SoCal-Nice duck shots! I've been stalking the buffleheads & mergansers, trying to get a shot(pic I mean). I've never seen a wood duck or the northern pintail that you posted. I have some duck pics I've taken in the past. They are on an external hard drive & I forgot where I put it   Love your photos!!

When I am at our little lake that seems to be a stopping off point for birds going north and south, I just see a color that is not like the others with my eye, then train my zoom lens on it to try to get a better read..but then again, I don't know much about the birds I capture with the camera..just that I like them

also, some of the duck types spend so much time underwater, it is hard to get them standing still..

Cora, I am like you I have a cazillion photos on hard drives and can't find stuff..I guess I should label them so I could do a search...

Wish I had know that before...lol

SoCal-yep, a male bufflehead & a merganzer. 2 of my favorite ducks. Nice pics. Here's a duck called(what else?) a redhead. He spent the winter at our nearby lake a couple years in a row. But haven't seen him lately.

Hi Everyone,

Lovely photos!!

Teka, is an indoor cat that loves to watch the birds at the feeders.

I noticed earlier in the month a house wren at the suet feeders that maybe was able to migrate before the severe cold snap in the North Country.

I depend on Daughter to take and post photos.

SoCal-I think the gull is a "laughing gull" http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Laughing_Gull/id    I've never seen one myself. Maybe someone else familiar with this bird will chime in......

ETA-the sandpipers are hard for me to keep straight. Knowing the size really helps with ID-ing them. Very cute pic tho!!

Laughing gulls are common on the gulf coast. Once you see one you can't mistake it. Their "laugh" is distinctive.

Coraleliz - you might want to try a heated bird bath.  I have one,  it heats the water to about 35 degrees.  I have read you can actually attract as many birds with water in the winter than with seed.

Today my husband taught me how to use the camera, and I got this photo of a White-breasted Nuthatch.   Tomorrow, I'll try to get a photo of the Red-breasted Nuthatch.   Daughter posted the photo!
