Love the pic, Ruth!
I am back from Boston: where I walked more each day than I thought i possibly could with current knee issues....it was a half mile from son's apt to the one we rented for the week, and I walked that back and forth several times, and then of course I had to see the wonderful Museum of Fine Arts, which is big (we only made it through about a third of the exhibits before i gave up...) and then there are airports...and walking in the evening to get ice cream, of course.
It was a great trip. Found the perfect spot for son's wedding rehearsal dinner next year, checked out the wedding venue, met many of his future in-laws, and had lots of fun.
got home to messages from my ortho doc setting up pre-surgery apts for the first total knee replacement in November: I am determined that I will be dancing by the wedding next year...
But first, off for one last late summer trip...after a few days to get back on left coast time, DH and I are heading to Hawaii because airfares and condos are cheap (from West Coast) right now, and because it is our happy place. Probably won't do scuba this trip, thanks to the knees, but I do plan to spend as much time as possible in the water!

Enjoy all your travels, Octo!

KB870, what is an erger? I looked it up online and it ties it in to rowing machines. Is that a rowing machine? Just curious.
-
Two Aprils ago, my little town voted to pass a tax to fund the building of a community activity center (plus a child care center). We have been excitedly watching the construction, which is now complete. They are having Open Houses this week and will open after Labor Day. Here is a collage of some of the areas of the building. Exciting!!!!! (TRAC stands for Two Rivers Activity Center because the town was build at the crossroads of two rivers.)
-
Howbeautiful, Ruth. What a great place to live!
-
Ruth, nice! Maybe the Sculpted Sisters should come visit you some year!
Octo, glad you have pre-surgery dates. Love traveling vicariously with you. Aloha!
KB, there's nothing like a fresh-dug potato. DH has Yukon Golds in the garden this year. SO GOOD.
Great workout tonight! 108 minutes and 731 calories burned.
treadmill warmup... 60 min session with personal trainer... cool-down & yoga stretch
-
TrmTab you are my kind of teacher. I took calculus for fun in college. I was a business major and needed a math or science. LOL
-
I'm a bit behind here, but love hearing everyone's activities. Sounds like everyone who could see it enjoyed the eclipse. Scottie - good to see you! Welcome TrmTab and Brutersmom. Brutersmom - Bruter is adorable! I can't quite tell the breed from your picture, but he looks min pin or maybe doxie? Trm - I love yin yoga. Unfortunately my instructor moved, and I haven't been able to find another one close by. Octo - what a wonderful Boston trip you had! Badger - love your technicolor workout charts! Ruth - seriously envious of your new community center.
I've been keeping up with activities, but didn't make the eclipse 5K. I'd had my normal fitness class that morning, and it was just too darned HOT to get outside later to do more. We were at 82% here so it was a decent show. Yesterday I went with the Rec Senior Travel group on a canoe trip to a local wetlands wildlife sanctuary. It was beautiful - we saw osprey, great blue herons, kingfishers, and tons of red winged-blackbirds, plus lots of butterflies, native plants including wild rice, and of course fish. It was so serene and lovely, but paddling a canoe for 3 hours straight is quite a workout ! It's beautiful here today so I just got back from a nice 3 mile walk to help loosen up the muscles from yesterday.
This is an overview of the wetlands:
and the view on the water from the canoe:
It was a great experience, but as you can imagine, we needed a lot of bug spray! It's so remote and wild - hard to believe it's only about 20 miles from the hustle and bustle of DC!
-
Natsfan, sounds like a beautiful paddle. Kingfishers and herons are two of my favorites. Just waitung for nipples to heal so that I can kayak again. Hiked uphill last night for stress relief (with Murphy, of course). We have had our house on the market all summer
And wouldn't you know it we get an offer right before school starts! Find out today if they accept our counteroffer. Closing would be when we are taking oldest DD to college. Why can you have nothing going on for months, then everything happens at once? I am really trying to keep from letting it overwhelm me as I don't want it to affect my health. Also my 80 year old mother disowned me because she lives next door and is upset that we are moving, but refuses to go with us to new property, which btw, isn't ready to move into! Thanks for letting me vent. Exercise is the only thing keeping me sane right now.

We were asked to bring in pictures to school of us reading. This is mine with my "therapy" dog, Murphy.
-
OHHHH......so sweet!!!!! Somewhere I have a great picture of DS when he was about 5 years old reading to one of our cats.
Speaking of cats, my crabby 18 year old cat, Henry, has died at the age of 18. We are very sad (not so much for him because he was having multiple health problems) but for us as it is the end of an era.
I walked this morning & will probably go 'borrow' Stella the Grandpuppy this afternoon. A friend just moved in with DS (who owns a house) and brought along a chihuahua named Taz (for Tasmanian Devil, I presume because it is a barky little thing). I will probably bring him along too though as I think I will feel guilty leaving him behind.
-
Not too sure how the chihuahua will walk on a leash. Good luck!
Losing a pet is tough even when it is time. We got Murphy a year after Muffy passed. She was a larger, female version of Murphy.
-
The Chihuahua walked on the leash fine, but we didn't get very far because he had to pee on every tree we passed....and we were in a park!

It's a beautiful beautiful day here in the Catskill Mts. I'm sautéeing some chicken for burritos and sitting on the back porch. My plan is to go for a run before dinner. Ladies, I'm so tired. I mean my head is just heavy and I can't seem to perk myself up. I've been on Femara (letrozole) for two weeks now, switched from exemestane. Could it be the drugs bringing me down?
I see the energy in your posts and I'm vaguely familiar with it, but it seems like a memory. Peregrine, I know what you mean about unfortunate timing. Keep breathing. Keep breathing.
Chicken's done, going for that run.
Ruth, those are some cute pups. So sorry you lost your crabby guy. It is amazing that way we mark time; our pets do that for us. Time just marches on. -
Falconer, I think it is EVERYTHING that brings you down when your are 'done' with the other stuff and 'just' on an anti-hormonal. From the minute you are diagnosed until your final treatment (which for you includes the major surgery you just had), you are in a 'fight mode' and then they give you some pills and say 'have a nice life' (not really, but it feels like it at the time) and then you finally have time and you CRASH (at least I did)! Once I read that for however long you were in treatment (and I would include reconstruction in that equation), it will take that long again to bounce back.....and I would say from personal experience that you should double that amount of time. Definitely anti-hormonals can play a part (I was on Arimidex for 5 years, for me it took about 6 months for my body to adjust and feel pretty 'normal'), but some of it, anyway, is a sort of post-tramatic stress thing that everyone has to figure out how to best deal with. Sigh......sending out a hug to you.
-
Although I feel sad for those people dealing with issues such as fatigue and sadness as life "should" be returning to normal, I appreciate that you share here so when/if I face similar things I'll know it's a typical part of this process. So thank you to those who give me hope with your perkiness as well as those who help me anticipate the struggles I might face So I can be prepared.
I've been in a funk for several days. The waiting for results is wearing me down, plus I'm building a new house which will not be ready before I have to be out of the old one, thus I'll be homeless for a few weeks. And we seem to be hitting one obstacle after another, which just slows the whole thing down.
But... this morning I decided it's time to quit feeling sorry for myself, at least until I get my pathology report results. So I drove to a nearby college town and walked up and down the charming streets and alleys (I love looking at how the backyards are landscaped), then ran a quick errand before coming home to face more packing. I'm trying to remind myself to smile and keep my shoulders down and head up. I have BC, but I'm still blessed in many ways, one of which is being part of this community.
-
Ruth, sorry about your kitty. May he be frolicking on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge with other beloved pets.
-
Thanks, Mommy. Here's a picture collage of beautiful, crabby Henry. (Since I put a picture of DOGS on here, I better acknowledge him!
-
Aww, so cute
-
Ruth-sorry about your kitty.
Brightness-glad you had a nice walk.
Mommy- how are you feeling?
Falconer- I agree with Ruth about the exhaustion and fatigue that sets in after "active" treatment settles down. I think there was even a thread on here about it. That being said, I did terrible on letrizole. I felt like I was 90 years old and I had no energy, tons of joint pain and emotionally, I felt like I was in a bubble. I actually did not realize how "numb" I felt until I was given a vacation from that drug and the side effects started to lift. When I started taking aromasin, I did not have those same side effects. If it continues, you may want to talk to the dr. There are still a couple other options for you to try.
-
Ruth - I'm sorry about your kitty - what a beautiful big boy Henry was. I'm glad you have those two canine rascals around to keep you busy. And checking "pee-mail" is a vital part of every doggy walk! Falconer - Ruth is absolutely right about the post-treatment crash. It's perfectly normal after being in "fight" mode for so long. Also, letrozole doesn't help. I've been back on it for a year after being off for 3 years, and I definitely notice a difference in energy levels. Hope you were able to get out for a bit of a run - exercise always helps me feel better. Brightness - good for you for heading out to enjoy the nearby college town - sounds like a great outing to get your mind off the waiting.
Did a nice 40 minute dreadmill run this morning. It's almost getting cool enough for me to run outside - can't wait. Off to the cabin this weekend!
-
I forgot to add that I got in 2 days of Zumba, 2 days of water fitness and a full day at the beach this week. Back to school on Monday.
-
Ran into a friend on my walk so ended up walking over an hour.
Good Grief, Brightness. When WILL they have the results????? Keeping busy is about the best you can do (although actually moving is a little on the extreme side of being busy ),
Ginger, school started here yesterday.
-
Doing good Ginger since i was tak n off the Taxol because of the problems I had with the side effect
-
KB870, thanks for letting me know what an erger is. I know rowing is very good exercise. Good for you, it sounds like a lot of fun.
-
Thanks for the encouragement, everyone. I did run 3 miles and I did feel better, thanks. Tomorrow we drive to Syracuse to take my DD back to college. Probably not much exercise in the cards though carrying boxes out of the car and into the elevator might count?
Ruth, your crabby cat was a beauty.
Brightness, so sorry to see that the path results aren't in, and you're still waiting. It is awful and unfair. -
Went to the gym today. First time since last Sunday when I pulled something in my back. Did about 20 minutes on the elliptical, first side to side then the straight one. Tried the bike that bothered me after 5 minutes. I did some strengthening equipment for the arms and shoulders. It felt good to work out. Tomorrow I am off to Ocean City, Maryland for a week of relaxation and lots of walking and swimming. I love water.
-
Brutersmom- the water is my happy place. Enjoy!
Mommy- glad to hear it!
Falconer- moving to college definitely counts as exercise. Hope the day goes smoothly.
Hoping everyone in the path of Harvey is staying safe. It sounds like a bad one.
-
Welcome to Trmtab and Brutersmom. Great place for inspiration here.
Ruth the key to walking with dogs and actually getting in a walk for yourself is the extension leash. As my dog stops at the tree to sniff and pee for the 19th time, I keep walking and he must follow when he runs out of leash. Then he runs ahead to the next stop and again, I keep walking at my pace and he has to follow. It gives him a few seconds to enjoy but I have a steady pace.
This morning the news says Harvey is supposed to drop 40 inches of rain - yikes that sounds like serious Katrina trouble.
We were able to see the eclipse some here despite clouds. Co-worker had the glasses so we all went outside and he shared. It was cool to see even if only 85%.
Brightness - OMG call them and ask where the hell is your pathology report.
On the topic of PTSD and continuing distress, I know this is common because my oncologist finished my words one day when I was explaining its not like I'm depressed all the time, but I just can't handle little troubles anymore.
I didn't get much exercise in this week but I did stick to my diet pretty well. Busy, busy at work and who mentioned everything happening at once - spent an hour and a half at the vet Monday evening for my dog's ear infection, son is very sick and in-between transitioning to new doctor so trying to contact new doctor and old doctor, mom needs prescriptions picked up and garbage put out, etc etc. I managed one lunch time walk and a couple of sessions of some light dumbbell exercises. Hopeful today will be an exercise day.
I was down 3.3 lbs as of Friday morning (total) but then I had a mini calzone last night and back up 1.3 this morning. Hope it was salty and that is the only problem.
