Am literally waiting for SOFT trial results with baited breath. Had partial first dose of CMF on Friday and had allergic reaction to 5FU. (Never got the cyclophosphamide) Last night had acute pelvic pain and was in urgent care with what looks like ruptured ovarian cyst--I see there are 4 reported cases to the FDA following Methotrexate. I have oncotype of 20 and was ambivalent at best towards chemo as it looks like 95% or greater chance that it would not change anything about my outcome. Now with rare allergy and possibly incredibly rare side effect, I feel my body is saying NO NO NO. Have second opinion with another MO on Thursday and she agreed that San Antonio is incredibly timely for me.

"A new combination of cancer drugs" [bortezomib and fulvestrant ] "delayed disease progression for patients with hormone-receptor-positive metastatic breast cancer, according to a multi-center phase II trial. The findings of the randomized study (S6-03) were presented at the 2014 San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium, held Dec. 6-9, by Dr. Kerin Adelson, assistant professor of medical oncology at Yale Cancer Center and chief quality officer at Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven."

"Male breast cancer is different"
"One important difference is in the rates of survival. The study found that while survival for men with breast cancer has improved, it hasn't kept pace with the strides made in treating breast cancer in women."
"Although we saw a significant improvement in overall survival for male breast cancer patientsover time, the prognosis for men with breast cancer has not been improving as much as for women with the disease," Dr. Fatima Cardoso, director of the breast unit at the Champalimaud Cancer Center in Lisbon, Portugal, said in a news release from the American Association for Cancer Research.
"This is largely because male breast cancer is a rare disease—it accounts for just 1 percent of breast cancers—and we know very little about its biology and how best to treat patients," Cardoso said....................
..............."Cardoso is due to present the findings Dec. 9 at the 2014 San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium. The symposium is a partnership of the University of Texas Health Science Center, the American Association for Cancer Research and Baylor College of Medicine."........

Soft trial results today........yippie.........its 5:53 AM and i'am wide awake...........cant wait for your post on the SOFT trial voracious!!!!!!! -
So it sounds like there is a benefit specifically for those who have had chemo and remained premenopausal? And an even bigger benefit, in that same subgroup, with an AI plus ovarian suppression vs. tamoxifen and ovarian suppression. Am I understanding it correctly? Was there any analysis done specific to those premenopausal early stagers that did NOT get chemo? Thanks for your insights!
-
Hi Nan, where did you read about/see these results? Can you please point me to it?
-
The announcement was planned for 11:15....followed by discussion and then break for lunch at 1pm.... Should be hearing results shortly.
I'm a little disappointed this year with the lack of press releases coming directly from SABCS...
I'm going into a lecture now...so if anyone see the results sooner...please post
-
Does this link work? Got it from a NEJM tweet by searching 'SABCS' tweets. Just read the whole publication and they do look at those who did not get chemo too...
-
Isn't the TAILOR (I think that's what it's called) trial results also supposed to be released? That specifically was for premenopausal women who didn't have chemo I believe.
I'm anxiously awaiting the full report from the SOFT trial myself. Thanks VR for keeping us updated!

-
yes it does, thanks Nan! Hmm, looks like I may have a possible treatment change decision to make. 78% (tamox alone) "freedom from breast cancer" at 5 years vs 85.7% (for AI and ovarian suppression) for premenopausal/prior chemo is reasonable difference, I think.
Edited to add "premenopausal" for clarity
-
Sounds to me like the addition of ovarian suppression really did not make a statistically significant difference in patients who already had favorable enough prognostic features as to not warrant chemotherapy. The benefit was seen in the younger women who had prognostic features that warranted chemotherapy, and who were presumably young enough that they were still premenopausal after chemotherapy. That's where it had benefit. And in those women, the benefit was greatest with AI and OS.
-
Okay ...so now I am mad that I was put on chemical castration drugs for 18 months for a limited benefit ......( the no chemo group )
( am I reading this right )
Guess I am going to skip my last two shots !!!!!!!
-
I'm waiting for a more nuanced interpretation.
-
I agree with Fourminor's statement above regarding the SOFT trial results.
Not exactly a game changer for our situation, but certainly others will find this info useful.
I wouldn't jump to any conclusions though. It's best to let your oncologist decipher the data.

Sorrento Therapeutics (Ticker: SRNE) is trending up over 10% in the market today.
They are working on MYC inhibitor, KJ-Pyr-9, a Tumor Stopping Molecule. No clue what any of that is, but they must have reported some good news at the conference. -
Quote from the ASCO report provided above"Looking at the cohort of women who did not receive chemotherapy (average age, 46 years), they did well in all three study arms. Five-year event-free survival was 95.8% with tamoxifen alone, 95.1% with tamoxifen plus ovarian suppression, and 97.1% with exemestane plus ovarian suppression."“In this older group of women who did not have chemotherapy, there is no reason to add ovarian suppression. The average age is 46 years, and some of these women will go into menopause soon,” Dr. Francis said.
Based on this , is anybody else in this category and age group going to stop their Zoladex injections ???
Cant wait to chat with my MO.

Just had a minute to look for Sorrento Therapeutics. Cannot vouch for any accuracy but does mention SA Breast Conference. Found others from biz sites but this is from company itself.

@pooh...
Yup, I read that too.
Are you a participant in the SOFT trial?
If so, you might want to pose your questions in the SOFT/TEXT trial thread for better responses.@goats...
Actually Sorrento Therapeutics (NASDAQ: SRNE) popped up ~24% today on double the average daily volume. Not a massive move that would represent a cancer breakthrough, but respectable for one day. Still... I can't find the news of what was announced at the symposium.
