Nicki what is Dove shorts? I remember disco and yes I liked
Dove shorts or maybe they were Dolphin shorts. They were those silky shorts loose fitting, some were 1/2 white,1/2 blue. I think I remember Jack Tripper wearing some in Three's Company. -
Sierra - Kraft Macaroni & Cheese was my life saver in college! My friend and I convinced our parents to let us move off campus and into an apartment. We told them the rent was cheaper than it was (afraid they wouldn't let us have the apartment we wanted)....So, we went without a lot of things - like good food - just so we could afford our "luxurious" apartment with a pool where all the good looking guys hung out!
And, at that time, Kraft Mac & Cheese and Hamburger Helper meals were the only things I knew how to cook! I still love Kraft Mac & Cheese!
Someone mentioned "Disco Duck'....the guy who wrote/sang that song started out as a DJ here in Memphis. I remember listening to him on FM 100 radio station before he got "famous" and moved off to Hollywood! Rick Dees was his name....and he came to my high school once and played a charity basketball game.....there's a picture of him in my high school yearbook!
I hated Dodge ball! Actually, I wasn't very good at many sports....but, that was a mean one, wasn't it? But, I did like playing "Crack the Whip" - for some reason I loved being on the end and being slung around!
What about those hand clap/slap games? You know where you clap and slap each other's hands to the rhythm of a song? I can't remember the songs, though. Was it something to do with a sailor? Hmmm....Loved to do those!
Hope everyone's having a great weekend! Weather is GOREGOUS here in Memphis - and so warm I had to turn on the air conditioner!
hugs,
vicki -

How about...
Red Rover Red Rover send _____ right over!
The game where two lines of kids held hands and yelled over for someone from the other side to join them, if they broke thru the hand chain, they got to pick someone from that to team to go back and join the other side. It was sad for the last kid standing But really fun to break the chain and steal one of their players. -
I can't watch that scene in the movie!
Dodge ball oh yes I was the target everyone seemed to hit! Another lovely memory!
Red Rover, a new way for people to attempt to break my arm!
I need to focus back on happy memories!
Okay tell me what other idiot did this? Day like today sun shining you go out in your bathing suit on hot concrete and lather with Baby oil, then when you are my age you aren't surprised you have basal cell carsinoma!
But I can remember me and my girl friend laying out there knowing we could solve our whole lives if we had a boyfriend!
That and listening to The Carpenters and John Denver! -

Patti - YES!!! The Miss Suzie song, I remember!! I can't believe you knew all the words!!! But, one song I'm thinking about has a line in it about being in the deep, deep sea. Oh, well...maybe I'm confused about that one. But, I definitely remember now the song you mentioned!
Sierra - yes, onesies, twosies - that was jacks wasn't it? I loved to play jacks! And, the thing with string, yes, I do remember! Cat's Cradle was one of the things I'd create with the string. And, Jacob's Ladder. Of course, I don't remember HOW to do any of those now, though!
Cowgirl - yep, I was one of those idiots who used to lay out on the hot concrete and grease up in baby oil (once, when I was out of baby oil, I rubbed a stick of butter on -it smelled awful!) I was definitely a sun worshiper back in the day....
Did anyone else have paper dolls? Do they even have those any more? I used to love to cut out all the paper clothes.
vicki -
I had paper dolls
and just loved them
dollhouses too and the furniture
I guess it was jacks..
member bolo bats

Patti: I dont remember all those songs

under the chin ..
LOL
Hugs -

We had Patti duke, Betty and Veronica from the Archies
and the girls from petticoat juntion.
Cowgirl- get this we layed out with baby oil and iodine

Sierra-
the only dessert I can remember my mother making alot was she had those tupperwear (she was a tupperwear Lady)
parfait cups and she would layer different flavor puddings or jello topped with whip cream yum!

Did you sing this one
John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt,
His name is my name too.
Whenever we go out
We hear the people shout,
"Singing John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt."
Dah dah dah, dah dah, dah dah,
John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt-----I think I have the words right?
and
ninety nine bottle of beer on
the wall ninety nine bottles of bear---the nuns just loved that one LOL
************************
I remember being
in a dance recital--
my whole family was there
sitting in the front row
I got a hold
of some bubble gum
and was popping gum
and chewing away
like a cow
to this song
I want to go back
to the little grass shack
in Kealakekua Hawaii ...
MY mom was so
furious and so was
the dance instructor...LOL!
xoxo
Patti -
Sometimes we would put iodine in it! I have no idea why!
We also sung a silly song
He's a Long Tall Texan, He wears a ten gallon hat.
I am a long tall Texan, I wear a ten gallon hat.
That and 99 bottles were staples on every bus trip I road! -
Morning:
Jello was big, that's right
I also used iodine..
and... hmm... yikes a blanket
i only had one for the head area.. )
anyone recall this little trick
with paper..
Somehow you would fold it all
and the ends rather triangular
and write something on each little piece
then you would move this with your fingers
ask your friend a question .. and choose
seems to me, some of the pieces had Numbers on them
with a statement on the underside
sorry, can not explain it better than this
I recall living in Connecticut
our neighbours were Italian
and we'd go over for pasta
oh, what friendship... not the same
now with people Tony and Gilda
houses would be left open, side doors
sometimes the front one
you'd just bang on the door and say Hi, It's me..
Hugs -
Yes Sierra
we folded
the paper like
triangles and
asked questions too--we called our
paper thingy a fortune teller LOL
we would dress
up in crazy
clothes
and parade around
the block
with pots and wooden
spoons--our marching band!
we had a grandma Rose
and Uncle Tony..next door neighbors
always cooking up a storm
and having us for dinner
put on plays
in the garage
the garage door was our curtain LOL!
tv commercials
It 10:00 do you know where
your children are?
doctors made house calls
on weekends and when ever
you needed them at night
the movie-the prime of miss jean brodie
and the theme song
jean jean roses are red
jean jean your young and alive
who sang that?
xoxo
Patti -
My teen aged daughters were just reminiscing from way back when..... they were children (all those years ago) and did those clapping games.
Miss Lucy had a baby
She named him Tiny Tim
She put him in the bathtub
to see if he could swim
He drank up all the water
He ate up all the soap
He tried to eat the bathtub
but it would'nt fit down his throat
Miss Lucy called the doctor
Miss Lucy called the nurse
Miss Lucy called the lady
with the alligator purse.
I remember that one from my childhood, too. It's amazing how they get passed on through generations. They also folded the fortune teller.
Paper dolls: Anyone remember Betsy McCall paper dolls that you could cut out of the magazine every month? I remember my mother gluing the doll to card board and helping me cut out the clothes. I had a whole collection. I even traced the doll to design and color different outfits.
There was a lot we could do to pass the time that didn't cost as much as Playstation.
The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie was a great movie. I met Jane Carr who played Mary McGregor about 20 years ago.
Singing the song, thanks to you, Patti, I looked it up and it seems it was written and sung by Rod McKuen (I wouldn't have remebered that)
Peggy -
Hi there.. Gals..
Patti:
so that is what it
was called
it was great fun
also, I recall that song
Jean..
lovely ...
Hugs -
Patti,
OMG, I swear you were reading into my life. When I saw the Miss Mary Mack, I was so happy. I taught my two girls that (they are 16 and 18 now) and the buttercuo song? Are you talking about Build me up buttercup???? If so, my favorite song.
Sierra, those trangle things have made a come back. A few years ago my daughters were making them.
I remember the song Jean. Was that sung by OLIVER? How in the world did I remeber that????
Hugs
Debra -
Now don't get me started on Girl Scouts! I loved Girl Scouts! Okay, now I've started! Making sit-upons, dip bags, God's Eyes. Singing around the campfire, roasting hot dogs and s'mores, earning badges. Good times!
Hey, Catholic school and Girl Scouts...momma did try to raise me better!
Denise -
Oh, yes, I remember the Betsy McCall paper dolls! I used to cut them out, too!
And, the paper fortune teller thingys - did those, too!
Anybody else here read the Trixie Belden series books? I loved those!
I wasn't a Girl Scout, but, I was a Brownie!

vicki -
Hi Vicki:
Right, majorettes..

I had a pal who was a
cheerleader for the 49ers
oh boy, ... she had quite a bit of fun
lots of work
Hugs -
Sierra I wish I could remember how to make
those fortune tellers...I would love to make one
for my niece...

Slinky
who remembers the slinky jingle?
slinky slinky every knows it slinky...that is all I can remember
Ok who played with silly putty?
I have this vague
memory of taking silly
putty...rolling it out
and rubbing it
against the sunday comics---
anyone else remember doing this?
xoxo
Patti
who was good at hula hoop?
I never mastered that one.. -
Patti - here's a link I found that tells how to make those fortune teller things:
http://www.enchantedlearning.com/crafts/origami/fortuneteller/
And, yes, I did the same thing with silly putty - stretching it across the sunday comics and rubbing the pictures on to the putty...
And, I LOVED the hula hoop...and don't laugh, but a few years ago I told my hubby I wanted a hula hoop for mother's day (even though I'm not a mother except to our dogs)....he bought me one and we took it to a family gathering - we had a hula hoop contest and I won!
Sierra - I bet your friend did have a fun time as a cheerleader for the 49ers....
Yes, I had majorette boots - I used to wrap my feet in saran wrap and stuff newspaper down into the boots to keep my feet warm during Christmas parades.
hugs,
vicki -
Vicki....thanks for those instructions...I'm going to show my 6yr old granddaughter!! and the hoola hoop...loved it & was pretty good , too, but don't think good enough to win a contest!
Silly putty and comics...Yep...
loved paper dolls esp Betsy Mc Call...
had a baton ...pink metallic color ...but never was in any organized thing...just loved pretending
Iwas was a Brownie and a Girl Scout,too....can't beat those s'mores....remember gathering cat tails around the Holidays and spray painting them gold for decorations or something...just a good time...loved my scout leader....and getting all the round sew on badges...esp the ice skater & the painter ( the cute ones)
did the plastic bag over our feet before putting on our regular winter boots ( red with the gray fake fur)
...and rubber bands on our knee socks to try and keep them up....what a no no for circulation...oh well
Blessings to all of you ....Goodnight! Sharon F -
I LOVE this thread.
I remember thinking The Prime of Miss Jean Brody was a "nasty movie" and would stay up late to watch it.
I'm gonna check out the site to make those paper fortune tellers to teach my niece and nephew.
Speaking of Girl Scouts... It's Girl Scout Cookie time, remember when those peanut butter cookies used to be called Savannahs now they call them DiSiDos, still my favorite over the Thin Mints (also I remember those having a shortbread yellowish cookie inside the chocolate instead of inside chocolate cookie, am I crazy?) -
Vicki thank you for the forune teller link..It all came back to me once I saw the instructions
As for the hula hoop..I always loved it..But I stunk at it...Maybe I will buy one now and give it a go...Great way to get in shape...Thanks for the idea...
OK shimmy shimmy coco pop
shimmy shimmy pop.
My friend used to sing that as she was swivling her hips away and keeping that hoop going over and over...
Sharon my friend had a pink baton with platic fringe on the ends...I am roaring here thinking about the the platic bag
ritual....I would fight with my mom about that and wearing a hat...I was afraid it would flatten my hair and cause static electricity and firzz....LOL!!!
Christine you are not crazy...I knew there was something different about the girl scout cookies...yes the Disidos.......that and our little cardboard boxes of milk
YUM!....
the di si dos remind me
of a dance we
had in for the the 6-8th graders
OMG it was awful!! All the boys were one corner and the girls were all in the opposite corner---
WE had to do the do si do...swing your partner do si do
after that they played some rock and some slow music...
the chaperones kept an eagle eye on all...all night long your would hear not to close...not to close...] LOL!!
Ok now how many times
did you or a friend play this little
jingle on the piano
over and over
http://www.divtune.com/s/heartan_.mid
This song inspired me
to sign up for
piano classes LOL
I guess we had
some money
in the school budget
one year
because out of no-where
this music teacher shows up
at school--she was a witch(nun)
we did not own a piano
and I decided I was going
to sign up because I wanted
to learn how to play
heart and soul
when I showed up
for class the second
week and the teacher(nun)
discovered I had not
practiced she swiftly
showed me the door LOL!
xoxo
Patti -
Patti,
I can play Heart and Soul in harmony. -
Wow! Nothing wrong with you guy's long term memory! Remember that thing that you slipped on one ankle and twirled it and jumped over the other end (did that make sense?) It had a ball on the other end with a bell in it (I think)???
Patti, I know it is hard to believe but...Carrie was a Girl Scout drop-out! (hee hee) Had something to do with not liking snakes and spiders I think.
Denise -
yum...Girlscout cookies! They don't do that here in Israel! I used to be a GirlScout and thin mints were MY favorite. Such nice memories. Thanks for the nostalgia for me.
