Noelle, I think on the measure of "superhuman levels of caring for other people" not to mention "work exertion", your heart function is JUST FINE.

I sometimes find it very unhelpful (and kind of patronizing) when people suggest I slow down but . . . . boy, you have been going hard.  MY heart starts to ache just thinking about what you've got on your plate. Is there any relief on the horizon? (Can I put a few tabs of Ambien in the mail?)

Food aversions: No interest in pad thai ever since I had it the evening of my first chemo.  (*gag*)

I'm kind of afraid of foods with more than 3 ingredients. I now really like watermelon. I used to really hate watermelon.

*****KARIN!!!  I'm tickled to hear from you.*****

Hey - I'm here, reading and catching up.  Needed a "cancer break" for a few days...dealing with the pain/burning/itching from radiation.  I agree with Adrienne - it's all crappola!

Otter - Glad to hear dad is okay.  Are you warmer yet?

Noelle - Glad you finally got some info that was useful; the rest of it sucks!

Linda - No food aversions here, but I also shudder at the thought of plum juice.

Gracie, two things. Firstly, I am SO impressed that you have AQUARIUMS!! I love fish..well..I love all that walk, crawl, fly and swim but I do love a fish. Secondly, tonight when I was walking Feeble I was stepping briskly through the thigh-high spring grass and doing this bizarre visualisation thing where a Pac-Man was traveling through my veins chomping any cancer cells that were left there SmileI really wish I'd bought (or more likely scavenged) one of those beer-sticky, butt-ugly machines 25 years ago..I could probably pay for all my p-surgery from the sale of one today...   I echo Rock re you, Ellenoire. WTF!! El, you could not have been THAT naughty in your previous life! There is weird science going on here in Tasmania tonight..I KNOW you are going to get yourself a lucky break, and soon.  I had mine today(..just on 12 months since my gritty but fantastic life fell over). I sold my house. It settled today. I am so relieved. I am sitting here in a delicious state of suspended animation (which is NOT the same as the treading water thang that I have been doing for 10 months..) I celebrated by getting a pair of prescription sunglasses which I desperately need for driving and WOW! How blind was I before I put them on!! A bit scary, really. Like..how many accidents did I cause, in a Mr Magoo kind of way??  I'm having a glass of cheap sauv blanc now..fat tortoiseshell cat to my left..thin brown whippet-you-have-when-you're-not-having-a-whippet dog to my right. Pain in my wrists and feet.  Love in my heart. XX, Girls.

Noelle - I'm really glad the stupid doc FINALLY called and I'm even happier that your numbers are still in the normal range.  YAY to 3 weeks of no dang hospital visits!

Kerry - Congrats on the closing of the house!

RADS ARE DONE!!  Today I received treatment #33, my last and final radiation treatment.  Woohoo!  Yipee!!  My skin is red and peeling . . . but I have reached another milestone and I am skiing down that mountain of ours!  BTW, received a certificate of completion and a goodie bag from the radiation staff - awesome group!

Noelle - Glad to hear that you finally received your call . . . my heart also dropped from a 55 to a 50 from the chemo.  They continue to test as well & reminded me that it is in the normal range.

Kerry - They still sell the pac man machines.  I nearly bought one last year that had 4 of the "classics" on it . . . until I saw the price was $4000!  Crazy!  I went out and bought PS2 (for $129) and a pac man game for it that has ~ 12 classics on it for $20.00.  Yes, I still play it!

Hope everyone has a fantastic Friday!

Jean-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o!! Yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I reiterate: I am in absolute awe of all you gals who had to do the rads biz. The thought of having to do ANYTHING 33 times in a row does my head in..let alone getting zapped by Deadly Rays Man. My hub is celebrating the sale of my house by going out this morning to look at (aka purchase) a 2nd kayak he saw in the paper. That man loves spending as much as a girl shopaholic does! But the boys in my family are all fish, so I know there will be much paddling done this summer. Have a great weekend!

    Jean: Radiation finishing!!  YAHOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

Noelle: I have a love-fear relationship with Skype. But maybe if I down a glass of wine or three I could give it a whirl -- esp for the holidays!

(My chest has been tight the last couple days. I'm blaming Monday's flu shot. It's only 9 pm but I'm going to bed.  I'm wiped OUT.)

Rock~ hope you feel better in the morning daulink!

Noelle ~ don't work too hard! (yay right we know better lol)

Picked up one of those necklace fans the other nite.... best $1.50 I think I have spent in a long time! Found it in the summer clearance isle at walmart. I highly recommend it to those of you with the flaming flashes going on, like me.

Working again on saturday trying to get a job done by next friday. Boss decided to treat me and is getting me a 27 inch flat screen monitor for work! I'm going to have to sit on the other side of the room to work with it lol. I tried to con him into letting me have 2 smaller ones on each side of the big one so when I work it would be like an imax theater.... my desk isn't big enough dang it lol.

My thoughts are with each of you ladies. Warm squishie hugs and lots of love! Jen

Skype?  I can't even get my new webcam to work beyond one attempt at a connection.  Pissed me off so much I realized I had to put it aside and address it again tomorrow.  Is it a good thing that the "little" things are getting to me?

Adrienne, SISTER!!! Yesterday I accidentally "lost"/deleted an email I'd been working on for an hour (da*n mac, mutter mutter) and I got all bent out of shape -- just like my old self!!

Skype can be supremely frustrating at first (unless, i've heard, you have a mac).

I have had more trying to Skype by opening Skype and using the webcam, than opening the webcam software and then telling it to Skype.  Also, sometimes there is a lag  of 15 seconds or so before the image comes up...and sometimes it comes up behind another window so you think you're not getting an image, but you really are.

I have got to go back to sleep. Two hours is not going to cut it.

    Morning everyone!

Skype - never used it, but I am using the webcam, so I am willing to give it a try or two.

Kerri - congrats on selling the house!!!!

Roxi - yeah on the new bra!  I am in week 1 of no bra (ouch, ouch, ouch).  I tried to run on my treadmill in a jog bra yesterday and could not do it.  Whipped it off and ran topless for 30 minutes.  Thankfully I am small on top!

Rock - cute story of a gal that I met in rads and have been having 5 minute conversations with over the past few weeks.  She did not know of this site, but now loves it!  We have talked a bunch about hair - new growth is so exciting!!  She showed up to rads yesterday for the first time in 3 weeks with no scarf or cap - and looked fantastic!  She said, "Jean doesn't wear a anything, why should I?"  I gave you all the credit for starting the "bald is beautiful club" on this site.  You gave me the courage to go out bald, feel confident and still feel beautiful - so thank you!  Apparently through my actions - I passed that confidence on to another.

Headed to the treadmill for another 30 minutes, then to broomball, then dinner with friends to celebrate (again).  Is there such a thing as too much celebrating - not!

    Happy Saturday!

    Jean

I just caught up with weeks of good posting. First off, congrats to those who are finishing radiation, chemo (Gracie, you are almost there) and dealing with MUGA stuff. I have been spending more time on Facebook than here, but I miss seeing those of you who are NOT on Facebook. Jen, thanks for doing the holiday card list. Hanukka falls the same time as Christmas this year which is good and bad -- good because it gives me more time to prepare and bad because I like to have them separate so we invite friends to our house then we go to them at Christmas.

Peach fuzz. Yes. Heart palpatations. Never had them. Have them now. I did an echocardiogram instead of a MUGA. I also did an EKG to check out tha palpatations. All seems normal.

Shingles? Maybe coming back but I am PRAYING they don't.

Work? Working too much; too hard; too long and missing connecting with you more often. I have been the interim director of the WEA -- the Washington Education Association -- more than 80,000 members and a wild election season where we worked very hard to get our current governor r-elected. Needless to say . . . I am very ready to be done with this interim period which has lasted for nine months now.

Ovary surgery? December 17th. I am popping them out and serving them up to the cancer gods as a delicacy. Hope they like them. This buys me half the time on tamoxafin -- two and a half years instead of five then I'll be able to switch to femara (probably spelling that wrong). Chemotherapy pushed me into menopause but borderline. My theory is pop OUT the ovaries to avoid ovarian cancer as breast cancer is related. Bad news? I have to get my first colonoscopy (most people don't have to do that until 50) since a first cousin died of colon cancer at 54. Blech. Anyone done that? My husband did recently and as I told someone who asked, "The actual procedure was no big deal -- it was all the crap he had to go through to get there." Then I realized what I said. I love unintentional puns. BTW, hubby and I are doing much better. He was diagnosed with ADD and that explains a lot. We are dealing with coping strategies.

I also seem to be having a wandering thyroid. More on that when I get more details. I don't really know what that means.

Las Vegas in the spring? Yes. Farmhouse with bringing own chair? Yes. Denver for a conference? Yes. Skype? I am a technodweeb but I supposed I could try.

Noelle, please, once more -- so sorry, send me your shop's website. I will be curious to hear what's up with your heart at the next test. I hope the first one was a fluke.

Otter, you are an amazing source of information and a calming voice. I am hoping your father is better.

    Jean, congrats on finishing radiation.

Jen, I have to get a hair photo out so we can compare and contrast, my dear hercepto-twin. Thanks again for organizing the card deal.

Mary, I love seeing your stuff on Facebook. Love the photos.

Kerry, I will swap our winter for your summer anytime. When winter sets in, come to Seattle and we'll tour you around.

Kristy, I am so sorry you had to endure the fecking pokes! Ridiculous

Rock, your book signing looked really fun. Is your book available on amazon?

Gracie, hope your bones feel better. You're almost there.

Karin, I like hearing your voice too...hope your school year is going well and that your students are keeping you going.

Cristine, I also just read and try to catch up. It's hard to keep up with these fabulous women.

Anyone here from Angelsabove us lately?

Oh, eddie, me too!  You said this:  "Bad news? I have to get my first colonoscopy (most people don't have to do that until 50) since a first cousin died of colon cancer at 54. Blech. Anyone done that?"

My very first one is scheduled for next Thursday (Nov. 20).  My PCP was pushing me to have one last year, but I decided to get my breast lump investigated first...and look where that took me.  So, after putting it off until well after I was done with chemo, I finally had no more reasons (except the sheer disgust of it all).  I told him I was ready, and now I'm on the list for Thursday morning with a local GI doc.

I am so not looking forward to this.  I even resurrected Patrice's thread on the Moving Beyond Cancer forum where she said her onco saved her life by insisting she have a colonoscopy.  They found a thumb-sized (?) "pre-cancerous" lesion and took it out.

You'd think that, after a core biopsy and mastectomy/SNB and 4 rounds of chemo, a colonoscopy would be no big deal.  It is, though.  I hate the idea of 36 hours of nothing but clear liquids, with the last 18 hours spent on the commode with explosive diarrhea.  Are we having fun, yet?

I read (too much reading, I know) that the prep I've been given (Fleet Phospho Soda) can cause permanent kidney damage in some people; it causes temporary damage in everyone who uses it.  But the GI doc's office insists that this is what I have to use.  A Fleet representative said to be sure to drink plenty of water (I sent them an email about it).

Anyway, I need some support and reassurance, and some advice from anybody that has already had a colonoscopy.

Eddie, a wandering thyroid?  (I'm coming up with some strange images of that, and thinking of leashes or GPS locating devices, or something...)

We are still visiting my family, but we're heading for home tomorrow.  My sis decided we should celebrate Thanksgiving today, with turkey and all the rest.  I was assigned to make sweet potato casserole (more like a dessert), which is pretty easy.

Everything is almost ready, so I'd better go.

    Hugs to everybody!

    Otter,

Happy Thanksgiving. We are thankful for you. We are thankful for your amazing acumen for research and your brilliant mind.

On th colonoscopy, I think we have to go into macabre mode to get us through. Heck...who needs all this sheeyit anyway? My dh said the procedure was a non-event after all that pre-procedure stuff. ANy silver lining? We'll lose weight ? (okay, just for two days). We'll come out with clean colons? Hey, if they remove a part of a colon, is it a semi-colon? I am sure I am the first person who has ever made that joke. All kidding aside, Otter, my cousin died at 54 of colon cancer. Early detection....  ! Yeah.

I think wandering thyroid means it's not where it is supposed to be in terms of numbers. It is slightly swollen AND it may be adding to the heart palpatations. I never knew what a palpatation was until now. Blah, blah, blah. Hope you enjoyed your meal. Could you send me some sweet potato casserole? It's my favorite.

Hugs to you and everyone else as well.

I had my first colonoscopy in Dec 1999.  The colonoscopy itself isn't bad-they used twilight sedation and I slept through the entire procedure.  The prep it wasn't a bit fun, but necessary.  Different doctors use different preps.  The first one I had, I drank a gallon of "Go-Lytley"  there was nothing "Light" about it. Followed by 2 Fleets enemas  (Of course, I had also had diarrhea for 56 days, so it kinda added insult to injury--but that's another story)  I also took phenergan to control any nausea.  The other colonoscopies that I have had (get one every 3 years, thanks to the 2 precancerous polyps that were found with the first), I mixed a bottle of Miralax in a liter of 7-Up (much easier to get down), and took Zelnorm in the morning and evening the day before the test.  Both ways did the trick.  Know that when you wake up, you will be full of gas since they inflate the colon.  Looking back, after what all we have been through this year, it's not THAT bad.

Eddie--I like the semi-colon joke!  Sweet potato casserole sounds good too!  (Right now I am craving chicken & dumplings).

Cold and rainy here in KY--possible snow flurries tonight.  Put the electric blanket on the bed today.

Hope that everyone is having a great weekend!

Hey girls! Thanks for all the colonoscopy-talk. I have been laughing out loud (I'm home alone) remembering family experiences. My family of origin has a relationship with bowel cancer so we are well informed re all things proctological. My brothers (both truck drivers) refer to a colonoscopy as an 'Up Periscope!'. They have their tests together and particularly enjoy the walk down the corridor in the paper undies. Youngest bro (43) has suffered for years from colitis, which he refers to as his 'arse problems'. I cannot believe the syncronicitnessness (yes, we make up words as well) of this but on Friday I received my first free bowel cancer screening test in the mail! Oh the perks of being 50!! (The instructions were a riot..gosh cancer can be funny) Anyway, a colonoscopy is nothing. I actually woke up from the best sleep of my life (and I include 6 days in an induced coma in this) after my Up Periscope. It must have been the totally empty digestive system, but I felt fit to tie afterwards. I don't know why you girls have to have such complex prep over there..We just buy a packet of stuff (our family likes picelax..pickle-axe), mix it up, drink it according to the instructions (in the 12 hrs before the test) and then sit against the toilet for about 10 hrs. You think I'm kidding about the toilet, don't you? Two bits of advice: do NOT sit or sleep more than 8 paces from a loo, and do NOT have anything to eat or drink too soon afterwards (and make sure you are back near that loo of choice when you do!)EmbarassedAn advantage of bc and all the associated hospital visits, needle sticks, public humiliation, pain and being reduced to nothing is that tests like the Up Periscope are just a puff of smoke. Twelve months ago I didn't know my arse from my elbow..now I'm a fecking heath-encylopaedia. Thanks, bc (you fecker).

    hi ladies,

I'm still around, ....just kind of in the... have cancer....did all i could...time to get on with life limbo !! Not sure which direction to go, have made the mistake of letting my mind wonder to places  with too much information in my need to find out more about the triple neg situation and what about recurrance and stuff.  So am starting to snap out of that nether world... have put a ban on any info seeking regarding the big C.  Now have to focus on Christmas ...it gets harder every year as the kids get older , our daughter is easy it's the boys 19 & 21 what do ;you get them?

Had my 6 month surgery follow-up and everything went fine and have my follow up with my onc on monday. So will find out about future scans and stuff. Will be doing the gene testing more for my daughter and if it is positive will probably go for the ooph and consider taking the other boob. The only problem is here it takes so long to get results 9 months to a year which is kinda a drag!

Had no problem with the healing from the rads, just still fatigued at times...i'm not sure how long i can use this as an excuse!  Congrats to all who have finished rads and chemo...we've come along way in a short time haven't we girls ?! It does just seem like a blur at times.

I've been touching my head alot lately as i have this nice soft dark covering now  , funny thing is the grey ones that are coming in with it are longer... go figure.

Enjoy the weekend and everyone stays well!  I'm turning 45 tomorrow so will lift my glass of wine in honour of all you wonderful ladies, thanks for being a part of my life !Innocent

My mom's cancer was likely colon but presented as "primary unknown" with 6 mini tumours... I think I am familiar with every one of each of the bowel emptying meds. She had them allllll! Was just flipping channels and came across a cartoon called "Toot and Puddle" and almost laughed outloud given this pages topic... LOL!

Angels, Happy Birthday to you!!!!  I feel the same way though. Time to move on but I can't stand the thought of not keeping up with all my friends here. I'm thankful for facebook. It's the first step to moving on for me.

I have a question for everyone. When are you doing your follow-up mammo? My onc last week said its usually 6 months after surgery, which would be now, but my primary said its a year after rads are done. That seems like a long time to go without a screening. Thoughts?

All this colonoscopy talk cracks (LOL) me up! Semicolon, now there's a pic. I guess I have a couple of years before I'll end up with one. Bottoms up!

Saw the best movie last night, Role models. I needed a good comedy. Alot of F bombs but overall, I enjoyed it.

I love seeing everyone's pictures on facebook! Rock, your book signing looked like so much fun. And Noelle, your friends surround you with love. Good thoughts coming your way...

Hi, everybody - just got back into town from a long NYC weekend.  Many highlights, but none higher or lighter than coffee with Rock on the Upper West Side on an unexpectedly warm and sunny afternoon.  (Rock, you are looking smashing.)

No colonoscopy stories to share, and hoping to keep it that way for another few years.

A belated answer to the running shoe question, but that's OK, because all I'm going to do is echo Noelle.  It really pays to go to a specialty running store and talk with the people there.  If she (can't remember if it was your sister or your friend) has already been doing some running, have her bring in her old shoes for the staff to look at.  They can tell a lot about your feet and your gait from the wear patterns.  Don't just try the shoes on - run a half a block or so in them to see how they really feel.

    And happy birthday, Angels!!

oh Rock and Linda I am sooooo jealous!

Linda, will you be in Detroit for Thanksgiving? There is a teeny tiny slim chance I may be nuts enough to drive to Detroit to spend the Holiday with one of my fave "other families"

Happy Birthday Angels! Do we have everyone back now? RanD? Are you reading and not posting! ??

Is everyone on Jenn's Holiday Card list? I don't want to miss anyone!

I am finished my perfume blend, so only a 3 hour work day. Going to see my son in a play tonight. He has been in rehearsal for months.

I will post pics on facebook.

I think I will get a day off on the 24th, after only 29 days straight.

I have a cold now too. Yippee!

     Love to all.

Linda/rock~ wow you guys got to meet??? Did you get any pics together? How fabulous is that!

Noelle~ I think the only one I am missing was RanD.

Hey girls and HiHappyBirthdayForTheOtherDay Angels! I'm spending the day in bed today..talk about Mondayitis CryThe cancer carousel has me on a downer after such a nice weekend..well.., woke up a tad sensitive yesterday so took Fibber for a fantastic 2.5 hr hard walk in the bush. So beautiful and such clean air. I thought the endorphins would do the trick..Last night hub and I dined out in a nice restaurant WITH AN AQUARIUM right behind us (and not a tacky one!) but I still could not shake this sad thang. Maybe a good lie down will do the trick. And a new pair of running shoes..my feet are really suffering from my walk as well.  Linda/Rock: way to go!LaughingI love the idea of catching up..how bizarre! Was is bizarre?? In a kind of I-met-my-internet-boyfriend kind of way? (Which I actually did, by the way lol) (he wasn't my boyfriend, but we did end up married!) I've decided to start saving (bottle tops???) for a trip to the US in 2010. There. I've made a commitment. And WATCH OUT for my hot flashes and my two new boobs when I get there!  N, tell us about your perfume. And I'm glad you are looking forward to a day off..you've been working too hard for a chemo-queen. Hope you are planning a perfectly self-indulgent day!

I am home, thanks for the birthday wishes....happy birthday to whosever it was just a couple of days ago.  (Mine was the 11th, and I turned 50, and that made me eligible to retire)..I just read four pages and chemobrain got the details...Noelle, take a day off.  Hope your beautiful heart is fine. Rock and Linda, I am so jealous too.  Rock, I may be in nyc in February, will you already be in SA then? Vegas in the springtime sounds good too.  Jen, thanks for doing the card list.  Otter, glad your Dad is okay, and sorry your sibs aren't so good at facing reality.

We went to Tennessee/Georgia and saw relatives last week, Saturday through Wednesday, then Wednesday morning got up and drove up into the Great Smoky Mountains (the fall colors were STUNNING) to a honeymoon cabin with a fireplace and a hot tub and we, well, honeymooned.  BIG SMILE.  I am really glad to be home, and to sleep in my own bed tonight, and I have to go back to work tomorrow, but what a great week!

Off to get ready for bed and be back later in the week,

    Karin, glad youre back!!!

Angels - Happy birthday to you!!

Rock and Linda - That is so awesome that you were able to meet up for coffee.

Roxi - I already had my 6 month mammo in October.  Ironically, they did not make me wait 2 days for the results.  They had the "grams" read immediately and pulled me into a room within 10 minutes and told everything looked good, no changes at all.  I was very happy to get the results immediately.

Noelle - glad that you will finally get a break, even if it is only a day.  Hope your feeling better!

Running / workout shoes - sorry forgot to comment, but to piggyback on Nicole and Linda it is best to buy from a running speciality store for all the reasons mentioned.  It is the only place that I will buy running shoes.

Going to bed early - tired and red.

    Jean
