so, our front lawn (dirt) now. I guess now is a good time to maybe not put a lawn back in because of the drought. Wasn't expecting it to be so large.

Or my Grandma just used to boil a pot of water, throw in coffee-grounds, and simmer for a minute... then a shot of cold water would make the grounds sink to the bottom... THAT was the best tasting coffee!

We had one just like this, when we would go camping!

Yes, those all look familiar. My aunt had a toaster where you had to push the side down and turn the toast over to cook on the other side. She was a pro with it.

What am I? The oldest one here? Yes, we had one of those toasters... when you opened the "door" the toast flipped over, then you toasted the other side!

My Grandma had one of these.... You just set it over the flame, and it toasted your bread... You could "toast" 4 slices at a time!

Yes, Susan. Mine think I am smart too. Hahaha. They were surprised when I told them I was placed in Special Ed class when I first started school here in the States (5th grade). The only time I was with the "normal kids" was during math lessons- the only time I felt smart because I already knew what was taught. Few English words I knew were hello, hi, hamburger, and hotdog.

Those are neat toasters. Brougth back the memory of the coal iron and stove. I still remember how my Grand Auntie made popcorn. She would put the corn kernelsin the wok-like pan filled with sand and placed it over the coal stove. She also let me try ironing-- it was the first and last time. Don't remember whose garment I created several holes

Loverly, Did she put the popcorn on top of the sand? How did you get the sand out?

Chevy, We may be the oldest on this thread, but you're only older by a couple of years, I think.

Chevy I must be old enough because in my Great Grandparents cabin (on the river above Grailing in Michigan), they had a toaster just like that silver one! Flip open the door and flip - yummy! Coffee was always in a percolator, no drip. Smarty wow that hurts losing such a gorgeous tree. You could call the ag extention about a water sipping replacement. Crape Myrtles are lovely. Good luck.

Well the pain from the radiation to my bone mets has kicked in.. aching and sore skin-tight feeling. So I am laying low. After all last week flattened with the sciatic pain which finally let up -yay. I just feel like my hips and legs are weak. We watched this PBS review on an A Capella group I never heard of called Pentatonix. I liked their sound so much I bought a bunch of I-tunes. I am happy to lay here and listen away - Na Na Na, Misbehavin... wow. Happy peppy music. It's mind blowing to me that 5 people could make all those sounds with just their voices, such talent! Thank goodness for music and my double sunny window. The skies are blue, bright sun and ever parade of fluffy white clouds - plus the last of the liquid amber leaves are yellow and the Oaks red.. nice. Oh and the cats are all sacked out here with me. We are making do in cancerland.

Rose- I am sorry to hear you are hurting from the rads. I am glad that you found something enjoyable on TV.

And with the description of the a capella group, Pentatonix, I found myself intrigued and YouTubed them. They are SO GOOD and also from Arlington, TX where I lived during my grad school days. They have some great sing off stuff on YouTube, should you be interested in that! Thanks for sharing that!

🎶Here I come to save the day🎶 Not my bedtime yet. Actually, DD is driving home from swim practice as I am typing. Trying hard to distract myself from my nervousness. She got her driver license about 2 months ago, but it is so hard to let her have more freedom.

Ms. Wren, the Great Auntie would put the kernels on top of the sand. Amazingly, somehow the sand didn't stick to the popcorn. My favorite was coal roasted cashew nuts. The fragrance was heavenly. Have you ladies seen the fruits?

    image

    Ripe fruits

Yes, the fruits are edible. Tastetangy sweet. Don't laugh, but what do the fruits remind you of?

Rose, hope it gets better soon.

It's almost 10 here and I'm out. The only thing wrong with that is I'll be up too d#%> early.

Smaarty, that is quite a large area left. I think Glennie's xeriscaping idea might be something to look into.

All of these ancient household appliances are unfamiliar to me, except for the flatiron. I only recognize that one because my grandma had some in her basement, not because I ever used one.

Rose, I'm sorry you've been flattened so much by pain lately. It's good you have your kitties to keep you company. I'm checking out the Pentatonix videos on YouTube right now.

Loverly, I've never seen those fruit before. I had no idea cashews looked like that. They look like upside down red bell peppers pooping a cashew to me. Or a cartoon mushroom? Something the smurfs would live under?

Did DD get home from swim practice OK?

Jazzy- I am so glad you liked Pentatonix too! They are so talented. I even bought some items from their xmas album- 'Mary Did you Know" is lovely. Texas and especially the folks arount Austin (Austin City Limits) have produced so many wonderful muscians. I had never heard of this group but DH and I love all kinds of music and pretty much appreciate everything, so we sat up and took notice when they did a review on PBS. Seriously our canary loves Jazz and Blues! You turn it on and the little bugger sings and twitters - hilarious. Rockin robin!

Herceptin tomorrow and I will ask about the rads and pain. I was told to expect it.. they didn't fib. Hope it's temporary. We will see what MO has to say about elevated alkphos and liver enzymes. My PCP ran labs for me. Sleep tight ya'll. Hi Patty hope you are well and staying out of the hospital.

Cubbie-- hahaha "Upside down red peppers pooping a cashew or a house where smurfs live!" Wonderful description - chuckling big time. I didn't know cashews looked like that either. This place cracks me up. I learn something whenever I browse through here - so many folks from all over and sharing what they do, where they live and all their experiences. Thanks for the sympathy and making me laugh. (((Hugs)))

Cubbie, good one hahaha. Yes, daughter got home safely. Thank you. Susan is probably snoring along with the other Insomniacs. I don't have insomnia, but I think I am the only one up...how ironic.

Rose, again, best wishes on the infusion tomorrow. May those nasty cells hibernate for awhile. Good night

Rose- Austin is an incredible place for music, so many great music festivals. I went to the South By Southwest festival in 2012, and there was a choice of over 5000 music acts to see. How do you choose? We went for some of the bigger names from the music awards that featured Christopher Cross, Bruce Springsteen, and then went to see Dr. John somewhere else. I discovered some other amazing musicians along the way. Austin City Limits is on my bucket list too.

Hoping your herceptin treatment goes okay today and that the pain the shoulder goes away. Are they giving you enough pain meds Rose to deal with all this?

Okay, my mind is stuck.... THIS was my Grandma's iron, before she got an actual steam iron!

    image

    They had a coal-stove

Wood Cookstove Cooking. We are installing our wood burning stove very soon and I am SO excited to come across this blog!:

And when she would iron, she would just set the iron on top of the hot stove, and oh! It had a "plate" you could set it on ..

    image

    on the ironing board...

The ironing boards were wooden... and you had padding to go on top, then covered with an ironing board cover...

    image

And that is your morning tutorial of IRONING! Hah! Does anyone ever iron anymore except me?

My grandma had all of those things, she had a wood burning stove in the kitchen. Was black, may have been iron. After electric came to their area, my dad got her an electric range. She wouldn't use it, said it didn't cook as well. She made the best biscuits on that wood burner!

This is one of her flat irons. Makes a great door stop now. And nobody irons any more!!
