I say yes, you say no, OR People are Strange

WR, I've always wondered the same thing.
I have a serious problem tolerating blatant factual errors. I almost started a thread in the "Suggestions" forum once, to ask the Mods what we should do if someone posted egregiously false information -- e.g., the initial "Don't Do It" post, or posts promoting the curative (preventive?) effects of coffee enemas, or a post & subsequent thread proclaiming that what we call "cancer" is actually a fungal infection, etc. That stuff makes my skin crawl.
But, I chickened out, because I knew what would happen. (Visualize one of those tape-over-mouth pics someone famously posts when she thinks she's being muzzled.) I occasionally slipped in to tweak a fact or two as unobtrusively as possible, but I let the rest lie there. "Not my problem," I told myself. "Not my job," either.
Still, I felt guilty, knowing what I know about some of that stuff but being unwilling to take on the hoaxes and snake-oil reps. Even writing this post makes me glance over my shoulder at my email in-box... (I could be sorry I even said this a few minutes from now.)
It appears the owners of this site have decided on a complete hands-off policy with regard to the Discussion Boards, except for enforcement of the "Rules of Conduct" through a proxy system we all agree is flawed. They don't seem to care about accuracy of the information we share with each other here. I'm actually okay with that, because I'm idealistic enough to think there is self-policing most of the time, and blatant errors will eventually be corrected, or at least questioned... except in certain forums, of course.
A couple of research papers came out about on-line forums when I was in active treatment and was a regular here. IIRC, both papers said the same thing: vibrant forums are usually policed by the members themselves; factual errors in posts are caught and corrected. It's the same theory used in small-group problem-solving classes: the students are expected to question each others' statements and correct the mistakes themselves while the facilitator sits there poker-faced.
I am not so good at poker.

I have to admit I have been lurking here to see what you guys are having for dinner .. . .it's like the food network for me (lol).
revkat: I feel exactly like you do. I refuse to use any Stoneyfield products because of that booklet. The worst thing I see is the statement "We believe prevention is the cure". No, prevention is not a cure and prevention is not possible for most of us.
-
I can only think of one thing to do with kale and it's not pretty.
And yes I try to eat well .
-
You may not be good at poker, Otter, but you are very good at providing accurate and factual information. About sweet potatoes as well as breast cancer
It's only 2:00 so I haven't figured out dinner yet. I may have to go to the grocery store first. . . I hate when that happens.
Oh and yes, my sick chard is just sick chard. But I also noticed that my green peppers are doing very well. So what can you make with pepper and green beans?
-
Hmmm.... nothing good on the menu tonight -- we need to get rid of some blah leftovers.
But, last night, dh grilled some nice, thick fillets of lake trout and served 'em with sweet corn and a baked potato. Not a baked sweet potato, unfortunately -- when he cooks, it's nearly always Irish potatoes (the cook gets to decide the menu).
I did whip up some Krusteaz Pecan Bars last night for a snack during our Netflix movie. Quick and easy, and they taste like pecan pie (or so dh says, and he ought to know 'cause his mom bakes a mean pecan pie).
Personally, I think the Krusteaz Lemon Bars are way better but I didn't have enough eggs. Now, if I can just figure out how to dress up those leftovers...

[Edited to change "filet" to "fillet": one if by land, two if by sea. Oops. Didn't mean to get that one going again!]

Dinner has been catch as I can, my DH has been really sick since last weekend. We had our 35 anniversary last weekend, and he got food poisoning. It's been a loong week.
-
Awww.... food poisoning from an anniversary dinner? ((((kira1234)))) ((((kira's hubby))))
[I deleted my cat story -- it brought back bad memories, and was not particularly appropriate. Okay, it was absolutely true, but in poor taste. Yes.]
-
Revkat - green sweet peppers? Scalloped peppers are really good. I can assure you they're not on the BC prevention diet, though. LOL Lots of butter, shredded cheddar and Ritz cracker crumbs.
-
(((hillck))) (((kira)))

Food poisoning sucks. So sorry for your hubby (and you), kira.
Revkat: if you have some potatos and canned tuna on hand, green beans and green peppers are great together in salade nicoise. And you could throw in some capers, too. Yum.

We went to the beach for the weekend. We had really great food at all the restaurants we went to till the morning we left. I will never eat at that place again. Other than that we had a great time. My DH has been in bed since Tuesday when we got home. He is on antibiotics. They gave him fluids in the hospital on Friday. Kept him overnight, and then sent him home.
-
Oh kira that's awful.
-
Laughing at everyone who eats capers - I just look at one & my ankles start to swell. BUT, I do buy them for friends, cuz this HUGE glass jar of them - 32 fld. oz. - is only $5. at Costco. Worth the yearly membership if you eat a lot of them. Then, of course, there is the candy - I'm not allowed to walk down that aisle.
Revkat - at one time a letter, phone call to Stoneyfield in NH might have made a difference. But now that the "sweet little family owned company" ( you'll gag if you go to their "homey" website) is 85% owned by a French company, Group Danone - largest yogurt manufacturer in world, HUGE plant in midwest USA too. SO, no surprise Stoneyfield has jumped on the PinkWash band wagon. One of those "let's try to make some money off of BC, and I too scream NO when I see the logo. That "prevention is the cure" really MUST go. Been tempted to picket the Trader Joe's in Hadley MA, cuz they sell so much SF. Would get a crowd in a second with one sign - "pinkwashing"but truth is I'm too lazy. I just write a lot about it, and have gotten several folks to join me in not buying anything they make
-
I'm sorry but I think "Prevention is the Cure" is a slap in the face of 99% of the participants on this board. It would be diffent if anyone had a clue how to prevent BC.
-
Alpal,
you were posting while I was editing my usual typos. I AGREE - and, maybe if enough of us, start making a fuzz in our local communities - they might notice?????
-
Sorry your DH is sick Kira - give him a hug from us
Turns out red sweet potatoes are Japanese - fancy that. I found a pic. I'm glad the sweet potato talk has lifted some spirits.
I'm at my desk starting a new work week - no rest for the wicked

And special hugs going out to our Blue .. who was just permanently banned from this site.

(((hillck)))) - I am so sorry to hear about your reconstruction failure and the fact that you have to go in for an exchange again. I had a good experience, but so many things can go wrong so very easily that I feel nothing short of lucky. Just please keep us posted. I hope you have been going to the reconstruction forums. There are some extremely knowledgeable sisters (whippetmom is one I would recommend). I haven't been on them lately but they have great information. Timtam's forum is also a great resource that I highly recommend.
And speaking of facts: Otter, I couldn't agree with you more. Not that we all don't make mistakes, but at least we act in good faith. More than misstatements, though, I hate lies and deliberate twistings. Far too much of that lately on BCO.
-
Bren - can you PM me Blue's email address if you think she won't mind - I have a suggestion for her.
-
Blue banned forever?
This is nuts. I know this is being done to drive people away but Blue oh come on people.
-
What???? Blue banned?
The only thing I can say is that if, as I suspect, the mods have IT equipment operating from another country, time favors Blue, because I am HOPING that they will kick back the automatic system ban and restore her.
I'm so sick of this no-reform policy. I feel utterly, utterly betrayed.
I even started a fundraising site and gave many sleepless night to the effort. The mods promised us reform and briefly delivered some cookies, only to throw it all away without telling us. As for Blue, she started this superb thread, which is responsible for making me feel happy, secure and cherished because it has attracted all of you wonderful women. Thank you Blue!! And thanks to all of you.
This also confirms my suspicion that BCOs people don't like threads like ours (even though they created a "growing our friendsships..." forum). They would prefer BC-only discussions and no intellectually challenging ones about other topics. And so by doing nothing, they allow the system's inherent weaknesses to kick in. This is a system that penalizes the strong and favors the petty. If people like Blue and me and many of us here just left, I think they would be happy. It makes me very sad to grudgingly reach that conclusion after months of refusing to acknowledge it to myself.
Edited for typos - as usual! Grrrr.
-
Blue banned I can't believe. She has been here since I joined. There is something really wrong going on.
-
WTF - Blue is BANNED? Forever???? Who decided that and why. I just checked another thread where everyone has been camped for two days talking about reporting, etc. and the latest suggestion from two of the posters was those of us who are having problems should start our own website. I am seriously ticked off tonight - where are the mods?????
-
Sandy .. I don't think the mods are in over the weekend. The only way you can get banned is if people repeatedly 'report' your posts. This is such a monumental problem. Long time members and newbies alike have been 'reported' all weekend.
I hope the mods can get this mess straightened out tomorrow.
Bren

The email to Blue was an automated one -- I have PM'd the Mods and hopefully they can fix this. But as Blue and I and so many of us have been saying for ages -- either the "report this post" button should be deleted, or the names of reporters should be visible -- and deletions/suspensions/bannings shouldn't happen automatically based solely on anonymous reporting.
-
Sandy -
The troublemakers always choose the weekend, when the moderators aren't at their posts, to start their reporting sprees. That way, their targets are inconvenienced for a few days rather than overnight.
What troubles me most about this is that KK and Blue were good friends, and the troublemakers chose the week of KK's death to attack Blue. Nothing like twisting the knife, eh?
-
As I said earlier, I think the mods don't like this thread either - Bren and Lindasa (referring to your comment on the other thread) - I think the poster who suggested that is not alone. And there lies our problem. People wish we would just go away. They prefer a boring forum with plaint little girls, or something. Or women only expressing their suffering from BC so that BCO can collect more funds. Think Pink!
-
Blue banned? Good grief...
-
Ah, trigger fingers! If only that were the reason.....I had trigger finger when I first started Femara. Didn't make my finger wander up to the Report this Post button though.
