OTTER - how gorgeous - I never knew "we" had an association. Shudda known, having spent a lot of time on K. St. in DC - everybody has an association ;-)))
Rosemary - ah, was that the soup with the cat fur in it??? Or am I still confuzzled

27 degrees? wow - it was a terribly HOT, HUMID, HUMID in the high 80's in western MA. Almost as bad as summer.
This is not political, and a lot of people I know are doing a HAPPY DANCE cuz Elizabeth Warren is going to run in the Democrativ Primary for Ted Kennedy's Senate seat. Some one else has it now, but we still call it Ted Kennedy's Senate Seat. Also, being non political, I've just started reading Tom Friedman/Michael Mandelbaum's That Used to be US. Was the lead book/cover story in Sunday's New York Times Book Review, fair warning - it ain't all that happy reading - will let you know when I'm done about my review
-
The soup with cat hair and no comma. Yummy.
If you don't understand go back a few pages.
-
Rosemary - reminds me of the title of a great book - Eats, Shoots and Leaves - remember that one? I remember the post, and I was kinda "teasing" you about it. I'll bet the soup was delicious. Certainly better than anything I can cook. Which isn't, well, High Praise, but is still praise

I'm going to outside to say goodnight to the moon. And then hello to Felix Holt, my last novel of George Eliot. ( I've read all the others) Reading is one of my greatest joys. Hope eveyone has a long & sleepfilled peaceful night.
-
Thanks pals.
-
Sounds like that soup will have everyone coughing up hairballs later........hahaha JK!! I love chicken noodle soup....yum!!!
Otter.........sounds like that fur coat is coming in handy!!!!
Barbara........sounds like things are lookin up........good luck!
I could make a fur coat with all the shedding going on around here! Standing on my head daily picking up furballs. Time to put the kenmore on overdrive and overtime........I could really think of better things to do tho!
-
I brushed my daughter's cat last night for about 10 minutes and had enough hair to make several catlets. Fall is coming!
-
E- catlets hahaha, I think I'll knit booties for the pups with mine!!!! LOL
-
CrazyDaisy - coughing up hairballs - LMFAO!
Barbara - will keep everything crossed for your second interview!
Love the sunflower picture.

Good Thursday, everyone - it's going to be cooler today in my area and by dawn tomorrow we may see temperatures briefly in the 40s, although they will go up to the 60s or 70s as th day goes by - YEY - finally weather to feel comfortable in! If only it were 50 degrees all year round....
Think I'm moving to Tierra del Fuego next summer....
-
What? The 40s? Woohoo! Comfort here I come!
Good morning, all!
-
Good Morning.
Ok. I'll go first. Yes, I often resent the "pink washing" - and Octobr is coming. I don't blame Nancy Brinker, or anyone at Susan G. Komen. Maybe I know more about the history of it than most, just one of those things. I heard Ambassador Brinker on the radio the other day too, she was asked: "Why pink, why not peach?" Her answer: "Pink was Suzy's favorite color."
So, in the hope that getting through October may be a little bit easier for some of us, I'm posting this link the the "history" of Komen. http://ww5.komen.org/AboutUs/SusanGKomensStory.html And, while ou're reading it, please, PLEASE, try to put yourself back into 1978 ( if you were alive then) and imagine what these two sisters were experiencing.
A time, when as Betty Ford finally made public, the word breast was NOT used in The New York Times, or any other major newspaper, even if it was followed by the word cancer.
A very, very different time. But I think we can agree, and hopefully avoid "food fights" - much has changed, and much of that change in the culture, the medical world, for the GOOD can be traced back to the catalytic work of Susan G. Komen. I don't blame Komen for "pink washing."
-
Good Morning All it's wonderfully cool here this morning - my kind of weather.
Sunflowers - I WAS around in 1978 (and a good many years before that) I am well aware of the genesis of Komen BUT it has spiralled out of control and I don't have to like it and I DON'T - I support the Terry Fox Foundation actually - they are the group that supplied some of the funding for the Dr. Bell et al breakthrough that was just announced.
BarbaraA - keeping everything crossed for you (still) - good news is just around the corner.

The Terry Fox Run Around The WorldIt is truly moving that the heroic, unselfish mission of one young man serves as such an inspiration to all of us no matter where we live in the world. The Terry Fox Run, named in honour of Canadian amputee runner Terry Fox who at 21, attempted to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research, is no longer just a Canadian tradition. Countries around the world stage annual events in support of Terry's dream of finding a cure for cancer. Nearly all the money raised is remitted to institutions accredited by the International Union Against Cancer in Geneva.
As the world becomes more homogenized, so too does the Terry Fox Run. The Foundation is proud to be involved in a growing worldwide family dedicated to eradicating a disease that knows no political or geographic boundaries.
International Run locations are organized by Canadian Embassies/Consulates, Canadian Forces Bases, Anti-Cancer Councils and Societies as well as other dedicated organizations and individuals. The reports that we receive suggest that the Terry Fox Run provides an important opportunity for solidifying the good name that Canada has always had with people around the world.
Please continue your visit at our site to learn more about Terry and how his story has made such an impact on millions of people. Please contact us if you have any questions about participating in your country.International Newsletter 2011---From the Terry Fox Foundation website. Fully 85% of the monies raised from these annual runs is donated to research institutions. ETA: Terry's original goal was to raise $24M, or $1 from every Canadian (at that time). To date, the annual runs have raised over $550M, all starting with what seemed like an impossible dream by an incredibly determined 21-year-old man. -
Love the Terry Fox Run, and also have been a long time supporter of The Jimmy Fund, even b4 I cheered for the Red Sox.
I still admire what Nancy Brinker created, the awareness, and the $$$ going to scientific research. As I said, I don't hold that organization responsible for what others have done to "piggyback" (Pink Wash?) their success in changing the culture, the world, regarding breast cancer. Which is why I posted the link to her OWN story about her sister, Susan G. Komen being diagnosed with bc at age 33, and how little they knew at that time.
To me, that would kind of be like being critical of Rachel Carson for corporate "green washing." Also appreciate others will see things differently, "ISY, YSN"

Good morning, all. It's foggy and 40 degrees here in the foothills of the Rockies. A thousand feet above us there is a dusting of snow. And more on the back range. Tomorrow it will be near 80. Love fall in the Rockies, but not so much that I went for a hike yesterday as planned--I just wasn't ready to hike in rain and snow yet! In a few weeks the aspen will be turning to gold. I'll be out hiking then!
Time to think about getting dressed and heading out for my usual Thursday stuff: errands, lunch at Barnes & Noble cafe with a good book, Pilates, and maybe dinner out. If not, then I'll come home and make a nice chicken and quinoa soup--minus the furballs, please.
Everyone have a happy, grateful Thursday.
-
Gosh, I'm always amazed at how busy BCO is!
YUM, AnneW - chicken and quinoa soup??? I LOVE quinoa!! Do you have a recipe to share?? Yeah, I'll take mine minus the furballs too! Yes - fall in the Rockies - aaahhhh!!! The Hayman Fire sure cleared the way for the aspens to flourish. It's been gorgeous these past few autumns, and we already have some aspens 10 or 15 feet tall.
-
The thing I miss about living out west are the quakies. The aspens are so gorgeous in the fall, they look like shimmering silver dollars.
Our colors aren't changing here yet ... just leaves and acorns falling everywhere.
OMG .. I just took the worst tumble in Belk. I was trying on a very cool pair of high healed open toed boots when I went crashing to the floor. I was so embarrassed, and a crowd of people gathered round to help me. I hurt my left butt cheek and left wrist when I landed. What a clutz! Anyway .. the shoes are so cute and they were marked down 75% to $13 .. how could I resist such a bargain.
I'm wearing my new 'heels' all day today to get used to being so tall. I also got a pair of jeans a size smaller than usual. I've been cutting calories for the last couple of months. So aside from falling on my ass .. it was a great day. Happy Birthday to me!!! (on Saturday). We're going to go out Saturday night with my sis and her husband. This is quite an event as we never go anywhere after dark! ha!!
Hope everyone is having a good day,
Bren

Happy soon-to-be-birthday birthday, Bren!
-
Happy almost birthday, Bren!
OK, the shepherd's pie with cauliflower was wonderful!
1 lb ground hormone-free beef, 2 carrots, 1 onion, 1/2 c dry sherry, thyme, rosemary, pepper
Steam 1 head cauliflower
Saute carrot in 2 tbl olive oil, add onion then add beef and spices. After the beef is brown, lower heat and add sherry and simmer. Mash the cauliflower with 4 TBL organic butter. Put the beef into a 2QT Pyrex dish, spread cauliflower on top and bake at 400 degrees for 25-30 minutes. YUM!!!
-
Yikes Bren - at least you'll be fashionable while you're in traction - seriously though, hope you're o.k. Happy Almost Birthday!
Barbara - thanks for the recipe it looks gooooood.
-
Sandy, visualizing Bren in traction with high heels on made me spit out my water!! LMBO.
-
Heels - imagine my even knowing someone who wears heels
Amazing the horizons bc opens. Congratulations on the smaller jeans - that is SO fabulous - everything I own has an elastic waist, but I can tell some feel a bit bigger.Super Happy Almost Birthday - which are events I think should be celebrated for days & days & days
-
Hey guys .. these shoes have 4 inch heels. I'm am so hip and modern. Also living dangerously perched so high up! They're quite safe though in a sitting position. Tim is going to think it's very sexy that I'm so tall now!.
My left wrist is still a little sore. That and my butt cheek took all my weight. And I'm not skinny!
Sandy .. you crack me up!
Thanks for all the well wishes ladies, but it's not until Saturday!
hugs,
Bren
-
Happy almost birthday Bren. I spent about a month saying I was doing this that or the other thing for my birthday. It really was a lot of fun.
-
Bren - ARNICA GEL - wonderful for heaing bruises - the sooner after the bruising you put it on, the better. Any good health food store. I use Wole Foods "generic" 365 brand, most economical.
-
4 inch heels ... Yikes!! No drinks for you from the bar Missy until you take those boots off

-
LOL Bren.....their safe in a sitting position! Man it's tough being cool and up to date huh??? Hope with lots of practice you'll be doing circles around everyone by Sat nite! GOOOOOOO GURL! And have a fab birthday Sat!

-
