I was in the 6th grade when Kennedy was shot.
That morning I was sent home from school with a horrible head ache. My mother put me to bed in her room and I slept all afternoon except when I got up to throw up.
I can remember hearing the television in the other room, hearing something about asassination and thinking-they must be watching a show about Lincoln.
Later on, my little sister came into the room and told me President Kennedy had died. I thought she must have meant his father. I'm not sure when the terrible truth finally sunk in.
I never again had a head ache that bad until more than 20 years later, when I was pregnant with my first daughter. The doctor said it was probably a migraine and one usually has the first one as a child. He was surprised that I could tell him the exact date of the first one. -
Sierra - Isaac Hayes lives here in Memphis. He did open a bar here on Beale Street - not sure if it's still open.
Cowgirl - I had purple, crushed velvet hot pants! And, yes, Deese - I wore a white crocheted vest with them!
Sharon F. - my first alcoholic drink was a Singapore Sling - at a Friday's. That was when the minimum drinking age was 18 in Memphis - now it's 21....
Another fav song - by Tommy Roe - "Dizzy" - I'm so dizzy, my head is spinning - like a whirlpool it never ends. And it's you girl making it spin....I'm so dizzy.....
Anyone else have "poison rings"? The top of the ring would lift up? Mine came with a perfumed salve inside.
What about "silly straws"?
Sharon68, I have one tall tupperware tumbler left - a pale green one - it's my favorite thing to drink out of.
Thought I was really cool when I got my own phone in my bedroom - a pink Princess one....
Oh, and Denise, no one in my family smoked, but, there was always an ash tray in the center of the coffee table in our home!
I love going down memory lane with all of you!
Hugs,
vicki -
Did you ever go to an older relatives house where they had a dish of hard candies and if you tried to pick one up the whole bunch would be stuck to it! And usually a little dusty!
The smell of sheets and towels on the clothes line, mmmm!
Denise -
I know just what you mean about
the candy...LOL! the hard candy and ribbon candy..
Remember whiffle ball
and dodge ball?
I remember my first
piggy bank(the old ones did not have
a cork or rubber stopper)
I was so upset
because I did not
want to break it open
..So I would cry to my dad
and he would give me an advance..LOL!! -
No one has mentioned these guys yet........

Hugs......
Candi -
Didn't everybody LOVE Davey?
-
I know I was in love with him........ I think he was my first 'crush'......lol......
Hugs......
Candi -
Alright I have to admit this My very first crush was Donny Osmond(oh yeah I was dweeb!). But he was quickly replaced by that stud in The computer wore tennis Shoes Kurt Russell. hmmm wonder how they look today?
-
Okay, I thought of a few more things.......

Jailhouse Rock.....
How many of us had one of these at one time or another.....
Or watched this.....

Hugs.....
Candi -
candi,
is that underdog?
i think i have watched him.
god bless -
Candi-I love your pictures so fun and many memories!
cowgirl -Okay I was a member of the dweeb club too first crush Donnie Osmond
Peg- I was getting my tonsils out the day of Kennedy's funneral
I can still remember the drums as they marched.
The orange fake tan and the orange on the palms of your hands!
Patti- I think my mom still has one of those pot holders LOL
Viki silly straws, silly putty, and that stuff you put on the end of a straw and you could blow into a balloon.
Does anyone remember the Sandy Duncan comercial skinny dip? -
Carrie...I remember Sandy Duncan but I can't place the commercial.
Peg.....was in the eighth grade when we heard the overhead announcement of Kennedy"s death. Everyone was shocked and in tears.
patti....I loved making those pot holders...wish I still had them...that's as close to the kitchen as I want to be however.
Chritine...Loves Baby Soft...I can smell it now...had forgotten all about it...they should bring it back or maybe they still do make it? I saw Jean Nate in the store the other day...so why not Love's Baby Soft!
Anyone remember Chantilly...not sure if I even liked it that much but my girlfriend & I took turns sharing and wearing the"Chantilly" dress while we handed out samples in the drug store. It was like a flapper style pink paper layered fringe dress with a matching hat...WOW what a sight but they paid us to do it.
Who was it that wondered about the "Nurses Caps"? Sierra? The last time I wore one was '81 or so and I'm reeeally glad for that!
Take care all....I think I'm getting addicted to all this nostalgia! Sharon F -
I recieved this e-mail from a friend this morning and I thought it would go perfect here......
My Mom used to cut chicken, chop eggs and spread mayo on the same cutting
board with the same knife and no bleach, but we didn't seem to get food
poisoning.
My Mom used to defrost hamburger on the counter AND I used to eat it raw
sometimes, too. Our school sandwiches were wrapped in wax paper in a
brown paper bag, not in ice pack coolers, but I can't remember getting
ecoli.
Almost all of us would have rather gone swimming in the lake instead of a
pristine pool (talk about boring), no beach closures then.
The term cell phone would have conjured up a phone in a jail cell, and a
pager was the school PA system.
We all took gym, not PE... and risked permanent injury with a pair of
high top Ked's (only worn in gym) instead of having cross-training
athletic shoes with air cushion soles and built in light reflectors. I
can't recall any injuries but they must have happened because they tell
us how much safer we are now..
Flunking gym was not an option...even for stupid kids! I guess PE must be
much harder than gym.
Speaking of school, we all said prayers and sang the national anthem, and
staying in detention after school caught all sorts of negative attention.
We must have had horribly damaged psyches.
What an archaic health system we had then. Remember school nurses? Ours
wore a hat and everything.
I thought that I was supposed to accomplish something before I was
allowed to be proud of myself.
I just can't recall how bored we were without computers, Play Station,
Nintendo, X-box or 270 digital TV cable stations.
Oh yeah... and where was the Benadryl and sterilization kit when I got
that bee sting? I could have been killed!
We played 'king of the hill' on piles of gravel left on vacant
construction sites, and when we got hurt, Mom pulled out the 48-cent
bottle of Mercurochrome (kids liked it better because it didn't sting
like iodine did) and then we got our butt spanked.
Now it's a trip to the emergency room, followed by a 10-day dose of a $49
bottle of antibiotics, and then Mom calls the attorney to sue the
contractor for leaving a horribly vicious pile of gravel where it was
such a threat.
We didn't act up at the neighbor's house either because if we did, we got
our butt spanked there and then we got our butt spanked again when we got
home.
I recall Donny Reynolds from next door coming over and doing his tricks
on the front stoop, just before he fell off. Little did his Mom know that
she could have owned our house. Instead, she picked him up and swatted
him for being such a goof. It was a neighborhood run amuck.
To top it off, not a single person I knew had ever been told that they
were from a dysfunctional family. How could we possibly have known that?
We needed to get into group therapy and anger management classes? We were
obviously so duped by so many societal ills, that we didn't even notice
that the entire country wasn't taking Prozac! How did we ever survive?
LOVE TO ALL OF US WHO SHARED THIS ERA, AND TO ALL WHO DIDN'T- SORRY FOR
WHAT YOU MISSED. I WOULDN'T TRADE IT FOR ANYTHING
Pass this to someone (over age 40, of course), and brighten their day by
helping them to remember that life's most simple pleasures are very often
the best!
Hugs......
Candi -

and sending hugs out to your MOM
))
ps Anyone
I recall a time when you went to
the bars and had lots of fun
in California.. and you never
paid for your drinks there
they just appeared.. LOL
hmmm..
Life was grand
free h'ors oeuvres as well
I ate up a storm -
Christine - I can't believe these tickets are darn near impossible. So much for a "fan friendly" stadium! At least for the average fan. I went thru a broker and paid thru the nose - but you only turn 50 once and he's worth it. They are in the upper section 437, but at least he'll be there. jt
-
Sierra, I remember never paying for a drink in the bars here in Ohio. You and I musta been the cutest girls in bar!!!
Denise -
Hi Denise:
never in San Francisco
but back here in Toronto
another story..
LOL
ahh well it was years ago
and fun.. I had a good pal
from OHIO.. people from that
state are special.. and Im not just saying it
they have such a nice way..
toodles..
Hugs.. -
If we are old enough to remember the things listed on this thread, we are probably not out trying to get drinks bought for us anyhow. I think the people sending those drinks may have had ulterior (sp?) motives. Me and my girlfriends (in our 20s) would sometimes go out w/out money and never bought a drink - The good ol'days.
-
Christine:
Hi there.. how ya be today?
no .. seriously, the bartenders
in San would send them
and .. wouldnt bother us at all
... LOL..
cheers to you -
For Patti:
My goodness.
there is no one like Aretha
or Gladys Knight and the Pips
the Supremes
)
hugs.. -
Hi Sierra- I am in the business and know that those bartenders were happy to have a bunch of girls sitting at their bar, made for a busy nite.
I LOVE San Francisco, but I was too young to visit in the 70's. Did enjoy it in the 80's right when Wine Country was getting so popular. What a great honeymoon it was for me in 1994. First the Ritz-Carlton in San Francisco then staying in Guests Houses at Wineries in wine country, Would LOVE to do it all again.(the honeymoon, not so much the marriage) -
1967 here...I remember much of you all remember. How cool to think back. Ok- to you Donny lovers...I loved Jay Osmand.(and Barry Manilow) haha. Scott Biao, Leif Garret, Parker Stevenson, David Cassidy...Fun Dips, bottle caps, candy cigarettes, strawberry crush (bottles). Went from Toni Tenille (sp?)to Dorothy Hamill to Farrah Fawcett hair. Used the baby oil and iodine, too. Walking to school from kindergarten thru Jr. High. Playing outside with the neighborhood kids til 10pm (in summer) without any worries. Favorite shows- three's company, Happy days, eight is enough, Brady Bunch,Little House on the Prarie, The Waltons, Sonny and Cher (even had the Cher head-like barbie's) Donny & Marie show, Charlies Angels, CHIPS, Hart to Hart, Love Boat, Fantasy Island(basically most of the shows now on TV Land.) Of course I Love Lucy. Movies: Saturday Night Fever, Grease, The Main Event, The Champ, Rocky, The Goodbye Girl, St Elmo's Fire, Footloose, Flashdance: Styles- remember wearing knee highs with everything and having a big/wide comb hanging out of your back pocket or in the side pocket of your "painter pants". Bell Bottoms, gauchos, hawaiian shirts, "DOVE SHORTS" hahaha. I loved roller skating...especially to Michael Jackson's "Off the Wall" album. Lots of disco. Remember Disco Duck? hahaha My first concert was Scorpions & Bon Jovi. (Did see the Osmonds) First date was chaparoned and we saw The Elephant Man. First kiss summer between 7th & 8th grade (yikes).
I've enjoyed reading your memories...Thanks for the smiles and letting me share some of mine. (I wore that Musk too!)
God Bless!
Nicki -
Hi Gals:
I loved Lucy.. and Jackie Gleason
Christine: I was there in the 60s..
a lot older than you.. LOL.. but Im a big kid
as you can see .. at times..
Yes, the bartenders were terrific
but also the men were very nice as well
I have been to Napa and Sonoma..
loved it.. Silverado.. a pal was the tennis pro there
...
you see when I lived there.. Hyatt
was the big thing.. and they had just opened
the Regency.. I believe once someone fell on those
elevators or something..they had an awful accident
hmmm
what else went on.. Im getting homesick now
you must have had fun there..
toodles for now.. -
Nicki, I love your avatar!
Candi, I often think about the saying 'it takes a village to raise a child'. Unfortunately that doesn't happen anymore. So so sad.
Tawyna, wow...that was some wicked candy!
Sierra, sounds to me like people from San Francisco/Toronto are pretty darn special too!
Denise -
I remember

Patti -
As my son travels through his HS years I often remember mine!
A nurse said today that he has it so much more pressure than I do, I disagreed. Please we lived by how we looked in gym shorts! I wore about 3 lbs of hot rollers every morning just to get some curl in my hair! I did walk home 1.9 miles from home till my senior year!
When I received the biggest OLDs 98 every made, that was worn out and took an hour for me to park! My dad gave me 5.00 a week in gas allowance, it barely made it home and school. He said that was fine with him!
Now kids have their own cell phone!
Anyway I do love the old days, but the gym shorts that looked like bloomers were part of those days I could be glad left! That and hot rollers that burned me daily, and if not those then I spent 1 hour with my curling iron! -
hi Gals..
heck, I recall wearing bloomers
Patti. Mitch yes..
2 for l .. HAPPY HOUR... WOW.. WHAT ABREAK
that was..
Cowgirl:
I thought of you and the goats
the other day saw that T. Lee Jones
film.. not nice.. though..
the subject matter
loved the scenery.. but a fox
was after the goats..
have a great weekend all
off to get some food
I recall eating Kraft dinner
living from pay ck to pay ck
had an apt.. at a young age
and fair rent to pay >>>LOL
also living in a rooming house
with students -
Sierra and cowgirl- oh yuck, the dreaded gym uniforms!!
When I first got mine it was too big and my crotch was hanging to my knees ! Okay who hated dodge ball and who was the mean person that invented it so all the mean kids could legally knock the socks off of you!!
okay Patti I was singing with you and doing the limbo
and I am stuck under my computer chair could someone call
the paramedics?? LOL I loved the music !
Nicki what is Dove shorts? I remember disco and yes I liked it!!
Candi your post reminded me of jarts we had hours of fun with them , how about back yard games of batmitten (how do you spell that?) and volley ball, tv tag , red rover, red rover. We use to get together with all the neighbor kids
and decorate our bikes with clothes pins and baseball cards
and colored paper and homemade signs and pretend we were a parade.
If you got in trouble at a neighbors house you were
in it for sure when you got home!!
Love this thread
