twice and practically brag about racism.

About the bailout, I admit I didn't read the whole thing, but there was a lot I did like about it as a lesser of two evils. I have my own economic plan-- and it's not that complicated.

1)Identify which banks, insurances and lending institutions have been playing by (most of) the rules and target them for saving.

2)Funnel money through the FHA to those banks to refinance homes for homes under a middle income dollar amount variable to housing prices by area because some places you can buy a house for $100,000 that would be close to $1,000,000 somewhere else so that the middle and low income home owners in good standing (with an exception for the prior 6 months or so) can refinance their loans at low interest fixed rate amounts.

    3) Identify banks/lenders who engaged in predatory lending practices and allow them to pay substantial fines in order to get back into good standing and participate in the FHA lending.

4)Seek civil legal redress for fired/bankrupted CEOs who's salaries were not commiserate with the success of their institutions.

    5) Set up an oversight board to monitor this with people from different parties  with differing experiences who can be checks and balances for each other (paging Warren Buffet).

Now, as for financing this- any industry that makes money off people (oil companies, banks etc.) at a rate of 200% of inflation will have to provide windfall profit offset. Gas and Oil Companies could offer free product for heating/cooling to middle and low income people. Since they're giving free product rather than money, they're giving at cost which would be cheaper for them than paying retail.

In addition to heating assistance that's given to low income folks, also provide them with the new lightbulbs, which can also cut their electric bills and are more environmentally friendly because they use less energy, so it's a win/win.

amy - i thought hard about posting a picture of the other presidential candidate as it was a candid and not a satirical piece i thought it pc. if you disagree let me know via pm and i will delete it. i have no desire to incite racist rant. mind you i do come from some very rough and tumble politcal internet threads and respect this as a peaceful and positive obama place.

i know you are not big on polls but i thought you might find this of interest

Thank you LAPhoenix for the links.  I am literaly exhausted and about to hit the deadlines for gettng these seniors to register, but it's good.  Everyone should get a say.  I have some senior friends, including my mom, who haven't voted in decades.  It's exciting to see what happens!

What a great thread!  I didn't see the pix on the republican thread, but my thoughts are that at this point they are reaching for anything!  So, let them crawl in that hole.  McCain, just throw him a piece of cheese, he looks like a little beady eyed rat that is trying to claw his way out of a pit!  And Palin..please...what a freakin joke!  She is SO out of her league that it boarders on insane.  I can't wait for the debate just for the laughs on her end.  I am going to make some bumper stickers "Palin..the bridge to no where" and "Palin for VP..Thanks, but NO THANKS!"  If for some bizarre reason McCain gets elected..there is a more serious problem in this country than the bail out!!  Go OBAMA!!

justanna-  not A vagina THE vagina . I don't refer to women that way, except for that specific woman as choice for VP. I doubt I will ever use the term again for a candidate because I'm sure no politician will again pick a grossly unqualified and unintelligent hypocritical woman for the ticket again in an effort to get women who are diametrically opposed to Hillary Clinton's values and political positions. Women aren't stupid enough to fall for that,.

I watched the second "Couric interview" last night and had to laugh.  The woman is clueless and had to jhave "Daddy McCain" answer FOR her.  I had to shut it off after the "got'cha journalism" comment.  Since when is a voter asking a legitimate question considered "Got'cha" journalism?  She is totally out of her league.

I am very impressed with the calmness that Obama has shown through this bailout storm, it will serve him and America well as President.

The bar is set very low for Sarah's debate performance, this could be a small problem.

The commanding lead that Obama has in the polls will be very hard to challenge and as long as we can rock the vote

we should easily see an end to the reign of King George.

Given how controlled the VP debate is going to be, I wouldn't be surprised if Palin does OK reciting her talking points.  If she gets an unexpected, left-field question, or one that's very specific, she might be in trouble, but I'm predicting she won't totally embarrass herself.  Biden has to be very careful how he comes across.  Some folks have suggested he just ignore her, but I think he'll look as condescending as McCain did the other night if he does.

I thought Tina Fey's bit the other night was hilarious because half of it was just her reciting the Couric interview word for word.  No need to exaggerate.  The line "I'd like to use a lifeline please" fit so perfectly with Palin's comments about "gotcha journalism" and "if you want to play stump the candidate."  Yes, Sarah, we do!

I'm getting reports from my friend who used to live in Alaska that the Troopergate investigation is major news there.  People are really incensed that she's blowing it off.   For one thing, the commissioner she demoted was Native American and her relationship with the Natives was already rocky to begin with.

Meanwhile, Obama continues to stay above the fray while McCain spins around doing his 180s.  Given his penchant for dramatics, I'm afraid he's going to unleash some outrageous October surprise.  I don't think he's going to be getting any help from the White House, though, given how he screwed them with the bailout vote.

Tina Fey is going to have a field day with the the 4th part of the couric interview. Who are they going to get to play her grandfather, er I mean John McCain.

Laurap, I'm also impressed with Obama's calmness and his working behind the scenes, unlike McCain who claims he swooped in to save the bailout. Obama is so right about the negotiations NOT needing to be inflicted with presidential politics.

The repugs are backing away from blaming Pelosi's true speech about the Bush administration and deregulation getting us into this mess.

LuAnn - the vp debate is thursday evening

according to the new york times the format has been changed a bit:

At the insistence of the McCain campaign, the Oct. 2 debate between the Republican nominee for vice president, Gov. Sarah Palin, and her Democratic rival, Senator Joseph R. Biden Jr., will have shorter question-and-answer segments than those for the presidential nominees, the advisers said. There will also be much less opportunity for free-wheeling, direct exchanges between the running mates.

McCain advisers said they had been concerned that a loose format could leave Ms. Palin, a relatively inexperienced debater, at a disadvantage and largely on the defensive.

The wrangling was chiefly between the McCain-Palin camp and the nonpartisan Commission on Presidential Debates, which is sponsoring the forums.

    ...........................

The bar has been set pretty low for Ms. Palin with her recent interview performance. Debating the chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee , Joe Biden would seem daunting to me if I was Sarah, she might surprise us all.

Evidently there is more Couric tape that will show Wednesday and Thursday.

I have heard this debate is expected to break all records for number of viewers on any previous vp debates.

Laurap...very interesting stuff about the change in the debate format.  That's too bad.  I was hoping for the more open format so she would hang her self quicker.  However..I believe she'll do it anyway.  I am going to be watching just for that.  As otherwise, the sound of her voice is like nails on a chalk board to me.

g - i agree her shrill, devisive, sarcastic way is like nails on a chalk board to me too. reminds me of bush.

but it seems after watching tina fey, everytime i see palin i think of fey. so i just laugh.

i was surprised to see so many highly respected conservative columnists like Kathleen Parker, David Frum, David Brooks come out against her.

it's the REPUBLICANS that want Palin to drop out.

mccain made a very poor choice there.

Oh yeah- her voice is horrible. She can't name a magazine she's read-- all of them? WTF?  She won't answer a straight question. she's gone out so far on a limb to say she wouldn't take the morning after pill and she doesn't want people who have abortions to go to jail...

I have to say that I despise Sarah Palin. Part 510 of the Katie Couric interview-- Palin says one of her best friends is gay and that she likes her friend but it's not a choice she would have made----Yell  HELLOOOOOOOOOOOO?  Yeah, gay people sit around saying, oh, lets make a choice, should I be straight or gay... hmmmmm.... oh what the hell, I'll do the lesbian thing, since society is so much easier on gays than heteros....She says she's not going to judge adults on the decisions they make-- it wasn't a decision or a choice-- it just was. I really despise that woman.

the only problem with the repubs is that they;d only find someone worse than she is. Romney? Hell no- he's in bed with wall street. Huckabee wants to rework the constitution so it's more like his bible? Rudy? Another war monger?  McCain doesn't want anyone smart enough to challenge him, so Olympic Snowe would be out and can you imagine any woman being 2nd choice to Sarah Palin--- that would be a huge insult.

ballots have been printed, early voting has started in ohio, palin is in.

she is sure to provide political entertainment this month; you have the debate tuesday, oct.2

and oct.6 her tax returns submission deadline and oct.10 troopergate will rule its ugly head.

it seems one  witness in the Troopergate investigation has changed her tune once she was sworn under oath to avoid perjury charges. Muriel owns a company that processes workers' compensation claims and has told an independent investigator that she was urged by the office of Gov. Sarah Palin to deny a benefits claim for Palin's ex brother-in-law, a state trooper  despite evidence that the claim appeared to be legitimate, according to state officials who were briefed about the conversation.

yep, with the little extra incentive of avoiding perjury charges, she has admitted that she was asked to deny the claim - at the direct request of Sarah and Todd Palin.

    workmans comp fraud ... mmm...

october is going to be a very busy month for ms palin, lots of multi-tasking.

ladysuz - oh yah the linksLaughing

first, here is the transcript of the phone conversation known as smoking gun number 1

page 15 is where it gets interesting, as i recall

    http://consortiumnews.com/EthicsDocument.pdf

the recorded telephone call by a Palin aide, Frank Bailey, to Lt. Rodney Dial of the Alaska State Troopers on Feb. 29. In that call, Bailey asked a pointed question about the continued employment of Mike Wooten, the trooper who divorced Palin's sister, Molly McCann.

"Why is this guy still representing the department?" Bailey asked.

He went on to tell Dial: "Todd and Sarah are scratching their heads, why on earth hasn't, why is this guy still representing the department? He's a horrible recruiting tool. ... You know, I mean from their perspective, everyone's protecting him."

Both Palin and Bailey say he'd acted on his own in making the call, but the investigation had been looking into whether the governor, her husband and other administration officials knew about the call or helped direct it.

During the call, Bailey appeared privy to information from Wooten's confidential personnel files. Bailey later told the Legislature's investigator, Stephen Branchflower, that he'd received the information from the governor's husband. Todd Palin, although a private citizen, frequently participates in a range of official duties. He had been copied in on official state e-mails, now withheld from the public on the grounds of executive privilege.

Palin Implicated By Witness in ‘Troopergate' Probe

An Alaska woman who owns a company that processes workers' compensation claims in the state has told an independent investigator that she was urged by the office of Gov. Sarah Palin to deny a benefits claim for Palin's ex brother-in-law, a state trooper who was involved in an ugly divorce and child custody dispute with Palin's sister, despite evidence that the claim appeared to be legitimate, according to state officials who were briefed about the conversation.

Well...sorry for Alaska that they'll have her back again, but thank god for the rest of us!  I wouldn't want them to switch out Palin at this time.  She is a big reason that the McCain/Palin ticket will flop!!  So..more power to them!  I was at a Jackson Browne concert last night, which was great, and he did more than a few jabs at what is going on in Washtington right now.  "Vote for Change" were his last words.  The crowd went crazy!  Of course, this is Portland, OR we're talking about, but I think more and more people are starting to get outraged, and it's about time!!!!!!!!!!!! We need to be loud more than ever now!!

seems that gwen is getting some backlash for her role as debate moderator as she has a book coming out after the election.

John McCain told FOX News Wednesday he believes Ifill will be "objective" at the debate.
"Does this help if she has written a book that's favorable to Senator Obama? Probably not," McCain said. "But I have confidence Gwen Ifill will do a professional job."

The debate moderators were agreed to on August 6. Ifill's book was reported in the Associated Press two weeks earlier.

yeah laura- I've been following troopergate. Apparently some of the people she told to lie under oath are being honest about what she's done.Usually the  coverup and lies that are the downfalln not the original deed. If Palin had said, "you know, I used bad judgment in bringing family issues into her role as governor and I'd like to apologize to X and Y." How bad would that have been compared to criminal behavior in covering it up and the loss of trust for continuing to lie.

I really hope that I can watch the debate tomorrow night. The B and B only has 1 TV and apparently they watch a lot of movies.  I have my computer and TV band radio so I hope  with all that I can listen. I hate feeling like I'm missing anything. I love to form my own opinions and see if the pundits pick up on the same things as I did.

I think we'd best not count our chickens before they are hatched, because the republicans will do anything and sink to any level to win. I'm sure they'll try some dirty trick for an October surprise and some people will be naive enough to fall for it. I',m not say I don't think Obama will win, because he will. just that I'm not going to be cocky about it.
