Susie & Janet, I just went to my 30 year high school reunion. I was so freakin anxious about it I had to take a Xanax just to get out the door to meet my friends to go. That ticked me off b/c I hadn't taken a Xanax since RADS ended - how could something completely non-invasive and non-life threatening make me so anxious?
I'm 20 pounds heavier than high school, currently unemployed, unmarried, no boyfriend, I have a child who is 17 months old- while they all have kids at least 10 years old, and that's the men who have younger wives- and breast cancer. Of the three girls who were somewhat notorious pals, myself and my best pal, the third of our trio was lost to breast cancer in 2007. Small prep school- and I had changed my name and lost touch with everyone. Party being held by one of the snotty bitches who had life handed to her on a platter and her little pals of perfect little preppie snobs.
What I am trying to say is that I understand the pressure is intense. And a mind-fu*k. Like, why would this be such a big deal, especially for the two of you who have and continue to face actually horrors daily with grace, a smile and a joke? I get it.
Here's my .02: For one thing, it's true, no one really changes since high school. But I forgot there were some people I was always glad to see, people who were relieved to see me there too. They remembered some good times and good things about me that I did not remember. I had also a chance to go to some people I felt I had slighted and tell them good things about themselves and my loss for not getting to know them better at that time. You know how good it feels to do something kind for someone else, right?
And as far as cancer, it's everywhere. Its our age gals, of our class of about 120 people, a bunch of people have died of various stuff including cancer and they were well remembered. The guy in my class who "made it" the biggest, the one who is practically a household name who we all think only shows up at reunions to lord it over us- his wife has breast cancer. She's having a rough time with all of it and I think probably not reaching out to others because she is soooooo important, right? Big man, he didn't even know some of the simple stuff we all consider commonplace. So I helped him help her.
One of the gals in that pack of snobs has a 16 year old son with bone cancer. Never connected before, of course we connected now. My best pal's high school boyfriend also made a big name for himself, he's a super guy, extraordinarily impressive lawyer now, was a big football player and my pal- but I stayed away from him because it would hurt my best pal's feelings for me to hang out with her ex... he's got Stage IVa tonsil cancer. I would not have seen him, not have known until after he was gone if I hadn't gone to the reunion. We're all having lunch in a couple weeks- just days after his next PET scan. Reminiscing I was able to tell him how I have always adored him and only avoided him before because of their old relationship- which of course seems such a puff of nonsense now.
And there were people there who had more embarrassing resume than mine. One of the wrestlers who was my football player boyfriend's best pal is short, bald, in a let's say less than glamorous job and has posted on FB that he is still a virgin. He was warm and friendly. One of the nerdy gals didn't make it to the reunion but she's a major cancer researcher who held my hand all through my DX because it happened during the organization of the reunion. I had never spent time with her but always wanted to- now she was helping me, kind of like Edison helping someone screw in a lightbulb. The guy whose locker was next to mine was also a total nerd who I never spoke to. Now he's a doctor in family practice and such a warm human being.
Yes, there were some moments, like when 4 of the snobby girls who have it all revealed they live within blocks of me now and I suggested we get together and they all looked at their nails and sniffed. There were some girls who looked so great and skinny and healthy and wore their husbands and their big diamond rings dripping off their hands- and I was still wearing bandages from radiation in a size 14 dress I was ecstatic abotu fitting into while they were wearing size 0- but I still felt like Cinderella at the ball. And I know that neither of you is going to have that extra ego boost because at this moment you are not as fab as you were before the DX and treatments and still have healing to do. I know Janet was one of the prettiest girls in school, I can only guess Susie you were too, being the dance teacher and all. And it's totally possible that your classmates (or the ones who happen to show up) are all shallow people who would condescend and judge you- but I think it's more likely at this age that your experience will be more like mine. Most people who have reached this age have had experiences that level the playing field and their priorities are more like your own. Most of them are just going to be genuinely happy to see you, and will look at you the same way they did in high school no matter what you look like now. They will share your sorrow for your losses and your joy in what makes you happy. It will be pretty easy to navigate between the people who you want to spend time with and those you want to avoid. And the gossip is heaven :::giggle:::
The real trick is making it to the 35th reunion, and the 40th reunion. That's what everyone realizes at the 30th reunion. This is just one moment in time, and as you have known these people over the years, you have seen them and they have seen you at all different points. We are grateful to see each other, mostly.
Hope this helps!
(and my current avatar is from that reunion, with my best pal from high school, still my best pal on my right and another best pal I should have been nicer too on my left. I am just happy I am here long enough to try and be a better friend to her.)

You never know who you are going to meet at a high school reunion and it can turn out to be something wonderful. I met my dh again (30 years later) at an overseas brats reunion - it was love at 2nd sight and we got married 18 months later. That was 10 years ago. I so urge you single ladies to go to the reunions!
Question - I don't know where everyone is with their treatment but I sure hope I am not the only bald one coming. Ok, so I have a little bit of hair - maybe 1/4" hopefully it will have grown to 1/2" by the end of September. I am still wearing caps and wigs but I know Las Vegas will be pretty hot for wigs during the day so I am bringing lots of caps/hats with me.
-
Robin - got your PM this morning and responded back. I just realized that we are going to meet each other in Vegas - I know I am slow but I still have dead brain cells from chemo. When are you getting into Vegas on Friday?
-
I bought my ticket! I bought one way last week and all the return flights were $$$. Everyday I searched, and the return fare finally popped up for $99 so I got it! I arrive around noon. Jancie-at the luggage carousel, you will see signs for the shuttle buses. ($6 last year) Buy a tix and they will drop you off at the hotel. You may have some other hotel stops for the other people, but it is a fast drive.
-
Hi everyone,
I got tickets to go see Zumanity on sunday night, late show 1030. Is anyone else going to see shows or anything else fun??
Teresa
-
Don't worry Jancie, I'm still waiting for my breasts to grow back, too!
-
Barbe - you are too funny!!!! I am going to assume you are coming to Vegas - I can't wait to meet you. I have been reading your posts for months and you do crack me up!
I have to start learning how to color my hair by then. I will bring a box of color and hopefully someone can help me out. I need to learn to do this at home instead of paying a salon $50 plus to color my hair. Any volunteers?
-
LOL> Janice.. you willhave two Hair Salon Owners there....hehehehe
Me and Linda....
... I will help you sweety..... You can buy me a glass of wine or Linda a glass Of Sweet Tea.......
I am home healing from my Exchange groggy..... so not much typing today ladies... hopefully tomorrow!
God Bless
-
Estepp - heal well from your exchange surgery! Can't believe you are even here typing and I couldn't even find a typo

You know you get all of the free drinks you want as long as you are gambling but I am more than happy to buy you a bottle of wine! The heck with one glass - a bottle is in order!
So Linda likes sweet tea - how about a Long Island Tea? That is my favorite drink!
It is hard to get sweet tea here in Utah - they don't know what it is and forget about trying to get an ice tea spoon with your tea, they expect you to dissolve a ton of sugar with a straw!
-
Janice - they don't know what sweet tea is in Missouri either. I'm from Alabama and we know how to make some good sweet tea!
-
Denise - I got to the point where I keep an ice tea spoon in my purse at all times - you just can't dissolve 8 packets of sugar with a straw! I know....sugar is bad for me but I have to drink my tea very sweet with added lemon it in.
-

You do not need to bring me a bottle.. I was teasing... but I will still put the color on your hair for oyu...
Again... off to La La land.. at least I can read the forums in and out of sleep. I stay awake for about 20 min.. then out for 20... sooooooo funny...
-
OK Laura, you talking about me behind my back!!!!
I do like tea but not very sweet, maybe a packet of sweetnlow....and I use to indulge in a drink or two but not in a very long time. I prefer something non-alcoholic....not that I am against alcohol (my DH drinks beer) I just don't like the way it makes me feel. Can't wait to see alllllllllll of you in Vegas.... Was that enough drawl for you Laura?
Janice, maybe you better let me do your haircolor since I will be the only one sober....lol
You better get some rest girlfriend.....I will let you know tomorrow if I get my nipps on the 29th....I will be gone most of the day, PS in the AM and hopefully pre-op, then a luncheon for a friend moving away, then in the PM my appt with my General Surgeon for a checkup....
take care and sweet dreams
Linda
-
Laura - Put a couple of glasses of wine in me and my southern drawl comes out like you would not believe. I lived in Dallas for 20 years and I mastered that southern drawl - LOL I have tried to get rid of it since I moved to Utah as it was a dead giveaway.
Linda - thanks for the offer of the sober coloring expert! Who knows, Laura may turn my hair an orange color - hey......just kidding.
-
ROFLOL... I did not think about that... GOOD ONE!
