Powers will be the real Power (no pun intended)

    an exerpt from American Thinker

    http://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2009/02/obama_administration_may_parti.html

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------

"Paul Mirengoff of Powerline predicted that Powers’ influence on the National Security would grow. Not only was she the closest foreign policy adviser to Barack Obama and has a close relationship with him that extends back years (they are Basketball and Blackberry pals) but she has apparently benefited from portfolio creep - the tendency for the responsibilities of officials to grow over time - so that she can now move into areas that were not formally in their job description or indicated by their title. Some people were reassured that Power had no formal role in dealing with Israel. That assurance can no longer be taken for granted."

The power grab by the National Security Council that I wrote about in  the Bureaucratic Coup Targeting Hillary and Israel may have already borne bitter fruit.

Barack Obama sends bust of Winston Churchill on its way back to Britain

Barack Obama has sent Sir Winston Churchill packing and pulse rates soaring among anxious British diplomats.

    By Tim Shipman in Washington
    Last Updated: 5:41PM GMT 14 Feb 2009

A bust of the former prime minister once voted the greatest Briton in history, which was loaned to George W Bush from the Government's art collection after the September 11 attacks, has now been formally handed back.

The bronze by Sir Jacob Epstein, worth hundreds of thousands of pounds if it were ever sold on the open market, enjoyed pride of place in the Oval Office during President Bush's tenure.

But when British officials offered to let Mr Obama to hang onto the bust for a further four years, the White House said: "Thanks, but no thanks."

Diplomats were at first reluctant to discuss the whereabouts of the Churchill bronze, after its ejection from the seat of American power. But the British Embassy in Washington has now confirmed that it sits in the palatial residence of ambassador Sir Nigel Sheinwald, just down the road from Vice President Joe Biden's official residence. It is not clear whether the ambassador plans to keep it in Washington or send it back to London.

American politicians have made quoting Churchill, whose mother was American, something of an art form, but not Mr Obama, who prefers to cite the words and works of his hero Abraham Lincoln. Indeed a bust of Mr Lincoln now sits in the Oval Office where Epstein's Churchill once ruled the roost.

Churchill has less happy connotations for Mr Obama than those American politicians who celebrate his wartime leadership. It was during Churchill's second premiership that Britain suppressed Kenya's Mau Mau rebellion. Among Kenyans allegedly tortured by the colonial regime included one Hussein Onyango Obama, the President's grandfather.

The rejection of the bust has left some British officials nervously reading the runes to see how much influence the UK can wield with the new regime in Washington.

Now it is likely that Gordon Brown will offer a alternative symbol of Anglo-American fealty when he visits Washington to meet Mr Obama for the first time since he became President. Diplomats are still working to finalise a date for the visit which is expected in the final week of this month or early in March.

One suggestion, given Mr Obama's interest in the Lincoln era, is that Mr Brown should offer an artefact relating to the career of John Bright, the 19th Century MP and political reformer who became the most prominent British supporter of Lincoln's Union forces during the American Civil War.

A British Embassy spokesman said: "The bust of Sir Winston Churchill by Sir Jacob Epstein was uniquely lent to a foreign head of state, President George W Bush, from the Government Art Collection in the wake of 9/11 as a signal of the strong transatlantic relationship.

"It was lent for the first term of office of President Bush. When the President was elected for his second and final term, the loan was extended until January 2009.

"The new President has decided not to continue this loan and the bust has now been returned. It is on display at the Ambassador's Residence."

    President Reagan, please come back:

    What is twitter?

Plan by Newt Gingrich (more by this author) Posted 02/17/2009 ET
    Updated 02/17/2009 ET
Democrats in Congress have made a $1.14 trillion bet on big government.

With less than 48 hours notice, they passed a 1,073 - page collection of special interest spending and dared to call it a "plan."

With interest, the $787 billion bill will cost us, our children and their children about $1.14 trillion.  That works out to about $30,000 in new debt for each American household. Worse, Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) asked the Congressional Budget Office to estimate the cost of permanently extending the twenty most popular provisions in the bill.  The cost?  $3.27 trillion.

But we've seen Washington bet on big government and big bureaucracy over the American people before.  In each case these bets have failed.  And when this latest wager fails, America will need a plan.

I'm writing today to tell you about such a plan.

The Bush-Obama Spending Frenzy, Part IV

Like I said, we've seen this kind of high stakes, big spending, big government and big bureaucracy gambling before.  This isn't the Obama-Pelosi-Reid Spending Frenzy , this is the Bush-Obama Spending Frenzy, Part IV.

The first three parts of the Bush-Obama Spending Frenzy were on President Bush's watch.

The $180 billion stimulus program in the spring of 2008 failed.

The $345 billion housing bailout from the summer of 2008 failed.

And the $700 billion Wall Street bailout from the fall of 2008 failed.

All told, just last year, Washington wagered $1.2 trillion in spending and lost.  And like a problem gambler, Washington isn't walking away from the casino, it's doubling down.

What Would Reagan Have Done?  Bet on the American People

My nonpartisan, citizen-based organization, American Solutions, has developed an alternative plan, called "12 American Solutions for Jobs and Prosperity."

It takes its inspiration from Ronald Reagan.  Our plan doesn't bet on government.  It bets on the American people.

Callista and I recently completed a movie about the life and vision of Ronald Reagan.  And what we found was that Reagan's approach to the economy was more thoughtful than most of his critics -- and even some of his admirers -- give him credit for.

President Reagan had great compassion for the victims of economic crisis.  He spoke often of the Christmas Eve in the midst of the Great Depression when his father learned that he had lost his job.  "To be young in my generation was to feel that your future had been mortgaged out from under you, and that's a tragic mistake we must never allow our leaders to make again," he said.

But even as he understood the need for leadership to help Americans suffering from economic hard times, Reagan also understood that government's role wasn't to create economic prosperity -- it couldn't then and it can't now.

"Government Can and Must Provide Opportunity, Not Smother It"

Government's role, as Reagan understood it, was to give Americans real incentives to work hard, invest and create jobs -- incentives like keeping more of what we earn and the power to create and own our own businesses.

This is how Reagan put it in his first inaugural address:

"Government can and must provide opportunity, not smother it; foster productivity, not stifle it."

In the spirit of Ronald Reagan, 12 American Solutions for Jobs and Prosperity puts its faith in the people, not the government.

Our plan isn't more money for more government, more power for politicians and more make-work for bureaucrats.

It's a clear and decisive alternative that creates jobs, rewards work and encourages savings and investment.

12 American Solutions for Jobs and Prosperity

    1.    Payroll Tax Stimulus. With a temporary new tax credit to offset 50% of the payroll tax, every small business would have more money, and all Americans would take home more of what they earn.
    2.    Real Middle-Income Tax Relief. Reduce the marginal tax rate of 25% down to 15%, in effect establishing a flat-rate tax of 15% for close to 9 out of 10 American workers.
    3.    Reduce the Business Tax Rate. Match Ireland's rate of 12.5% to keep more jobs in America.
    4.    Homeowner's Assistance. Provide tax credit incentives to responsible home buyers so they can keep their homes.
    5.    Control Spending So We Can Move to a Balanced Budget. This begins with eliminating congressional earmarks and wasteful pork-barrel spending.
    6.    No State Aid Without Protection From Fraud. Require state governments to adopt anti-fraud and anti-theft policies before giving them more money.
    7.    More American Energy Now. Explore for more American oil and gas and invest in affordable energy for the future, including clean coal, ethanol, nuclear power and renewable fuels.
    8.    Abolish Taxes on Capital Gains. Match China, Singapore and many other competitors. More investment in America means more jobs in America.
    9.     Protect the Rights of American Workers. We must protect a worker's right to decide by secret ballot whether to join a union, and the worker's right to freely negotiate. Forced unionism will kill jobs in America at a time when we can't afford to lose them.
    10.    Replace Sarbanes-Oxley. This failed law is crippling entrepreneurial startups. Replace it with affordable rules that help create jobs, not destroy them.
    11.    Abolish the Death Tax. Americans should work for their families, not for Washington.
    12.    Invest in Energy and Transportation Infrastructure. This includes a new, expanded electric power grid and a 21st Century air traffic control system that will reduce delays in air travel and save passengers, employees and airlines billions of dollars per year.

I've already heard from thousands of Americans who believe that this is the kind of change our economy needs right now.

I'd love to hear from you.  Please send me your thoughts about 12 Americans Solutions for Jobs and Prosperity using the suggestion box at http://www.americansolutions.com/General/?Page=01607eab-e608-4f34-8ca7-367da48a1430.

It's not too late to be a part of real change for America.  When Washington's latest big government gamble fails, we'll be ready to put our money on a sure thing:  Real solutions for the American people.

" INCLUDES House language that funds a back-door effort to socialize medicine and set up UK-style health care rationing in the United States. The $1.1 billion in the bill for "comparative effectiveness research" will help establish a government board that will make life and death medical decisions about health care cost and treatments. (Page 52 of House Conference Report)"

And there it is again.  Yet AARP says it's not there.

Thought this was a very good viewpoint

    ----------------------------------------------------------

Bundling Becomes Official by Michael Gorback MD

From the New York Times, January 30, 2008:

"Two main causes of the system's ills are century-old business models, for the general hospital and the physician's practice, both of which are based on treating illness, not promoting wellness. Hospitals and doctors are paid by insurers and the government for the health care equivalent of piecework: hospitals profit from full beds and doctors profit from repeat visits. There is no financial incentive to keep patients healthy."

Reading this article you would think we are sitting in our offices with 2-3 week wait times for appointments trying to dream up ways to make patients come back for unnecessary visits. You would think we don't care if our patients are healthy. Yes, hospitals profit from full beds, but hospitals do not fill their own beds any more than airlines or hotels, which also profit from full occupancy, do. Doctors admit patients and hospitals are not allowed to pay them for referrals.

We don't need a financial incentive to keep people healthy. Although as a specialist in a very narrow field that doesn't fall into my particular type of practice, I still counsel patients about weight loss, managing diabetes, smoking cessation, etc, and the family docs in the area do a superb job on health maintenance.

No matter how hard we try, people are people and they don't always take care of themselves. Many engage in risky behavior, whether it's smoking, drinking to excess, eating Big Macs, or sexual promiscuity. We can only do so much. The uneasy feeling I get from this new theory of what's wrong with health care is that it looks like doctors are going to be held responsible for keeping patients healthy, which is a Sisyphean task. If your patient continues to smoke and has a BMI of 40, will your reimbursement drop? What do you think?

How do we keep health care costs down while we try to keep people healthy? That costs money too. If diet and exercise doesn't control hyperlipidemia then aren't we supposed to prescribe a statin? Are those pills free? Are recommended preventative health care measures like vaccinations, pap smears, colonoscopies and mammograms free?

If you read between the lines this is Destruction of Medicine Part II. The first wave was the transfer of income from physicians and hospitals to insurance companies. The coup de grace will come from the government with this new theory of health care, which is nothing less than yet another strategy to cut physician reimbursement.

MEANWHILE, Humana, the nation's second-largest health insurer, reported 18% revenue growth last year, but due to higher administrative costs and investment losses they had worse earnings. But Wall Street should not despair that Humana might have lower earnings going forward. We have this reassuring news:

"Last March, Humana warned that its 2008 results would suffer severely because the design of one of its Medicare drug plans led to steep costs. But it said the problems were correctable and that growth would bounce back this year. Humana was expected to shed such unprofitable members this year, and indeed projected a sharp decline this year of as much as 1.2 million enrollees in its Medicare plans that provide only prescription drug coverage." [emphasis added]

Don't you wish you could "shed" unprofitable patients? Just jack up the charges until they go away? Just kick them to the curb if they are a drag on you.

And for those pesky sick people who just won't go away, according to Bloomberg News Humana has a fix for that too:

"Humana said it expects to earn $5.90 to $6.10 a share this year, helped by a 64 percent increase in average premiums for its biggest U.S. Medicare-backed drug plans for the elderly." [emphasis added]

So while Congress tries to figure out how to screw us, the insurance companies are jacking up health care costs 64% for the elderly. This is a national disgrace. The bookies make all the money in health care, just like they do on Wall Street. There is more money to be made pushing paper from one side of the desk to the other than treating sick people - or keeping them well.

    LMAO, Moody!

Not that it matters, but I just got caught up.  I get on the puter and the darned phone rings.  I went to my favorite place today...the DENTIST!  I ain't even getting gonna talk about it.

IBC, I so agree with you about people are think they're so darned smart, but are so darned DUMB!  I'm dumb, but smart.  Undecided  I need some hot chocolate, Moody.

The best thing about sitting in the dentist chair WAS I wasn't tempted to watch the Obama Show today.  I could not stomach it.  Why in the heck did he have to fly to Denver to sign the Stimulus Bull?  And, if I'm not wrong he's going to continue to "campaign."  He needs to feed his ego from his adoring fans.  I've never seen anything like it.  I was too young when Hitler fooled everybody.  But I understand that Chavez is very good with crowds and see what's happening over there?

And who keeps sending hate mail because they disagree with a person's view.  Is that the Fairness Doctrine Act?  If you want to learn the truth about what's going on in this country tune in to Fox News Channel.

I'm so darned angry about this mess!  But I promise I won't be sending any hate PMs.  Those should be given to the mods.  Too bad you can't post it on the board.  Yell

I'm tired.  I'm putting my jammies on.
