No activity here for the last 4 hours ... did everyone go to sleep or something like that. Lou Lou Lemon ... great yoga wear .. made right here in Canada. I'm sure it will be coming to an American store near you soon. Or you might have to make a trip up here to Canada. ......the Olypics are going to be in Vancouver very soon. The torch just came through Toronto.

Okay, tea-bagging I got from a Joan Rivers stand-up act. Is that the meaning we're implying here? I almost swallowed my glass when I heard her (obviously I was drinking at the time)! My DH is 59 and I've been wondering.....

Poutine is AMAZING! But then, I'm half French Canadian. Elizabeth, you're closer to Quebec than me...it'll sink into your system any time now. And NO! Cottage cheese and cheese curds are totally different but kinda the same! How's that for being a diplomatic Canadian? Eh?

Someone hasn't put gravy on their fries???? I just had that tonight as part of dinner. How could you live to be old enough to know how to use the internet and not know how good it is??? French fries are made of potatoes. So are mashed potatoes. Kind of like comparing apples to apples. Wink Yah gotta try it girlfriends!

And no, we Canadians wouldn't have welcomed Hitler with open arms.....

edited to change my DH's age. I've been in denial for a year...he turns 60 next year! I'm married to an old man....sigh

Oh, and meant to add Aero chocolate bars to the list of what you guys don't have "down there". (Wow, does that ever bring a new meaning to "down there", doesn't it? Embarassed)

And for those of you who think Cadbury is Canadian after saying it is British. The Queen is not really our Queen anymore. We just let her keep her picture on our money until she...uh....dies.

A toque is just a shorter way of saying very long knitted cap that ends in a point with a pom pom...y'all do wear them. They're made in China.

Ooooh! The Japanese beer from Guelph....well, for those who don't know, or realize...Wink Guelph is a major port city that can import beer directly from Japan without stopping in Vancouver first! Way to go Guelph!

Well let's not forget about the vinegar on our french fries.  Most Americans think it is weird.  I have often considered buying a vinegar store and getting them all hooked on it.  "Not just for salads" would be my motto!

I guess that's why the New York Fries stores don't have gravy...I wondered...

Sorry to be an American lurker, but did stop by to see what the commotion was about.  Too many pages so skipped to this last one.  Barbe you have me so nostalgic for my time spent in Canada.  (I picked up using eh? after a question and haven't ever lost it, it just plain works better then so many other ways of phrasing things)  Have had gravy on my fries, but much prefer vinegar, which you can't get here as easily.  Miss cheese curds, back bacon, tea and biscuits, and so many other things.  But, now you have me craving Cadbury chocolate.  I really don't eat sweets, but, no one makes it better.  Still think Huntsville Ontario is one of the prettiest places in North America. Those glaciers sure knew what they were doing when they created Muskoka.

I am off to work now.  You girls play nice.  I see that 'liberals'  (does that include us Canadian socialists?) are being compared to child molesters on the 'other' Healthcare thread.  Nice.  Really nice.

Barbe, I was just about to add aero bars to the list, too!  My dd loves 'em.  That used to be another thing we'd stock up on whenever we went to Canada.  (Imagine a weary driver, trying to stay alert  for the last, dreary stretch of the 401 heading to Windsor, being jarred into a full waking state by an urgent voice from the back seat: "Mom, we need to find a store!  We forgot to get aero bars!  Please please please!  We HAVE to get some!  I'll DIE if we don't get some!")  Sheesh.  It's a wonder I don't HATE  Canada!

I had never had poutine until this past summer's Quebec trip because, well, it sounded disgusting.  And looked disgusting.  (Shudder.)  But I ordered some in a little diner just for kicks, and you know what?  That bizarro combination of french fries, brown gravy and squeaky cheese curds actually works.  It was - surprise, surprise - delicious.  (I can't comment on all the variations - poutine italienne with tomato sauce, poutine with smoked meat, barbecue poutine, etc. etc.  They still sound awful to me.)

Oh, and in further confirmation of the Canadian plot for world (or at least continental) domination, you can now get poutine in Brooklyn.  And a smoked meat place is coming soon.  The NOIVE!   Thinking they can school Brooklynites in pastrami!

Rico, I'm not sure how much snow is on the ground here in NYC this morning.  A lot.  Ten inches or so, supposedly.  Parts of Long Island got 2 feet.  I'm looking out the window, trying to figure out whether it's worth trying to get a run in this morning.

(BF and DD were getting annoyed at me for spending so much time on line last night, so I shut the computer down and missed, like, three pages of posts.)

Tea bags and pom poms all around!  And don't bruise the kiwis!

    Linda

    Good morning!

THe sun's finally out and it's bright and beautiful here.  How much snow?  It HAS to be two feet or more.

Man, I have a headache this morning.  I guess it's a hangover from all the laughing last night.  :-)

    Have a great Sunday, ladies!

I know . . . I never knew there could be something better than pastrami.  Then I had smoked meat.

kmmd, because everyone loves the loons, we put them on our dollar coins and we are all a little loony.

Aero bars are now considered health food because they now also come in dark chocolate which is a good food group for us.

Have a good Sunday everyone. Still no snow in Toronto.

Oh my goodness, I've been ROTFLMAO!!!!  And to think I watched SNL last night instead -- ha, this thread was far, far funnier!  You guys are just the best -- everyone should be so lucky to have such wonderful cyberfriends!

No snow in Niagara either, but I'm imagining a foot, two feet of the fluffy white stuff (oops, I mean 25-40 centimetres --- when ARE you Yanks going to go metric like the REST of the world??) -- bet it looks so prettySmile.

no vinegar on French Fries?! and not gravy either?! What in heck is the point of Fries??  Living in the US for a couple of years as a kid, I missed that great American omission. We moved there from Germany where the vinegar on fries was something I've never found again - drat - it was sooo good.

I've been lurking here, stopped to look up meanings of things, laughed and giggled - might have frightened the resident ancient cat - and still, no new snow here with lots in usually snowless parts of the US. The world might be as upside down as I imagined!

Good morning!  Who knew a Sarah Palin thread could turn into so much fun!  I actually forgot for a while that my frickin' sofa and bookcase never showed up -- scheduled for yesterday morning.  I'm once again trapped at home waiting for a call back on when the stuff will arrive (after making 4 calls yesterday, a trip back to Ikea and 2 calls this morning).  I'm trapped -- yesterday I wanted to get a cell phone but didn't want to miss getting my couch. Ha!  Joke's on me!!

I'm trying to draft a snotty email to Ikea -- I've decided to pull the cancer card and having a hard time working it in.  Something along the line that this may be my last holiday season and I'm stuck waiting for a cheap Ikea couch since what's the point of actually buying a good one since I won't be around to enjoy it...  I'm angling for a big pity gift certificate for all the frickin' frustration...  Any help would be appreciated -- PM or post here if you like!   Now I'm all worked up again... Grrrrr!

Oh I think you've got it just right in your draft idea, Elizabeth! It is time to pull out the pity card and make them hop to with, at the very least, a gift certifcate - or maybe you could suggest that they should get you the cell phone so you won't be trapped at home waiting for them.

And then use the couch for many years to come!

Oh yes, french fries (pommes frites!!) doused in malt vinegar and salt!  That's how we always got them at country fairs -- no ketchup or gravy to be seen.  Served in a pointy-bottomed paper cup.  The french fry truck went around from town to town, along with the carnival folks.  Those fries were SOooooo good!  Probably even more so because my mother was a dietitian and french fries never saw the inside of our houseUndecided...

Would they be okay for us if they were made with organic potatoes and fried in olive oil?

Yes! I don't know about organic, but I make fries by cutting potatoes to the right shape. put them on a baking pan and sprinkle witha  couple of tablespoons of olive oil. Really, I should be a lot thinner. A lot.
