Lisa, he's a beaut! Curve, you're right about that, much to my great disappointment ;-)
-
I saw this little guy hiding in the hibiscus bush..
-
Cora, I meant to tell you how much I liked the pix of the shore birds...great shots...
-
Saw this guy this morning on my walk, wonder what he sees under his wing.
-
What a cute photo! Do you always take a camera when going for a walk?
-
Just about!
-
Daughter always takes a camera when hiking in the woods.
-
SoCalLisa, I love your pics. That last one is so funny. Showed it to my husband, who said, "It's the yellow feet that really complete it."
-
It is fun to watch the birds' morning ablutions..
-
SoCalLisa, I love that word 'ablutions'....going to use it in a sentence today...to my son, I drive him crazy sometimes using old fashioned words and phrases. He accused me once of making up the word 'kibosh'.
Back to the birds...I just wanted to say that I have so enjoyed looking at all the pictures you ladies have been posting. Its a beautiful bird world out there! Have a lovely day everyone.

I'm heading to the gulf coast in a couple of weeks. I'm anxious to see my favorite pelicans and other shorebirds. Last year I got lucky and saw a large flock of roseate spoonbills along with some ibises and black crowned night herons. The spoonbills startled and took off in a giant pink cloud (but came right back). Took my breath away. We also see sandhill cranes and the occasional Whooper.
-
auntienance-here are some night herons
Juvenile night heron
another juvenile
adult night heron at the local slough
Spoonbills & ibises, I'd love to see. Have fun on your trip to the gulf!!
ETA: these are Black-crowned Night Herons
-
Do you think this is a night her
on..the coloring is different from yours..?
-
oops guess not..looks like a green-backed heron
took this one near where the blue heron hangs out
-
How about this one...it was kind
a far away with my old old camera
-
SoCal- The first bird you posted is a Green Heron. The 2nd bird you posted is indeed a Black-crowned Night Heron. Since you live so close to Baja, maybe you also get the Yellow-crowned Night Heron? There was one a couple of years ago at the "slough", unfortunately I only read about it & never saw it.
-
I will have to keep an eye open for that
-
Lisa's yellow footed bird is a snowy egret... At least on the east coast. Beautiful pictures.

Gosh I'm so jealous. I might (wish me luck ladies) try to get DH out to the nearest state park for a bird tour. I don't think its something I would try by myself. But the Nature Center in Fort Worth does have some birding and can get there in about 25 minutes. DD went to nature camp there 15 years or so ago. Something to look forward to. I've seen the house finch again, but I will have to get out bird book to identify female. I think I misspoke and called it a house "sparrow". Mostly just English sparrows, goldfinches, an occas. dove and the usual crows and blue jays. The black birds seem to have gone elsewhere. No robins or meadowlarks.
Winter has left the building. The FW Stock Show (used to be the "Fat" Stock Show but fat is not politically correct nor is it good for marketing HA HA) usually has at least one episode of sleet/ice during its run. I'm thinking it should be just about over; it started Jan 18. Not a thing like that and no evidence in the long range forecast. But weatherman did say he'd seen in snow in April here. Don't remember that (but he has been around forever to my best recollection). There was a TOAD on the porch last night. I do see them unhibernate (if that's not a word it should be) themselves and then rehibernate, or at least not be on my porch. That is one of my favorite things about living in the country. We had a little green frog that spent most of the summer on my houseplants. Don't see them too often up in the yard.
-
Cora, where is your slough?
Luv, you should be on some birds' migratory paths? No?
Hi PJ -
We have gray tree frogs and green as well. We have found green ones under toilet seats on three occasions and one fell in my hair once as I was coming in the door. It was so small it was difficult to get out without hurting it (hair was much longer then.) I had one that hitched a ride in on the houseplants and lived the whole winter inside. Nearly gave me a heart attack when I was watering one day. Last year we had a gray one in the kitchen. We finally figured out he was living in the watering can spout and came in when we brought it in. good thing I think they're cute!
-
This is a photo of a northern shrike taken from on-line.
Unlike most other winter birds, the northern shrike is generally solitary. Shrikes often impale their prey on thorns or barbed-wire fences, returning to eat their meals later.
I remember years ago, Gram and I, watching a shrike terrorizing any creatures that came near the bird feeders.
-
Anyone know what this one is???
I don't
-
SoCal-It might be a western kingbird http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Western_Kingbird/id looks like he has some yellow on his underside. I originally thought maybe a Says Pheobe, some of them have light colored heads but their wings aren't this dark. Anybody else want to guess?(I'm assuming you took this pic in California, because knowing that will narrow things down).
Teka- those shikes are mean!! How can such a cute bird be such a terror? We get them in the winter both the northern shrike & the loggerhead shrike. I guess not all shikes migrate in the winter.
-
?. i
Actually, I took it in Montana at Glacier NP, I just had never seen one
-
I just wish I had known I would get into birds..on our many, many trips, I would have seen so many more,,well shucks
-
Clark's nutcracker maybe? It's a little hard to tell.
-
-

-
