My boss and 2 other co workers took me out for a b-lated bday lunch.  Had a Maryland Crab Cake Burger with lettuce and tomato, fr fr and cole slaw with unsweetened ice tea.  No supper for me tonight.  We ate at Fishbones, again.  Tomorrow Rebekah and I with a BC buddy from work are going to hike Mount Monadnock.

debbie.. i helped care for my 'elderlys' in their final years and months... and they were all a chilly bunch.    gloves and a stocking hat really helped in keeping them warm.. Cold hands signify a chill.  I swear my mother in law was cold at 99 degrees.  i had to really protect her extremities and make her wear a hat.  sometimes just wrapping her head with a scarf while she was sleeping.

Happy Belated Birthday Deborye!!!  Sounds like the celebration is lasting a while!  That's always a good thing.  Enjoy!

Carrie, I also saw that recipe and thought it looked good.  My DD and DS are so picky.  I usually  cook so plain so they'll eat it, but I am going to try that too.  I hope it will come out as well for me.

Debbie, I do not suffer from the cold.  I work hard (or at least I did until I was on disability for BC) and refuse to be cold.  I turn the heat on whenever I'm cold.  I've turned it on a couple times already this fall.  It is going to be in the 80's today though.  I would not turn the AC on,  but hubby probably will.  He doesn't like to be warm.  What a pair we make!

Going over to my MIL's for break the fast for Yom Kippur tonight for dinner.  (DH is Jewish; I'm not; but I don't object to celebrating!  I found it interesting when I first learned about it.  Jews fast from sundown on Yom Kippur to sun down the next day to repent their wrongs for the entire previous year.  Then they eat breakfast foods at dinner time.  Bagels, eggs, lox, and some other stuff.  My theory is you just wouldn't be able to cook while your stomach is rumbling from not eating.)

Enjoy the weekend everyone!  Hope everyone is getting the nice weather like we're having here.

    Michelle,

Wanted to let you know that I made your chili recipe and it was really good!!

It worked out really well because I got it all put together early in the day when I was still feeling somewhat OK and let it simmer. Then all we had to do is eat later in the day when my cold really kicked up.... Still feel like crud today but, hopefully will be on the mend soon!

    Debbie,

Thanks for the recipe for the cake! Can't wait to try it.... I love chocolate with orange (or raspberry) but then, I like chocolate with darn near anthing....lol

    Carole,

I have been enjoying your travelogue especially the magnificent photos!! A trip to Alaska is dream of mine.... Someday.......

    Apple,

My son and daughter can be picky eaters at times but we all love the Chinese buffet... Something there for everyone's taste!

    Carrie,

Thanks for posting about the King Ranch Chicken... I somehow managed to miss that whole page over on Chrissy's thread.... It sounds really good!

    Deborye,

Glad to hear you enjoyed your birthday lunch!! Mmmmmmmmm..... Crab!

    Kay,

Have a good time tonight at your dinner! I don't think I've ever had lox...

I tried the WW dinners, had to be careful, a lot of sodium. I mentioned that to my leader and she agreed.

Deborye...........I'm on WW and the Points Plus..........your right they do have more sodium then I should eat, but honestly, it pay to keep them in the house.............it keeps you from doing something "stupid" when you haven't planned anything, or are in a pinch for what your going to eat............they are very good too, compared to some of the other stuff out there.

Just drink more water after eating one to flush your system of the sodium....that will help.............as I said they are good in a pinch.

Minustwo- Here is the recipe for the bars if you want to go to the orignial site, and you can see the bars and read reviews on it, she also has many other good recipes that are really healthy and good, just type into your search bar ( sorry i cant paste the link)  ' kath eats real food oatmeal bars'  and click on that link.

    Baked Oatmeal Snack Bars

    Ingredients

    • 1.5 cups rolled oats
    • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts [or any nuts you like]
    • 1/2 cup dried fruit (any you like – raisins, cranberries, dates, figs)
    • 1/4 cup seeds (any you like – sunflower, pumpkin, flax, sesame)
    • 1 tsp cinnamon
    • 1 tsp kosher salt
    • 1.25 cups skim milk
    • 1 egg
    • 1 tsp vanilla

    Method:

    1. Preheat oven to 350*
    2. Mix dry ingredients.
    3. Mix wet ingredients.
    4. Pour wet into dry. Stir to combine.
    5. Pour into a 9×9 baking dish either coated in cooking spray or lined with parchment.
    6. Bake for 40 minutes.
    7. Cut into 9 squares.

Makes 9 servings . Each bar is appx. 170 calories, 3 grams fiber and 5 grams protein. [Cut into 12 squares reduces calories to about 125 calories per square]

While delicious, the only sweetness in these comes from the dried fruit. Add in 1/4 – 1/2 cup brown sugar if you like.

The variations are endless: cranberries, coconut, all kinds of dried fruit, nuts, etc.

kaye1963.. if you don't like the lox you can use it in an awesome horsdoover..

chop a quarter onion finely and mix it with minced lox and cream cheese.. serve with crackers or if you want to be fancy and wow the guests.  pipe it into cream puff pastry... the chef's answer to what should i serve today.

the recipe is simple.  better with whipped cream, pastry cream and covered with chocolate but delish as a horse doover base.

Seaside - glad you enjoyed the chili!

Joyce - can't wait for a week from Monday!!!

Kay and Apple - I'm not a fan of lox, and I really dislike raw onion, so it has two strikes against it!  There are lots of other yummy things to shmear on a bagel, though!

Deborye - glad you found some nice color in Jaffrey.  It seems to be a disappointing year for fall foliage.  I think we'll have to take a drive to Newport Beach in early November.  We went there last year for a wedding and the Japanese Maples were brilliant!

Last night we took our daughter to Boston's North End for a nice Itialian dinner and then dessert at the Modern Pastry Shop, our favorite.  It was such a gorgeous evening, and the NE was jammed.  But somehow (because DH listened to me for a change) we found a parking spot on a side street and a restaurant that wasn't in the heart of the crowds.  I had lobster ravioli and it was just amazing.  I wanted to take a loaf of bread and just wipe up all the sauce.  But I was saving a few carbs for the chocolate fruit tart that my DD and I shared at the pastry shop.  We also had cappuccinos; and because we were having table service, we got to walk past the line that went half way up the street. It's a little known secret for Friday and Saturday nights there.  I learned it from a 92-year-old lady who buzzed right by us a couple weeks ago when we were patiently waiting our turn to get in the door.  I saw that and, thought she was pretty nervy.  Then we found out that those tables were first come, first served.  Hey, you can always learn something, right?

Today we are picking up some friends from Olathe at their hotel at the airport and showing them a few sights, exploring Quincy Market and Faneuil Hall area, and eating in the North End (because you cannot possibly do that too often!)  The weather is spectacular and we are going to enjoy every minute of it!

Hope everyone has a great Sunday!

Went to Boston today and did some touring with our friends from Kansas.  What a spectacular day!  And we scored a patio table with full view of the Columbus Day Parade in the North End!  He was Italian, after all!  So it was all just perfect!

Deborye - I would say we are at about 25% color, do you agree?  But what I see happening is a very quick turning to brown.

I am tired...lots of running around the last few days.  I was going to my daughter's tomorrow to watch the grandkids while the parents shopped.  My daughter just texted me - the kids are all coughing, so I won't be going.  So, I'll be relaxing.  Sounds like a plan!  DH has to work, so it will be just me, and that's good!  And I won't have to share my leftover veal parm with sauteed spinach Tongue out

Sounds like a very good plan Michelle.  Getting up early to bring DD to Logan, she will be going back to Bermuda and straight to work.  We went to visit my Dad in assisted living to have lunch with him, he seemed a little out of it today.  We spent 4 hours at the Pheasant Lane Mall. Things are so expensive in Bermuda that when she comes here she has to shop shop shop.

Jan- Wanted to tell you also that i have made these a few times and this time i put in a lot of sunflower seeds, liked them but not as good as when i used walnuts only and not the seeds.

Michelle- How are your counts are they back to normal yet? I love boston, sounds like you had a great time, and the lobster raviolis sounds delicious!

I love lox- I make mine with capers and cream cheese but put it on english muffins as i dont care too much for bagels. Mainly because they are too hard on my teeth.

Had a great week-end with my Dad, I just love him so much, dont know what i will do if any thing happens to him. we said our good-byes tonight because he gets up really early and he will have left by the time i get up. Even though he only lives 4 1/2 hours away i still cry everytime i have to say goodbye. We laugh, and joke and cry together over my mom and sister but mostly we are always telling each other how much we love each other and hug alot! You just never know when the last time you will see any of your loved ones. See, Im all emotional right now !! LOL!

Debbie - I am not scheduled for more lab work until early November.  I would assume that my WBC is hovering around the low end of normal, at best, and my RBC is probably still down.  I am less than two weeks PFC so I am still technically in the "chemo zone".

Today will be an "almost no carb" diet for me as I have the PET/CT scan tomorrow at 11:30.  And I have to lay low - no physical exercise to mess up the test.  I may go for a ride to find some pretty foliage views and take a few pictures.  There are enough back roads right around here that I don't have to go too far. It's going to be around 80 again today and I don't want to miss what is probably the last of these really nice days.

Uggg.... gefilte fish is another favorite of the in laws.  That one I refuse to try.

I sort of know how you feel Apple.  I have little desire to cook.  This thread gives me incentive.  The problem is not my appetite, but I'm afraid to eat anything.  I'm afraid it's too high in carbs or glycemic index or inflammatory or too high in fat or dairy or something.  I'm sorry you have no appetite.

I cooked a roast beef last night.  It was still some of that cow that we bought that is still in our freezer.  Not a cut I have ever bought, bolar roast.  The flavor of the meat was great.  It is just incredible to me how much more flavor this has that what you buy in the supermarket, but it had a lot of fat on it and was really hard to slice (made even harder by my wrapped arm  - thanks lymphedema!).  I have another one in the freezer.  Not sure what to do with it.  I guess I'll do the same thing, hopefully that one won't have as much fat going through it.  Also tried making mashed turnips.  I boiled them for almost 2 hours, but they never got soft.  Should they have?  Had to mash them in the blender because the hand mixer wasn't cutting it.  Flavor was good, but didn't like the texture, seemed soupy even though they were hard before putting in the blender.  Maybe I'll try baking them next time.

Hamburgers and corn on the cob - one of my favorite "easy" meals.  But if lobster sounds good, I think you should get one for yourself!  I do believe Price Chopper usually has them in a tank, live and kickin'.

Just ate two scrambled eggs with some shredded Mexican cheese mixed in.  That should get me through my little photo-op seeking trip.  Going to leave soon.

kay, if the thought of all that fat on the roast bothers you just remind yourself that it is the fat that gives it all that wonderful flavor.

I really don't have a recipe but combine groundbeef, rice, an egg and cooked onions and garlic.. roll them up in the leave of cabbage (lightly blanched for suppleness) and layer the rolls with saurkraut and cook for quite a while at a low low temp in my big German pot.

    No tomatoes for me..

    anyone else make these occasionally?

the thought makes my appetite come back.
