INSOMNIACS place to talk in the wee hours

If you can find a stronger crate it should be safer. I have had dogs and cats in my life and have had a few close calls with the panicked pets entrapped in collars and various. I a cat who got all wound up in the loose threads on the side of a door mat. He flipped himself over and over and when I came in he appeared lifeless with the threads having formed a cord. I quick cut the cord off and ran to the vets with him. The vet gave him steroids saying this sort of trauma can be really serious. I never bought carpet remnants again, if it isn't a bound edge I leave it alone.
You might want to google "safe crates" I know I bought from a crate company in Northern Indiana. We had two different Goldens that had issues with storms, one would lock herself inside the bathroom and then try to dig her way out, the other would do the same but also try to dig through the wall. This was before thunder shirts. I did figure out to wrap the dog in a towel and just hold them.
The cat in question is still with us, he is 18 years old now, a Maine Coon but not so big looking any longer. He is mad at me just now because we moved last week, he hasn't come to sit in my lap since we moved. I am trying to lure him, he like macaroni and cheese. I will win him over soon.

Loverly would another dog as a companion , reduce her anxiety? I know having two dogs is more work.
Sensi wish I was there taking in that view.

Miss Sassypants -
Thank you for those sweet words. I thought BC would change my life, but the Traumatic Brain Injury was a total game changer. I think back to how bad off I was those first few months (wheelchair, then walker, then cane; unable to carry on a conversation; not recognizing everyday objects) and realize how blessed I really am. I'd be happy to help out however you need me to. I have some real processing deficits, but I seem to be adapting fairly well as long as I give myself permission to be different. Just don't talk too fast to me!
Also, the "Universal Precautions" are just a way of life for us. I guess you could also call us "Germaphobes".... but neither DH or I have gotten sick like we used to in the past. (Which is good; his immune cells won't be fully regenerated until August.)
Why don't you PM me and explain further?
xoxo

Blessings, hope DH continues to do well. Wow, four months is a long time to be in a bubble.
Forward and Ms. Ginger, Mitzy can sleep through the thunderstorm, but is afraid of strollers, little children, and loud people. We got her about 6 months ago from the SPCA. It took her nearly half an hour before she would come to us. At the shelter, she would sit in the corner either on the cot or wedged between the wall and the metal water container starring at passerby. She would not come to anybody because she was so frighten. Apparently, she was not socialized by her previous owner(s) who surrendered her. We could tell that she missed them. Wouldn't eat for nearly three days and was really depressed. I tried to hand feed her by the third day. She did take the food from my hand , but wouldn't eat the food if it was in the bowl. Really weird. Had to train her to eat from the bowl as she kept on taking a mouthful of food and drop it on the floor first before eating it.
She is a pretty smart girl. Too smart for her own good sometimes. She has really bad separation anxiety. I had to put her on Prozac. I didn't want her to be on it too long so I took her off of it after one month. Unfortunately, the anxiety is back. Need to start her back on it before DH leaves for Nepal in two weeks Sobthat is the story of my neurotic dog.
Forward, Ms. Sas mentioned getting another dog a few months back. Not sure where to fin one that will help Mitzy.

Hi Lover - Happy Easter to you and your family. I am a cat lover and admire the grace, poise and serenity of cats. They are good role models, conserve energy until it is needed, marvellous mothers, who also know exactly when to let go, and they will not stay in a bad situation etc. There is a lot about cats that is also good for women. Skip the eating mice bit. A friend once commented on how when I talked about cats I took on the grace of the feline. Unfortunately I do not spend enough time doing this.

Hi Forward, how is renovation coming along?
-
The reno is going well, we keep adding more to it. I took all my electric appliances down to the basement , the only downside is I don't have a sink downstairs.

Loverly. How funny. Is it a video for America's funniest home videos ?

Wishing a Happy Easter to all the Owlettes! I've followed this board since last summer and am so thankful for the wisdom y'all have shared. I've learned so much here ~ most importantly Chevyboy's expert advice "leave enough room to fall" !
Prior to my suprise dx of stage iv breast to bone cancer I was a professional dog trainer with my own small business. I keep my license and certifications current hoping to one day be able to return to my "doggie work".
Loveroflife - you have done such wonders with Mitzy! Most Shepherds with her sad past would not have been able to adjust at all to life with a family. She is a special girl! Shepherds do have problems with properly metabilizing nutrients from their food. This leads to some of the skin problems they can have. Prozyme works wonders. It is an enzyme supplement in powder form that is mixed in with your dog's regular food. Your local pet store should have it. Amazon sells it as well. Dog food brands can be as touchy a subject as politics or religion.....I shall tread lightly and say that Eagle Pack Power Adult dry dog food has been what I've fed my German Shepherd for the past 12 years. It meets her need for higher protein and calories. Easy on her tummy and good for her skin and joints. And as you can see in my avatar, kitty approved :-)
JazzyJuneBug - My parents divorced when I was very young and my "father" was not a great parent/person. I only saw him sporatically during my childhood. The last time I saw him I was 22. He contacted me out of the blue on my 50th birthday five months ago. Very unexpected, no contact of any sort for almost 30 years. I don't know if I have any half siblings. I found your research into your father's past interesting. Have you decided on whether or not to contact your half sister? My mother also has very strong, negative feelings about my "father" ~ I guess I do too. I admire your tenacity in finding all your info and wish you a positive outcome whatever your decision.
Sas-Schatzi - Love all your glass pics! I am amazed at how you can examine each design and determine exactly when/where it was made. My husband and I are both "junkers"....well, he's a junker, I'm a treasure finder. Any trip we've ever taken has been preplanned to include new and favorite shops. Orlando and St. Petersburg have the BEST places. My husband's fave is Webster for the giant flea market on Monday mornings. Always great finds!
Hoping to come back and "play" if I may ...........
:-)

Forward and Lover.....I had a great time, even though I've been fighting allergies/cold? Took lots of pictures
-
Lover: this hair thing! I got 'peremptory challenged' right out of the jury box last Tuesday, and Certain Husband said, with an absolutely straight face, "It was because of your hair." Hmph.
-
Hahahahaha....so was it the defense or prosecuting attorney who dismissed you?
Sensi, good you were able to get away. Tahoe is so beautiful. Did you by chance hike or ski? With the wet weather we were given, I bet the snow cap mountains wer majestic.
-
Shepkitty, WELCOME! Thank you for your kind suggestions. So you are kind of like a female version of the dog whisperer Cesar Millan? Hah! Too bad you live so far away. I can't believe you had been lurking for so long. I guess I can't really play a joke on you then Talk about lurking....,hello Eeyore, Mema, HiHo (have not seen you for a long time), and I know I am forgetting someone...well you know who you are. Hug
-
Welcome ShepKitty!

Lover, thanks for the shoot out.
To all my friends here, I was dx about 3 weeks ago with innumerable liver mets. I had one tx of Taxatere 2 weeks ago. Nasty stuff. My hair is ready to be shaved, falling out, scalp hurts.
Susan & Patty, my admiration for you both has always been there, but after the last 3 weeks it has grown. You both have been fantastic role models. Thanks for that.
Happy B-day Jazzy.....

Nice to see you here Shepkitty, we do love our animals. I have a question, my dog is fifteen and he wants to go for walks, but will only walk a few blocks and then turns around to go home, or I should say digs his feet in. He has a partial torn ligament now, but once it heals I would like him to get more exercise. Is it just aging?
Gingerbrew hope you are all moved in and feeling better
-
Oh Hiho
-
Holeinone sorry to hear you news
-
Thank you for the welcomes Loveroflife, Ginger and Lookforward!
Loveroflife, your "Mitzy pictures" were priceless ~ you could post them again and I could pretend they are really her ☺
Lookforward, 15 and able to walk blocks? Wow! My old girl and I are lucky to make it to the end of our short street and back! Age will certainly slow him down and the partially torn ligament would cause some discomfort. Is your guy on any meds for pain or inflammation? Ester-C is a really good natural supplement for inflammation. Swimming is the best PT if you have a place to take him. As his ligament heals I would hope your walks will become longer. Your pup is wise to realize his limitations!
Holeinone, sending thoughts of healing and comfort to you.
-
Holeinone. So sorry.
-
Lover: dismissed by the prosecuting attorney (our best bet was 'too educated")
Shepkitty: welcome to the refuge
Holeinone: Oh bleep. Keep us posted.
