wenweb, we're glad you've found the other route to your Faves.

We'll keep your input on the tech list, thanks! image

Musical, we have a growing list of additional emoticons to be bought or designed (and you're right about those copyright and licensing realities).

ruthbru, hope you find that nice, normal happy face somewhere until ours is ready! image

Thanks Mods, OK so now Im curious. I'll have to go exploring on the web and see what I can see. Especially about copyrights.

May I ask again if we are able to upload .gif files? ...they are TINY, like about between 2 and 20kbs. Im sure you know what they are but just in case...they are typically wee movie emoticons such as Curveballs angry one.

    Testing, but not really angry.

Okay, that's three different ways to add curveball's smokin' emoticon.

1, Dragged from my desktop. 2. Using the Upload option from Insert Image. 3. Using the Link option after uploading to Photobucket.

Although 1 and 3 are animated in Edit view, only the Link approach maintained the animation on the thread, at least for me.

Thanks Mods for taking the time to respond with this. I thought it would be the case that we couldn't upload a .gif from HD, but it's interesting you say you got it to load in edit view for 1/ and 3. What happened to option 1 after that? Oh and what about preview mode? Any "movie" there?

This is how Im seeing your post. Nothing after 1/ ... is that how it's supposed to look?

That's right, Musical. Although the flaming frown appeared in Edit view, behind the number 1, it's just a blank space when posted to the boards. The animation only appears with 3.

@Musical, I just used copy & paste. I was really kind of surprised that the angry face remained visible, and even moreso that the animation still worked.

@ruthbru, the red face & flames could represent a hot flash but the scowl doesn't seem to fit for a hot flash. If I knew how to create a smiley I would make you one just for hot flashes, with a red face, no scowl, flames, and an animated fan.

Now it's time for an experiment. I googled public domain smileys and found a website that gives links and two kinds of code for a huge assortment of emoticons. They offer three options for each one: forum coding, HMTL, and a link to the image at their website. I tried the two coding options and they don't show up on the preview, but using this forum's "insert image" button works just fine.

Here's one we all wish we had!

Wow, that was strange! The first time I submitted this post it went straight to a "Removed by the Community" flag. I thought maybe the image link to an outside site was the culprit, so I backed up, deleted the image link, and re-submitted. No problem. I went back and edited the comment, and now the image link works just fine.

    Even stranger--now there's a duplicate comment! I'll delete it.

No, I won't. There's no edit|delete link at the bottom of the first one. Mods, please delete it for me.

Thanks Mods. Well I've been doing some digging.... and carefully looking at policies, copyrights etc... this is the best Ive come up with so far. Heres some of their copyright notice...(bold mine)

QUOTE: Free smileys copyright notice Apart from the various sources listed here, all the smileys found on this site were found in the public domain, i.e other internet forums and are assumed to be in the public domain or intended for use by the public. I watch my logs and locate the forums where people hotlink to my smileys, where I often find smileys that have not previously been added to this archive. This means I have no way to determine actual ownership of any particular smiley. With the exception of the following: .... UNQUOTE

hxxp://www.freesmileys.org/copyright.php (change the x's to tt if you want to follow this link)

Heres some copy and pastes :-)

Curveball if its the same site I went to...I didn't like their privacy policy like logging your ip etc. They say they don't know who you are then turn around and log your ip! WHAT. Smiley Yeah right.

@Musical, it is the same site and I didn't even notice the link to the privacy policy, let alone read it.

Well as for smiley central ... I see they havent changed from their toolbar stunt which is why I ditched them years ago.... their eula and various other policies would be enough to give anyone nightmares with a minefield of possibilities plus a serious case of info overload .... yet here on the main page they say "absolutely free"

    image

Great spam one! it was on the same site I copied mine off. Obviously the public domain ones are in various places.

Mods, that was weird. Just tried posting and when I submitted, it immediately said post was deleted by community. So I tried again and same, but this time I was able to delete the post. I posted a little screenshot of a sites policy.

    UPDATE: Now it is showing.

Sorry about that, Musical! Our new anti-spam tool seems to be over-reacting to some of these posts, and temporarily deleted yours, pending a Mod review. We've reversed its action, and your post is back, with no negative impact.

WOW Mods you mustve been quick coz it only said "removed by the community" for a very brief time, (less than 2mins???) before it appeared.

Anyway, no worries... teething problems will be teething problems.

One thing I did notice today when I 1st came on the site was all the pages loaded VERY SLOWLY. (thought I was having flashbacks of dialup days) Seems to be OK ATM though.

Sounds like Musical had exactly the same problem. Maybe the software just doesn't like that site for some reason. I tried to put a picture from a public domain clip art site in this post

    image

but it didn't work. If it had you'd have seen the Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland between "post" and "but".

    Mad Hatter 1 clip art

However, if I just copy & paste the picture, it appears on the forum. And I got no "removed by the community" message this time.

Perhaps this has been covered in past pages.........but is there a way to mark favorites that I want to delete (many at a time) and then just once hit "delete all"?

gentianviolet, there isn't a way to select many favorites at once and hit "delete all" but if you open My Favorite Topics from the blue navigation menu you can pretty quickly work through the list and click the Remove from My Favorite Topics link beside each one you no longer want to follow.

If you want to limit the number of emails you get with new posts on your Faves, you can just click the Remove email notification link and follow them when you want to, without the emails.

Thanks, Mods, for the quick response. I was aware of how to do it individually but now wonder if a "delete all" will ever be available? I do realize it would be far down on your "to do" list if at all.

    something for the wish list:

Cleaning up my PM's. Deleting SENT messages, I like to read them before I delete. Would be nice to see also see something like RETURN TO SENT MSGS (along with RETURN TO INBOX). Or, is there a way I don't have to go back thru the process to delete messages individually?

    Thanks"
