Well, since the stock market closed at a record high and the employment numbers have improved, isn't it time to impeach Obama? Benghazi!!
-
Gator Gal, we will do that just as soon as we sue him because he is going to do something the GOP should have done quite a while back. How dare him.....why using Executive Orders wily-nily like that as though he had a right too.

We are at the race track and will be watching fireworks tonight. Tomorrow we're going to MIL's. We're taking potato salad, raspberries, smoked salmon dip and a bottle of white wine.
My great grandfather fought in the civil war. I watch soccer. Ann Coulter makes money from making stupid statements. I don't think she's stupid, I just think she's mean and cares more about putting money in her own pocket than she cares about the country. Of course, that same statement can be made about a great many people, she's just a very visible one.

I think we are going over to my BIL's tomorrow. Cough, sputter, gulp......the one who gave up being a Republican because it got too painful for him. So.....uh....he aligned himself with the Tehadists. Really got far afield there...
Anyway.....I will take Grape Salad because if I don't everyone will be upset, and also cold Spaghetti Salad....because I will be upset because no one makes that either. Probably a Pineapple Angel Food Cake because it is low in calories and easy to make ( no icing needed ). I have lost about 38 #'s and won't make a real pig out of myself, but on holidays.....I allow myself to over-do up to a point. I will work a couple of hours tomorrow, but I never mind that......just feel great that I still can find a little work. Actually knock on wood....just sitting here thinking.....we have been home now going on 17 yrs. and I've yet to fill out an application. Frankly....not sure if I'd know how. Truth is....I do have a really good friend who knows exactly how I work and she knows just about everyone in this town and the minute she hears that I'm not working.......she calls up and asks if I am ok that she gives my number out. I have always had good positions this way.

Hi Gal Pals,
Happy 4th of July! It's a gorgeous day here ... the storm last night blew in cooler temps and lower humidity today. Got up early to walk the dogs and do a bunch of yard work before it warms up. I'm hoping Tim makes it home sometime today. If not, I have a huge editing project that needs to be done. Good thing I charge this particular doctor by the hour!
Gumby ... thinking about Ann Coulter turns my stomach. She is completely self-serving with all her idiotic tirades.
Jackie ... that is so neat that you haven't had to fill out an application or create a resume in all those years. And you are able to keep on working just through word of mouth. I hadn't either for about 14 years until the last year or two when I had to find more work and look for a job working for someone else. You really get spoiled working for yourself and setting your own hours.
Hope everyone has a really great day.
hugs,
Bren

Good Morning -- and it is a pretty one here. Our temps. are staying down along with the humidity so we are thinking today will be marvelous. I hope everyone else will have just as good as a day. I cooked all my food for the barbecue last night.
May throw a cake in the oven the minute I get home from work today. The easy one.....with a can of crushed pineapple into the dry angel food cake -- then into the over for about an hr. and viola' dessert. Lots of lo-cal flavor and that suits me fine.
Bren --- I have indeed been so fortunate. Because my friend is so well known....she always steers me to the really great positions. I did work at the Realty Company for 8 yrs. ( tried selling real estate, but didn't care for it. ) and did get that job myself --- but I didn't fill out an application for the job. Just sort of fell into it as I lived by the owner of the company. It is one of the beauties of small town living --- everyone knows everyone else. They soon know you too. Of course, being born and raised here ( though I left at 18 and never came back -- even on vacation ) doesn't hurt. That gave me a foot up just because and saved me so much time in getting my foot in doors. Helped that I didn't need too for a long time.
See you all later.

I'm having a relaxing 4th. Right now bird and deer watching on the back patio. Oldest son and his wife are coming tomorrow for Maryland crabs so today is a day of r & r. Not that I don't have plenty of paperwork to catch up on and should clean out my closet now that I've lost two sizes. Gained 30 pounds on AI's the first two years on this journey and have now lost it on chemo. Feel better at this size but family all worried because I've lost weight. Have to remind them that I gained it first!! It is a beautiful day and I don't want to go in. We had a big storm go through here last night but today is cooler and just the right amount of breeze. Being lazy feels right!! American friends, have a great 4th whatever your plans! Brenda, hope Tim makes it home!!

Happy 4th everyone!! Just finished making my potato salad, next is the smoked salmon dip. Wine and berries are chilling in the fridge. Then we can relax til we leave for MIL's house. GREAT fireworks last night!!

Happy Independence from anything you don't want to do Day. Our heat, humidity and rain is leaving to be replaced by cooler weather and sunshine. We may even have to have a fire in our kitchen range tomorrow morning. I believe it is the first year we have ever used it this late in the summer. Climate change? No, never.
I am planning on spending the rest of the day finishing a book and watching the Red Sox play. I love lazy.
Am enjoying reading everyone's plans and all about the FOOD.
-
GatorGal....don't think I've ever said how much I love your signature line. Several on the thread here that speak to me.

GatorGirl ... I finally heard from Tim ... he should be home about 3:30 this afternoon. I haven't planned anything for dinner tonight. He'll just have to forage. We'll bbq some burgers tomorrow.Brigadoon ... The weather this morning was fabulous. But, it's beginning to get really hot and humid again. It was a fluke that I was able to open all the windows earlier today. Have the A/C running now.
Gumby ... Sounds like you're going to have some wonderful food and fun watching the fireworks.
Jackie ... Congrats on the 38 pound weight loss. I lost 45 about 1 1/2 years ago. I have since put 6 lbs back on. It's really frustrating. It was so much easier the first six months I was calorie counting. I have a real hard time with my willpower when it comes to sweets and chocolate. And Tim always likes to have that stuff around. arghhh.
I was really busy this morning, so I'm going to do "lazy" the rest of the day. Tim leaves Sunday early, so I can edit that huge report Sunday a.m.
hugs,
Bren

Well, glad to hear this http://www.addictinginfo.org/2014/07/04/female-justices-get-together-to-write-blistering-dissent-of-new-contraceptive-case/ as the men who did it really should get an earful and maybe more. Wonder how many yrs. of work will come from just this one idiot decision.

Well good for them. However they refer to using common sense - not something that happens a lot in respect to religious beliefs and human rights.
So, if this case is precedent setting, any recognized religion can dictate what rights and freedoms they wish to deny based on whatever their particular beliefs are. Seems the doors are now opened for all the extremists that have the righteous crowd all freaked out (not including Chritian extremists, of course!)
-
If a company feels that they can't support health insurance for abortion or contraception does that affect whether they purchase from vendors who do provide it because part of their money is being used for the vendor's business expenses?
China, as a country, provides both of those services to Chinese women. How many of the products in Hobby Lobby are purchased from Chinese companies? Those companies pay taxes to the Chinese government. Hobby Lobby doesn't seem to have a problem with that. It seems that their objection only goes as far as their employees but not their bottom line. Seems very hypocritical to me.
If Quakers don't believe in war and 1/3 of federal expenditures go to support the Defense Department would a Quaker owned company be exempt from paying 1/3 of their tax bill?
Is it possible to sue the Supreme Court for discrimination because this ruling is so narrowly applied and doesn't consider other deeply held beliefs?
Now that this door has been opened I don't see how other religious persons deeply held convictions can be discriminated against. The separation of church and state is essentially over.
-
Brig - Add to that the fact that Hobby Lobby's employee retirement fund is HEAVILY invested in the companies that make the very products -- including the morning-after pill -- that they refuse to subsidize their own employees to obtain!
After reading various articles about this Supreme Court decision, I think that what should make folks the angriest is that certain justices are listening to the "opinions" of the evangelicals, rather than the "facts" of the scientists in making their decisions.
Or is this a case of justices simply being entitled to their own opinions.........?
-
Jackie, thanks, I like your signature line, too. It's always been one of my favorites.
Crazy for carrots, I think your last statement is right on!
-
Some buffoons just can't and won't get better. In this case evading the REAL question did nothing but make this ONE look way less good as he hoped. It is more that it showed how HOPELESS he is for workable solutions......no way to run for POTUS if you ask me. If I were him I'd drop any idea or running for office as quickly as I could.
Always a total amazement when things like this get said -- and they go on as if nothing happened because no one noticed. REALLY !!! http://www.addictinginfo.org/2014/07/05/rick-perry-thought-he-had-perfect-solution-to-illegal-immigration-until-someone-asked-him-to-explain-it/
-
GatorGal -- I should have added "....and their own biases".
And if this is really the case, and is accepted by Americans, then there is really no point in having a Supreme Court. Perhaps better to dispense with it altogether and rely on those democratically elected to decide what is legal and what is not. After all, the SC justices answer to no one but each other.
Of course, with today's do-nothing Congress........
-
This SC is very scary. They seem to dislike women and Native Americans. In a 1990 ruling, they sided with the state of Oregon for not granting unemployment benefits to a Native American who was fired for using peyote in a religious ritual, so Congress passed the Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 1993 (RFRA) in response to that SCOTUS ruling - and to prevent future religious discrimination, including specifically allowing use of peyote for NA spiritual practices. Then comes Hobby Lobby who sues based on RFRA and Alioto uses RFRA in the majority argument, and I assume Citizens United (giving Corporations personhood) to justify exempting for-profit corporations from the regulations under Obamacare to provide contraception.
Hmmm....religious freedom not good enough for SCOTUS when it applies to Native Americans; now use the mitigating law by Congress to beat up women. Big winner? Corporations.
Not so minor of a point. These Activists judges really are just twisting themselves in a knot to chip away at Obamacare.
I agree, they might as well do away with the Supreme Court with these 5 in control. It's just a Republican rubberstamp.
-
Scary indeed, QuinnCat. Check out www.motherjones.com for an article entitled "Hobby Lobby's Not Alone: Here Are 4 of the High Court's Biggest Science Blunders".
(Sorry, my Mac still isn't compatible enough to post the link directly to the article).
We in Ontario are being faced with a few physicians working in walk-in clinics who are refusing to write scripts for birth control. They claim their "conscience"(meaning, their religion) is forbidding them to do so. Given that we taxpayers are responsible for their income (not to mention in large part also for their medical education), and given that we firmly expect them to fulfill ALL their responsibilities as physicians and NOT to discriminate, I'm hoping that the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (their medical governing body) will lay down some hard and fast rules to stop this behaviour in its tracks.
If not, as some have suggested a Jehovah's Witness doc could claim he's within his rights to withhold needed blood transfusions, or a evangelical homophobe could claim he's within his rights not to treat any LGBT patients.
Does it seem too often that, once religion enters the picture, common sense and, too often, compassion, are shoved out the back door?
