Happy Birthday, Bren - enjoy your new shoes and everything else.

I had forgotten how pleasant a nice outdoor walk could be. It is cloudy here, probably in the fifties and absolutely heavenly! It felt so liberating to just spread my body in the timeless way of a primate - walk on two feet in nature - and actually enjoy it.

It occurred to me that there may be one way to identify a BC patient -at least an er-positive one- o0n the street. Look at the person with the coolest clothes on, as in the least warm ones. I was the one person in a summer T-shirt. Thank you Tamoxifen!

I wanted to share something yesterday and forgot - did you all hear/read about the Marine who was awarded the Medal of Honor? He stood out in a horrible day marked by treachery and, amongst many other things, US military blunders and shocking lack of army solidarity with the Marine corps, sad to say. He was truly a hero. I love these stories. Anyway, I only read the NYT's piece, but will look for more. It's nice to have a recipient of the award be alive, too. He sounds like an amazing person. He is now on inactive status and works as a construction worker, and when Obama first called him to congratulate him, etc... he would not come to the phone because he wasn't on break! So the president called again during his break. It makes you cry - he has a really sweet face and he showed, that day, that good really does outdo evil every time. I have always believed that. I am an atheist, a skeptic, but, also an optimist. I recommend the news item.

Yey, Hillck - nice surprise there! Almost like finding a stash of cash you had forgotten about, or something.

Susie, it must be disheartening to see your son with someone you don't really think much of. Enjoy the baby, though.

(((Otter))) you always make me laugh. I will be on the hear-out to detect any annoying sounds that can liven up my hopefully uneventful experience and booooooring final report (so we hope).

Happy happy happy birthday, Bren -- and congrats congrats congrats, Cindy!

Athena, I also read the NYT article about the medal of honor winner, and was also struck by it.  Unbelievable, for that sweet-faced boy (because he did look heartbreakingly young) to have come through such horror, and then go back to the work-a-day world.  How funny, too, that he didn't want to take a phone call during his shift, even if it was from the President -- and even funnier that the President dutifully hung up and called back on his lunch break.  I also loved the fact that his one wish was to share a beer with the President, which I understand they did.

Beautiful day here today.  Just finished lunch (a bit late) -- I discovered this amazing pickled cauliflower at the little Arab store by the farmers' market.  It's spicy and funky -- almost like kimchi -- and loaded with turmeric.  Yum, and I'm going to tell myself it's healthy: surely the probiotic action plus the turmeric cancel out the salt.

(Oh yes, Sunflowers, I'm another that you do NOT want to hear sing.  Ever.)

I saw the Medal of Honour winner interviewed.  He was extremely modest, and wondered why he was singled out amongst his fellow Marines.  A very humble, and most deserving honour for him -- glad he had the opportunity to share a beer with his President!

It's coolish but sunny here, and has been most of the week -- and autumn hasn't even officially arrived!  My maple tree started shedding its leaves in August, apparently because the heat of the summer stressed it out so much that shedding leaves was its means of survival.  Sort of like humans stripping down in the hot sunEmbarassed

    ETA -- walking tall, Bren!!!

Hillck - CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!  That is SUCH, such, such a wonderful feeling.  I'm so happy for you, and I love that your treatment center has such a celebratory custom too.  I adore those gongs - always wanted one in my house.  Just love the sound - I've got bells all over my little cabin.

Bren - you look GORGEOUS!  WOW - I could probably fit 1/2 of me in those skinny pants!  Just wonderful too that you can manage in those shoes.  I manage to trip in walking shoes - NB Country Walkers, to be exact.  Seems to be the best fit for me.  I also love LLBean Comfort moccassins or something like that - always wait til they go on sale.

Happy walking, Athena,  just packed away my t shirts - we DID have a slight frost last night. Only in the 50's today.  Fall is here.  Love all the seasons, especially in rural New England.  My only problem with Fall, loving the glorious colours, is RAGWEED.  Auuugghhhhhh......ach-ooo.

Oh, malted milk balls.  I can taste one now, and feel it crunch as I munch.  I used to also love Charleston Chews.  We use to freeze them, and then WHACK them on the counter - and shatter it into a zillion pieces - still managed to scarf it down pretty quickly. tho.

I too have been "following" the Medal of Honor winner - inspiring, and honestly reminds me of how the people I grew up with ( 1950's) used to treat, behave with each other.  Perhaps one of the reasons I so love living in a really small rural community.  Old Glory is still flying from all the posts in the center of town, been there since a few days before 9/11.

We're baby sitting - OMG - haven't done that since the kids were little. Sweetest bubby went to sleep before they left and not a peep out of him. We both got lots of smiles tonight.

Just looked at that crap review site - what a load of bulldust - I feel like I'm being stalked - might talk to an attorney about suing some of them - I just might screen shot their bottoms :)

Happy Birthday Bren! I love your new shoes, and I love the way your dog is looking at them!

Congratulations, Cindy, on the unexpected end to your Herceptin treatments. It's usually bad news that sneaks up on us like that, so I'm glad it was good this time.

Thanks for the tip about the lion cubs, Ang!

This is what their birthday cake consisted of, according to the WP:

The cake given to the lions was made of ice, two whole cow femurs cut in half, five pounds of shaved beef and a half-gallon of cow blood.

So there's no accounting for taste. Tongue out

    Got this joke today....

    HEALTH ALERT

When you drink Vodka over ice, it can give you kidney failure,
When you drink Rum over ice, it can give you liver failure,
When you drink whiskey over ice, it can give you heart problems,
When you drink Gin over ice, it can give you brain problems.
Apparently, ice is really bad for you.

    Warn all your other friends!

Oh, hah hah, jancie!  That's a good one. hillck, congrats on the surprise ending to your Herceptin experience. I like when our chemo centers hold celebrations for us.  Athena, I hope it's okay if we skip the lion cubs' party, or at least decline the birthday cake.

As for cake, I am sitting here drooling over the pic of the malted milk ball cake.  If it's decorated with malted milk balls, can you imagine what the rest of the cake is like?  Anyone else want some dessert???

I was so impressed with the young man who received the Medal of Honor and was struck by how genuine he is, like a throwback to a more compassionate and civil time.

But one thing he said broke my heart. He didn't consider himself a hero because a hero would have sacrificed his life trying to get those fellow soldiers out alive. And they didn't all survive, but he did, so obviously (in his thinking), he didn't do enough. Cry

I hope he finds peace and is able to move beyond the survivor's guilt and will be able to go a little easier on himself. What he did was indescribably brave and I hope he can see that someday.

FYI-some are interpreting the Medal of Honor's reluctance to accept the award as a sign that he is ashamed to be seen with President Obama.

Not my interpretation, but an example how things can be twisted to suit one's own point of view.
