Thanks Momine. I go to the hairdresser next week and just might try it! It will have to be a dark ash.

A tiger mother lost her cubs from premature labor. Shortly after she became depressed and her health declined, and she was diagnosed with depression. So they wrapped up piglets in tiger cloth, and gave them to the tiger. The tiger now loves these pigs and treats them like her babies. -
From a short article in Time:
This will make for some crazy family reunions. Scientists in Dubai have successfully bred a chicken with a duck’s DNA as its father. Yes, you read that right: scientists injected the cells a duck uses to produce eggs and sperm into the organs of a chicken embryo, and the chicken began to produce the duck’s sperm as it matured. Initially part of an experiment to increase hens’ fertility, scientists now say they may soon allow hens to lay eggs of other birds, including ducks, songbirds, hawks, and eagles. The larger goal: to bring back extinct species, according to a recent TED talk. The earth is sure going to look strange in the next few years.

Two big questions about this: what to name the bird (chuck? ducken?) and what sound will it make (clack?). Suggestions welcome!

Ah, these pictures are wonderful. To say, as humans being we have been 'granted dominion over the beasts' and have this interpreted > slaughterhouses, penning, putting them into extinction in the wild (i.e. destroying their habitats) is beyond me. I am fast approaching vegan status with this BC dx, but the thing that will finally put me their 100% are these wonderful gracious living beings. We need to start treating them with the same respect we would treat our brother, imho.

So it's budget day in Canada. The Finance Minister (wearing new shoes) will table a budget telling us that it is the best thing since sliced bread and will solve all sorts of problems making every one happy. The two main opposition parties (there are two more little ones) will say it's a travesty and bad things will happen if it is implemented. (Mostly, I think the opposition has many valid points.) Since there is a majority government, an arrogant one, they will pass the budget and put it in place. The Senate, with a conservative majority, might make a couple of little amendments.
If we had a minority government, they would all have to play nicely together because a defeated budget is a confidence issue and an election would have to be called. Sitting governments, particularly minority ones, want to stay sitting so they do try to keep the budget to one that will be passed. It's not very tidy and most certainly will result in many issues with which I disagree -- but I think it shows the difference between our system and the US system. (I have refrained from using adjectives for the US budget system).
-
We have a budget system? One can hope.
-
We have a system???
More like a fixed race: the GOP will bet against anything Obama, period. -
Big blow up in government here yesterday - Prime Minister challenged to hold a leadership vote and no one ran against her, so now we're stuck with the b%^th until September when the election is. The bloke she stabbed in the back a couple of years ago didn't have the guts to run against her again. I'm happy because keeping her as leader will ensure a massive defeat.

Kam, you express my sentiments EXACTLY

Chickadee - Yes Maroochydore is a real place north of Brisbane on the Sunshine Coast, but I find it hard to believe they would have a message like that. The woman sounds English. I could always try calling them on the weekend to see if it's real

-
Cool Suzy. I'm sure if it were real it might make the news down there. Maroochydore is cool to pronounce.

Checking in from Vermont. Ate cake samples and looked at flowers today. My DD liked the cake and she's hard to please. Hooray. Lovely day. Now have a fire going and contemplating making a salad.
On gun control; shame on the Dems for being gutless cowards and dropping the assault weapon ban. The Repugns are going to vote anything related to gun safety down anyway, so why not go for broke - unless you're a total wimp.
Nice to know that Millie made it to Time and to Oregon. I like to think that somewhere she's just beaming over all the fuss.
-
Alexandria, I'm proud to have learned about her. You were lucky to have her in your life!
You're welcome ladies.

Blue, my favorite today was the prayer one. Too sweet!!!!

Suzie, I found the Snopes reference. Oddly enough it originated over an attendance policy at a Los Angeles charter school dust up and has reappeared in different variations since.

I am furious at Harry Reid! He needs to be replaced as leader of the Senate.
