So...whats for dinner?

Who on here roasts brussel sprouts? Bought some fresh yesterday; probably not even 1/2#. DH loves them; I can take or leave them. Hope they don't take too long. Don't want oven on long. My thermometer on back porch in shade actually only says 92. Pretty good for us this time of year. Scattered showers around. "Pleasant" outside which for north Texas in July is GOOD!!!
OH - Kaara. Movie review just came on. Says "Ted" was #1 at box office. I never go to the movies. I think the last one I went to was a kiddie movie and DD is 25 this month. Got a gift card to Movie Tavern last year (checked and still good). I think I need to see one of these.
-
luvmygoats- You probably have started dinner by now i think your time difference is later than mine. Anyway you will have to roast them in a high oven about 400% for about 25-30 minutes. What i do is clean the outter leaves and soak in salt water for a few minutes then transfer to a sheep pan with evoo and salt and pepper turning occassionaly then i toss with some shalltos. bacon and garlic i sauted up when done. You can also just boil them then saute after done with same as above that way you dont have to turn the oven on. Hope this helps
Oh kaara wished i could go see Magic Mike i bet that was a funny site seeing only one man and women of all ages LOL!
GardenGumby- Happy Anniversary and so jealous that you went to El Gauchos yummm! They have the best food ever i wish they were closer than the 2 hours or maybe its a good thing its not it is sooo expensive but worth every dollar. Gladyou had a fun weekend.
For lunch i had some smoked salmon a friend gave us with some capers and made a sauce of yogurt and cream cheese did not have any baguels so put it on little ww bread rounds so good.
-
So I'm curious, ladies, is the El Gaucho you speak of the one that is also in Aruba (tho I suspect, unlikely since they are so far away) We never made it there, but always remember the name, and it came highly recommended.
Luvmy, could you possibly roast your brussel sprouts in the toaster oven to conserve on house heat? I would mix them with some olive oil and garlic lightly, then roast at a tolerable heat, even 375 would do, until tender. They really are great roasted! You may even decide you like them. I'll bet you can even do them on the non-direct heat side of the grill....experiment!
Funny, DH asked if I told my sistas that he had the blue egg for breakfast this AM. Yes he did! It was pretty. Consider yourselves informed....:) -
Watermelons really do explode when dropped. Yep, just dropped half a one on the kitchen floor. What a mess - I never knew that half a one, would splatter so far up the walls and cabinets
For dinner, not sure yet - DH is playing golf so I have an evening to me.
-
Tazzy - oh what a mess that must have been!
Gardengumby - what a great anniverary weekend!!!
Lacey - hope you had a great beach day. The weather here was just gorgeous. And the forecast for the whole week is perfect summer weather. I know a lot of people take this week for vacation and sometimes it can be pretty crummy. No one is going to be disappointed with this forecast unless they really like cold and rain!
Kaara - yup, you owe your man if he took you to see Magic Mike. My DH has made it clear he's not going. That's OK, I have two daughters, neighborhood gals and JoyceK...I see a girls night out in my immediate future.
We did go see Ted on Friday night. It was very, very funny with not much socially redeeming value
Did I mention how I was cooking my turkey today? Can't remember so you'll just have to suffer through my explanation of the best turkey I've ever cooked! Yup, it was so juicy and delicious, and so easy I can't believe I've never done it before. I had a 12 pounder that I bought last Thanksgiving. I removed the plastic trussing, rubbed the inside cavity and under the skin with butter, salt, pepper, rosemary, poultry seasoning and paprika. I took an empty coke can and filled it with some hard apple cider, and added fresh parsley, chives, rosemary and a couple bay leaves. I filled our little smoker box with apple wood chips, got the grill going on just one side (put the chips on this side so they get hot enough to smoke), stood the turkey up on the other side with the can shoved up the breast, and let it cook for about 4 hours at about 350. It was cooler on the side that the turkey was on so it was a slow roasting with a little smoking. Then I played in the lake all afternoon while the grill did all the work. We went for a boat ride with our neighbors and when we got back, the turkey was ready. We had corn, potato salad and cole slaw to go with it. I cooked the giblets with onions and celery so I can make some gravy tomorrow when we eat the leftovers.
And oh, that lemon blueberry trifle was a huge hit. We talked about other combinations - chocolate pudding with fresh raspberries; banana pudding with bananas, chopped walnuts and a drizzle of chocolate; whatever combo sounds good. I'm not kidding when I say it takes five minutes to make this thing.
-
Michelle, made me want to lick the screen
-
That trifle looks awesome! Yum! Turkey sounds good too. To everyone, much love, hope your weekend was filled with fun. I actually bought fruit like cherries, strawberries and watermelon today. I am going to be brave and try eating them again, and if the d train starts up again, at least I'll have the memories of good tasting fruit! I am sick of bananas....
-
Tazzy - ROFL!!! I must admit it looks pretty good for a five minute investment!
And oh, I forgot to mention, JoyceK looked much better tonight, and she is feeling much better. And her little Maltipoo puppy is the cutest little thing!
Debbie - Thanks for thinking of me, I am feeling fine...no SEs from Xeloda. I am on my "off" week and will start up again on Tuesday evening. So far, so good!
-
Maybe not food porn...but that was certainly rated R. :-)
Made it home..some chicken is cooking in the dutch oven..along with some fresh rosemary from the front yard. A salad and it's done.... i don't feel like doing much tonight.
Tomorrow is Taxol #3. July 16 will be the last one.
Eric -
Woohoo, Eric, the end is in sight! Hope all goes well tomorrow!
-
Tazzy....Oy! I hate when that happens! Seriously, I would, since I HATE sticky messes.
Michelle...that all sounds/looks great! Yum. And swim while cooking....perfect!
Yes this will be a great week up here....tho we are heading home tomorrow night (in the spirit of keeping the NH coffers full from our weekly tolls:). Seriously, since I have to attend the funeral of the sister of a co-worker who died suddenly in her sleep this weekend. Even more sadly, her co-teacher lost her brother suddenly, a month ago, so I want to be there for both of them. Just too much coincidental sudden loss!
I think we'll do the home town thing for July 4th,....parade, flea market, fire works...and miss the cool sleeping nights up here. We're leaving the resident grey fox in charge. -
Gardengumby Congradulations on your anniversary!
Michelle that looks good!
It's hard to keep up with the posts.
Last night DD wanted Spaghettios, so we each had a can! Ummm Umm good.
Tonight a frieind and I went out for dinner and she had paella and I had mussels at The Red Stripe. I think I will have them for breakfast.
Saw the movie Moonrise Kingdom. Sorry, I thought it was really boring. I want to see the Marigold Hotel
Boy do I feel great off Arimidex for about 5 days now! I feel like me! I don't want to go baaaack. No tears, no exhaustion, Yippee! I see friends! I will really have to think about this quality thing and talk to my MO. I really don't want to go back on for another 4 1/2 years, but I don't want a recurrance either. How long is it safe to take a "vacation?" I won't see him until 8/28 and it's been raising my LFTs too.
-
Lacey... it was a sticky mess for sure. But hey my kitchen is sparkling now - one way to make me clean. That is just too awful for words about your co-workers family - that is to much to bear.
Eric - good luck for tomorrow.... yes the end is in sight.
So Michelle... was the trifle - cool whip, vanilla pudding, blueberries?
-
Tazzy - it was angel food cake cut in cubes, lemon pudding, cool whip and blueberries.
Bedo - glad you are feeling yourself. There are lots of women who decide against the anti-hormones. No one really knows what's safe or whether or not you'll be fine without it. Or whether or not you take them for five years and still have a recurrence (I have a friend who had a recurrence after 13 years). BC treatment is a crap shoot, for sure.
-
Tazzy-Oh what a mess that must of been, I have had my share of mishaps in the kitchen too and it seems like it is something that takes forever to clean. I looked up El gaucho in Aruba and the menu is different but then again its in aruba and may just of changed the menu to fit the flair of flavors for the carribean.Could be though not sure.Hmmm!
Michelle- That triffle looks sooo amazing i will def be making that. Did you cut the angle food cake in bites and layer it? The turkey sounded so delicious too, i have never made it with the coke can up the wazoo but heard it was very good.
Lacey- Your friend is lucky to have you there to support her through this. Sounds like you will be having a nice 4th of july.
Moonflwr- Fresh fruit is so good right now i always try to eat lots of watermelon and other fruits in the summer since it dosn't last long.
Eric- Yay on DW last tx coming up!
Bedo-Glad you are feeling more like you! Speghettos?? lol! i havnt had those in years but used to love them. thats what i like about this thread we can share the most easiest and fun recipes!
-
I see you answered my question Michelle on the angel food cake!
-
bedo - are you feeling ok.
spaghettios from a can? actually, that sounds really good.
-
Chicken souvlaki and traditional Greek salad (cucumbers, tomatoes, olives, purple onion with feta cheese, no lettuce).
-
Bedo when I dont cook my DH loves chef boy ar dee I dont buy it but he stocks up when he does a grocery run.
Debbie curious as to what a "sheep" pan is? ha ha Laurie will appreciate that.
Eric Yes! the end is in sight, good luck to your wife and getting through this.
Had a cookout on the water with a small grill that attaches to the boat...my wonderful girldfriend made 4 pizzas to grill and they were absolutley the best pizza I have ever had. She made four different ones, pre-cooked the dough at home in the oven for just a few minutes then added the toppings wrapped them in foil, then grilled them out on the boat, she added four diff cheeses on each one that was oooey, gooey.....she is amazing!
Selena Chicken souvlaki? wanna share how you make that?
-
Thank you.
-
Lacey - I don't think there's any relation between the El Gaucho(s) here in the Pacific NW and the one in Aruba - but I could be wrong. The ones I am aware of that are related are Seattle, Portland, Bellevue and Tacoma. Great food, but you have to be prepared to spend about $200.00 for dinner - so usually we go for happy hour and are much happier spending about $50.
But for special occasions we'll do the whole dinner thing.
Tazzy - that watermelon catastrophe sounded miserable. I hate cleaning up those kinds of messes. I did drop a whole one once, but luckily I was outside.....
The trifle looked awesome. I don't make them very often anymore, but when I do, I use whipping cream and make the pudding using 1/2 milk and 1/2 sherry. I never thought of using angel food cake
the last one I made I used blueberry scones cut in hunks.
Selena, if you made the chicken souvlaki, please do share the recipe!!!
-
Gardengumby - I thought about real whipping cream in the trifle. But I was worried that the cream would deflate and separate overnight. I'm not generally fond of cool whip, but it does hold up in something like this. I may try it once, maybe even adding a little flavoring like rum or cognac.
http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/emeril-lagasse/chantilly-cream-recipe/index.html
This Emeril Lagasse recipe suggests adding one melted marshmallow to stabilize the cream...that sounds like it would work. I think I'll have to try it.
-
Michelle - I use Darigold heavy whipping cream (from Costco, of course
) and have not had a problem with separation with that brand - I also whip it fairly stiff. I like the idea of the melted marshmallow, I'll have to try it sometime. In the past I have used one packet of plain gelative in the whipping cream (when using other whipping cream than Darigold) and that solved the problem fairly well, too.
-
Ah, I like the plain gelatin idea, too!
-
Hi Selena and welcome!
Carrie- Havn't you ever heard of a"Sheep" Pan they are so neat! LOLOL!! Just kidding of course. hehe! Pizza sounds like it would be the perfect food while out on a boat and drinking beer! And a cleaver idea too!
Michelle- I actually tried the marshmellow trick and not sure if i saw a difference or not maybe mine was whipped just right where it didnt make a difference, not sure but i will try it again if i have trouble getting it to stiff peaks. Oh and i was glad to hear that Joyce was feeling better. She got a new puppy?
Going to get my license renewed today, i have lived here for 2 years and have not changed over from Ky, i know, shame, shame. I have to take the written and for some reason im nervous like im taking my first test for school or something. I have been reading the manual over and over my DH thinks im silly he said its common sense,
now that scared me!!
-
Good luck with the written test.... Who among us wouldn't be a bit nervous about it....we don't have to take too many written tests these days!:) As a positive reframe, however, just think about how much more control you have over this test than all the other "tests" we undergo at the doc office or hospital!
-
Tazzy. Do you have dogs? They would probably love to help with the cleanup.
Debbie..where in KY do hail from?
Eric -
No I am afraid I dont have dogs. When I lived in England I did - we had shepards, but since I've been in Canada no. I should've called in next doors dog Tucker - he would've cleaned it up good.
Good luck with the test Debbie. Brilliant way to look at it Lacey.
gardengumby... my Mum always used sherry in trifles.... she would soak the sponge in it oh! yum.
-
Debbie - Joyce's new baby is a malti-poo and currently weighs in at about 3.5 pounds! She's a cutie although a bundle of energy. She looks a lot like this picture, so cute!
Funny story about drivers license testing. We had to take the written test when we moved to Missouri, and my CT license was expiring first, so I fretted, I studied, and then went and scored 100% on the test. My DH couldn't believe I got a perfect score...lol! So he waited and waited. Then one day in a little bitty town in southeastern MO, he was coming back from a business road trip and he got stopped - they were doing a license check. And since his car and insurance were both MO, he got a very expensive ticket. Then he took the test and got a 95 or so! I need to get a NH license - we had just re-registered our cars for two years and my MO license had just been renewed for something like 6 years when we moved here. I should probably check it out as I'm sure we'd get hassled if we ever got stopped.
-
In Arizona, regular licenses are good until the holder reaches age 65. Commercial licenses must be renewed every 5 years.
I was renewing my commercial license...which listed brown for my hair color....the license lady behind the counter looked at my license, then at me and back at my license. Then she asked the other license lady, "His hair. Should I change it to bald or gray?".
Whatever.... :-)
