My daughter in law had her first horse cremated and plans to scatter his ashes over their farm when they finally settle. There's over 40 pounds of ashes there.

I burried my dog. Came home from chemo, in the middle of June and she had passed away while I was gone. Took a shovel, wrapped her in her blanket and got her bear (only a rope toy but she thought it was a bear) and a bottle of wine. Had to wait till after dark because it was so hot and I knew I'd pass out if I tried to dig a grave in that heat. Dug the grave on the corner of the property line and had myself a huge pity party. The grandkids always go down to the grave and put flowers on a few times each year. They think it's neet to have a "grave yard" at Gran's.

I still mourn my darling Athena and it has been almost five years. Hers is the biggest photograph frame in my apartment. She was a gorgeous yellow lab.

Ladies, I'm for the bed now. It's been good, going down memory lane with you. Our pets have provided us with one more connection besides this horid disease and for that we can all be grateful. You know animals don't just take to everyone and from what I can tell, we all had some pretty smart 4 legged friends.

Notself, what a beautiful, moving story. Blue, Erica and Konakat, good idea about the ashes. I did not have Athena's kept, but I did have them cremate her favourite tennis ball along with her body.

It isn't just this disease that unites us.  It is common shared compassion.  This has been a surprising couple of pages.

    Good night and sweet dreams.

Oh, this thread moves so fast!

I wanted to say something about the No-Kill Shelters.  We have one here in Virginia that my daughters and I have volunteered at and I think they do an incredible job.  At FOHA they do spay and neuter the animals before adoption and they have a program specifically for the dogs that have been there the longest, to highlight them and promote adoption.  Our Newfy mix, Marshall, came from there...

Hi!  I've been "lurking" since your other thread. Remembered Blue & Bin names and finally found this thread. I know nothing about most of the enlightening subjects you DISCUSS and learn sooo much from all of you. I am a 3 fingered typist so I dont join in but thoroughly, thoroughly enjoy listening to all of you. In my minds ear you all have different voices, just like reading a book.  Please don't ever give up on this thread, you All are educational in one way or another and I sincerely THANK YOU.  kar

Morning all, off to work in a few. The news is full of protests and death this morning. Sort of normal lately. Hope everyone has a safe and happy day. BarbaraA, how is the brother doing? Hope all is improving. Will check in later.

Morning Kadeeb, thanks for asking about Dave. He has been in a regular room since Friday and is enjoying the hospital food (there's a good one). He has been doing PT since his muscles atrophied. I think they are going to release him tomorrow. I am down to once a day to the hospital and that has relieved some stress for me.

Blue, love the pic. But it caught me off guard. I was somehow expecting to see our darling JIM smiling at us!!

I had to euthanize my neighbor's cat once while cat-sitting when they were hiking in Europe. Fortunately, we could chat by email, and I knew her wishes. I got a buddy and a shovel, a bottle of wine and some daffodil bulbs. Planted poor Punky on the hillside, and now she pushes up flowers every spring...

My friend had that cat for 16 years. Burying Punky would have been so hard for her to do...

Thank you ladies for the compliments.  I'm a little plumper now, since my surgery, and my hair is growing in (more grey than brown...guess the surgery scared me more than I realized hehehehe).  I always grew up with dogs, as my dad is a hunter.  They were big dogs usually german short haired pointers.  We had one that had such a keen sense of smell he found the school I attended and waited for me every day to walk me home.

Anne that was such a nice thing to do for your neighbour! Jim's kinda shy so I'll keep him to myself.  haha!

Barbara, so glad your bro is on the mend.

Barbara - that is excellent news. I was never clear on exactly what happened, but I hope his doctors were (lol) and that your brother is not NED but CURED.

Blue, I am not a small dog person at all, but yours is a lovely one. I will try to scan in a picture of Athena. My pictures of her hail from the pre-digital era.

Off to the doctor's, then to the club on this day off for me. It feels like a luxury.

Athena, he had pneumonia but it was abating however, he could not breathe so I took him to the ER. They admitted him and did a CT scan and saw a 7 inch mass of infection wrapped around his trachea, larnyx and thyroid. Emergency surgery the on ventilator in ICU for 8 days. The ICU for 3 more days and healing well now in a regular room. Whew. Close call according to the surgeon.

    Blue:

How lucky you were growing up!  We had a family dog (Trixie) mixed breed (boy, was she ever) large and sweet and well trained (thanks Mom) BUT on the next street lived HEIDI a German Short Hair Pointer and I LOVED her - I used to go over to the house after school and sit on the front stairs and hug and pat my beloved Heidi - I even went to far as to ask my parents if we could get one - of course the answer was no - this was the early 50s and people just didn't have two large dogs in the city.

This was my Bo.  I miss him so much.  He was a big boy and the love of my life.  I had him cremated and keep him on my counter along with his picture.

It appears we may have finished discussing what is happening in Wisconsin, however, Phyllis Schlafly is back in the news.

Phyllis Schlafly has recently been interviewed by Beverly Willett, a writer and former attorney.  The article covers a lot of topics but I thought this one would be worth discussing.  Mrs. Schlafly is the conservative writer who helped stopped the Equal Rights Amendment. To refresh everyone's memory here are some quotes.

"Sexual harassment on the job is not a problem for virtuous women."

"What I am defending is the real rights of women. A woman should have the right to be in the home as a wife and mother."

Here is the article. The bold is mine.

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/beverly-willett/feminists-love-divorce_b_825208.html

    "Do we need divorce reform?

Phyllis: Yes. We need to restore fault-based reasons to justify divorce. When a man and woman stand up before witnesses and solemnly swear to love and cherish, forsaking all others, 'till death do us part, do they mean it, or are they lying?

The best way to reduce divorce is to legislate 50-50 joint custody of children, unless evidence proves one parent unfit. It would eliminate the current incentive to one parent, usually the woman, who now believes she can walk out on all marital obligations, taking the kids and the income of the other parent."

I've never been divorced so I am very interested in hearing from women who have.

I don't know where she lives, but that's not the way it works around here, unless one of the parties chooses to roll over. Never divorced, but know many many who are.

One thing about her, she's consistent.

Anne -- I love it -- Punky pushing up flowers every spring.

Love the doggie photos.  I love going to Sharon's house -- she has a big, gorgeous chocolate lab that I love to cuddle.  He's a real love muffin.

Erica -- I hope your little buddy shows up this evening.  It is so worrisome.

Barbara -- so good to hear your brother is on the mend.  What a scare that was!
