worldwatcher, you must not have heard what the (female) secretarial staff in my department were saying about Hillary Clinton during the 1990's.  I had to leave the room and walk out into the hallway a couple of times, to keep from saying something I'd regret.  (It was a workplace, after all.)

Pecan waffles, anyone?  Seriously?  The recipe I use is from a Pillsbury Cookbook.  Y'all want it posted here, or via PM's?  <<<<<not to be confused with "PMS"  It's not very long.

    It's way past my lunchtime.

[Edited to add: I'll be back in 20 with the recipe.]

Otter .. we're all hungy.  Tim would love it if I made some pecan waffles.  Hell, he'd love it if I cooked anything!

    Otter....

Is there a comparison between what  "the (female) secretarial staff in my department were saying about Hillary Clinton during the 1990's." to the all-out assault by ABCCBSNBCMSNBC, the liberal blogs..and the NYT and WaPo on the Republican women?

The worst damage to Hillary was done by Obama in the '08 campaign.

Nothing better than a Waffle House pecan waffle at 3am after a horse show!  I look forward to the recipe also!

Just found the regular Waffle House recipe in the "Top Secret Restaurant Recipes 2", I am assuming I just add pecans.  For those of you that like cooking, this is a pretty good cookbook.

However, I am crushed to see that there is no recipe for Spudnuts!

ETA - of course they have one for pecan waffles too, but I'm waiting for the Otter-approved one Wink

worldwatcher -- In response to your earlier post, the only person who broadly hinted that Laughner was a leftwinger was Ms Palin.  There seems to be evidence in his writings that he had libertarian leanings.  He did shoot a Democratic congresswoman, after all!

And even though I live north of the border, my cable company carries all the U.S. national networks as well as CNN.  From what I have seen, these outlets have given Palin and Bachmann incredible exposure and play, and extremely little criticism.  Please don't confuse so-called liberal "blogs" with national TV media.

    Ta-da!

Pecan Waffles (adapted from recipe on p. 100 of Pillsbury Kitchens’ Cookbook, ©1979)

2 eggs, separated (don’t cheat on this – it’s important to separate the eggs)
2 cups buttermilk (either fat-free or full-bodied, but use real buttermilk)
2 cups all-purpose flour (sifting not necessary)
    2 teaspoons baking powder
    1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt (I use only half a teaspoon of salt)
½ cup (= 1 regular stick) margarine or butter, melted
¾ cup chopped pecans (more or less) [you could try blueberries instead]

Heat waffle iron*.  Place egg yolks in a large mixing bowl, whites in a small bowl. Beat the yolks gently; then add the buttermilk and beat well. (I use my Sunbeam hand-held mixer for all mixing except the last step.)  Add flour, baking powder, soda, and salt (which I’ve usually stirred together in a separate bowl already); beat until smooth.  Stir in melted margarine.  Beat the egg whites until soft peaks form; fold into the batter. (I fold the egg whites in by hand; you want the batter to be light.)  Pour cupfuls (or whatever is handy) onto the hot waffle iron, sprinking with chopped pecans before closing the lid. (You can mix the pecans into the batter, but they’ll float; so I just scatter them on top. You could toss a handful of blueberries on top instead, but I haven't tried that.)  Bake until steaming stops (or whatever the instructions say with your waffle iron) and waffle is golden brown.  Serve with butter or margarine plus your favorite syrup. (We use 100% maple syrup that we smuggle home from Wisconsin.)

Note:  This recipe makes 6 whole waffles with my 8-inch, round waffle iron.  Three half-waffles are plenty for one person in my family. They freeze well if allowed to cool and then separated with wax paper in a zip-lock freezer bag.  To reheat:  Thaw the desired number of waffles in the microwave, then arrange them flat on a cookie sheet (spray the sheet with non-stick spray and they’ll come off more easily); cover loosely with aluminum foil; bake at 350 - 375 F for 5 minutes, then flip over and bake for another 4 - 5 minutes.

*My waffle iron has a non-stick surface, but I don’t scrub it with soap between uses.  I “season” it each time by making the first waffle and feeding it to the dog (or I would if I had a dog).  There’s a lot of butter/margarine in this recipe, which coats the waffle iron and keeps subsequent waffles from sticking. Even so, some irons need to be “oiled” or sprayed with non-stick spray.

    Have fun!

Oh, Otter,  I may have to buy a waffle iron!!!

All this talk of Spudnuts and technology races got me googling yesterday -- when I was in college in the early 1970s (in Madison, WI), Spudnuts was a favorite hangout.  And I think it must have been a favorite hangout of some Physics Department postdocs!

Otter, this is especially for you, because I think you would get a giggle out of the name:

I'm a bit embarrassed but it is kind of funny.  I was thinking "how does one get the 'waffle' pattern in waffles"?  I COMPLETELY forgot about the waffle iron.Embarassed

Ann, that's hilarious!  Were they joking?  (I'm thinking of the names the molecular genetics geeks use for their newly-discovered genes, like "Hedgehog" etc.)

BTW, Allrecipes does have a pecan waffle recipe that's similar to the one I use.  I might try it next time (which will probably be tomorrow morning):  http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Nutty-Pecan-Waffles/Detail.aspx

Hi Otter -- I'm positive they all met for breakfast (or while taking a break from the Physics Building at 3 AM) at Spudnuts, and named their code for their favorite "workplace" -- just like the guy who named "Hedgehog" was honoring the video game ("Sonic the ...")!

    Lindasa

I live in Arizona.  Perhaps I have more access to the Loughner case than has been in the national media.

    http://blogs.phoenixnewtimes.com/valleyfever/2011/01/palin_and_tea_party_rhetoric_w.php

Palin and Tea Party Rhetoric Was Not the Reason Gabrielle Giffords Was Attacked -- America's Treatment of Mental Illness Is to Blame

    Civility is not the issue.

The shallow, self-serving calls for the moderation of rhetoric, for the elimination of passionate politics, for the muzzling of the Tea Party's adoption of an American symbol of the revolution -- a gun -- is a hypocritical repudiation of this nation's particular embrace of principle.

It forgets the aggressive ideals of the civil rights movement and the anti-war movement. Such calls for Norman Rockwell's vocabulary is the sugar coating of the struggle for equality that remembers only Martin Luther King Jr. and forgets H. Rap Brown, Stokely Carmichael, and the Malcolm X.

It remembers Hubert Humphrey but forgets Abbie Hoffman. It memorializes Mothers for Peace but forgets Students for a Democratic Society.

    -SNIP-

"America's refusal to address mental illness institutionalized homelessness and yields a deadly cocktail of rampant drug abuse and violence that we are too civil to discuss frankly (In San Francisco a census of the homeless population was crippled when auditors were not allowed to ask street people if they were homeless because these words were not considered civil.)

The problem isn't outspoken and outrageous Tea Party remarks; the problem is the silent majority. (When people step over the line, arrest them. But for crying out loud, The New York Times editorialized today against someone hanging a politician in effigy).

    -SNIP-

Jared Loughner was thrown out of Pima Community College because he was so menacingly disturbed. Loughner was told he could not come back to the junior college unless he saw a mental health counselor.

The problem isn't that Sarah Palin asked the faithful to reload.

    The problem is mental illness.

The problem isn't the Second Amendment.

The problem is that we have let crazy people exercise the Second Amendment.

There are numerous articles regarding Loughner that have not had national media play if anyone wants to do a simple google search. In particular, Loughner seems to have been obsessed with Giffords, the person for quite a while.

Congresswoman Giffords Shooter Obsessed with Giffords Since 2007

    http://driftwood1.newsvine.com/_news/2011/01/10/5805201-congresswoman-giffords-shooter-obsessed-with-giffords-since-2007

In any case, I am done....this thread can go back to the Palin/Bachman bashing in peace.

I had checked back in for the recipes, but I can see that was a mistake.

Blue, I think I am all of them!!  Love the pic!!

World, you may live in AZ, but I sincerely doubt that the news agencies have ignored the fact that mental illness was a cause of the shooting.

I think we all agreed several pages ago that the 'right' was not responsible for the actual shootings.  We were more in agreement that both sides need to tone down the rhetoric.

Perhaps the anger and hate speech is not directly resulting in violence.  However, as a member of the international community, I can tell you that the exposure that the extremes of both sides are getting makes it look like America is coming apart at the seams.

    Hi prettyinpink100 -

You said, "However, as a member of the international community, I can tell you that the exposure that the extremes of both sides are getting makes it look like America is coming apart at the seams..."

And THAT is the reason I think I should move to Canada!  Is it my imagination, or are all you Canadians around here just so freakin' reasonable ?!  I wanna be a Canadian when I grow up!

Bluedahlia, thanks, but I think I'd better not get started over here  -  sadly, I'm not nearly as good about self-restraint regarding politics as I am about some other controversial subjects I post about, believe it or not!  Sealed

Oh, and I was gonna say I identify with all those dwarves, but I'm no longer chemopausal plus I've been accused of being an "intellectual dwarf," so maybe there are more than seven??
