Daisy, Although I do find fault with Oprah opening a girls school in SA ... it's her money. She can do what she wants, but then I think she should SHUT UP about politics.  She's an entertainer.  She should not point fingers at what Americans don't do for other Americans.

I went to girl's school and the boys all went to boy's schools .. much better attendance, better grades and less worry about appearance each day. We probably had less than 600 in our whole school (4 year high school).  The women in SA do need help .. to get an education and get jobs.  There is not a religious stigma or religious laws that prevent them from becoming doctors, lawyers, teachers or politicians.  I think the girls who stick with the program will succeed.  It's just such a shame she didn't do it in Watt's, South Central or somewhere in the South ... I am sure she could have found LOTS of young, smart girls who want the education and support to get out.  Many moms would have sent their girls to a boarding school ....  normally boarding schools are for the rich ..

Of course, each of us is entitled to our own opinion, and as such, Oprah is also entitled to her opinion about what Americans don't do for other Americans and her opinions about politics. It's freedom of speech. It's why we have the political thread with a variety of topics on this board.

    Have a marvelous day!!

We keep our heat at 61 degrees during the day, and 58 degrees at night. We do all our errands on one day and map out our route so we use less gas. We cook meals with leftovers used for lunches the rest of the week. We stopped cell phone contracts and use "to-go" type phones. We cancelled our long distance and use our cells for long distance calls. We don't eat out at all. I do not buy any processed foods, and I buy local produce which costs less than produce shipped from other countries. I buy everything clothing wise second hand (except for undies) and we buy mostly second hand from my granddaughter (22 months old).

I think many of us, whether we are Republicans or Democrats are doing everything we can to try to survive this terrible economy. I'm glad to see so many of us--across all party lines--are doing what we can to take care of our families. It's certainly not easy--although hitting the Cancer Society Discovery Shops and other second hand stores can be fun--especially if you find just what you need and only have to spend a few dollars! It's amazing how little we can get by with if we just try.

Here's to all the thrifty ones out there!

The one's who are out of touch are the one's who fell for the Stimulus Bull.  Who's going to pay for this?  Taxpayers.  Of course there are a few who don't pay taxes...people who are on disability, minimum wage earners, those who are living off the government.  To be fair there are some who do not pay taxes that are afraid for their future and their children's future.  Those who have been sucked into this Stimulus Bull aren't smart enough to look into the future.  Can we say...INFLATION!!??  For those who do not pay taxes inflation is going to hurt them too.  IMO, all this money going after "going green" should be put on hold.  It's expensive and no one will be able to afford it.  Even Obama says it's going to get worse before it gets better.  DUH!  So, why all the foolish money being spent on pet projects.  Talk about out of touch!  He's so out of touch that he's being flown around in AF1 because he thinks he should keep in touch with the people.  BS!  He doesn't know how to guide this country......the best thing he does is SELL HIMSELF!  Words from the Empty Suit.

I really fear for our country.  The majority, I believe, do not know what's going on.  They don't kow what's in the Stimulus Bull (who does?).  It scares the hell out of me.  And now Lindsey Graham who I respect is now saying that Nationalizing the banks could be in the future.  Scary!

What do you think of the NOT-SO-FAIR(NESS) DOCTRINE ACT?  I think it stinks.  We got rid of that in the '40s.  Why are we going backwards?  Oh, I know.  Because no one listens Lib talk shows unless it's in Oregon, Washingon State, other liberal states.  I hope the dems don't cram this down our throats!

blah, many of us are asking the same question..what's the rush?  Because the longer the Stimulus Bull sat around the stinkier it got.  Kinda like meat rotting and maggots gnawing.  Here's one kind.

Lifecycle: Adult blow flies lay eggs on or near rotting vegetation, manure or animals. Eggs hatch very quickly, and maggots begin to consume the decaying food. Maggots pupate and emerge as adults within a few days, depending on the temperature. Total developmental time from egg to adult can happen as quickly as a week, given good conditions, and depending on the species. They develop and consume food quickly, so much so that when a maggot has matured, it moves away from the food source to digest and prepare for pupation. During this movement away from the food, a maggot can travel quite far, up to 100 yards. This is when people most often discover the maggots as they disperse through a wall and across the living room floor.

Can we say EEEEEWWWWWWWWWWWW!  That's what this Stimulus Bull is going to do.

Heck, after reading Susie's report on Moving Beyond you would really think about what you are eating.  Rodent hairs, droppings, flies, amongst other nasties in our foods.  Even in our spices!

That's why I don't eat Kentucky Fried Chicken ... the RUMOR of the fried mouse.  Is it true? I don't know.  But what I do know is everytime I would even think about a bucket of chicken, I would think mouse and gag .... it's been years since I had a piece and just make my own.

And I didn't say it should be illegal for Oprah to speak her mind .. I said my part of free speech, I THINK she should SHUT UP -- it's so easy to be Oprah and Gayle ... they believe rich should pay more taxes -- I disagree with raising the percentage they pay, I think they should disallow a lot of their write-offs ...  houses counting as offices, houses purchases in business name. Transportation in limos and not counting that as income.  Sending kids to summer camp and writing it off as child care.

We do not live near a place where we can buy fresh produce.  How I wish.  We do not live near a grocery store.  We don't have a bus route..I live in the county.  There's nothing in walking distance.  However, my dh and I do not drive often.  We also run errands when we're out.

Now, when we had children living in the home that was a different story. We had to take them to school and pick them up (no school bus).  We took them to softball practice and went to their games when they played for the Optimist Club.  We went to school functions..games, cheerleading, etc.  The point is that we did a lot more driving when we had children.  I would hate to think we'd have to give up things my children loved because we couldn't afford gas.  There are many moms out there who can't fit their children in one of those itzy bitzy cars and certainly couldn't car pool.  We had a station wagon for many years.  And, I wonder how safe those itzy bitzy cars are?

Shirley, it doesn't matter if there isn't room in those toy cars to car pool.  Parents of young children can't carpool anymore because it is illegal in many states for kids who are under 9 to be in a car without a carseat or booster seat.  People don't have several extra lying around, and having one family drop off and another pick up at activities doesn't work if you have to leave the car seats with the kids so that there are enough car seats to get everyone home.

I live in California .....  she had to be 6 and 60 pounds.  She is 8 now and it's legal to drive without a booster now.  After age 4, I think???, it was legal for her to be in a booster seat.  Last  year was off and on for her regular car seat even though she was of age .. her car-seat/booster seat had cup holders, arm-rests and was made for up to 80lbs .. so it was quite comfy, plus she could see out that way!!  They had considered the law to be 8 and 80lbs so when she was out of her 20lb car seat, I bought the one that could take her all the way up.  The booster only seats are pretty cheap ... like $15 at Target.

But I always had 2 boosters in the car in case one of her friends went anywhere with us. Before that, if I dropped her off anywhere, it was her change of clothes bag and booster chair that went with her. At the daycares, there are booster seats and car-seats all lined up.

An ACORN rep was on the radio, Michael Berry show.  They're helping people stay in their soon to be foreclosed homes here in Texas.  Working with the banks to see if they can get the loan payments down now to an affordable range and back end it.  Make the loan longer to make up the difference.  So I guess we shouldn't judge them too harshly without knowing the full range of their services.  I guess they aren't just a fraudulent voter registrant.

Here are the idiots.  How can ANYONE listen to this station?  I hope the Fairness Doctrine Act doesn't come back.  If MSNBC doesn't change their ways they'll be booted cuz no one will want to listen to them except the loons.

    The Hate-Bush Network, Minus Bush
By Floyd and Mary Beth Brown
    FrontPageMagazine.com | Monday, February 16, 2009

You won't hear executives at MSNBC chanting "yes we can." The network that they cobbled together as a TV version of the left-wing screed Air America is in the ratings dumper. Advertising dollars that have never been easy are getting thinner.

Since the inauguration of Barack Obama, Bill O'Reilly and the Fox News Channel have owned prime time -- although O'Reilly has owned prime time for years. One night last week, for example, O'Reilly scored 3.5 million views compared to Olbermann's 1.4 million. Keith Olbermann may need to go back to sports. MSNBC is in big trouble without Bush to bash. Olbermann, Rachel Maddow, and Chris Matthews have filled their shows with nothing but anti-Bush hysteria for the last year. Now that their punching bag-in-chief has left Washington, they are lost.

Bush hating came naturally for MSNBC; their commentators lampooned "Dubya" at every opportunity. In addition to attacking Bush, they enjoyed trumpeting bad news with the hopes that it would make President Bush look bad.

After Bush's farewell address, Matthews came on the air and bashed Bush as a stupid buffoon who hung out with jocks, and proceeded to laugh at the notion that he reads books. This from the same Chris Matthews who said he "got a feeling running up his leg while listening to Barack" and also said it was "his job to make sure this presidency (the Obama presidency) works." More people tuned into his diatribes that mocked the Bush presidency than the few who tune into his rants supporting Barack Obama.

Another commentator who loves to hate Bush, liberal activist Rachel Maddow, said on her show following the farewell address, "this is the start of the part where we don't have President Bush to kick around anymore... there can be no promise that we won't be compelled to try to keep on with the kicking around." She spoke with the caption, "goodbye and good riddance," situated behind her. She then proceeded to kick Bush around for ten minutes straight, blaming him for everything from Katrina, 9/11, the existence of Hamas, the recession, and "two worthless wars". She had practically filled her show with anti-Bush rants and guests. After January 20, she has struggled to find new material.

But we give her credit for attacking Obama, albeit from the left. She is a critic of the reluctance of the Obama administration to prosecute President Bush and Vice President Cheney and other officials for so-called "war crimes" related to interrogation tactics used on terrorists. She is giving relentless coverage to left-wingers' calls for a Soviet-style inquisition.

Media bias is not something unique to MSNBC, they just take it to a whole new level. As the balance of the left-stream media gushes over how much Obama works out, the same media complained about Bush's "weird obsession" with exercise. While they went gaga for Obama's inauguration, the same correspondents complained about how much Bush spent on his more modest 2004 event. While the media were slamming Sarah Palin, they ignored Barack's propensity for gaffes including "57 states" and Afghani-Iraqi translators. While the media drilled Republicans for a "culture of corruption," they give Eric Holder, Tim Geithner, Bill Richardson, and Hilda Solis a free pass, saying they made honest mistakes.

MSNBC could look on the Obama administration with an eye of skepticism and provide needed details about his Cabinet picks and their corrupt and shady dealings. They could help Obama succeed by acting as a watchdog to keep him from going astray; instead they seemed poised to help him "succeed" by acting as his lapdog and propaganda office.

If MSNBC and the rest of the left-stream media continue to attack George Bush and the Republicans, even though neither are in control of anything, their attacks will sound even more insipid. Partisan propaganda is putting the media on the path to irrelevance. They could start a renaissance by serving as a less biased source that reports what is actually occurring. Just check out how many times ABC's Jake Tapper was viewed on Youtube for challenging Robert Gibbs on administration ethics.

Americans are not stupid; they know FOXNEWS is more balanced. O'Reilly talks to Susan Estrich, Al Sharpton and other leftists brave enough to face him. We searched for similar balance on MSNBC and find none.

MSNBC could drastically improve their ratings performance by exposing all of the pork in the stimulus bill, the negative side-effects of increasing healthcare, environmental regulation and big-city political machine corruption. MSNBC could continue rebuilding legitimacy by exposing the corruption of labor unions. MSNBC hosts love to bash big business, fine, but why not hold big labor accountable and shine some light in their direction. Just a clear and simple examination of how Obama's stimulus-policy money will be spent would increase their credibility.

Being students of the media, we won't hold our breath. We suppose they will continue attacking Bush and praising Obama, until their viewers are all gone. NBC executives are doing the shareholders of General Electric a disservice if they don't start changing this programming to secure a larger audience.

Pelosi said long ago when she first started working on this stimulus plan that her new bright idea was to give the rebate in weekly payroll deductions so we can feel the difference right away.  Uh-huh.  $400 someone might have bought something.  $13 and we're talking lunch a couple of times a week.

Did you know what our National debt is $78.8 Trillion dollars.  That's with our committed long term payouts and S.S., medicare and medicaid.  Beck had this number on his show today.  And they keep on spending.
