Guess it's all taste:  I think Natalie Portman with long hair is about as boring as it gets.  But with that buzz cut, wowie.  She's got a great head.  It makes a very distinctive statement.

I have notice this:  after about age 25, short hair can really age an appearance.  Mine was growing out, about 3 inches all over.  I got more ma'ams than ever in a short time span!  Now I get why a lot of women I know over 50 all of a sudden grow their hair really long.

I got a really fun mohawk.  The minute I went back on the street, it was "miss" again.  So weird what two inches on the sides will do, but it's all about signification, eh?

And then there's some women who just look a whole lot more beautiful with short hair.  There are a lot here! I think I look a lot more distinctive with short hair.  So I guess my question should be, what's wrong with looking my age?? (40)

Well.. I am pushing 50 and think I look younger with long hair... in my opinion... hides my neck wrinkles...and I agree some young women look fab with short hair... Also, I think if you are thin you can pull off short better... In contrast, I think really long hair on older women looks to be a bit much.. I know two women with long long gray hair... does not do it for me.

Yes, I think that's true--once over a certain age, then long hair looks kinda weird.  I have a family member over 60 with long, dyed blonde hair--it's too much.

At 45, I feel like this short hair makes me look like my mom (she is 70).  I just feel older looking.  I have always had a shoulder-ish bob, and I think I will go back to that.  I don't like really long hair on older women, but I know lots of women in their 60's and beyond who look great with hair at chin to shoulder length.  I don't think I'll get there for a WHILE though.  It is growing sooooooo slow!!

I'm pushing 50, also, and am not ready to let go of the long, long stuff...  I *knock on wood* haven't had to start dying yet, but that may change, thanks to bc and chemo.  Maybe it has something to do with the era I grew up in, being a teenager in the early 70's, when everyone wanted Marsha Brady hair, but I think my insistence on keeping it long is an act of rebellion; my mom used to make us cut our hair short, even though we wanted long hair.  My DH also prefers it long, which is fine with me.

When my DD gave birth to my grandson 1 1/2 years ago, her doctor thought I was one of her sisters, rather than the mother...  I know I don't really look that young, and, granted, the room was a little dark, but evidently the long blonde hair fools some people.  Maybe that's because I can hide my face behind it!  Wink

Yamaha... I agree... I am 48 and love having long hair (normally).. I think the 75 year old needs to keep it under control, but at my age, I am all for it. I too have been told I look much younger, yet with short hair... not so much.

I turned 50 two weeks PFC. I don't feel 50. I actually look younger with the short hair.

Yamaha -  I'm 45, and loved my long, brown hair.  Some women can really rock short hair.  I think my face is way too oval.  Oh well.  Was thinking of extensions.....has anyone done this?  I don't want to damage the hair that I have.

well, you girls are confusing me now.  i'm almost 66 and i've always thought long hair on women my age made them look older, especially if they kept it gray.  I've had short hair since i turned 50, i think, and i will color it with base and highlights 'til the day i die.  i HATE the gray.

yaya ... I do think older women with long gray hair look older... not a good look IMO... Actually I think some women look younger with short hair and others look older... It depends on the woman... For me, I look better and younger with long hair. I think its cause I have a fat neck... I need to discuss this with my PS... maybe a little lipo?? Or don't they tighten that neck ligament?

bdavis, let me know what your PS says on that one!  Wink  I might be interested!

Yaya5, you absolutely DO NOT look 66 in that avatar!!!  Holy cow, girl, where in the hell is that fountain of youth????  Spill, spill, spill!

missy_111, I haven't given extensions any thought...I don't have enough hair yet to attach anything to, although, I do have enough to officially pinch now!

lago, do you think you'll keep yours short?  I had to laugh when you mentioned having the big hair back in the 80's.  I was visiting my sister in a hospital in Denver last week because she had brain surgery and they shaved a strip of hair in the back.  She wanted a "pick" to try to get some of the matts out, so I went to the gift shop searching.  The clerk in the gift shop told me he thought picks went out in the 80's, so then he and I had a little talk about the "big hair" of that era...

As for the long hair, I remember a boss years ago who told me women over 30 shouldn't have long hair...I never bought into that, but I think I would either cut mine short or dye it if I were gray.  I haven't had mine short since a "Dorothy Hammill" when I was about 12; this will be my opportunity to give short hair a try again.  I can't say that having long, straight hair is the most attractive look for me, but I was pretty stubborn about it.

YamahaMa Yes I'm going to keep it short for a while. Maybe when my real texture come back I might rethink but it's so easy and everyone seems to really like it. My hair was short in the 80s, longer/ just above shoulders from age 32-34 because I couldn't find a decent hair dresser (Western MA at the time). Moved back to Chicago and cut it short again. Then at age 40 I decided the short hair was to harsh so I grew it into a page boy that kept getting longer and longer till I could actually put in in a ponytail… then chemo made me go short.

long hair…I really think it depends on the face and not the age. I do agree though that long gray hair will make anyone look old.

Question for those of you further along. I'm PFC 5wks and now have the fried, light chemo peach fuzz all over my head with black stubble under that. Usually how long on average for you guys was it from this stage to actually getting some real hair growth rather than stray hairs here and there?

Thanks Robo. Are you sure it isn't my new boobie prizes that are fitting into 34D bras?  Tongue out

I think my mom scared me that I shouldn't be sleeping if I have a concussion. I made the mistake of telling mom I got a head ache and shoulder pain right after I got rear ended today. Aleve seems to be taking the edge of things just fine. I'm going to bed now. It's been 4.5+ hours since the accident. I think it's ok to sleep now.

Yes mom wanted me to get a cat scan. She just doesn't understand how us bc gals are scared of scans like that. If they find even a little cyst you ended up doing follow up scans. Just don't need the scaniety.

    --------------------------------

Back to hair and keeping it short. I'm getting my cut and colored again tomorrow.

YaYa5 - 66???  You look spectacular and confirm my opinion that most of the time, we "mature" chicks look better with shorter hair.  I am 61 and when we chopped off most of my hair pre my first chemo treatment, my daughters thought I looked terrific.  I'm not sure I was crazy about that salt and pepper color that I had never seen, but the short 'do was a hit.  I think it lets our facial features just shine!  I remember when I was in high school I got my hair cut short, and one of my friends told me I should never let my hair grow long.

I will be one day PFC on 9/29.  Can't wait!  May have to shave the chemo stubble that has hung in there throughout treatment.  Once the real color starts to come in, I don't want to lose one micrometer of it!

Yay a, I agree, you do NOT look any where near 66!! You look great, even with no hair.

Sorry to hear about the accident Lago. Hope everything is good now.

I can't wait to get hair. I am 7 weeks PFC today. Hair is between a quarter and a half inch and has some thick patches and some really thin areas, especially the top of my head. I am pondering shaving the whole head to see if it will speed growth up and get it to come in more evenly. It started coming back on taxotere, 16 weeks ago and this is all I have. I'm on herceptin which I am blaming the slow growth on.

Survivor11....I am almost 8 weeks pfc and my hair is filling in pretty quick, 3 weeks ago I had half of the coverage I have now. AND it is filling in in the more balder areas. I am taking biotin and prenatal vitamins to help it along. We can keep each other updated if you want. I am very anxious to be able to go w/o a scarf on my head.

Yes, lago looks fantastic, but she looks fantastic regardless.  Lucky Lago!

Oval faces often looked "dragged" by long hair.  I have a long face, and the long hair was really more about looking cute than looking good.  I guess I succombed to all the pressure of men loving long hair, and my mother made me wear a little buster brown style my whole childhood.

I dunno, maybe I'm better with short hair, but a certain style.  I am not up for the constant "ma'ams" yet.

Lago - hope you are not suffering any after-effects of the accident.  Sometimes, 24 hours later, all the aches and pains make their presence known.

Haven't been here for awhile.  I colored what's left of my hair the other day and the color didn't take!  Now it looks sorta pink!  My last CMF tx was 7/18 so it should be all right to color my hair.  Any suggestions?  I do need to wear a wig because my hair is so thin.  I wear it when I go out, but not at home.  However, I thought that I would color my hair to look more like myself.  Haven't colored it since February.

Lago car accident? ugh! I hope you are ok.

I def think I look older with short hair. I had shoulder length hair that i hilighted blnde for years and I miss it. I dyed my hair with a semi permanent color once then let it go. As it grew longer it did not look as grey. My husband says they grey looks like hilites. He does miss my long blonde hair though. He is happy now that I am past the friar tuck look though. I do intend to grow my hair long again and probably hilite it again, maybe not as blonde as it was. At 46 i def look younger with the long blonde hair. I do get compliments on the short hair though. It is really getting to an awkward stage in the growth now. I am going to have to go to a good salon for advise on how to style and cut this as it grows. I think in a month or so I will have a mullet so def don't want that, not a good look at any age,

Thanks everyone. I'm  just a little sore in the shoulder today but not bad enough to take drugs… but of course I never took and meds after the BMX so that may not mean much to you gals.Tongue out Seriously it's not too bad today. Tomorrow through Thursday it's going to rain so I'll know for sure if there's a problem.

Carrol you just want to look like a blond bombshell hot rod babe instead of a sophisticated short hair gal. Tongue outSeriously you don't look older with the short hair.

So sweet YaYa. Actually got hair cut and colored this morning, the had the car washed. I followed up with  just a few groceries (2 small bags) then came home for lunch around 1:30. Remember I worked out the day after chemo for the first 3 tx! Only shingles can stop me. Tongue out

Emmac.. shounds like a plan. Right now just have that silly near invisible, light colored, chemo fuzz with dark stubble underneath, Can feel it much more than I can see it, but I did have to shave my legs yesterday. To many of those stray long hairs popping up.

bdavid...thanks for the encourageent. I can't wait to go topless. I am so tired of wigs, hats, scarves. I just want enought hair for coverage, don't care how long it is, just coverage.

Hi girls. SOOOO nice to see the pictures and how you are all 'evolving'. Gives me hopes, which I really need now. Like Survivor11, I also still have the silly near invisible, light colored, chemo fuzz with dark stubble underneath. (copied and pasted the description from her, as it exactly describe my hair). I am only 4 weeks PFC, and I am affraid I will have to start shaving my legs before I have anything descent on my head. I do wear a wig when I go out, and yesterday, at a flea-market, a woman approached me and told me how she loved my hair color...I said thanks a lot, but I was laughing inside. :-)
