mostly it's crows and robins, so I'll go with robins. And here is a robin story......after dinner two nights ago, I happened to look out the patio door and perched on the deck railing was a young robin all alone (with the speckled breast & still had fuzz on his wings). I kept checking back and he was still just sitting there. I figured that he had either fallen out of his nest or had flunked his maiden flight. I KNEW that I should not do anything, as anything I would do would make things worse, so I just went to bed, but it was storming out & all night long I kept peeking out and worrying about him, fully expecting to see a dead robin keeled over on the ground. Shocked Well, morning finally came and just when I was looking out again, an adult robin (let's say it was his mother) landed on the railing with a worm in her mouth. She started hopping toward him, he (who had been immobile all night) started hopping toward her flapping his little wings, and as she fed him the worm, I backed out of view, not wanting to startle them in any way . When I checked back again a few minutes later, they were both gone. Yea! Happy ending!

Another animal story with a happy ending is......

Kill another "sockmouse". Marcus is an indoor cat who we have had for 10 years. In February he started going on the prowl in the house and would make these strange howling noises, and we would see these socks all over the house.

Then when he brought a sock in his mouth and dropped one in front of me I realized this was his way of hunting!! Socks!! So we call them "sockmice". And I go "such a good kitty, such a warrior, thank you for protecting us!" And he even makes the big kills sometimes, as I will see my daughter's pajama pants in his mouth or underwear or shorts lying around!! 😀😀

The Black Hills of South Dakota. We are going with another couple who are good friends & staying in some interesting places (one hotel overlooks Mt. Rushmore, another has all themed rooms from the 1800s and they leave scones and coffee/tea outside your door in the morning). Should be very fun.

probably to Fort Worth TX where my stepdaughter and her husband are moving in a week!

Ruth, love that area you are describing. Went there several years ago. In Keystone we happened onto a local singer-Steve Thorpe- singing outside of a restaurant. Bought both his CDs and still enjoy them. Beautiful trip!

Oh my, I don't know if this is a tradition or not; but my parents would always invite people who didn't have family around over for the major holidays, and we have done that too. So that idea of inclusiveness is something I would like to see passed on.

My maiden name is Runyan (sometimes spelled Runyon) I'm not related to author Damon Runyon. But, I can trace my roots back to the historic Runyon house in New Jersey. The house was used to hide slaves on the underground railway. The house was rebuild off of it's original place to group of historic houses also in New Jersey. Hope to visit someday.

The name Runyan/Runyon is French and was spelled very differently. Started with an R, ended with a "n" with a "g" in the middle. I have it written down somewhere.

Good one Ruth...other interesting ancestor stories...
