So...whats for dinner?

Stable TMs is a good thing, Deb! You can get copies of the reports after the wedding festivities.
Carole - I'm going to test drive a bike, hopefully next week. Not sure I can go very far, but it might actually help my knees. I still am in awe that DH actually did the 20 miles. When he told me two weeks ago that he was going to ride with the kids on Saturday, I was afraid he might hurt himself. But now I think he'll be OK. Our friends (and his best golf buddy from Missouri) are meeting up with us in Vermont this weekend and the guys will be playing golf. I don't want him to injure himself so he can't play.
-
Moonflowr- Hope you get your energy back soon and feel better!
Deb- Glad your tumor markers are good.
Michelle- Woo-Hoo on DH riding 20 miles that is awesome he is doing the cancer run. He must be very fit
-
Debbie - actually, he's been a major couch potato except for golfing - using a cart, of course. This is a man who seems to have turned over a new leaf...or finally living up to the agreement we made when I agreed to fight this BC with all my might. I told him I wasn't putting up this battle to have him die of a heart attack because he didn't take care of himself. I am beyond thrilled to see him on that bike!
-
Michelle, you sure your DH didn't collapse on the couch when you weren't looking? Just wondering because once upon a time, my DH and a friend rode their bikes to and from work, over 15 miles each way. When they first started, my DH would come in, collapse on the couch and not move for an hour. He would say,"I don't know how John can do it, when we got to the point where we separate to go to our homes, he was peddling away like he just started. But I am beat." This happened three days in a row. On the third day, I called John's wife and said, "ok, tell me the truth, what is John doing", and she said, " he is collapsed on the couch like the last three days. " turns out that when they were with each other they powered through it so as not to lose face, and as soon as they were out of sight of each other, barely dragged themselves home, such macho men! LOL
-
Michelle- I think sometimes our DH's just need a gentle Push in the right direction. I really admire your husband for wanting to get healthier and be there for you. I hope and pray your tumor markers are good and so glad the chemo is not to harsh on you.
LOLmoonflowr!
-
Eric- Did you say you lived in flagstaff or maybe just visited there? Just wondering because there is a new casino there thats due to open soon called the twin arrows casino they contacted my husband for a interview and want to fly him out there. They seem pretty serious about hiring him. He has a lot of stress with his boss here and is thinking about it but I am not real keen on it. I was wondering how you like the town, is the elevation high there? I know they get lots of snow with my asthma I am not so sure its the place for me. I lived in Scottsdale, Az and went through flagstaff years ago but can't remember what it was like.
-
Good morning all, I guess if i want to watch the sun come up I have to stay awake all night and thats just what i did. Could not sleep a wink from coughing and fever. It sucks being sick when its so nice out even though its 7am and the sky looks so pretty. I just took a mild pain pill for my achyness so i am hoping it will help me sleep.
Hope everyone has a good day!
-
Michelle: Such good news on your tests! Keep doing what you're doing...glad you're going to try the low carb...it really does give more energy once you're into it and the lower glycemic index would be good for you. Good for DH taking up bike riding...the best exercise according to my son who studies nutrition and exercise. He's always trying to get me to do it and I just might.
debbie: Sounds like you have a good case of the flu. I had a milder case earlier this year and it took me about 10 days for it to run it's course. I ended up getting anti viral IV's from my ND which helped a lot. eric can give you the best advice on Flagstaff, but personally I love the town. It's north of Sedona and higher elevation, so I don't think it gets as hot in the summer. Yes, you do get snow in the winter, but it's so dry that I don't think you feel the cold as much. Worth going and taking a look see if it were me, but I'm an adventurer!
Carole: Your meals on wheels sound great! It sounds like you are having a really great vacation. I used to do that when the kids were small, but haven't gone RVing in a long time.
We're into our second day of damp rainy weather...much cooler! Frankly, it's a welcome relief. BF played golf yesterday through it all and I just took it easy at home and read my latest book. Last night we went out for asian food and watched a movie from netflix "My Week With Marilyn"...only so so. She was a very disfunctional person.
Hope everyone has a wonderful day!
-
Flagstaff is a great town, but too far from salt water for me. When I get inland more than a 100 miles I feel my webbed toes start to dry up...
. I lived in Arizona for about 8 months (a long time ago) and just had to return to the coast.
For dinner last night hubby barbecued a chicken and I cooked up some brown rice and made a salad. (We ate late, because he had forgotten that it was his turn to cook dinner, but when I tried to talk him into going out - the barbecue won the day.) We ate out on the deck and looked at the mountain. This will probably be our last summer in this house, and boy will we ever miss the deck and the view. But the upkeep - not so much. House too big -yard too big - we both want less work and responsibility, so now that housing seems to be recovering, it will hopefully be an OK time to sell.
-
Kaara- I may have to go get some antibiotics and maybe an iv for fluids I always put that stuff off because i dont like going to the er. Thanks for the info on Flagstaff I dont mind the snow really just dont like the higher elevations, thanks for the info It helps alot.
-
Michelle : so happy for you that the chemo is continuing to look after you well. Good luck with the markers. 20 miles is a pretty good bike ride in my mind and good for him too - wish him all the best for Saturday.
Apple: that sounds a lot of work for dinner - but bet it was worth it. I still don't have the energy for that yet... one day.
Moonflwr... I agree - we are a real chatty bunch. I don't think I`ll ever catch up.
deborye... love leftover spaghetti
Whereabouts in the UK you going?
Caroleh... I use my slow cooker all year round. Think it is a wonderful invention. Sounds like you are having a great vacation.
Deb: hope you feel better soon.... Take care hon.
Kaara - I saw that movie and thought the same as you.
Heres to wishing good days for everyone, with laughter and smiles and lots of memory making.
Still too early for me to think of dinner yet.

Flagstaff is more or less 7000 feet in elevation. It snows there half a dozen times times per year and the snow sticks awhile..but melts enough between storms that in town it doesn't "pile up" very much. They are good about keeping the main roads clear. It takes a big storm to get ahead of the plowing capabilities, but they catch up pretty quickly. You can expect 1 or 2 times per year that the pllw crews get behind for a few hours.
Winter time fahrenheit day/night temps typically are mid teens to low 40s. Summer time temps are mid 50s to mid 80s. The rest of the times are "mid teens to mid 80s" so bring a lot of light layers of warm stuff so you can adapt.
Except for July through mid September it's a fairly dry climate. July thru September..it rains many few afternoons for a few hours and then stops.
The town is pretty casual and comfortable clothes nearly always wins out over suits & ties.
Because it's close to Phoenix, it can be a bit busy during ski season (ski areas are yet higher in elevation and need snow making capabilities) and during the summer (when heat crazed Phoenicians are desperate).
Housing prices are higher than in Phoenix, but aren't crazy.
Eric -
Eric- Thank you for all that good information it is really helpful. I am thinking the 7000 ft elevation is a bit too high but i guess i could adapt if i had too. It's also good to hear that Flagstaff does not have the extreme heat that the phoenix and scottsdale get. Thanks!
-
i think we sound like a cooking show..
ok ... i won't mention the pantyliners.
-
Apple:
I am having pork chop with sweet corn and a potato egg salad I just made. No dessert in this house today
-
Debbie,
If you go farther east from Flagstaff, which is where the casino is located, you drop in elevation to 5000 - 5500 feet. It is still cool (maybe upper 80F temps in the summer) and snows, but not as much...and the trees give way to a high plains kind of terrain. The only thing with that is the wind blows more.
I forgot to mention. Sharon and Chris took the tent trailer up north to get out of the heat. This means Sharon is feeling well enough to do this (last chemo is Monday). I'm stuck working through the weekend, so I'm staying here.
I am just going to warm up leftovers. Cooking for one isn't as much fun...
Eric -
Geeze, Debbie, I hope you feel better soon! That stinks!
Here is a picture of my Grand-Dog going to the park in a bicycle basket. She likes it! My DD says she's too lazy to walk her. I guess she takes after me.
I'm hoping for good weekends for everyone! For dinner, Ginger Ale! I know that I am not a good cook but you all have such good ideas that I just fantasize......I eat out a few times a week, When it's hot I like to "put together stuff" instead of cook, and I'm vegetarian. I'll come up with something within a week, I promise!
-
Eric, you are right cooking for yourself isn't as much fun. its why I go out so much. Today I went to Highland House and had the whole chicken Breast with volcano sauce, and I always order grilled pineapple with it, , fresh sauteed veggies, (they have their own garden) and rice. Really good, and I have half of it for dinner tomorrow. It always looks so pretty, I should have taken a picture. Bedo, you need more than ginger ale! Hope you find something. Tazzy, I love pork chops too. Deb, hope things work for you, whereever you end up! And to all, much love.
-
The talk about pork chops has reminded me of a favorite I haven't made in a long time, nice thick pork chops floured and browned, laid on top of partially cooked scalloped potatoes and finished in the oven.
-
Eric- 5000 ft sounds a lot better. It looks like he may be flying out there next week. A little nervous about the whole thing but sometimes change is good i guess.
Glad Sharon is feeling good enough to travel. I always felt better right before my next chemo tx too.
Bedo- What a cute picture of your GD. I think you have posted some great recipes so you must be a pretty good cook! ;-)))
-
Moonflwr- Your dinner sounds yummy. What is volcano sauce?
Chabba- I just realized I used to make my pork chops like that too and had forgotton what a great idea.
Ginger ale sounds really good right now wish I had some.
Michelle- Hope all goes well with your appt tomorrow
-
Last night I met Kathyrnn from the "Calling all TNs" thread - we met at Myers & Chang in Boston near Dana Farber and we had a fabulous time. Every time I meet someone from BCO in person, it's like we've known each other for years and the conversation picks up without skipping a beat. We started with blood orange margaritas - and they were really good. Then we moved on to nasi goreng (Indonesian fried rice), sesame snap peas, and surf and turf black pepper shanghai noodles. It was all so yummy!
Moonflwr - I asked Chef Google about volcano sauce and it seems to be sour cream, salsa and jalapeno...is that close? If I lived alone, I'd probably eat popcorn for dinner 3 nights a week!
Bedo - I agree...ginger ale is no dinner. And it won't help your fatigue one bit. You need some protein, my friend! And I'm glad you were able to post that picture of Smelly Nellie - it is such a cute picture!
I bought pork chops to cook this week, but they ended up in the freezer, along with the Italian sausage. I did cut up some chicken breasts and marinate them in Italian dressing yesterday along with some cut up peppers. DH grilled them for us for lunch, and I made him a caprese salad and I had fresh corn.
Kaara - I've eaten pretty low carb for more than 10 years, and only recently threw caution to the wind. I was trying to gain a few pounds so that my plastic surgeon would have something to work with when she made my new girls. But, that's off the table and now I have about 10 pounds that I really could do without - mostly because my size 4 pants won't fit. It's incredible how quickly you can pack on pounds if you're not careful!!! In the past I would have limited my fruit because of its sugar content. But I'm just not giving up watermelon, cherries, etc. So I'm eating the fruit and not worrying about it. And if we go to dinner with friends, I'm having a few bites of dessert. Life is too short... DH went to dinner without me last night and actually ordered a small steak, salad and veggies...no bread. So I think he's committed now. He did Atkins nine years ago and lost 60 pounds, so he knows how it works.
Debbie - my appointment was Wednesday. Everything was good except my tumor markers came back at 91, not so good (normal is 38 or below). But the oncologist reminded me that I've been on Xeloda for just 1 1/2 cycles and it's too soon to tell if it's working. We don't know what my markers were on the day I started treatment, they could have been higher. I have a PET/CT scan on 8/6 and another appointment on 8/15 - I'm sure we'll re-evaluate everything at that point. I'm just keepin' on keepin' on for now!
-
Bedo you and I are in the same school of cooking, but I can accomplish it well enough to feed myself and the family.
Daughter home from NYC requested a grilled steak for dinner, so last night was grilled steak and corn on the cob.
Debbie Hope you are feeling better and get some much needed rest, either day or night.
Today the girls are taking me shopping for my birthday...now this is my expertise before cooking.
-
Carrie - enjoy shopping with your girls! And Happy Birthday! Is it today?
-
Michelle: Sorry to hear your tumor markers weren't lower, but as you say, it is early in the tx and I'm praying for more positive results for you! In the meantime, you continue to feel and look good, and that is a blessing! Enjoy the moments in time!
Rain...rain...and more rain! It's either feast or famine here in NC this summer! This is our third day of foggy, rainy, chilly weather. It was in the 60's yesterday; however, I'm not really complaining. We needed the rain and the break from the heat. The plants love it! My BF will be grumpy today because clearly he won't be able to go out and play golf in this mess...he wouldn't even be able to find the ball it's so foggy:( It's a curl up with a good book day, and maybe a movie in town later.
We were headed back to Fl for a short visit on the 21st, but I got an invitation from a girlfriend to visit her home up here with a group of friends, so I'm putting off the Fl trip until late August which is my DGD's third birthday. It will be fun to get together with just the girls and catch up on things. We'll spend a couple of days together talking and shopping in the quaint little town she lives in.
Debbie: Good luck to your DH...hope this job interview turns out to be something better for both of you. New adventure is fun! The southwest is one of my favorite parts of the country!
-
Carrie, enjoy your time with DD, and have a great birthday!
Our last day here in beach paradise ;(.......but we are going home to attend a friend's birthday party. They are serving lobsters and mussels....that will soften the blow of the return.
Debbie, hope you are feeling a lot better....and getting some ZZZZ's! Best of luck with DH's opportunity.
Michelle, sounds like you had a great rendezvous at Myers and Chang...you are a great connector!
I know what you mean about the popcorn thing. Last night we went to the premier of a very funny play in Wellfleet, "Saving Kitty". The acting was superb. Anyway, the plan was to eat here at a seafood fest the resort was offering ....DH had a very tasty looking grilled shrimp with garlic and rosemary, pilaf, and grilled veggies. I wasn't really hungry so had a health bar....but then did have an ice cream after the show...probably would have had that even if I did eat a regular dinner.Glad to hear your DH is doing well with the biking. Best of luck to him in the fundraiser!
Have a good day all..... -
hubby caught a salmon yesterday, so for dinner last night we had salmon done in the weber with spinach salad and brown rice. For desert we had blueberries and macadamia nuts.
For dinner tonight I'll make salmon and mushroom souffle with a green salad.
-
darling picture bedo.. absolutely adorable. i would love to take a doggie for a bike ride.. .. just like Dorothy and Toto too.
I am anxious to visit the Persian buffet I am going to with my bro for lunch. It smelled absolutely delicious when i checked it out the other day. they have a cooking pan that looks like a washtub and they slap the freshly pressed piece of pita dough onto it.. it bakes in just minutes.. Can't wait.
peace and love, apple - ..... Mary Magdalen

Oooh, Apple you will have a true feast with so many flavors. We recently went to a church fair of our next door neighbors who are Middle Eastern and they were cooking the bread that way. So yummy and fun to watch being prepared. I'm eager to hear what else you have. My DDIL is Persian (escaped from Iran as a 3 year old with her parents), and their food is so delicious. I like fruits and nuts which they use in a lot in their stews....and rose water in their desserts. Have a great lunch!
Off to the beach...tho we are having to pull ourselves off this deck overlooking the tip of Cape Cod....beautiful and spiritual.
Soon enough I'll be home weeding in our backyard in 90 degrees. Our fair country certainly has a lot of varied weather patterns this summer! -
Hello all - I will soon be leaving to go up to Washington DC for my first visit in the Her2+ vaccine trial. I am staying with my 24 year-old DS, so not sure what I will be eating for the next week! There are a lot of good and favorite restaurants up there so I am sure we will visit a few! Also great farmer's markets and excellent grocery stores close (Wegmans/Whole Foods/Trader Joe's) so I may also do some cooking for him and his cute GF. I have been avoiding packing but I want to just take a carry-on so I need to pack judiciously and give it sone thought!
