So...whats for dinner?
Comments
-
gardengumby- That sounds interesting? A fried lemon on a burger? I bet it's good though!
Carrie- Have fun tonight! I am sure your DH will have a blast with all the ladies
Debbie- I am not a huge lamb fan either. Although, I do like a gyro on occasion and I like the lamb patties. The patties don't have strong meaty taste to them.
We met friends at the park and spent the morning there with the kids running around. The sun has finally come out and once DS#2 gets up from his nap I think we will go ride bikes with the neighbors and burn some more energy off of the boys. Since temps are supposed to get hot again as of tomorrow I am thinking of something in the oven for tonight. Pretty sure I have everything I need to make a chicken pot pie.

Apple, if you're interested in a little biological warfare, ask a garden shop about bacillus tharingus. Add it to water and spray it on the leaves. The bacteria in the spray forms a spore that "comes to life" in a worm's digestive system. It gives the worms a wee bit of indigestion as it destroys their "gut".
It's not toxic to non worm things.
I was thinking of Pink Floyd's The Wall when you mentioned worms.... :-)
Eric -
Laurie- I have to be honest i never have tryed a gyro before i would try one if i had it in front of me i think. Chicken pot pie sounds yummy.
Carrie- Just make sure you get the "Rose" at the end of the night hehe! Have fun.
I have not seen the vow yet but agree who would argue with channing tatum next to you. Is anyone going to see Magic Mike? Starts this week i will probably wait until it comes on pay per view but looks like a hot movie especially with Matthew Mcconaughey now he is yummy
Crap! why in the heck does that keep happening!!
-
Eric thats a great tip!! I am going to remember that one if the worms come for my Dad's garden!
-
Sometimes you hear those ideas how to keep things away from your plants etc.. I had a problem with squirrels eating my bird seed someone told me to try caynenne pepper it worked until this one little stinker tryed it and loved it and kept coming back for more plus he started drinking all the water after that in the humming bird feeder he must of been of mexican descent in anothe life! LOL!
-
Debbie - that's just too funny!!! My SIL puts cayenne in his birdseed to keep out the squirrels and raccoons. I guess our little squirrels have no Mexican blood because it worked for him...LOL!
Apple - those caterpillars are so interesting-looking...and they eat so much!
Laurie - the sun has been trying to come out all day long, but the clouds keep winning the battle. It's rather cool here, but hopefully it will change tomorrow because our friends from Milton are coming, plus JoyceK and her DH, and we're having a little cookout. Burgers and dogs of all things, because my friend from Milton, who doesn't eat much meat at all, LOVES hot dogs. Who knew? So she's bringing some salads, I have the meat, buns and fixins for a tomato, mozzarella and basil salad, and JoyceK is bringing dessert.
And while I was at this brand new store (The Fresh Market) that opened up right near my mom's facility, I picked up pre-made dinner - baby back ribs for DH, an herb-flavored rotisserie chicken for me, some yukon gold mashed potatoes, and I'll mix up some cole slaw. And even better, I found a cheese that is almost the exact cheese I found in Paris. It's called Cambozola - it's a blend of triple cream cheese and gorgonzola, and very creamy/spreadable. So, of course, I had to buy a French baguette to go with it. It may become my appetizer before dinner tonight!!!
Went for my MO appointment this morning. All is good. I don't have to go back for two weeks, woohoo! And the clinical assistant managed to get blood without making a bruise or a bump. All is really good!!!
Even my mom was good today. I took her for a haircut, I should have taken her picture. The lady did a great job and her hair looks fabulous. We went for (not very good) Chinese food and she actually ate some of my teriyaki chicken stirfry and her wonton soup.
-
Michelle - rejoicing in your wonderful news with you. Life is looking good. I will have to look out for cambozola - it sounds divine and a great appie. Enjoy the cookout. Fun !!
I have put a pork tenderloin in the crockpot with a cajun, paprika, garlic, onion rub on it. I think I will do some corn on the cob and not sure what else yet. Maybe I willmake a potato salad.
-
Within a few hours of eating the infected leaves, the worms stop feeding and starve to death in a few days. The birds can (and do) eat the starving worms with no ill effects.
I've used the stuff for years and I haven't noticed any immunity build up in the worms, although there are now two varities of the stuff.
The garden store folks may know it better as BT.
Eric -
Tazzy: LAMO! I couldn't agree more! I was thinking...what's wrong with her?
Debbie: Magic Mike is tops on my list to see this week....LOVE Matthew McConaughey! When I suggested it to my BF I got this deer in the headlights look...like what do you want to see that for? Hummmm.
I am amazed that the rabbits haven't eaten my herb garden that I planted around my tree. I put a small barrier up, but it would keep them out if they really wanted to partake. I'm not sure it will hold up while we're on vacation if we don't get any rain.
Michelle: That cheese sounds yummy...I love the soft kind. I found some gluten free bread the other day and they actually make gluten free french bread.
Carrie: enjoy your night out with the bachelor! My kind of guy!
-
momine - I know what you mean about taking a med for the long term. I am older than you so I figure that eventually we all end up having to do that! It doesn't really bother me since it seems to be doing the job and I have no SE that I can tell. I am working on the veggie servings with a little protein - you are right - not much room for anything else!
kaara - the rain seems to have been stuck here for awhile - today we actually had some sunshine! It was somewhat shocking!
tazzy - I would not show Channing Tatum the door if I woke up from a coma, or even just a nap. I def plan on seeing Magic Mike at the earliest opportunity. One of my favorite potato salads is made with red potatoes. You mix equal parts mayo and sour cream, salt and pepper, and dill (dried or fresh). Mix in cooked red potatoes, cut up and chopped green onion. I also make a baked potato salad - use leftover baked potatoes if they are on hand, and leave the skin on. Dressing is mayo and sour cream combo with salt and pepper, and a squeeze of lemon juice. Cut up the potatoes, add dressing and mix in green onions and crumbled bacon. I like the baked potato one also because it is less "wet" since the potatoes are not boiled. I have even made it with microwaved potatoes that I cook and then put in the freezer for a short while.
luvrving - I don't know if your "Fresh Market" is the same as the ones down here in FL, but if so - I love it! There are two locations here, and they are building one closer to my house shortly. I have been buying my organic meats/chicken/eggs and veggies there, and at Whole Foods. Yay on the good stick at the MO, and that you have a couple of weeks off! Have fun at the cookout.
Dinner tonight is cheesesteak sandwich and sweet potato fries with cinnamon and honey for DH, not sure what for me! Don't know if the Arimidex is bothering me (I have only been on it for a little more than a week) but I am slightly nauseous, especially in the evening. I have read on other threads that sometimes happens, especially for the first couple of weeks.
-
Michelle- Yay on taking a little break from the dr. office. So glad you get to spend time with Joyce and your other friends kind of funny your friend like hot dogs but does not eat meat. That cambozola sounds so yummy making my mouth drool im going to see if our local deli carries it, i love that kinds of stuff. Hope all your days goes as good as this one.
Tazzy- Your dinner sounds really yummy! Since its starting to warm up i will have to get my crock pot out again.
Kaara- Thats why im waiting for it to come ot payper view dont think DH would enjoy it as much as me
-
SpecialK - I am going to try the baked potato salad... I have all the ingredients and the bacon especially appeals.
-
tazzy - it is really good, I hope you like it. If you cook the potatoes and then cut them up and they are still warm, go ahead and put the dressing on them right away. When the potatoes are warm they absorb the dressing a little bit, which is yummy. I am a bacon lover - there is never a time it doesn't appeal to me. I survived chemo by eating mashed potatoes with cheddar cheese and bacon.
-
SpecialK... and then there was bacon
I hear you. My sister is a vegan - has been for about 30 years and she says that the only 'meat' smell which still gets her buds wanting is that smell of bacon. I'll let you know how the salad goes.
-
0k, I have a minute and had to pop in....
Michelle- Have fun tonight! Such a happy post:) Good stuff all around!! I laughed at the hot dogs! I was a vegetarian for years, DH brought me to Fenway and made me try a hot dog. I couldn't believe I would agree to a bite....then I ate two
Special K I agree- great potato salad recipes. I am not a huge fan of potato salad but I think I will give yours a try too! Thanks for sharing.
Magic Mike- OMG, the last movie I saw in a theater was Saving Private Ryan ?? (I think?) And when I saw the movie trailer I told DH I AM going to go see that on the big screen!! He laughed and told me to knock my socks off. Too many good looking men to not go check that out!!
-
Laurie... I am glad I am not the only one who when has a minute checks the boards out
And tell your DH... they can knock off whatever they want - worry about socks !!
-
SpecialK - yes, I think it's the same Fresh Market chain. This is the first one in New England...hard to believe it's only 25 minutes away and I happen to go by it every time I visit my mom. It just opened today and all I can say is "wow"!
-
luvrving - you are so going to enjoy going there! They have a great zucchini nut bread that is sometimes 2 for 1. One year for DH's b-day I got everyone an individual serving of their fave dessert, the bakery is awesome. They have very good prepared salads and roasted chicken breasts too.
Too bad we can't all get together for a girl's night out and see Magic Mike together!
-
Specialk - yes, that roasted chicken was fabulous! And I saw the bakery display case...OMG!!! I did cave and buy some "kitchen sink" cookies. They had tiny ones out as samples and well, I have to admit they were irresistable. I aslo bought a small container of their roasted chicken salad. I'm guessing that's how they consume any leftover rotisserie chickens, and someone at the deli counter said it was delicious. I'll have to be on the watch for the zucchini nut bread, that sounds yummy! They were giving out samples of their medium roast coffee...I'm trying that tomorrow morning. It would take a mighty fine brew to unseat my DunkinDonuts but I'm willing to give it a try, especially when it's free.
Hmmm...might be time for "girls night out" with my daughters! Magic Mike, here we come!
-
Wow, so happy for you, Michelle, with your serendipitous day. Hope you can get the same phlebotomist on your next trip. I'm envious about the Fresh Market option you discovered. It sounds great! Definitely a good day.....and I hope your cookout is a lot of fun tomorrow!
SpecialK, thanks for the potato salad recipes....they sound like great crowd pleasers, which is when I'd make it, especially now that we have the holiday coming up.
Saw my wonderful opthomalogist (sp?) this AM to figure out why my new sunglass lenses are really hard to see with (!!). I last saw her in the middle of
rads, and I think my eyes were acting up a bit, and it turns out my prescription has changed in both eyes since then, one up one down, thus the lousy vision in the new lenses. So, now I get to pay again for another set of lenses....fingers crossed that this adjustment works. I'll be at the beach for a week in a few weeks and really need those dark lenses.
My eye doc sells Revitalash from her office and last Xmas I asked DH when he had his eye appt to buy it for one of my gifts. He did and I started using it in January and my eyelashes, which had been pathetic 6 months ago are now long and thick. I'm starting to notice all the women I see who are obviously doing the same thing....including all of the young women in my doc's office! I realized recently that even tho I feel exhausted all the time, my "lovely lashes" have me looking a lot better than I feel. I'll be happy when I feel like my eyes look! I learned today that the formula was developed after it was discovered that a glaucoma med promoted eyelash growth, so they extracted the element that was resulting in the growth and created this product. Fascinating!
Tonight I made a warm broccoli rabe/orzo salad with feta, mushrooms, onion and garlic, lemon and red pepper flakes. It definitely eclipsed the leftover steak tips we had with it, along with carrots sprinkled with tarragon. I was too tired to make a salad after the orzo/rabe prep so we did without....but my eyes sparkled throughout the meal. -
Here is a great recipe i made for dinner tonight it is really good, and loved the sauce served it over mashed potatoes and side of broccoli spears.
- 5-6 pork chops- bone-in or boneless, your choice- (I used boneless)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 bottle of beer (The darker beer the better. I use New Belguim 1554. I would not recommend going as dark as a Guinness though.)
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/3 cup ketchup (I know, I know....but TRUST ME!)
Put a little bit of extra virgin olive oil in the bottom of a skillet. Season the chops with salt and pepper and brown both sides. While pork chops are browning, combine beer, ketchup, and brown sugar in a bowl. Pour sauce mixture over the pork chops and simmer for 40-45 minutes. (Uncovered) Remove pork chops and thicken the sauce a bit. In a small cup, combine 1 TBSP of cornstarch in 1/4 cup of water. Stir to combine and add to boiling sauce, whisk so no lumps form. Put pork chops back in the thickened sauce, flip to coat. Serve over mashed potatoes or rice.
Today for lunch i had a red pepper bisque soup at a new deli that just opened it was so delicious im going back to see if i can get the recipe from them.
-
I know I read you post SpecialK's because I made the baked potato salad tonight - which was delicious BTW - sad we had conversations afterwards and as I read down just now in that post, I have no recollection whatsoever of your dinner you mentioned for your DH???
Debbie if I say so myself, my dinner was really yum. You have to try Special's baked pot salad. Your pork chop sauce sounds worthy of a try too.
Lacey - thanks for mentioning Revitalash... I know I have justfinished chemo but wish my lashes were growing like my hair. I have one
I will look out for that.
-
Debbie- got to ask- whats the sauce taste like?
I am grocery shopping tomorrow...may add it to the list:)
So tonight we get the kids down for bed. Dh and I are on the couch he with the tv,me with my book and we hear a splash....? We both looked at each other like WTH? The pool alarm goes off and we run out to see the cat swimming, trying to save its self in the pool! OMG! What cat falls in a pool?? Thekittie was fine and we were left shaking our heads. Dumb cat.
-
Tazzy, the info that comes with the Revitalash says that a doc created the formula for his wife who had just undergone chemo and lost her eyelashes. I would check out amazon.com before racing to the eye doctor for it since I think it is a better price there. I just like that it is approved by my eye doc who also uses it....she had cancer treatment two years ago....that's maybe how she got onto this. Good luck!
-
Laurie, I thought for sure you were going to discover a moose.....
and end up on Ch. 9! LOL
Glad the cat is fine....sort of. -
Specialk- Some how i missed your potato salad recipe until Tazzy brought it too my attention sounds good. I do make one similar to that and will copy paste yours.
Laurie- Its hard to describe but i would say somewhere between a hoisen sweet sauce and a barbque sauce even kind of close to the chicken one we both like. Once you cook it and thicken it, it really has a great flavor if you wanted it a little less sweet just add less b.sugar.
Lacey- That eyelash stuff sounds great, i was afraid to use the other one (caant remember the name) heard it changed your eye color and could cause problems with the sight so i will check into this one.
Oh and Laurie- That is too funny about the cat guess she wanted a midnight swim lol!
-
oh the drama at my house. My daughter went nuts when she found out that i killed a hornworm by cutting in it half.. at 12, she actually cried. She went out and found 5 more, and made them a little home in a basket with salad greens covered with saran wrap with holes. She played with them all afternoon.
She saved them for my four neices and nephews who were coming to dinner. They wanted to play with them, so i made them put on inspector gloves.
My son #1 went and dumped them at the top of the field after dinner. (way to be a good citizen mr. eagle scout.)Thank you Eric, - I'm off to find some this morning. i only have 2 tomato plants but they were doing so well.
We found at least 6 of the buggers.. shudder.
sooo i think i need to spray.. i didn't find any of those creatures this morning. yet. -
We have a Fresh Market in our little town here in NC. I've been there a couple of times, but haven't been this year. It's so expensive...I feel like I need to take a loan from the bank when I shop there. Now that I'm trying to go all organic, it seems to be the only place nearby other than the local farmer's market that carries mostly organic. I guess it's the price we pay for good health.
I'm going to order some of that eyelash stuff. Mine are sparse at best and no amount of volume mascara works. My eyebrows are thin too but at least I can fill those in with pencil.
All the new recipes sound great! I'm not very creative these days...wish I had more to share.
Apple: You DD is sensitive just like mine, who wouldn't even kill a cockroach if she could capture it and take it outside...ugh! When her DS, my DGS was small I showed him a cute little bug on the sidewalk one day, thinking he would be like DD and want to capture it and play with it...well, quick as a wink, he stepped on it and smashed it! Must take after his dad who hates bugs.
Tonight we're going to see another play at our local theater...it's about golf...oh joy! Really, it's supposed to be very funny...I'll let you know.
-
Kaara, I think I read something yesterday at the eye doc's that revitalash works for eyebrows too. I've never tried that since I am well endowed there. You can probably google it and find out. I do get a kick out of my lively eyelashes. I'm sure you will enjoy
yours...not sure why I didn't know that our eyelashes fall out as we get older, even without harsh medical treatments.
Apple, I feel your parental pain about being a hornworm killer....recently, I was unable to console a third grade boy who is a new staunch advocate of Mother Earth and all things living. He had gone on a field trip to the Arboretum and the guide took apart a leaf to show the biology of it. Oy! He felt like he witnessed an execution, and was so distressed.
Eagle scout was a good brother! -
Morning everyone, Concert was a blast last night, DH didnt really get us girls all to himself as we ran into many friends. Trying to fix single girlfriend up with a date...she met two diff guys but didnt get any requests for phone num exchanges...all fun.
Specialk I have done that potato salad for few years now and it is everyones favorite, traditional pot salad is not really liked in our household.
Laurie Funny about that cat. Our cat used to perch on the edge of the pool to drink and I was always afraid it would fall in.
Yesterday we found out that my sister (3years older than me) has breast cancer, sm, encapsulated. She will start calling docs to day to find out plan of action. Sad day for us all, it breaks my moms heart to see her girls go through this.
My girlfriends are doing a girls night tomorrow to see Magic Mike, but I cannot go Will have to catch it another time
