Talk some sense into me.

We have two 13 y/o male cats, litter mates although they no longer care all that much for each other. I lost my 20 y/o cat last year, the day after my last radiation treatment.

There's a bonded pair of cats at our local rescue, they're male/female litter mates about 2 1/2 years old.

Bad idea, right?

I keep going back to their pics, knowing they're both older and have to go as a pair and thinking we could give them a good home.

edg3: I had two rescue cats born about the same time but adopted as rescues about a year apart. While they have never been close friends they do get along with an occasional spat. My DH teases that he is so glad I got him a cat because the female is his lap ornament while the male is definitely mine. Skip ahead a few years and my DD, who is cat sitting while we are on vacation, brings home a foundling kitten that she is going to rehome. The kitten was sequestered in our powder room and when I asked why the door was closed (no one using it) she revealed that it was homing this foundling. She did not look further than me for rehoming. Well, we all know how that story ended, I am now the owner of 3 cats. The kitten has invigorated the elders and she bedevils them but they ahve adjusted well. She's been here for 2 years now so all worked out well.

I would say if you have it in your heart to give them a good home, go for it. It may take them awhile to assimilate with your current two but all cats deserve a loving home. Since when do cat owners profess to have sense? LOL

I say go for it. Some may only want to adopt a single and if you have the space and patience for 2 more, go get them. Shelters are traumatic for any animal. Go get ‘em.

edj3 - my husband only wanted two cats but I saw a runt calico at the pet store a few years ago and took my kids to see it and I, too, decided if cat was still there after our Labor Day trip, I would take her. And so tiny cat is here. Adopted without my husband knowing until I told him we had to drive to the pet store togo get her

(This one never gets old for me) Don't look at me to tell you not to offer a home to more cats...If I was not married with kids I would definitely be the person in the picture. (As it is I have to let DH and DKs have a little houseroom )

You guys are rotten and I love you all.

I would dearly love to have a Bengal but I'm 95% sure a cat with that much energy would not be welcome by my two older boys. But that bonded pair are 2 years old and have each other so that if Wally & Eddie are little shits it should be OK.

We had just adopted a kitten and then a stray cat showed up in the neighborhood. She loved to play with my children when they were outside. My DH was adamant about only having one cat but this new kitten became seriously ill right after we adopted it. I reminded him the children had already lost a dog and a cat in a relatively short period of time and now this one seemed to be leaving us as well. So he finally said that if the cat was still around (meaning the next day), I could bring it in. Now mind you this was at 11 PM, so flashlight in hand I roamed the neighborhood calling for her until she came. She mothered the dying kitten until he died and then grieved for him every night for weeks (until we got her another cat). She permitted my DD to dress her up in doll clothes, to be pushed in a doll stroller and lived to be the ripe old age of 19. So who says you can have too many cats?

Why wait to see if they are still there? There is a reason why you singled them out.

I emailed the shelter hoping to get more of the back story on why those two kitties were up for adoption. They don't know, the kitties were transferred from another shelter. The girl kitty (Hailey) has had all her teeth removed as she's got stomatitis, which is an auto immune disorder aggravated by the tartar on the teeth. They said she's doing really well now. I checked with a vet friend who said if her teeth are gone, the stomatitis should be a non-issue.

So I'll talk w/ my husband and see if he's willing to meet them. I'm still a little up in the air, mostly because Wally (one of my two boy kitties) is pretty high strung, and his litter mate Eddie can be a cowardly bully. I don't want to screw up the existing cats for sure.

my very first cat, who lived pretty long, had to get all her teeth removed also. Boy she smelled better after that! And she finally gained some weight cause it didn't hurt to eat (she could even do hard food without teeth) the funniest thing though was that when you were playing with her, she'd still nip at you but it tickled instead of hurt

My poodle has had about 18 teeth removed, probably because of poor diet in his previous life. He’s a rescue. I get a small kibble for both, he doesn’t have any problems eating it.

At DDs house, the girl is shy, really has no clue how to cat. The boy picks on her constantly. He spends time in kitty jail when he’s really bad. Behind a closed door. He hates that.

We had a toothless foster cat. She insisted on eating dry food along with our cat. She ate canned also, of course. She could clamp her jaws hard enough to make her hard to pill.

Good morning, cat lovers. My old calico, Miss Felix, has her front teeth, but not the back. She no problem eating dry food.

awe betrayal, such a sweet story. Edj, good luck and keep us posted. Lily needs a couple teeth pulled. She's a bit overweight so trying to get her to drop a little weight before anesthesia. She prefers sunbathing to exercise
