My DH scissor cut mine really short, then my friend (a hairdresser) buzzed it. Buzzing it was the best because whenit finished falling out it didn't make much of a mess. Mine fell out after the second FEC and again after the 3rd taxotere. Good luck!

I have really thick hair and when it started coming out I went and got it buzzed and started wearing my wig.  I am so glad I did bc it continued to come out and every morning in the shower I scrubbed my scalp and tried to get as much out as possible so I would not have little short hairs all over me.  I never lost it all, but my scalp was very visible and I can't imagine trying to style it.  When people say they never lost their hair, I wonder what percent they really held onto.

Betsy it has been great not having to worry about any hair during DIEP recovery.  Easy to wash and dry for sure:)

BDAVIS - Healing vibes to you...

Someone mentioned how they wonder how much hair people who never lost their hair retain - for me, I only hung on to about 25-30%.  Certainly not enough for a style or to be topless.  It's odd, I was glad to have that much.

My son (12) was gone for a week and when he got home he mentioned how much more hair I have now than when he left.  :)  Made me SO happy!  I'm 6 weeks PFC.

Cathy as you can see in my progress chart at 4 weeks PFC, I did not lose every bit of my hair but most of it. I had these long strands along my hairline that never came out. I struggled with the idea of buzzing it too. I decided not to because the little strands I had looked good on the sides when I wore a hat. Then again it was winter when I lost my hair. I never really wore my wigs just big knit hats. I never had any mess, the bulk of the loss was all in a day or two, mostly one day in the shower it all just kind of came out. I did always fine hair though too. Once my hair started to grow back the long strands broke off short and I had the whole thing evened out at the salon as soon as i had full coverage.

So I am 3 days post surgery and will be in the hospital til tomorrow... Then off to the Hope Lodge til Friday and then hotel in downtown New Orleans til aug 1... So far I have just gone topless at the hospital and telling the nurses how it is odd to me but I do not have the energy to wear a scarf... And no one here knows me or cares... They said they thought it looked good and didn't think I needed to wear anything... So I think that while I am recovering here in new Orleans I will just go topless , but when my husband and I go out into the French quarter, I will wear a scarf.

Has anyone heard about anesthesia and hair growth? I think I read somewhere that anesthesia can slow growth.

bdavis,  so glad to hear you are doing well following your surgery!!  I had my easy surgery, just port removal and permanent implants 10 days ago, 3 hours of anesthesia and my hair is still growing.  I wish when I had my bmx and TEs that I had been hairless as I could not raise my arms to dry/style hair, there is something to be said about no hair to worry about.  I was topless while in the hospital last week for overnight stay, no gave me a second look.  It is so hot everywhere that just a cap and minimal hair has been so nice this summer.  Hope you and your DH get to enjoy some of your NOLA stay.  How do the new girls look??

dbavis surgery can make your hair fall out (stress to the body) but I never heard about slowing growth. I hate general anesthesia and the SE from it but no slowing of hair growth for me.

Thank you for all the feedback on hair loss. Think I have decided to go with a 1" cut rather than the buzz as I will be wearing hats and scarves. Just will have to see what happens.

Carrol2 -- You look great! Your hair is very flattering and feminine looking. It gives me hope. Thank you!

Cathy_C -- I cut my normally shoulder length hair to a couple of inches prior to starting chemo. When it began falling out, I waited about 5 days to try to decide what to do. Well, my hair is very, very thick, and even after a daily shower and shedding handfuls of hair, I was still getting covered with hair on a daily basis. So, I buzzed it right after my second TC.

bdavis -- Sending healing thoughts your way!

Just got back from vacation at the shore!

Great hear Carrol2!  Thanks for posting.  I like it dark.  Was it that dark before chemo?  Mine seems to be coming back very dark, but it was a light brown/auburn before.  I think the dark hair is ging to be too dark for my pale skin.  My last taxotere is tomorrow and my hair has been growing back for about a month.  (I did lose every last strand every where on my whole body.  Lucky me!)  It's about an eighth of an inch long.  I can't wait until I can go topless.  It  won't take much for me, especially if we get any more of this hundred degree weather.  I sure hope not.

    Have a great evening everyone!

I have one more DD Taxol to go and this week have white fuzz sprouting all over my head.  I wonder does anyone know - will I just lose that after the last Taxol or does it turn into hair?  I don't want to jump the gun being hopeful that my hair is returning ahead of when I figure it would!

DeeBee, I have the same worries on taxotere.  My eyelashes and eyebrows are even coming back the last couple of days!  So happy about that!  My onc let me take a few extra days between treatments since we had a vacation planned from a while ago, and I am afraid it's just because of that that they are coming back.  I am going to be so sad if I lose them after this last treatment tomorrow.  But the onc did tell me that some people do get their hair back on taxotere, so I am hopefull.  And I believe Taxol is the same.

Kay I found that my eyebrows did thin 5 weeks after chemo but came back pretty quickly. It was like the new hair was pushing the old hairs out. Eyelashes were much slower.

But they both thinned out again. Eyebrows are coming back. Not sure what the eyelashes are doing but I have enough that know one would really notice. I'm 6 months PFC.

kay yes my hair was this dark before chemo. You can't tell in the pics so much but there is a bit of grey in there too. I got a semi permant color about 3 months ago but that is all washed out now. My hair was really dry and damaged before because I hilighted it so much it was basically all blonde. So I am sticking with the dark hair, i think, at least for a while. If my hair needs more body when it gets long i may add the hi lites again but so far it feels a bit fuller, not so much thicker, but more of it than i had before. I can't tell if it's chemo curl, my hair was pretty much like this when I was younger and got straighter when I got older. Could just be because of the length making it curl up.

Carrol I feel our hair goes back to what we were like when we were kids then "grows up" after 19n months PFC. My mom said my hair was so straight as a kid it would stick out straight… and that's what its doing if I don't keep it short and use product.

ok, I have NEVER colored my own hair before, alway done in salon.  I only have maybe 1/4- 1/2 inch all over, but because of the grey mixed with very dark I want to color.  Anyone have any suggestions on one of the 30 day/temporary do it yourself colors?

I've colored my own hair for over 30 years.  It's simple!  And much cheaper than a salon!

I, too, have about 1/4 to 1/2 inch hair on my head (7 1/2 weeks PFC).  No surprise to me that it came in a dark color sprinkled with some grey (I'm 53 yrs old).  But I've colored my hair blonde and/or with highlights most of my adult life.

Last week I stopped at Rite Aid and purchased "L'Oreal Healthy Look Creme Gloss Color" in a medium blonde. It cost $7.99 on sale. It has no ammonia.  Says it lasts for 28 shampoos.  You mix the colorant with the developing creme (simple directions) and only have to leave it on your hair for 10 minutes (many haircolors make you leave it on 25 minutes) .  Then rinse.  It was very very simple and I'm happy with the results.

You can probably find "L'Oreal Healthy Look Creme Gloss Color" at Walgreens or CVS also; I haven't really checked out Walmart's line of hair colors in awhile.  I just happened to be in a Rite Aid and had the time to look at hair coloring.  Since I've always colored my own hair, it was kind of fun to browse thru all the different products available as I haven't shopped that aisle in months.

DrivineMrsM,  I will be going out at lunch today and hitting the drug store.  By tonight I will be a medium bunette again!  I am 12 weeks out and my hair is slow.  Hoping the color will improve the look as far as thin texture too. Thanks!

Question about hair coloring: if I color it my normal darkish brown, will it also stain/color my scalp?  All the years dyeing it and I never noticed what my scalp looked like after. Just that if I got any on my face it was a bitch to get off.

Here's picts of me at about 5 weeks PFC.  As you can see, the front is almost all completely white (think it was like that before) but the back is fairly dark.  It's hard to see what hair I have where it's so white, so I'd love to put a rinse on it so I look a little less "cancer" and just more like a crazy New Yorker.

    party in the back
